I just saw the first episode and I'm hooked. People are gushing over Flip Flappers when this show is just so meta. I can't stop laughing at all the tropes and archetypes being played up.

I learned of this show from a CR video.

I don't know why no one is talking about it. I mean we should have learned from Re:Zero not all LN adaptions stink.

For starters people just assume this is a madoka rip-off just because its a "dark mahou shojo". When apart from this, have almost nothing else in common.

Another thing is this series is dark, depressing and gruesome. Its not for the light-hearted and if you don't like seeing your favourite characters die then this show is not for you. Some people maybe put off by the "edginess" of it all as well.

There are plenty of people talking about it, but you have to find the right places. A lot of recent discussion is mainly about the light novels only however which are almost caught up to where the most recent novel that came out in Japan is! Honestly, this show tends to get more comments than most shows this season so I think it's at least buzzworthy. The initial Madoka-clone reaction though bugs the hell out of me though.

I think a large part of it is because of how long it takes to get going...I almost dropped it, but made it past episode 3 and felt the dramatic turn and stuck to it. I like the series, but I can see how it can come across as not worth watching based on the first few episodes.

Guessing I gotta go to reddit eh? Someone said there was a reddit for it so you can read the light novels. This is actually pretty good.

I think that is a fair thing to say but I was hooked with episode 1. This show is just so meta man. I fucking love it.

I have marathon 5 episodes already and it's finals week. What is wrong with me?

Dark magical girl is extremely niche (anime is already niche to begin with, and that type of anime is niche compared to it, so figure).

That's the real reason.

That's why NO ONE is trying to copy madoka's success because that was a once in a time success that used several things like Urobuchi's image to become successful.

And that's why anyone thinking that anime studios have been trying to copy madoka since then is just being plain stupid/ignorant on that. The studios are fully aware it's not going to work the same. Obnoxious madoka fanboy like the guy who created that "article" on MAL needs to understand that their favourite animu isn't creating anything new and didn't change a thing. Dark magical girl existed before, it's still existing after, the amount of them didn't especially change, the content isn't especially influenced either and still as creative, and peoples who write dark magical girls stories are NOT trying to emulate Madoka.

It's fairly obvious to anyone reading mahoiku's novels that the author doesn't give a f*** about Madoka. He's going in an almost 90° direction compared to it.

Several reasons.

For starters, the general "Madoka Clone!" stigma that Daybreak Illusion and Yuuki Yuuna is a Hero dealt with.

A lot of people don't care about Magical Girl shows to begin with. Other then Mecha and Idol anime, Magical Girl shows are probably the hardest shows to market to the western audiences.

And for fans of Magical Girl series, there is also Izetta the Last Witch and Flip Flappers, which are extremely strong competitors to this show this season. We typically don't get such a set up of strong Magical Girl shows in a season, this is a rarity.

That said, I've been mad hyped to start this show since I first heard about it. I do enjoy the Darker side of the Mahou Shoujo genre, and this looks to have some potential.

Gosh I wish I could comment on those featured artical things just because, yeah, the idea of even asking, "Is this show as good as Madoka?" Is already an utter trash and pathetic question to begin with.

I mean I can't speak for everybody obviously, but I'm not talking about it cause I simply don't like it that much. It's rather average to me. Also, I'm probably gonna get some hate, but it really does seem like a Madoka clone to me:
A dark magical girl anime where a cute, matter-of-fact mascot who doesn't really care about emotions makes girls into magical girls? A pink haired protagonist who doesn't like fighting and only wants to help people? Does that NOT sound familiar? I'm not saying that's a bad thing though. Just an observation.
This series also fails to make me feel for the characters. On a superficial level I do, I think some of them are cute, I think some of them are interesting, I have favorites, I get somewhat upset when my favorites die, but compared to how I really cared about the characters in, say, Fate/Zero, it just really falls short.

Finally, as I mentioned in the beginning, it's rather average in my opinion. To elaborate, I've watched around 100 er so airing series this year, and this just does not match up, for me anyways, with some of the better anime this year. Even if I limit it to this season, I find Izetta, Shakunetsu no Takkyuu Musume and www.Working (and even Keijo!!!!!!!) a lot more enjoyable than this one. That's just my opinion though, and I'm by no means saying that it's bad or that it's wrong to like it etc. It just doesn't appeal to my tastes as much as the others.
So hopefully I didn't get too off topic with this response/rant, I guess it was more about why I'm not talking about it rather than people in general, but yea. Thanks for reading if ya got this far.

pink haired protaganists who want to help others is the most unoriginal thing in anime ever but who cares its really not the selling point anyway
Fav does have emotions,he enjoys the suffering
It has dark tones but light/dark themes have existed since the start of time
Madoka is not even a magical grill show, its just disguised as one for the first 3 eps and the first half of the 3rd movie.Under its desquise its some s;g/evangelion shit dunno how to call it but its in a league of its owm.

Well... The show is no Flip Flappers. People gush over it because it's colorful and has great animation, which this show... Ehh... Doesn't really have. It's kind of a trainwreck of a show if you ask me, but it's entertaining nonetheless.

The funny thing is She doesn't even has the pink hair originally.

Snow White's hair in the first few novels was supposed to be Platinum Blond, the kind of blonde where it seemed light enough to be white. It was mostly because of the fans that she ended up with pink hair on the latter arcs, fanbooks and anime.

If only that make you think that it's a Madoka-clone, then you failed to understand what Madoka is about. :/
I guess it's the same comparison between Sword Art Online and Log Horizon.
Both present people trapped into a MMO setting, with a main character who is really strong and asocial. That made them the same serie? I don't think so. :/

"A dark magical girl anime where a cute, matter-of-fact mascot who doesn't really care about emotions makes girls into magical girls?"
Mascots are usualy cute, and Fav is more involved in what the Magical Girls do then QB.

"A pink haired protagonist who doesn't like fighting and only wants to help people?"
Like a lot of Magical Girl, particularly if the know they could die. ^^

Madoka is also more about a girl who hesitate being or not a Magical Girl.

Anyway, people who want to see a Madoka-like in MSIK will end up disappointed like:
If it's like Madoka, then it will a just be a bad rip off, so it's bad.
If it's not like Madoka, then it's bad cause it's not like Madoka. -.-

Well All Out is pretty bad. The animation and errors were piling. The shit was hard to watch. Also Flip Flappers is sci fi. That magical girl shit in episode 3 was an asspull.

1. Many sequel series drawing hype this season.
2. Many people who have actually watched it don't think for themselves and assume it is shit because people say it is a Madoka ripoff.

This series is one of the better series in a season filled with sequels, SoL and gutter trash.

Regarding the SAO/Log Horizon comparison though, I think Log Horizon's author is one of those that takes popular genres and tweaks them a bit. It's not to say that it's a copy or anything, but there was influence in its creation.

And this is very far from Madoka and closer to Danganronpa as far as what it's trying to achieve. Perhaps in the grand scheme more like JoJo too, just with magical girls.

Either because of the slow start, "ew, another Madoka clone" type of initial reaction or the mediocre score atm. There's a lot more interesting things this season anyway like 3-gatsu no Lion or Flip Flappers :)

Flip Flappers is literally doing worse than this within Japan. Kind of unsure why the West latched onto it.

And despite the initial set of Madoka clone criers, I think this is doing okay for itself.

I don't see how pretty colors would ever be a deterrent to the Japanese. I find my tastes to usually wind up quite in line with the Japanese tastes usually. I loved No Game, No life, and, while I didn't like FLCL at all, Symbolism doesn't seem to be a problem, considering the popularity of Evangelion and FLCL it self.

I think Flip Flappers probably isn't popular in Japan, because it's a bunch of incomprehensible, art deco, pretentious nonsense. :P.
