I enjoyed this movie, and agree with someone that pointed out watching this from the perspective of Arrietty really gave a normal environment for us humans a fresh and exciting world. Overall, just a nice and relaxing movie which is good pace of change from everything that is usually out today.

Also I find it hard to see how them moving into the Doll House would create a happier ending.
I mean if they did, it would be the same as putting them into captivity wouldn't it?

Even though Spiller doesn't have much lines, he has a nice voice (by Fujiwara-san, who I think he expressed the character well with only voice). He gives them hope about there are more of their kind.
Yeah I really liked this character. It was very cute at the end when he gave Arrietty a berry. Definitely gives you hope that their kind will keep living ;)

It was a beautifully artistic movie which overall I loved but I have to admit that the ending was a bit disappointing.
Apart from Arrietty, the borrowers still see humans as a threat, Arrietty's family was still forced to move out of their home which they loved and didn't want to leave, the dollhouse which was built specifically for the borrowers still remains untouched (apart from the kitchen I guess)
Yeah these things were definitely disappointing, but I knew not expect a happy-go-lucky ending when I started watching.

and the audience never knows the fate of Sho after his heart operation.
I think its safe to say that the operation was a success. The very first part of the narrative says that he remembers the week he spent in the house his mother grew up in (or something along those lines) so I figure he lived a while if he says he remembers it as if it happened a long time ago.
Oh thanks for pointing this out! That makes sense and is reassuring.

I thought Sho telling her she was part of a dying species was kind of unnecessary though.
That's Ghibli for you though. They are quite known to be very pro environmental and the movie was just a way to send out a message that they care very much about.

8/10. I did enjoy this movie and look forward to more Ghibli films in the future.

Oh my goodness, I absolutely loved this movie. <3 The art was so beautiful, the lively nature and all those little insects crawling around. One of those movies that makes you feel a little warm inside. Definitely made me happy.

I saw this as soon as it became available (a while ago) but from what I remember, I liked it. I sat for a while after watching it, milling over it, and decided I REALLY enjoyed this movie.

- Spiller is SUCH a throwback to Jimsy from Future Boy Conan. (Anyone else notice?) Also, I found this that I feel like sharing for some reason..

- The soundtrack is absolutely GORGEOUS. I literally love almost every song in the OST The art was crazy too (but thats normal for a Ghibli film isn't it.)

- Miyazaki wrote the script for this film, so its still pretty difficult to separate his influence from the rest of the studio, but I am still looking forward to Yonebayashi's next film

i agree with most of you
i loved the attention to detail and how vast the world seemed to arrietta and the rest of the borrowers
i felt sympathetic towards sho though
i hope he starts living life optimistically once his operation becomes a success :)

The only crappy Ghibli movie I've seen. Maybe if it was about 20minutes longer to give more closure, (or a sequel was out there), it'd be better imho. I kept wondering "what about the freaking dollhouse that was made -for- them ages ago?" Honestly its like..nothing happened, and its a sad ending for the little ones if you ask me. House destroyed 'n all

While the story was maybe a little too subdued and short, the ending of this movie was phenomenal. Perfect resolution, perfect amount of tension, perfect pacing, perfect lessons...I've never seen a movie ending this good.

This. The ending also left me wanting more. I want to know what happens next. Good thing I have the original books somewhere....

Anyways, it's a ghibli movie, and I haven't seen one that I haven't liked yet. Can't wait for the next one.
I really couldn't be bothered to come up with a clever signature at this time. So right now I will go ahead and say nay and move on with my business

This movie was amazing. Beautiful art and music. It was a Ghibli movie though, and they're usually good. But I feel like it ended so abruptly... That and I cried a bucket of tears... But maybe I'm too emotional.

I really liked it. I was sad at the ending though; when Niya went to fetch Sho to meet up with them, I was hoping for a happy ending like him talking to the parents and convincing them to move back and he'd protect them from Haru (or have the obviously sympathetic aunt fire her). Yea, everything can't have a "happy ending", but I still can wish hehe.

Beautiful artwork and music. The film was about understanding and the development of trust and friendship. Truly a wonderful film. I really liked the ending where Sho followed the cat to Arrietty and also where she blushes - that was so cutee.

i give it a 9/10.

Very conflicted.

The world building was amazing.
The music was grand.
The voice acting was wonderfully well done. I watched both the Japanese and the UK dub.

However...it felt like it was missing a plot.
The ending was all kinds of bollocks.
It felt to me like it was missing a lot of chapters or something.

I watched this in the movie theaters(in english D:) back in february. Forgot to add it. The music and animation were spectacular. I almost could't stand the english voice overs though. I plan to watch this again (in japanese) sometime in the future. I mainly decided to watch this cause I was a big fan of the borrowers when I was younger.

Overall, I gave this series a 7/10.

Felt way too short... we never found out if Shou survived the operation. Then again, any longer might have ruined the pacing.

Well I liked it up until they left. Y u no stay together?! I woulda been ecstatic if the family ended up moving into Shou's house without knowing it lol but that woulda been too normal and predictable huh? Bahhhhh, I'm saaaaad... plus the fact that she was kinda mean to him throughout the movie, until towards the end when they finally became friends. Eh, I did enjoy the movie though, and it was beautifully done.

Ahh, but in the beginning of the movie, Shou states saying, "I'll never forget that summer. I spent a week in the old house where my mother grew up."

If you kind of read between the lines, you can assume he did survive his operation since he's talking about his stay there like he's already past that and moved on with his life. But it's just an assumption.

I really enjoyed this movie a lot more then I thought I would. 7/10 (which is high on my scale. Basically means I like it enough that I would buy it but not so much that I'm going to run out and get it anytime soon).

Differing from some others I felt Ponyo was a one time watch and aimed at a younger audience and I don't feel it's necessary to watch it again. While this movie like many other favorite Studio Ghibli movies of mine left me wanting more as soon as it was over!

Though, I do agree that the ending just didn't feel like good closure (if it had maybe it would have been 8/10) and I agree I would have liked to have seen more of Spiller, possibly seen Haru punished, and seen Arrietty family move into the doll house and stay with the young boy after he survives his surgery which is partially how I was hoping to see the ending. I can't help but wonder if the boy did survive his surgery and if so did Arrietty come visit him later???
Such junk...

As expected of Studii Ghibli, another fantastic film! I love how Arrietty jump back and forth with that small body of hers. I wish I could befriend some "little
people" though, not those bad ones. I want Arrietty and her family. The cat is so fat and cuuuute. <3 I want to have that kind of cat. XDD Sho is so nice and
friendly~ wish him and Arrietty bonded more throughout the film. I hate their goodbye scene. >.< So saaaaaaaaaaad. I hope Arrietty's family did stay on the dollhouse. That maid looking guy is so annoying. I can't help to hate her. But I think overall, it is a heartwarming movie. Hope to see more movies from Ghibli films in the future. They are my favorites.

I'm not a huge fan of Ghibli movies... I mean, all of them I've watched so far were stunning, but something was missing for me so that I could put a 10. Perhaps, they were a bit naive for my age or I just didn't have a proper mood for them. But this is the highest score, really. I loved it.

GarLogan78 said:
I expected it to end differently. I thought that Haru would get fired or something and the Borrowers would be able to live a peaceful life in the dollhouse

Yep, the same.
But later I got that the dollhouse is like a golden cage... the borrowers would have become unfree even if they still could do what they wished to. It would have been physical freedom but moral captivity.

I also agree that Spiller and Arrietty could become a couple, however, Spiller is a bit barbaric for her...

I'm sure Shou survived 'cause when he was seeing the borrowers off, the sun rose up - like a symbol of life and well-being...

I think only good-hearted people can notice the borrowers or maybe it is certain families who have this possibility (for some reason). Haru didn't belong to that kind and wanted to harm just because she lacked such gift (=seeing borrowers). That's what I thought... maybe, I'm wrong.

As expected with Ghibli, this movie was just beautiful. The artwork alone makes the film glow. The sentiment behind this movie was captivating. I wanted to cry when Shou discussed life and death with Arrietty. The gentle pacing was perfect.

It didn't bother me that Shou and Arrietty had to separate at the end (although it was sad), but I was still left feeling unfulfilled. I think I was expecting a slightly more climatic climax. Something a tad more intense than the crow scene, instead of just sneaking around to outsmart the crazy lady.

Overall, really nice.

I think this is the first time I've ever craved a sequel coming out of a Ghibli movie. =/ It just wasn't all that satisfying, you know?

My first time would be Spirited Away with if Haku would meet Chihiro or not. But yeah, I want to watch more of Karigurashi, too.

I think because Spirited Away is just so full of awesome and moments that make me teary-eyed, that by the time it's over I'm just sick of it. XD I love it so much, but I think a sequel would cheapen it.

On the other hand, Arietty feels ripe for sequels! But Arietty was more slice-of-life than Miyazaki's flicks.
I would love to see a sequel only to see no-face again. how about a new movie about him?
