Truely the best thing this season as far as i'm concerned, tho i wished it was either faster paced until they went to Antarctica or a 2 cour anime.

Because i know very well that 3-4 episodes out on the ice won't satisfy me.

Nice that we had a glimpse at the backstory of the expedition. It seems the original team was going to set up an observatory when Shirase's mom was lost. Many of the little details make for a compelling episode. Nice sense of mystery before the girls discover the true story when they're eavesdropping near the telescope.

Looks like rough seas next ep.

This anime is too good and it gets better with every episode that it might even get a 10 at the end of the season at least from me, on a side note does anyone know the name of the OST that started playing at the end?

Another 10/10 episode, how do they keep churning out such quality, original content week after week?!

The adults are literally grown up versions of the 4 girls with Shirase's mother seeming to be like a combination of the 4 in terms of personality and appearance. It was nice to see them joking around like kids :-D

I wonder how things will turn out for Shirase's mom, how does one survive in Antarctica for 3 years? Will She even be there when the expedition arrives?

Hmm after this episode I think we can probably say Shirase's mother is 100% dead. Honestly I would be disappointed if not, it would be a little forced I think. Anyways this show is so good, too sad its only 6 more episodes to go.

I love how this series even if they are stretching the posabilities a bit are taking it mostly seriously about how easy it is, the problems that can arise and such.

-this opening scene actually doesn't make it seem like bodies are about to fuckin drop
-or maybe it does
-alright this ship scene seems pretty vanilla slice-of-life-y
-after hearing the conversation on the bridge i changed my mind
-oh never mind, the captain was talking about the lack of interest in the expedition rather than foreshadowing a disaster
-yeah i changed my mind there's a shit-ton of ominous foreshadowing here
-yeah this jumped straight from foreshadowing to just shadowing
-kanae's speech just opened the possibility of a sakura quest-like direction for the show to go
-the new season of princess principal looks great
-hinata's bored face throughout all of this was pretty funny
-title drop roll the end credits
-gin's little speech to shirase also pushes the show toward a sakura quest-like direction
-like mother like daughter (unless i'm confusing the girl in the flashback for someone else)
-wait never mind that woman just fuckin stabbed someone with a chopstick, people are going to die
-gettem shirase

So yeah this episode made it pretty clear where the show's going to be headed from now on. What I found remarkable about it was that it seems to be going in an entirely different direction that I originally anticipated. From the hints that were being dropped in the previous episodes, I thought Gin and Kaede's little expedition group would either stay as relatively minor characters (if the show went the true slice of life route) or become the primary antagonists (if the show did a complete 180). From the backstory described by Gin in this episode, it's probably really likely that the rest of the expedition crew becomes kinda like a secondary group of protagonists. Speaking of which, I think I do like how the recurring members of the expedition and the 4 main girls all seem to have a sense of unity by virtue of being dream chasers (although I can't remember Hinata's motivation for joining the expedition off the top of my head). I'm just a big sucker for underdog stories and the main cast is already pretty entertaining, so I have pretty high hopes for the rest of the show.

As for the episode itself, it seems like the entire point of it was to build up to the expedition rally (is that what you call it) at the end. The frequency of comedic moments pretty much had to be lessened in order to do that, but I'm pretty fine with that because everyone's resolve to disprove the rest of the world and show up the haters got reaffirmed in this episode. I happen to think that's a pretty fair tradeoff because now we know what the show is about. For the most part, at least, because as far as I know they could all just inadvertently end up proving everyone right in some sort of freak accident.

And I just realized it while typing this, but Shirase basically soft confirmed that she knew her mom was dead the entire time again, and for some reason I think that's pretty poetic, all things considered.

Regardless of what's going on this episode really established that this a serious story. I should have guessed they'd tease Takako being alive earlier; I only really did after the girls saw that poor geologist on the phone with her terrible boyfriend.

While it may seem to many here that there's closure on Takako, the story is puzzling. The commander's talk of wanting to be in "that place we discovered", the fact that they line everything up so that it's possible. Well, this certainly is additional motivation to watch this show as it airs.

As for the post-credit scene I don't think this anime is going to be that dark, and at any rate not in that direction. It's probably just presaging the girls' shock at being in the waves XD

This anime surpasses my expectations since episode 1. I was expecting a 5-6/10 before starting it, yet i just bumped the score up to 8/10. This anime is really well directed, the characters are good, the story is good, the art is great and i love the soundtrack. Best non-sequel anime of the season.

I wouldn't be forced with the right foreshadowing. They actually mentioned a research station. Ofc right now it's impossible to determine if it's a real clue or just my overactive imagination.

I remember going on a ship like that. You are so going to get lost. XD

Same room that Takako slept in? Oi...why did you have to bring that up?

Based Hinata.

An astronomical observatory? There? Well that's ambitious...

THEY'RE NOT LEGAL! AYYYYY!!

Alright Shirase! She just gave everyone (including me) a big smile on their face.

So they're understaffed to head towards Antarctica, but they're determined. Looks like from here on out, the anime going to be switching from comical to dark frequently. Alright then. Here we go!

This is a nice episode! especially the part where Shirase is speaking with Toudou, and explaining her the previous team that hardships past three years of the Antarctica Expedition before.
Just as they have said, Antartica's harsh conditions are really unforgiving!
of course the girls would have worries that the expedition might not proceed as well because of lack of supplies and manpower.
Shirase's battle cry speech was very encouraging! and made many go banzai!
5/5.

This is my concern too: the show's been so good up to now, makes me wonder how it can "close" and develop properly when the Antarctica part is shrinked to such a degree.

A second season looks more and more likely, with only 6 episodes left. On one hand I'd love to have more of this story, but on the other hand I hope we don't have to wait a year or more to see the conclusion :'(

As for Shirase's mom, even if she managed to make it to some station, would she have supplies for 3 years? If the station was operative, she would probably have made contact as well. Until some plot twist comes up, I'll assume she's dead.

yep, there is no way in hell that the mom is still alive. it is impossible to survive for three years alone in the Antartica, even if she somehow by a miracle survived the Blizzard she got lost in. this is a story about grieving and finding closure, not a rescue mission with a happy ending.

if the mom somehow turns out to be alive it'd kill the series for me.

Are we still under the assumption that Shirase believes her mother is still alive? She is always looking at her mothers contact information in her phone. I think we need to remember the psychological issues this girl is going through as well. Along with the other girls too. I mean they're going to Antarctica. Which really is a humongous task.

I feel for Shirase though.

Also Sony Music and Crunchyroll are down as producers. The only problem I see with the National Institute of Polar Research being a sponsor is that they won't want it to seem a terrifying experience with a sad ending, so could affect the writting.
