Holy moly. This is probably the most impressive shogi match I've watched from Sangatsu so far.

Like I said in my post from last week's episode, I was split 50/50 between Shimada and Saku and it stayed that way until the conclusion of the match. Did it pain me that Shimada lost? Of course it did. It waould've been a bittersweet feeling regardless of who won, but either way, Shimada can hold his head high. He'll keep on improving until he finally wins a title one day. =)

As for Saku, he gave it his all and the weight of expectations from friends and colleagues alike might've been heavy, but he was able to take on that burden and was able to become the Eternal Kishou. That long match would exhaust a lot of young players, so playing that long as he approaches nearly 70 must've been almost torture on his body. Still, that only makes me respect the guy even more. =)

Shaft can pat themselves on their back once again in this incredible season. The whole match, including Saku's burnt field segments, had wonderful animation, detailed visuals and powerful soundtrack that gave each scene life and power that was mesmerising. It was simply superb.

Next week has the Kawamoto sisters returning. I miss them so much! =3

What a match! One of the best 2 episodes of anime I've seen so far.

Ah, what a delightful depiction of an intense mental battle.

It is a bit saddening that the Kishou match came to an end, I really enjoyed Yanagihara's contemplations. Despite the fact that Shimada had to face defeat again, I am relieved. Yanagihara truly came through the ordeal and then some, his mental fortitude and competence, with a hint of youthful ingenuity, are commendable. He is a worthy bearer of the Eternal Kishou title.

It seems that members of the Kawamoto household are ready to provide some relief after such a heavy (in more ways than one) arc.

Yanagihara deserved that win over Shimada, because he held on to fragments of his fellows, and never gave in even if people were criticising him or left him. That was an optimistic old man who inspired me, too bad for Shimada though.

This ep was great, with great visuals and very inspirational.

Is Shimada every going to get a fucking win? That's what makes episodes like this boring to me. Since Shimada is always set up as the fall guy for whoever the other character is.

Before it was showing how god tier Souya is for the first time. And now its because boohoo old guy is said that all of his friends retired since they had real life shit to deal with.

Another brilliant episode!
the OST feels like the despair OST of Madoka which is EPIC!
Damn! old geezer Yanagihara still win against Shimada!
Yanagihara now receives the title "Eternal Shogi Maestro"! everyone who is rooting for the old geezer was full of joy!
The symbolism feeling was perfect like the cloth like bandages fluttering away of the old man! they really nail it! especially the visuals at 20:38-21:07 was very impressive!
5/5.

It was really inspirational to see Saku-san get over his struggles to move ahead without being bound and also because of being held. Damn what a irony!
Shimada lost but he will be back at it again with a new blade. This guy really blends em smooth!

This season just hasn't hit home for me like the last one did. The showdown between Saku and Shimada. Though at times gripping and entertaining. Mostly felt like one of those anime parodies. You know where they're like "yahtzee" or some ridiculous shit the anime. And they take ridiculous stock anime tropes and apply it to something mundane and absurd. They definitely tried to make it intense.

I did like Saku's story overall. The idea of the twilight of someone's career. Where they're the last of their generation standing. Is a moving and interesting one. Even though I kind of wish he would have lost. I don't fault them for doing the happy ending. But the relay sash/human torch symbolism. Never hit home for me. Quite the way Shimada's waves did last season. It was kind of a strained visual metaphor. And I don't think the execution was all that great. It's sad too cause I vastly prefer the shogi to the SoL side of the series. But in all counts this season has felt more rushed and clumsy to me than the previous. Hope it ends strong. I still like the show and think it's one of the better ones airing.

Perfect animation, this episode is just too good, and it felt so short, even though the story of Yanagihara wasn't all that interesting to me at first. But the way it is told, damn, this season keeps amazing me each time.

Holy crap, this arc has been absolutely amazing. I couldn't help but cheer for Saku, even though I've professed myself to be the biggest Shimada fangirl. I still am, but seeing how Saku pulled himself forward using the his feelings towards his friends ... man. The visuals were absolutely on point this episode - the scene in the second half with Saku and the flames was soooooo good. The photo was super cute, and man, Shimada I hope you win next year, but I'm really happy Saku was able to get the Eternal title as well. This shogi match was so intense and I don't even really know the game that well! I am really loving S2 even though IMO the first arc dragged on a bit too long for me, but I might end up giving this season a 9 as well because the quality is equally on par as the first I think :P

Honestly they spent too much time on this arc. I don't really care about old man Jenkins and his shogi title. I would like to have seen some of this time used on characters that effect the MC. Maybe some Kyouko time so we can see her character growing. Honestly I personally hate that we haven't seen that much of Kyouko this season. I think the drama she brings in is actually 10 times more interesting than old man Jenkins thinking he is the human torch for 30 minutes. Kyouko is one of the few characters that isn't paper thin and it's annoying that they don't give us anything Kyouka time...

Amazing...that's what I can say about this show. They're really great to express their characters emotion into anything, and I'm really happy to see the old generation still have a really young passion, seriously I'm really happy. When I watch the Kishou match, I can only say, whoever wins, I'll cheer for them because both Yanagihara and Shimada already gave their best despite their health condition is not 100 percent, and honestly I'm really happy. Now I know why this show gets a really high rating...

What an impressive episode! The soundtrack was amazing as well, got me curious on who's the composer.

Yanagihara's monologue regarding life was very powerful. Seriously, I've watched Sangatsu because of its deep and meaningful lessons but this episode took the cake. It was poetic how they viewed Yanagihara's life and struggles with shogi and I loved it. I felt bad for Shimada. Poor guy has to deal with another lose again.

Holy hell is this an intense match! SHAFT's visual flares turns up the notch on the mood and atmosphere. Totally digging the symbolism with the old tree! Just like everyone in the audience was at edge I was too. Unlike Rei matches you sorta get the feel where the story is progressing for him and whether he will win or lose. The desperation from the old man, Saku, to hold tightly towards the only thing he is good at. What a relatable thought. Can't believe Shimada lost again.

True Man this was one hell of a match. And Shaft is brilliant at it again with their visual representation of emotions.

Wow, I have no words. This was so emotional on many levels and their hopeful message was delivered so brightly!

SHAFT really overdid themselves AGAIN (how many times did I said this in this series?) They delivered audio-visual explosion of shounen battle in its truest form coupled with encouraging life messages hidden underneath. I applaud.

Same opinion, this is probably one of the 2 best, or even the best episode in the series, Shaft couldnt have conveyed it more properly than this, and even the manga probably wasnt as good as this.

best episode in the whole series for me..

yeah at first I was also like, "I don't really care about the side characters" but I've given it some thoughts and honestly, main character, side character, all those don't matter, what matters is how you relate to the story being presented. This mangaka has been developing random side characters that don't really matter since the very beginning, and everytime I thought that I didn't care, ended up being immersed in each of their very own story.

This episode in particular is more so relatable because of the circumstances around me, retiring of old age sure sucks, many people have been working for decades and spent most of their active time at work, so it's relatable to suddenly lose all of those and lose sight of the purpose in your life.. it's easy to just give it all up and not care, but it's badass to come back in such a way where you've persevered long enough, and the whole thing came full circle when Saku asked Gan to take the picture, finishing his 10th title and dubbed as the eternal meijin (or something).

This was such a brilliantly animated shogi match it was astounding. I love how Shimada was silently complaining about how there was no way an old player like Yanagihara could be making these movies. I still have no idea what any of this means even after spending nearly two months watching this show, but it was still cool to watch! Yanagihara comparing Shimada to a Japanese zelkova tree is a great metaphor for his growth. I thought he was going to compare himself to a tree stump, but I'm glad he didn't. I love how he thinks he is going to die every single match he plays. I guess that is a genuine fear as you get older. I loved the animation as he pulled back the burdens and played a super interesting move like moving his King forward. This truly seems to be one of the most intense shogi matches we have seen yet. These two players are truly completely evenly matched. I didn't expect Shimada to lose, all things considered. I do believe this was the best outcome though. Yanagihara deserved this victory. The match was so exhausting they just outright skipped the post-match review, huh. Nikaidou is so cute. Shimada had the exact face I would have had. "You want me to take a commemorative photo... for a match I lost?" I love how his supporters switched allegiance so quickly. I like how the photo came out.

Well, here i feel like im the middle of people who actually love shogi and got completely represented by this anime, enjoying the very least piece.

I'm not like this, i feel nothing for shogi. But i must recognize how a good anime can make even what is supposed to be ultra boring for non-enthusiasts of the theme, become very interesting.

The art, the pace, the OST, the lines, everything was thought to be perfect, just like the moves of these pro-shogists.

Btw that picture in the end. The harmony in the distribution of the people in the image pleases me in a way that could cure my OCD, if i even had it.
