Okay so i just finished this show and i LOVED IT SO MUCH.... untill the last episode. I dont understand, they spent 11 beautiful episodes developing togame and shinchiki. You got to see how much they both grew, you got to see how togame went from a single minded but determined girl into one that can sympathize with others and came to accept her past. You saw Shinchiki go from a simple minded bumpkin that didnt really care into a person who valued life, someone who could understand people he couldn't even differentiate before! He found his purpose, and together you saw them slowly fall for each other. And then in episode 12 they took everything that was developed and threw it out the window!

How could togame possibly say everything up until now was just a tool to facilitate her revenge, the dying speech i felt was poorly written first of all and then she says the entire adventure and everything i had come to believe before hand was just a trick a scheme...... why.....

If this was really how she felt why wasnt this addressed by the holyman in episode 10, werent they seeing their inner selves and their convictions. Actually what was the purpose of episode 10 at all because all the development it brought was blatantly thrown out the window. Not only that but shinchiki's whole "badass unleashed" bit was so betraying as well. The arduous journey is completely ruined because if he just ignored togame's rules it would have been easy to begin with. Everything the show did, be it plot, or character development was just stepped on.

I also have some other problems with the show, the maniwani did nothing but die, Houou's interesting story wasnt explained, pengin just died in some anticlimactic deus ex machina way. Oh and Emoemzaemon was never properly explained even though he was the shadiest character ever. I also thought hietei was a boring character but whatever.

To conclude, I loved this show but WHY do people like this ending, i felt it went against everything the show did. I have some minor other problems but i could forgive all of that except for this damn ending. Was this all suppose to be some nihilism, the show had no indication of that beforehand. It literally said in the end everyone failed, but then what was the purpose of anything.

Weird...my memory is that the ending was exceptionally well done compared to the rest of the series. I guess I'd have to revisit that one, because from what I remember the most satisfying development came at the end. As I recall, togame received glimpses of character work midstream but nothing compared to the finale. I mostly have remnant images of her disparaging his 'unworthiness' until then. But I enjoyed it. Very Bakemonogatari(ish).

The things she said while dying were mostly not true. When her eye turned purple and she started saying all those mean things to Shichika, she was "scheming". Perhaps she was trying to make her imminent death less painful to Shichika, or perhaps she was manipulating his feelings to make him "finish the deed". Either way, the last things she said (while her eye was back to normal) were the things she really wanted to say.

I disagree.

I think Togame was most honest right before she dies. (Especially when her eye changed)

There's zero doubt in my mind that she'll kill Shichika if they're to succeed.

Hire a mercenary, plan to kill him after mission, got attached to mercenary, want to spare mercenary but she won't go against her early commitment. In fact she even used her bond with mercenary to gain further trust from said mercenary.

She simply cannot live a peaceful life no matter what. She would dream about it, she would desire one, but she'll never stop scheming and plan for the worst. She know her choice is against her desire, and she knows how stupid it is, but she can't stop.

"I would've kill you if we succeed, but because I fail, I don't have to, so that is a good thing too"

In other to achieve her ultimate goal, she deceive everyone, including her own feelings.

Togame is an amazing character.

No, they didn't take every development and throw it out the window, in fact, it developed as best it could.

The whole thing is a scheme.
The entire purpose is to help her rise to power and avenge her father.
And she won't let anything, even "love" and an undoubtedly "happier life", stands in her way.

Shichika ignore Togame's order is a show of his own character. That is the first order he disobeys, the first time he intentionally finding a loophole around Togame's order to do as he wish. He fell in love with a wicked woman, and he cant help it.

You can deduct that Shichika was a tool from the first episode. Did you honestly just take the "fall for me" moment at face value? Have you read Romeo and Juliet? What reason would he have to do that? Shichika was a tool who'd lived on a deserted island for 20 years and had no idea what love was at the time. I loved him and don't blame him for it, but he was. I mean for Christs sake, the guy refers to himself as a sword, as do Togame and his sister. Swords are tools.

Furthermore, Togame is obviously manipulative. Ninja openly state she's more crafty than they are, and she says most honorable men in the continent betray her, all in episode 1. I mean look at her clothing; she's completely "covered up" in heavy garb wheras Shichika is very open and plain.

However, I don't think the eye is simply her scheming, but rather her thinking of her father or acting in a way influenced by that event. 90% of the time that's scheming, but still, it's more than a lie detector.

Regardless, the ending didn't go against the series; the show set itself up for that from square one, while simultaneously being beautiful bait-and-switch for people looking for a typical adventure quest show where MC gets handed a girlfriend and a meaningless task.
Shit stinks.

"But that's just your opinion, Everett. I for one, LOVE eating shit!"

No, it's a fact that shit stinks; if you like eating shit, you just like things that stink.

I would have been fine with the ending as is (even though Togame dying made me sob and break to pieces).
However, that implied ending of Shichika and the Princess pissed me off. Like seriously.
After all of that, they got to run off into the sunset together? Now that...I cannot forgive.
Maybe someone can clear it up for me, because that's what is keeping me from giving this anime 10/10, placing Togame and Shichika in my top characters, and the anime into my top as well.
The anime was brilliant, but after witnessing the princess's guard and Togame die like that and then right after the credits having the princess and Shichika in a similar scenario as when he was with Togame. Honestly, it made me tear up again. It was infuriating.

It's him choosing to be happy instead of vengeful, learning via bad example from togame. The weird feeling that gave me was really the icing on the cake imo, but I understand what you're getting at. The whole point of that scene was to make you question why you'd rather go self-destructive-samurai style "I'll avenge my father" instead of just travel around with a good looking lady. It bothers me that he just went willy-nilly with the princess, but it bothers me that it bothers me. "Why are my priorities like this?" I thought that was what made it neat.

I think you've forgotten the most important thing. Although she was mean and said she wanted to kill him and dragged her death wish for so long. At the end she said, words lie but feelings don't which means anything she said could have been a lie but her feelings we all saw throughout the 12 episodes were true and she indeed fell in love with him. DAMN MY FEELS why did she have to die.

I'm just pissed at the fact the princess and him share the journey that was meant for togame T.T AND I DON'T GET WHAT THE WHOLE POINT OF COLLECTING SWORDS WERE WHEN IT WAS ALL JUST DESTROYED AT THE END?!!
