The responsability of guiding the group towards the First Place. Schwerzando and Hitotose no Uta are the chosen songs, the second by the trio Kousaka, Tsukamoto and Oumae.

I feel like there will be a slight clash between the New President and Kuroe... Kitauji might be a very small place for two Euphoniums.

Amazing Opening and Ending Themes. Colorful and vivid, with that special touch the series has.

We start out the episode with the gorgeous opening theme, ReCoda by TRUE, which Kyoto Animation does a brilliant job of animating the visuals. Again, the beauty of Uji's scenery is depicted, while we see throwbacks to the former upperclassmen, including my favorite, Asuka senpai. Not to mention we get another Kanade punch visual from the opening.

Going into the contents of the episode, we learn that Mayu is a transfer from Seira Joshi, a school with a strong wind ensemble that are regulars at nationals. Mayu seems like a more reserved character who I can't really get a handle on her motivations in joining the club yet. On one hand she states that she does not want to be a bother to the club and upset the band's balance. On the other hand, Mayu intentionally chose to transfer to Kitauji for the wind ensemble and seems very intent on being a part of it. I wonder if Mayu's backstory would stem around her desire to prove herself to her old classmates at Seira Joshi.

Watching Hazuki train the newbie first years is a nod to her growth and understanding of beginners as she was in the same exact spot 2 years ago. Suzume and Tsubame's close sibling relationship is also a treat to see, as we see Suzume, with good intentions, misunderstand Tsubame being in the color guard for SunFes. It's clear how much Suzume loves her sister as she states that she is always on her sister's side.

Finally, we have the decision of the free piece that the ensemble would play at competitions. This choice is left to the executives, Kumiko, Reina, and Shuuichi, by Taki sensei, with 3 pieces being on the table, Amayo no Tsuki, Hitotose no Uta, and Kagerou Kitan. As soon as we hear Reina describe Hitotose no Uta as being the piece that required both strong expression for the story (Amayo no Tsuki), and strong technical skill (Kagerou Kitan), we know that it was going to be their selected piece, as the club is aiming to be the best and going for gold at nationals.

A Kitauji Quartet ending theme, Neiro no Kanata, written and composed by ZAQ, is once again on the table for this third and final season of Euphonium. It's only fitting to hear Kumiko, Hazuki, Midori, and Reina end each episode in their final year at Kitauji. The song is slower paced and relaxing to listen to, while the complementing visuals bring a sense of nostalgia watching the growth of each girl over the years.

Absolutely gorgeous episode, everything came together so nicely this week. Said this last week and I'm saying it again, I'm so happy to have this show back.

The piano backtrack that hit right at the end of the episode before the ED was flawless, actually gave me goosebumps. The ED this week was adorable, I loved it.

Seeing Kumiko dealing with president issues is always funny and entertaining. On top of that the execs for the band being her, Reina, and Tsukamoto is just such good vibes. Really excited for next week and to get to know Kuroe a little better. Her nickname being Mama was... Different lol. Seems like an interesting character, and she is always dripped out to the max with her old school's dress code.

It's tricky to judge Mayu at the moment, but either way, having her join the music club is a good thing, especially considering that she does have experience at playing in the nationals with her previous school. For me, I do sense a calm and gentle vibe with her during her conversations with Kumiko and Kanade, but I can't help but think that there's something off about her. I do look forward to seeing more of her as the series goes on and see how she progresses.

The pressure of being the club president was starting to effect Kumiko slightly, not only dealing with Suzume's vocal concerns, but also thinking about what song to choose for the competition piece. The moment that Kumiko and Reina shared at the familiar bench was really nice, where the visuals got prettier as the sun broke through the clouds at the same time the chosen song itself played. That was a really nice touch. =)

The OP and ED was great. TRUE's vocals always hit well with the powerful OP sequence, while the ED song was more on the emotional side compared to the upbeat ED song back in season 2. Either way, it fits really well with the pretty visuals.

@Meta_Yoshi What do you mean when you say that there is something off about Mayu? I also got the feeling that she is likely hiding something related to her past and the reason why she wants to continue playing in a good band. Mayu's way of talking reminds me of how her VA, Haruka Tomatsu voiced Asuna's softer lines in SAO which I am currently binging.

I got goosebumps. The concert band music swells, cut to city skylines in golden glow. I actually feel grateful for this show.

I also feel like there's this sense of foreboding with her. The way they showed Kumiko and Mayu's first meeting at the end of Episode 1 felt especially weird to me.

I don't think Mayu has some ill intent, but I think she'll become a problem for Kumiko.

My best guess is she'll quickly play a major role in the club dynamic (her nickname is "mama" after all), not to mention being 3rd year and an extremely skilled player, and may fuel Kumiko's insecurities about her role as president and Eupho player. We see how uncomfortable Kumiko got dealing with the Tsubame/Suzume sisters and how she kicked herself over it afterwards. She still relies on Tsukamoto and Reina a lot running things. I think Reina judged the situation correctly when she criticized Tsukamoto for putting too much pressure on Kumiko with the song selection. Mayu may show her up in a lot of these areas (probably unintentionally), which Kumiko (and possibly the entire club) will have to deal with.

Alternatively, it's possible Mayu values harmony and morale within the club the most (assuming her offer to sit out of the club was genuine), which may come into conflict with Kumiko and Reina's dedication to win gold at the Nationals at all costs.

91 band members is insane wtf

Absolutely loved the second episode. Soundtrack, characters, first years, everything feels in its place. But I do wish Mayu's uniform is going to change in the next episodes... I really don't like that blue uniform. OP is alright, I like Blast! from second season more. Ending is very cute, not my cup of tea but it follows the essence of this show and its endings.

The last speech from Reina sounded bold and problematic. Hope that causes some drama in the next weeks.

The Sunrise Festival is drawing closer, and the band is getting acquainted with one another...

I can't help but feel a sense of apprehension when I see Mayu Kuroe, because while we haven't heard her play outside of the bit that Kumiko heard in the last episode, I get the sense that she might blow the rest of the band out of the water. Thus, she asked Kumiko whether or not her presence would be welcome, since it might disrupt the already established relationships in the band, since she is a transfer student and all, along with the fact she'd be playing the euphonium as well. Apart from that, I am really enjoying the dynamic between Kanade and Mayu, and with Kanade, I get the sense she is quite aware of the people around her, and recognizes Mayu's talents. Of course, Kumiko's role as president meant that she also had heightened responsibility, so she had to deal with more challenging tasks, like settling arguments as well, which we are already seeing so far. Kyoto Animaton's production values were also amazing as always, and that last scene with Kumiko and Reina really blew me away with how beautiful it was. Next week cannot come fast enough!

@perseii Interesting perspective. I can definitely see Mayu unintentionally changing the club dynamic, but I trust that Kumiko along with Reina and Shuuichi are mature enough to handle any drama that arises and ultimately push the club towards their goal of gold at nationals.

Characters dynamic is easier to understand when you try to compare them to the first season.

Kumiko = Kaori (Girl everyone(?) love)
Kanade = Yuuko (Fangirl)
Mayu = Reina (Someone who appear to shake the balance)

I wonder why Mayu said she would quit any time. There's definitely foreshadowing with her and Kumiko's conversation about someone getting left out of the competition.

Reina's right. No one else would have agreed on the piece like her, Kumiko, and Shuuichi.

It's time for SunFes practice!

Scene with Kumiko and Reina on the bench was so good. And the way how the clouded sky cleared out once they chose "Hitotose no Uta" was magnificent.

Lovely second episode. Interesting how this season seems to be following the same direction Season 1 had.
Still not sure what to think of Kuroe tho. She acts way too kind for my liking.

Yeah I'm biased with kyoani. ♡
I need somebody who can love me at my worst
No, I'm not perfect, but I hope you see my worth
'Cause it's only you, nobody new, I put you first
And for you, girl, I swear I'll do the worst

If you stay forever, let me hold your hand
I can fill those places in your heart no else can
Let me show you love, oh, I don't pretend, yeah
I'll be right here, baby, you know I'll sink or swim

@Daisuki Mayu is a Euphonium player. I cannot see Kumiko getting left out of the competition via the audition, so it would have to be Kanade. This is just my speculation but from the opening theme visuals, we see Kumiko and Mayu performing, and not Kanade, so it may just be the case that Kanade is the one who is left out.

Man Mayu sounds so good. Her voice is so soft that I expect her voice to shake or crack at some point but Tomatsu Haruka manages to keep it stable. Stark contrast to Kurosawa Tomoyo's Kumiko who always sounds unstable and nervous. Impressive.

"Wouldn't it suck if someone has to switch instruments or gets left out of the competition because of me?" What a fucking flex lmaoo. Whether she is or isn't aware about it she disses the entire club members loll.

Everything was good until Kanade enters the screen. I dislike her after all.

Another great episode and the opening is also great. Soundscape is still my favorite but ReCoda may grow on me.

I love how Kuroe's character is written. When she asked about joining the band, her words may have seem stand-offish due to already assuming that someone wont get to play when she joins, but that just shows how much she knows her level as a musician, like, come on, she came from Seira High, THE National level school band in the story.
No doubt that Kuroe and Kumiko will be competing for 1st chair, and I cant wait to see how this pans out.

So Mayu WAS a transfer student! I had an inkling last episode, but that makes the most sense, honestly. The OP/ED being a bop once again, plus the satisfying Yuri moments made my day, honestly, which only got better because I also watched the first episode of Whisper Me a Love Song afterwards, lol~!=v=3

I think Taki-Sensei asking the three to choose the piece was also a sign of trust as he hopes that they will be able to do something their seniors couldn't do in years prior, that trust is only possible because he's been there at Kitauji for as long as they were, so he's more familiar with them, I feel, vs the older students. Its also thanks to the synerygy between the current leaders though, as Reina indicates in this episode. I like the new relations shown here, though I'm afraid of getting more drama from Kanade since the way she addresses Mayu feels strangely similar to how she was with Natsuki before. Maybe it's just a me thing though and everything will be fine, hopefully..>.>3

With this new character, things are being implied that yes Kumiko's year this year might be competitive and full of band drama. Also the presentation of the selection piece 'Hitotose No Uta' was so beautiful. Wonderful imagery and animation that flowed with the soloistic melodies of the woodwinds. Very much look forward to seeing if Kumiko will rise/prevail in keeping her spot, as well to see the band's ability and rehearsing when it comes to this next piece.

There's this sense of dread whenever Mayu's involved... I feel like there might be an issue in terms of who gets to perform with the euphonium in the competition. I sure hope that doesn't come true.

I love seeing Kumiko paying attention to everybody though. That's exactly how she's well-suited to become the president. She might think she's not fit for it, but she definitely is. She doesn't immediately take action. You can see her observing, thinking. But later on, she's the one who knows how best to solve the situations.

Also, I like how Kanade is not warming up to Mayu that much lmao
