For a series to be enjoyable you need at least one of two things: good story or good characters. Enticing characters can make a bland story worth following or immersive story can be interesting enough alone for bland characters to not matter. Of course it's best to have both and sprinkle it with good production values like animation or music but visuals and music won't make up for missing both. And this series has nothing aside from above average production values. Characters are obnoxious and story is shallow to the point of not existing.

As for Hyouka, I'm not to gush over KyoAni animation. They settled for the awful K-ON character design in all of their series the same way A-1 started making the exact same protagonist with different hair colour (which actually resembles KyoAni carbon copy at that). But Hyouka had endearing characters that made me want to follow their story even if, for the most part, it was about some meaningless highschool nothings. I can imagine watching a whole episode of Oreki making something up to make Chitanda stop asking about the damn coco. In this series I fast forwarded the whole episode because I'd rather slap myself in the face for 20 minutes instead of watching these off-putting characters discuss something completely meaningless.

Lmao at making an essay talking about "great visuals can't make for a empty story and characters" and then having one of Shinkai's movies as one of your favorites.

@Antanaru I agree that this series so far doesn't have as good character writing compared to Hyouka.
- Kobato is barely interesting, he's like Oreki and Satoshi smashed together with neither said characters' charm.
- Kengo is boring and barely does anything, he's even annoying at time.
- Osanai is extremely cute and is the best out of the trio but I'm probably biased since she's cute. Character-wise, she's practically Ibara with extra steps.
- And you don't have a 4th female character to round them out like Hyouka so this trio misses more than hits.

Plus, Hyouka established a big character-driven mystery by episode 2. Meanwhile, so far we've only got a bike thievery as a mistery, Osanai's true personality reveal feels like a shoed-in instead of being a core part of the mystery.

The production is good but it definitely shows signs of slowing down by ep 4 already, no way this can match Kyo-ani's level by the end of ep 10.

So this show from the same author of hyouka. If I am not mistaken, I was fall asleep when watching hyouka eps 4 or 5 because I feel so bored. So Will I fall asleep as well if I am watching this one?
@Hizuki_Kei If you fall asleep watching Hyouka, I recommend you avoid this series because we can't be responsible for you going into a coma.

Anime watchers these days have the attention span of a toddler. No wonder this series doesn't get the love it deserves. I blame tiktok for this.

Also for the people comparing this to Hyouka, this show is more seinen. You don't have the cute moe Kyoto Animation characters here. The tone is different.

@anikevin You hit the nail right on the head: the attention span of toddlers. Maybe because they are toddlers and lack taste.

This is also seen in discussions in my other favourite Gimai Seikatsu. There are lingering moments that's too long for anime standards but not quite the long takes that some art films are striving for. Again, their taste befit toddlers. (eta: on a rewatch, there's a long take)

Going back to topic, this anime is too subtle for its own good. You have to engage with the visuals and think about what they are trying to convey. This is not for casual viewing that 'toddlers' often do.

All the haters in this thread are slapped by the latest episode. What dull characters are you talking about?

Time for all of you to take your WALK OF SHAME.

While watching the last two episodes I thought "maybe, all the previous episodes were meant to get to this moment". But my opinion doesn't change that much. I was somehow deceived by the presentation of the series and I realized after the first two that I regretted having seen them.

An episode on the beach, shots of lingerie.. would they have made any difference? Absolutely not and it's a shame that these can really be taken as an excuse for a lack of interest.

Probably for many like me there is a lack of context and I think it is quite obvious that some episodes were really "heavy" like the one with the chocolate. Maybe not everyone, but those who already had some information are likely to be able to enjoy the show more precisely because they already have answers or in any case knew what to expect from this anime.

They didn't tell us anything about how certain relationships were built (or how they work) and we had very little information about how they came to make certain life choices.

The presence of beautiful shots is not enough for me :(

What about this show makes you surprised that more people aren't into it? There really isn't anything for the average person to grab on to. There's no big plot, no fanservice, nothing to grab the average casual viewer. It makes perfect sense for this to be an underappreciated gem.

For me it's overrated, boring AF. One of those shows that are too serious considering how dumb the themes in the show are.

I was disappointed, I had hopes for this one.

One episode doesn't make up for the previous boring 8!

For starter people already could not really enjoy Hyouka and this series is pretty much slower than Hyouka. While Hyouka has Eru that constantly makes everything move while Shoshimin doesn't have that. Also I fell like in Shosimin you can't really feel like you are solving the "mysteries" together with Kobato and Yuki because Yuki is just to 5head for me, while in Hyouka I feel like I can follow what Oreki is thinking and solve it together.

So there's not a huge hook for the show, super slow, and audience's involvement is pretty hard.

This show's big problem from day 1 has been that neither of the main leads have all that much personality to latch onto. They're both very similarly under-exaggerated by anime character standards and they just aren't engaging to watch. And that's at least partly by design because they're trying to be "normal" (read: boring) people.

In Hyouka, by contrast, both Oreki and Chitanda have strong and distinct personalities that make them stand out and make them engaging to watch from episode 1, and that's despite Oreki also not wanting to really do anything like is the case with Kobato and Yuki in this show.

Mundane mysteries can be made interesting if the characters solving them have fun, strong personalities to contrast them against, but when the characters are as mundane as their mysteries the whole show becomes boring, and that's the ultimate problem Shoushimin has in terms of being able to have any form of broad appeal.

And no, the Osanai reveal in this week's episode changes nothing because we have still never actually seen Osanai acting like the nutcase she is: we've just been told via exposition that that's what she is, with the show deliberately avoiding actually showing her acting like that (e.g. not showing her attacking the kidnappers alongside Kengo and Kobato before the police showed up) because that would obviously be too interesting. All we've ever seen of Osanai is her innocent act, never the true personality laying beneath it. At least we saw the cracks in Kobato's facade a couple of times, but never has that happened for Osanai.

Come on, is it actually hard to understand the lukewarm reception? It's a very slow-paced anime with characters that spend most of their time talking in a monotonous tone and overanalyzing mundane situations. There are basically no real stakes in half of the episodes and while the show looks good, the whole vibe is pretty cold. None of this is inherently bad but it easily explains why this anime isn't popular. And as someone who likes this kind of show, I find this one pretty disappointing. To me it's all style and no substance.
