Love that they're essentially condensing two episodes of plot from the original series to one episode of the new series. It doesn't feel rushed at all and flows well!

That retro game style intro is neat way to start the episode. Ryoga is always one of my fav character in the series eventhough the having no direction gag can be tiring later on. He's pretty much the opposite of Ranma's character so he's really fitting as his rival. The stylistic approach on their fighting bits do looks cool but I actually prefer if there's none of it. I do wish a certain remake would get this level of treatment for adaptation lol. How I wish they keep the sweet moments throughout in that remake like this episode did. Short hair Akane is here to stay signifying a huge shift in her life. Interested to see how will they adapt Ryoga's character until when he get a new love interest.

@DesuKouichi27 It's by the same composer from Inuyasha, Kaoru Wada.
@VivaceRex that explains why xD

I love her Inuyasha osts and I often play it in loop, but just for me I hope the fight scene bgms could have been maybe some kind of upbeat xD but still 👌👌👌👌👌👌👌

For thoses who have read the manga or watched the og, nothing is being left out ? I know the pacing of this is faster and wanted to make sure nothing was missed. Also, which do u like more ?
@zanoodle I read the manga and watched the OG anime and enjoyed both a lot! Even some of the filler episodes were great imo. (With the exception of the episodes that featured a certain character who has yet to make his appearance...)

The remake is much closer to the manga and I have a lot of fun watching it, but I think I still prefer reading the manga probably? The pacing of the remake is a little too fast for me personally, even though it is super close to the manga, but I prefer some of the quieter moments in the OG. I always say to experience both the OG and the remake (or even the manga) to get the best of both worlds. I will die on this hill saying that FMA 03 and HxH 99 still deserve to be watched!

Yay! Ryoga, one of my favorite anime characters ever, is here! Love that he is introduced fighting a boar. x)

This episode was really fun and funny, had some great action, and some beautiful art direction. Also, you could feel the emotional weight toward the end; the way Akane's hair getting cut was animated was very effective.

Oh, and the intro scene was cute! It reminded me of the Ranma fighting game I once played on an emulator.

Ryoga enters the stage and he has quite the grudge agaisnt Ranma for some reason. It seems that it isn't about just the food but something else that has been bothering him and hasn't explained. Ranma in his fight didn't want to get Akane involved though she insisted on taking a part. Her desolation after being rejected was such that in the recoil her ponytail was cut off. Quite the cliffhanger for next episode.

as much as i never actually forgave him for being the one that cut Akane's beautiful long hair... welcome Ryoga, still one of the best characters of the series and the one i've actually already cosplayed, to the point of "inheriting" his perfect sense of direction and getting lost at a 2023 anime convention, becoming unable to find a Point Blank arcade cabinet until it was almost closing time. And... yeah, i stay in character, use upside down maps from different events, and go in different directions after asking people for panels or something. No, really, i also wore my handmade black-and-yellow headband while watching this episode. Fun fact for italian dub watchers like me, Ryoga is voiced by one of the sons of the original voice actress of girl Ranma. Sweet.

About the rest... for a change, i didn't think about Street Fighter II with the opening scene, i thought about the real series beat-em-up released in 1993 for SNES, also known as Ranma 1/2 Hard Battle. It was a good game, including some funny characters yet to be introduced in this remake (at least, i wish they will). And it's amusing how the "too tight on the breast, too baggy on the waist" scene stayed.

@vivi291 I'm another newcomer, appreciate the affirmation that this seems to be a good place to hop in at least!

My old roommate, who was slightly younger than my father, recommended this show to me a while ago, but I never got around to it until now. Looking back, I'm almost 30 and the OG anime is still older than me. After my experiences trying to get through the older HxH and Jojo anime (because I did, for the sake of completion and comparison), I must say that, some things like genre depending, diving into older anime can feel like something of a drag... but I will stand by some parts of OG FMA and Fruits Basket too, but also those are comparatively more modern. I'm not sure what the deal is with me, really.

But yeah, that all aside, I can't say for sure how into this I'll get because I've literally only seen 4 episodes, but the last thing I or any other newcomer wanted to hear is, "ew, this new anime got so much wrong, go read instead or watch the old one". I mean, as an audience wewere already disappointed with Uzumaki this season. Like, the worst I've heard so far about Ranma is about a lack of nipples and, while I don't condone censorship, also isn't the biggest issue in the world.

What a fun episode! It's been a while since I've felt this way, but I was in disbelief when I realized the episode had already ended. Ryouga is here! My second favorite character in the series. The way he lifted up Ranma's body and jumped with one hand was really cool. And his endless string of bandanna attacks was absolutely hilarious. But even if it was on accident, I will never be able to forgive him for cutting Akane's hair...RIP to her beautiful, long hair T-T

hehe the video game ranma intro lol and nooo r.i.p to akane's long hair, hard to see that again, always liked her better with the long hair and whoa to instrumental version of ending song, i think that went great with the shock ending moment there. anyway i am really liking this return, not bad. I'm liking the manga style animation they added to it on some scenes, very cool.

@MoonSpider Always nice to see new people getting into Ranma 1/2!

You can definitely try to check out the OG anime, I think even personal bias aside, it still has some great moments imo. Sure, not everything has aged perfectly and it can be a drag here and there, but overall it's a great comfort anime if you know what to expect. It's an older series, not exactly fast paced, and if you don't mind that, you can see if it's for you. But in the end, it all comes down to personal preference! I like having a lot of episodes, I was practically raised on long anime. I saw FMA03 and HxH 99 first and they had such a huge impact on me when I was a teenager, I remember when Brotherhood was announced and it completely blew my mind that FMA 03 took so many creative liberties. One of my biggest gripes with Brotherhood was the comedy, I didn't mind it too much in the manga, but it irritated me a few times in the anime.

It's always fun to see the differences between adaptations, and if the remake of Ranma is fun enough for you to want to check out the other versions, then do so! The remake is good, visually very impressive (I had to warm up to the character designs though) and it's great for anyone who prefers a faster pace and more visualized comedy. The censorship isn't that bad, people are crazy for actually saying that Ranma is ruined because of the lack of nipples xD I'm just happy that people are (re)discovering Ranma and Rumiko Takahashi's works that aren't Inuyasha.

I used to watch anime growing up and then got back into it in my earlier years of college. I mainly stuck to what was recommend to me by friends or what seasonal anime seemed Interesting. So I am really happy Ranma got revamped cause I have been really enjoying it so far and probably wouldn’t have found it otherwise. At this rate I probably will end up watching the og ( when the new season ends). Makes me realize there are so many old school anime I neglected to check out. Honestly, if either of you got any “old school” recommendations feel free to shoot them my way.

@zanoodle That's why I appreciate remakes a lot, because it brings more people into these great series that are beloved for a reason. Like I said, the OG is awesome, even if it is dated in some places and sometimes doesn't follow the manga chronologically, which the remake will 100% do. It also adds but unfortunately also leaves out parts that were or were not in the manga.
As for recommendations, if you like Rumiko Takahashi's style so far, you can also try her other series like Urusei Yatsura, which is also a remake, but it is an adaptation of the "best" chapters of the manga. Also, Urusei Yatsura is much weirder than Ranma, lol. My personal favorite is Maison Ikkoku, a beautiful slice-of-life romance that's much more grounded and realistic in tone. Also a big plus since the characters are young adults. Another old school anime I can recommend is Yu Yu Hakusho, OG Trigun, Great Teacher Onizuka, Slayers, Serial Experiments Lain, Now and Then, Here and There, or Revolutionary Girl Utena.

Nooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!! There it is, the moment I was not looking forward to, Akane's forced haircut. Man, I remember how much I liked Akane with long hair and how devastating this moment was... and this is not even her final form! Well, at least it was great to enjoy a second time of long-haired Akane.

Oh and Ryoga is here. His complete lack of sense of direction is hilarious, but there are so many positive comments about him while I remember disliking him in the OG series xD. Let's see if this remake changes my opinion of him.

@zanoodle You can check the manga out for yourself but it goes without saying and is a well known fact that modern anime tend to follow the manga 1:1. That's why even the older fans may like this remake more minus the censorship which is the only downside to it.

so not really fully relevant to the entire episode but, after watching these first four episodes, this suddenly came up to my mind but I think the bgm is giving me more Inuyasha vibe than Ranma 1/2 xD it's just the music is in serious tone and not something like hmmmm cant describe it well but maybe something energetic?

But great work overall. so creative with the choreography and color palette

100% agree. I liked the kooky bgm in the old one, because this bgm feels a bit too serious. I hadn't thought of the InuYasha comparison but that's a fitting way to describe it

Man missed Tokyo and ended up in Hokkaido.
Before Zoro, before Sanosuke, there was Ryoga Hibiki.
Love that Ranma just 100% oblivious to why he's so mad, trying to make it up with the different school lunch breads.

For the folks wondering why Akane has long hair in the remake; it was always like that in the beginning; Ryoga's stray bandana cut it. I wonder if the OP will be updated, though.
