THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE. ---------------------------------------- I absolutely loved this anime. It had good character chemistry, plot, bouts and lite romance. I was into this title the whole way through. The only minor complaint I had, was with the way Kosaku won the fight--by his opponent slipping on his mouth piece?! Felt like a fluke victory. All in all though, very entertaining title! Wish it was more than just a 50 minutes. |

I'm a bit confused. I thought nuns were not allowed to get drunk. |
Don't talk to me about character development if Kaizuka Inaho or Slaine Troyard are in your favorites. |

I don't know if nuns are allowed to get drunk or not, but she never took her vows yet anyway. |

Nothing remarkable nor bad, except the strange way to end the fight who was supposed to be the final trial. A good way to go back to the 80s with Takahashi's style, good "old" seiyû and this period's anime music. Starting this Takahashi's adaptation, I thought there would be more comedy than there actually was. It's good that the anime manages to feel like a "one-shot" despite the fact the manga is 4 volumes long and there is some doubt about the hero's resolution (can't see him follow a permanent diet yet). Enjoyment: 4/5 Score: 5/10 |

If it wasn't for that lame last lucky punch would have gave it 7 but it was relatively enjoyable. |

Man, just taking out that last bit where he ate the burger would make it feel like he made actual progress, but in the end it just seems like Kosaku is in the same position he was at the beginning only this time he got lucky. |

I never knew there was a limit of weight in boxing. That is interesting. |

Kosaku was voiced by Toru Furuya and Sister Angela by the late Hiromi Tsuru. It was very exciting hearing the Kimagure Orange Road cast in a Rumiko Takahashi story. Out of all the 80's Rumic World OVAs, this one might be the best one. Though I'm not sure if it's part of the line of the last 3 OVAs. The story is relatively self-contained for an OVA adaptation of a manga with 4 volumes. I think this is a story that Takahashi-sensei released sporadically from 1987 to 2006... I'd like to read the manga, just to see the evolution of her art. But there's also a 9 episode of live-action series made in 2008 which I assume covered the entire manga. And it's English subbed so no excuse not to watch it like H2. |

He won because his opponent slipped on his fucking mouthguard, making his victory 100% luck-based? He won not because of skill or hard work, but because of luck? Are you fucking kidding me?!!! And is headbutting your opponent in the gut even allowed in boxing? I just googled it and it says: "An intentional headbutt is considered a flagrant foul that can result in disqualification of the offender." Meaning he should've been disqualified and lost the match! The show was building up to this fight, and it ends up being one of the most unsatisfying and dumbest victories I've ever seen. Hatanaka cheated, plain and simple. Rumiko Takahashi didn't know the rules of boxing when she wrote the manga, and should've done research on the sport. Just an OVA about a boxer who struggles to control his weight, really. Oh, and they just had to ruin his diet right before the match by giving him a fucking burger. After all that! That coach is an idiot. And of course he vomits it out during the fight. |

I'm not really into sports animes but this was pretty nice. Good artwork and Sister-chan was super cute. I agree the ending was weak and furthermore, if they are charting this guy's weight daily(?) how did they not notice he was getting fatter before the point the assistant reported it to the coach, where the line on the graph was through the roof? Seems like they would've caught it way earlier before he spiraled so far out of control. Could've done without so much focus on him vomiting too, but whatever. I guess it was pretty alright overall. |

Wow, I was thinking some of the scenes seemed like something that I imagine a woman would write during this time period. The slap after the unsolicited kiss, the focus on a more personal weight problem in the first place, everyone honestly having faith in him as opposed to a select few, and even the way the drunk nun was done respectfully enough. On their own, they don't scream "a woman wrote this", but together I was thinking, "Huh. There's a more empathetic approach to this. I wonder if a woman wrote this." I had no idea this was a Rumiko Takahashi work until I scrolled down to write this comment, and now it all makes sense. It was kinda really sad to see someone struggling with poor impulse control so much. Like his actual dream was on the line and even in the end, he only just barely made it through. And so many people had hope in him and believed he could turn himself around. I understand it's hard, and I saw at the last week that he was trying, but dang when you've got it that bad it looks like it's rough. You see how it take its toll on everyone else too. It was hard to watch. Yet somehow they just kinda ended it with that silly win. Okay. I can only hope he shapes up from there, but gee I just don't know because that final burger kinda leaves me with doubts. |

This was a great adaptation of the first few chapters of the manga, and it even added a few nice tidbits, such as the church ladies teasing Sister Angela about Kosaku being her boyfriend. I thought that was cute. I also appreciate how Sister Angela has a moped instead of a normal bicycle; with her long dress, it'd be hard to pedal a bike, so they took that into consideration. The way they animated her trotting over to her moped and she would ride quickly away after shouting "Fight!" was very cute. The animation of this OVA was solid! Also, Kosaku looked more muscular here than in the manga which I think is a nice touch. This definitely deserves more than a 6/10, but MAL is really harsh on old OVAs for some reason. 8/10 from me. Also, apparently Kyousuke's voice actor and Madoka's voice actress from Kimagure Orange Road voiced Kosaku and Sister Angela respectively! They did a great job. RIP Hiromi Tsuru, voice of Sister Angela and Madoka. Her voice was so pretty. On another note, one of the top reviews on MAL laments over Sister Angela feeling like more of a "supporting character" than a main character, and I totally disagree. She had much screen time here and, without her presence, Kosaku wouldn't have stayed strong in his weight training and never would have made it. Even during the match, at his lowest moment, Kosaku having Angela there and swearing on her Bible helped motivate him to win. I don't see her as an unimportant side character whatsoever; if she were omitted from this OVA, the entire thing would have to be rewritten and would be totally worthless. Sister Angela makes One Pound Gospel such a treat. She is the love interest and the most important character of the story along with Kosaku, and this OVA was no different in that regard. IIxAnxietyxII said: Did this ova cover the whole manga? I'm super late in replying (13 years!), but just for anyone else who's curious: no, this OVA does not cover the entire manga. It only covered around half of volume 1. I definitely recommend the manga as it has 3.5 more volumes and I think the ending of the manga is really good. It's satisfying all around. If you enjoyed this OVA's lighthearted comedy, romance, and boxing, you'll appreciate the manga, too. |

This was fucking trash... Made it seem like the MC was under foul play. MC weak willed as fuck, caves in as soon as he gets a whiff of any food, bullies and misuses his kohai. MC proceeds to foul play himself for the win, praises god for the win. Room temperature IQ MC. |
