Well this was a heavy episode. Felt surreal and so hard to digest. I think I'm gonna have to rewatch this to just process everything that happened.

We are finally learning more about Kiyo-pon's past and about white room. The situation with Kiyo-pon is the similar to El from Stranger Things.

Chairman was also a nice surprise there. The thing with recommendation got me really curious as well.

We are going beyond the boundaries of highschool now and it strangely feels very intruging. It also feels like Sakayanagi sensei might become an ally for Kiyo-pon or Kiyo-pon might become Sakayanagi sense's pawn, I'm guessing this from that one scene from the OP. In any case shit just got more interesting.

Following Kiyo-pon's dad scene, two severe nuclear bombs were dropped and I couldn't believe it. First was Kiyo-pon deciding to stop trying for class A and second was him cutting off Karuizawa. Poor Karuizawa. What's going on through Kiyo-pon's head only he knows.

Really though what is he gonna do from now on? Have a normal highschool life with his friends from the study group? Of course not but I'm looking forward to see what turn this takes now. The main objective till now was to do everything posible to excel in tests and stuff to gain points and reach class A. That motive has ceased to exits, what now?

Looking forward to next episode.

That was indeed a turn of events. Totally unexpected. I didn't think something like that was going on in the background. Now that Ayanokoji has no reason to do any of that, what's he supposed to do? Let's wait and see.

But, that conversation on the phone was sad. Kei is a nice girl and I want her to be happy. And, she likes Ayanokoji.

Uh, there's definitely more mysterious elements to discover regarding that school and how it works especially with Ayanokouji's father coming wanting him to leave but the school protecting him against that, same for how the teacher was behind that from the beginning, now Ayanokouji won't help the class to gain rank anymore...

The Paper Shuffle ended up being yet another uneventful situation to everyone, though that's different for Ayanokouji, Horikita and Kushida. Though people can get along with each other from different classes, it's the festivity of Christmas at play...though if you already look hard at the stoneless protag, you'll already know that he has someone he has set his sights on.

But, this is the stalking game in which Ayanokouji is keeping tabs on with Kei's help, though at this point the latter is just the tool used for spying spies, and this is in addition to Ryuen's Class C losing the Paper Shuffle and left to interpret its mastermind. Honami Ichinose with Ayanokouji with the library scene, it just screans nice with an innocent girl that's not part of the ruse, but who can say for real if it's one.

FINALLY, we get to see Ayanokouji's dad after the incident in the White Room (something which is hinted at the very start of Season 1 but not prefaced much) and what goes on in the family, and it's very clear that the son is not interested in his dad's business of following his footsteps, as per the forced withdrawal out of the school that's not by choice. Instead, his former benefactor-cum-school Chairman Sakayanagi (daughter to Class 1-A's Arisu) decides to keep him seeing that he has potential in the school's policies. This is true for Chabashira-sensei whom has always used Ayanokouji for her own exploits for choose classmates with the potential to reach Class 1-A, but was handed the wrong hand with people lower than what she'd expect, and the Chairman's reveal broke all the linking chains of her lies and deception.

The last time that Ayanokouji will use Kei for his plans, and he is done with her, at least for now as a transactional relationship. And yes, one can feel bad for Kei, but she's been naturally thrust towards him thanks to her personality.

What's on Ayanokouji's head, who will ever know what goes from here on out?

The second half of this season has been better than the first but I am honestly beginning to tire of the MC. Such a flat character. It's been almost two seasons and we know nothing about him. Sure he is smart but that's it. He has no growth and it really drags the show down.

This entire episode just reminded me of why he’s my top 1 MC. The interactions with his dad and then calling sensei out on her bullshit were awesome. Only You-Zitsu could make mundane conversations so hype lol. Solid episode

How many seasons should I have to watch to know a character at least a little bit. Two seasons in all we know is he is a manipulative jerk with no emotion and there is nothing to suggest that will change.

I love Ichinose but I agree with Miyake, she is so perfect that I can't help but be suspicious. Same with Hiyori, she's so cute that two episodes already made me love her, Rie Takahashi's soft voice is so lovely. But given the series this is and the class she's in, I can only hope she's not hiding anything.

I'm happy to have some Sakura content even if it's short. Hasebe teasing her xD.

I always like the interactions between Horikita and Ayanokouji. By the way, I hope he returned the book.

Sure Kiyopapa, the butler who helped your son escape died from a fire he started... sure. Also, all this time I thought the white haired guy they showed with Ayanokouji in the OP was his father lol. Interesting that it's Sakayanagi's though.

Poor Karuizawa, we all know how Ayanokouji is but cutting off contact with her just like that is definitely cold. There's still Ryuen targeting her so let's see what's next for them.

In the end at least no one was expelled from the class during paper shuffle. The thing is though if Ichinose wasn't the leader of Class B then they would have one more class gunning for them. Now that Ryuen suspects a masterminds at play tailing them will be something that i expect. After all he's someone that always pays those that wronged him back with interest to spare. The school library sure was impressive. Also a great way to befriend as yet neutral parties of other classes as well. If anything they sure have some really rare books there. Still the interaction between the two was really cute. But never expected we'll see Ayano's father at this point. Still kudo's to Arisu's father for standing by his duty in the face of Ayanokouji's father. Being a celeb though will be the opposite of what Ayanokouji really wants. Kinda hard to plan when everyone is watching your every move. Though as a LN reader i know that last scene would change within it its still kinda sad that Kei's last contact outside of class with Ayanokouji at that point was a three minute phone call. Overall while they omitted a few things to keep things moving this ep did well to show where things stand in the rankings while also expanding upon new characters like Hiyori.

I loved it, I had been waiting for this father x son meeting for a long time, even skipping all the chapters in the LN just to read it. it was a bit short and I do feel like they could have milked it a liiittle bit more but still. Sometimes I forget how shitty Ayanokoji´s life had to be in that white room. Also that last call with Kei? :/ damn.

p.s. a cute moment with the class c bookworm. boy is collecting girlfriends just by breathing.

The peak is when Ayanokoji exposed to her sensei that she just want to use Ayanokouji to get to class A cuz she always ended up didn’t get gifted students in her class every year but this year she did get which is Ayanokoji. And the heartbreaking parf is where Ayanokoji told Kei that he will no longer be contacting Kei as he no longer has the mission for class A pursuit and Kei reaction is so damn sad 😞😞😞

If you want to see growth and emotion from him, you should probably read the light novel. The anime cuts out most of those things and his thoughts to make it seem like he has no emotions.

How many seasons should I have to watch to know a character at least a little bit. Two seasons in all we know is he is a manipulative jerk with no emotion and there is nothing to suggest that will change.

1) Read the LN. + They wont tell you his past at the start of the story. Probably there ll be 3 years and we re at 3/4 of the first year so its normal thet they wont tell you everything, you need some mistery around his character. Thats the one of the most hyped things in the LN and it ll be released and the end of this year.

2) He is a perfect human trying living a normal life. In this school he is trying the standard school life: like going out with friends, interacting with people, helping them with studing etc.. The changes are that he is now becoming more Normal but of course he cant stop being what he is, he cant forget his past even if he is trying to change he cant do it right now because he doesnt know how normal things works. Thats the point of the character excaping his WhiteRoom best product title and being a normal person.
And you started discovering him a bit in this season infact we saw some progress: he finally made a group of friends, a trusty girl to take care, he became more popular due to the race and also got his 1st confession.
He just want be normal. Thats the good/different part of this story because most of the time is the opposite where the MC is normal and he wants to become the KING, or the FIRST in something etc.. (because he already is).
And being normal is also very important to him so he can manipulate and do whatever he wants without showing himself and staying hidden and he can use this to achieve different goals easier.

And in the anime they dont show you what ayanokoji thinks everytime something happen. He has some emotions but he doesnt show it. Sometimes he said he is happy, or he said he likes and enjoy going out with his friends or having a girlfriend but they cut it off. So maybe its normal that you consider him empty. (i still didnt finished reading all of the LN so i dont know if something changed in the last volumes).

I loved how we finally see some of Ayanokoji's background. Even if it's not much. We get to see his father and some insight on what he's like. I also like how Ayanokoji figures out his teacher was lying on her having a connection with his dad. It then lets him be free from any consequence she could have done.

Bro nothing happened...how was this episode any good. Just boring Dialogue and A basically telling Kei 'See ya later"
Like for him to say "I just wanted to talk to you" and then "bye" was just silly.

So what his plan now just learn in class? I mean I know some shit will happen but this was just a bad episode.

Only good part of the episode was the beginning with Airi and Hasebe acting like Normal students and Cute girl Hiyori

I am really satisfied on how they adapted this episode, there wasn't any glaring changes that made me dislike anything and the meeting with Ayanopapa was as intense in the Light Novel.

The ending bit really hits home the effect Kiyotaka's father had on him and seeing Kei's discomfort was all the more saddening.

Definitely can't wait for next weeks episode where my boy Koenji has his time to shine.

I disagree, I feel like the anime didn’t do this encounter justice. Imo the encounter wasn’t nearly as intense, but the thing that really bothered me was sae, in the LN she’s nervous before and after the meeting, ayanokouji even says she looks shaken, in the anime we see none of this. I really hope the final 2 episodes and especially ‘the big moment’ have better animation, since this is arguably the best arc of the series so far. I’m also pretty concerned about the seemingly slow pacing, but I guess we’ll see how that plays out

The "mastermind" who ultimately cares about nothing just isn't interesting.

Its a problem of the anime. It cuts out entirely the points where Ayanokoji expresses some emotion through his inner thoughts. There is definitely something there its just shoved down so deep.

By this point in the novels we should already be aware of the fact he hates that side of himself that is calculating, cunning, cold and manipulative. But he will continue to do so as a defense mechanism as he has always been conditioned to do whatever it takes to survive.

He came to this school for freedom and to learn of the normal world that his father rejects. He wants to be normal for once, to have friends, to learn what romance is and to experience it. But obviously due to the nature of the school and the threat of his teacher he was forced to throw that away and "do whatever it takes to survive" in this school as he's always been conditioned to do.

There's for sure some depth there to Ayanokoji that the anime for some reason shoves into the darkness never to be seen again by anime onlys. Which is a huge shame really.

Its the same reason why Touma Kamijou from A Certain Magical Index is looked on as a generic and boring hero protagonist by anime onlys when the novels clearly show he's anything but a typical hero. Light novels seem to get it the worst when it comes to getting an adaptation. And COTE is no different.
Again its a shame.

Looks like I made a typo in my comment, I meant it was not as tense in the light novel, the rest of what you are saying is just the by product of cutting the content, next weeks episode is going to be extremely fast paced.
