There's a ninja in the class. That's all it took for me to label this show as "unrealistic.

I think you’re mixing up introversion and social anxiety. If you have social anxiety or communication disorder Komi’s behaviour will seem very realistic but if you are an introvert you won’t find Komi relatable or realistic. Komi is realistic to me because just like her I literally can’t communicate with people but I want to. Interacting with people online is lot easier since you’re writing it down but in real life communicating with people is really hard. I am not hating on you or anything, everyone has different experiences, just giving my perspective.

She's very realistic to me; exaggerated because anime, of course, but still pretty grounded.
My real life girlfriend is almost exactly like her (or at least was earlier in her life) and our relationship formed in a pretty similar way to what happened in the series between her and Tadano, and even continues to now.

Be genuine to people and don't be afraid to expose your weaknesses, that's all I'll say.

Life can be cruel and unfair. At worst it can traumatize and cripple you. The desire for wanting things to return to the way they were can cost everything and changes nothing. The best way is to keep moving forward, struggle on.
Anger can be powerful but can only get you so far. Let people into your life even if some of them leave you in time.

Fight. Like. Hell. For everything and everyone you love. Always.

have to get in a word or two but I think differentiating the comedic aspects to the actual narrative tone to the show is essential. Comedic stuff are never meant to be taken seriously in the first place thats why for me they should be ignored when realizing if something is realistic or not. And that is mainly where everyone is fawning over Komi, its a joke. Its always used as a joke, and I think its effectively implied that it is and its not always happening.

Breaks happen where its just Komi and Tadano alone or even right at the first episode where Komi is left alone if not for Tadano napping. Groups form without Komi and they play games like that time with Yamai and the others. Everytime something happens around Komi that implies how she is misunderstood is a joke and all.

I think the ED of season 1 and 2 represents these stuff the most. We saw glimpses of Komi's junior high in ED 1, that with different circumstances, Komi's appearances alone coudnt give her a single friend. And with ED 2, we saw how the classroom actually interacts, when everyone is vacant nobody actually fawns over Komi but they each have their own initiatives and happenings. Tadano is about the only one that really interacts with her and even leaves her alone (well yamai is there I guess for the joke again). Those scenes just feel natural and normal. So yea, the jokes might be over the top but at surface level, I think their representation is amazing.

Your first and major mistake is that you're equating your personal experience with introverts at large respectively this character.

Don't act like as if you know what being an introvert means ( in general).

Secondly, this series isn't meant to be (entirely) realistic.

Watamote and Silent Voice had an entirely different focus than Komi-san. The comparison doesn't make sense and there are no double standards.

I barely can remember watching any "realistic" anime, and it didn't stop me from continue watching it.
But what I can say for sure is that this show is a lot of fun, especially for someone who had social anxiety, even when it is super exaggerated in this show.

Also as a comedy show, I see no reason why it should be realistic at all. Exaggerations is a well known technique in comedy (and standups) in general.

I started crying just by watching the beginning. To think how I was treated for having social anxiety and being plain ugly... Nobody tried too hard to understand, I just got shunned and isolated, even more if I tried to speak, I guess I just seemed creepier because nothing comes out right. In my class we had a quiet, very beautiful girl and the way people treated her was like they treat Komi here. Of course boys objectified her a lot so that's something I haven't suffered from. We also had a girl who was really funny and talkative, easy to approach, but not so "pretty" and she was well liked.

If I didn't have painful personal experience I'd probably like the comedic set up. I did like the way the difficulty to speak was portrayed, feeling exactly that stuck inside myself a lot.

Not really replying to the question, just needed to get this out of my system.

In the last episode after the credits the author dedicates the anime to those who suffer from the same condition, communication disorder, so it is a legitimate condition but it is probably hyperbolized for the sake of the character and story. Remember that there are people who have been through traumatic events and lost the ability to speak.

How is that even a question lol

She's made to be perfect except for her "non verbal" problem the MC will try to help her with, it's "her thing"
Non-verbal is a just the cherry on the cake
- Physic of a top model
- Good in everything because why not (studies & sports)
- She's loved and admired by everyone because of that

I remember reading the manga and finding it infuriating how she had it easy in life with non verbal issues

It's just a waifu bait series like so many nowadays, many series with a girl MC name in the title too now
Takagi, Uzaki, Nagatoro, Kaguya, Ayumu... (oh wait in this one it's the guy name lol)

I prefer characters with communications problems like Sawako in Kimi ni Todoke.

Seeing as how the condition that Komi is struggling with is the exact same condition that I've had since birth, I can tell you the way that part of her character is portrayed is completely realistic. It's called Selective Mutism, or the more extreme Total Mutism, where you can't bring yourself to talk even to your own family. The only way I can bring myself to communicate with others is through writing things down on my phone or paper. Back when I first found the manga online, I couldn't stop myself from crying, because here was someone who actually understood how it feels to be living with this disability. That scene between the two of them spending the entire class period "talking" to each other on the chalkboard is something I wish could have ever happened to me growing up, but instead all I got was bullying. So yes, it is a bit unrealistic, but if it really showed what life was like with Selective Mutism, no one would want to watch or read it.

I'd say that Komi Shouko's an extrovert with an extreme case of social anxiety disorder. Mainly because how happy and excited she feels everytime she makes a new friend or after she interacts with someone during a gathering in contrast to Shousuke who's an actual introvert because he clearly has no issue communicating with anyone if necessary but you can see how exhausted he feels at the end of every chapter with him and Hitomi

It's purpose is not to be realistic. I mean the fact that everyone treats Komi like a princess despite her flaws is indicative of that. If this was real life, Komi would be hit on by most guys, but ultimately she would find it hard to make meaningful friendships.

Komi can't communicate is super unrealistic to me. Here's my reasoning.

I'm also an introvert myself and I haven't behaved like Komi at all lmao. And with the characters just accepting that Komi is socially awkward but they still remain as her friend really bugs me. So many people around me ask the same question "Why are you so silent" and it makes me look like a weirdo. I do make a couple of friends but when I don't talk to them for sometime, they just leave me like that but in Komi san's case, everyone just keep clinging to her even when she doesn't talk at all and this annoys me so much.

It's almost like, the Author doesn't know a thing about what being an introvert actually means. Ngl, he nailed Komi's characterization. When the Narrator keeps saying every episode "Just because these people don't talk doesn't mean they don't want to talk, they just can't" this line always makes me smile. It's the side characters that is completely ruining the atmosphere of what could've been the next "Silent Voice"

I've seen people hating Watamote for being unrealistic, but people are loving this. Yet again, double standards in the community is playing it's role.

I guess there's a difference between social anxiety and being a introvert. I believe they even said this in one of their episode.

No, case of Komi san is not unrealistic i do have a friend who legit can not talk to anyone face to face and ends up avoiding irl conversations as much as he can, eh even limits the amount of words when he talks to me, So i don't think it's anything unrealistic.

Your classmates just leave your friend alone right? In Komi san's case, they keep clinging to her even when she doesn't talk. That's what bugs me a lot.
Isaac_02 said:
Actually, Everything that happens to her is real.
Even if you're not talking, There are two basic factors for attracting people.
Because she's a girl and also because she's beautiful.
If you have these two things, You don't need communication skills.

Yes, if she was ugly, I bet everyone would've avoided her.

Yeah, I also thought this from the start. If she were ugly, she would be depressed and suicidal. Not popular and everyone worships her.
