Nevertheless, most reviewers criticize it for being too melodramatic. Not to mention the fact that in our time many casual people think that this is a finely thought-out parody of shoujo yuri. But in any case, Maria-sama has always been a special work for me, considering that there are almost no canonical lesbians there.

Well, for me it's Citrus the "parody" of a shōjo yuri, it checks all clichés of a smutty shōjo. This first episode it really symptomatic, with Yuzu (blonde-haired girl) falling in love after a forceful kiss by a mean-and-cold black-haired and beautiful bishōnen girl. It becomes borderline rapey a little while after if I remember the manga well.

Maria-sama is more a tribute to pre-war shōjo literature. In that way it is indeed quite "classic". You can see that for a parody I guess.

I do think that in our time Class S with its pseudo-lesbian enthusiasm is pretty much obsolete. Especially after it became excessively used for fanservice, bypassing the images of real yuri characters.

LET THE SHITSTORM BEGIN!!!!!!!!!!! The adaptation is utterly fantastic and I fucking love all the new scenes added! The pacing is solid and the direction is tense, omfg using the manga's art for the ed!!! This will be great.

Yeah that was pretty trash. I was wondering what one of the most hyped yuri in the west was like, but this was like a 5 o'clock soap opera, it did pretty much everything I loathe.

Won't waste any more time on it.

Y'know, I get what this show is trying to do and the steps it's taking to make that obvious are appreciated, but it's really pushing the envelope to the point of being ridiculous. I'm actually really liking the characters, and I get that their situation is meant them close without falling into "oh you just so happen to live next door, huh?" territory. The mirrored expressions between the main pairing and the feelings of disgust, violation, and yearning made clear by those expressions are all fascinating to analyze and I like that about this show. It's got a narrative to sell and it's selling it well, but that single contrived decision is making me want to walk away.

@Churchboy666 I certainly understand everything, but did she ask permission from Yuzu before kissing her? With your logic, this is also rape.

Yes it was rape as well. I never denied that. And no I'm not justifying it on either end. Mei in response to being sexually abused started sexually abusing someone else. It's extremely messed up. Like I said earlier, she isn't really well in the head; although it's worth noting that it's a fairly realistic response. People in real life sometimes take out sexual frustration on others after being abused themselves.

Oh, then I withdraw my claims. At the same time, I'm already a little tired of the trope "forced marriage of a lesbian ojou with a male". Yuri authors really need to find more opportunities for drama with the sexuality of the characters.

Nice art and animations, faithful to the manga and some hilarious moments. Good fanservice too. Characters are a bit too cliché in my opinion, with the "rebellious new student" and the "calm student council president". But maybe that's because I read the manga.

Definitely the best yuri / shojo-ai anime I watched so far. I hope they stick to it.

That was good fun, definitely sticking with it, although I'm not a fan of yuri anime in general, I hope this does a better job in creating a compelling story and not completely fill it with shameless fan service...

Yuzu was nice at least, sort of reminds me of Yoshioka of Ao Haru Ride, the kind of explosive character that just impulsively marches into everything and ends up suffering consequences she didn't directly call for

Solid first episode tbh. Haven't read the manga but I was looking foward to it since it was announced on a totally legal website. That 30-40 sec kiss where Yuzu is just gasping for air, B O I.

But, God, these sharp elbows and knees, this Mei's char. design -_\\ Seiyus have done a good job, opening is also not bad. Matsuri looks cute in op, so I'm waiting for her.

Only one thing i dislike with the adaptation so far. The kiss between Mei and the teacher was far more different in the manga. In the manga Mei was clearly rejecting the teacher and she did not blush one bit. That´s all i dislike

So I think this is my first time actually watching an openly yuri series or at least giving one a try and...I couldn't help but to laugh my way through this first episode. I wouldn't say it's horrible or anything like that but it didn't really impress me too much. Still, it was moderately entertaining.

They screwed up so badly with that last scene imo. I've read the Manga, and I know Mei starts out as abusive there too. But they made the scene in the anime long - it was TOO rape-y. In the manga Mei basically just showed Yuzu what it was like to be forcefully kissed (Since she asked about the teacher). I don't know if it was a translation error or if the script was changed for the anime, but in the anime Mei apparently says "That's what kisses are like". So, in general then? Not at all the same tone or intention, and it makes this so much more rape-y and disturbing.

Before this happened, I liked everything about the episode. I love the manga, and they've managed to keep everything I liked about it. I was sceptical about the art style/animation when I saw the first teaser, but here in the actual anime it looks AMAZING. <3 I love how they portray Yuzu, and the voice actors for both her and Mei are so fitting. I love the color schemes, and the music and the way they mostly stick really well with the tone and feel of the manga.

Will definitely keep watching since I've been hyping this anime like crazy ever since it was announced, and it has so much going for it. Just hope they will redeem that last scene in some way, or at least (like in the manga) make it really obvious where Mei is coming from and what lies behind her actions.

(Please, just don't give us another show romanticizing rape culture. The manga managed to move past that. Please let the anime do so as well.)

Yeah, I don't like where they seem to be going with that. They portrayed it as if Mei liked it, and then follow up with that really rape-y scene with Yuzu at the end. In the manga it was really clear that Mei didn't like it, and the scene with Yuzu was just to shut her up and show her that there's nothing sweet about being kissed by force.

I don't think it's worse, I actually think it's better. You can see just how much pain Mei is in that moment from being abused, which was just summarized in a brief torment face in the manga. The staff is really putting in a lot of work communicating the feelings of both the characters through movement instead of still images and I think it works fabulously.

I'll definitely watch the episode again with your comments in mind! I hope what you say is what they're going for (Yuzu's reactions to Mei seems to point that way, I'll admit) Just have alot of fears about them ruining something ^^; It would break many hearts if they where to turn Citrus into some rape-y fanservice show without keeping the heart or depth. I hope they remember their initial audience/manga readers and why it is so loved by many. <3

Thank you for giving me some faith :D I don't think I've seen any of his other shows.

Also, watching the scene again, I do realize that it's not so strange for Mei to talk about kisses in general that way, if those are the only kind of kisses she knows/has experienced herself.

Anyway, I'm attached to the way Citrus hold it's romance, reminds me of someone I used to date. It has that cool "drama-touch" and the characters are real. Being a person who went through some things that Mei went, I can understand her actions and relate a lot. I hope she can be more open with Yuzu about the things that disturbs her. I loved the episode and I like that it is following the manga closely. But I also think that it's still to early to judge, tho. I can't wait to see the next episodes!

I wanted to like this so much, Yuzu seems like a great character, but Mei just ruins it for me. I find her more detestable than Makoto from School Days, and if that doesn't say something then I don't know what does.

Also Harumin seems so sweet! I hope to see more of her very soon.

Loved the character designs and the art. Amazing OP and great adaptation......................except for that last part, the anime made that scene more "rapey" than it needed to be. In the manga it looked like a quick kiss and stuff. Not sure why they did that, maybe to extend the time of the episode to finish the chapter. I noticed that many people did not appreciate that too much. I read the manga and I did enjoy the anime, but please no more CG shots like that again XD.

Entertaining watch so far. But I am honestly not sure how many episodes we are going to go before this becomes a complete train wreck. I am sort of annoyed by the show's art style and how they drew/colored the hair and eyes. The fact that the overall atheistic of this show felt like Hajimete no Girl on a higher budget also left a bad taste in my mouth, especially with how similar Yuzu looks exactly like the main girl from HnG, (forgot her name cuz I don't care). Animation at least so far looks quite fluid.

I guess what will make or break the show for me is going to heavily rely on how much I enjoy these characters, and the general tone this story will go. The first episode certainly hasn't made me fall head over heels over the main couple, especially Mei.

If it gets overly melodramatic I might drop it, only time will tell I guess.

Perhaps unfairly, Aoi Hana is the standard by which I judge all other yuri. The characters and situations in Aoi Hana felt completely legitimate, neither hyping anything up for comedy or fanservice. It was an emotional, visually beautiful show—something that actual gay people have enjoyed.

How does Citrus compare? It was fun! Animation-wise, Citrus is surprisingly high budget for a yuri. The episodes are the full 23-minutes, and the animation looks complete. Even the background characters, which are usually neglected if a show is low-budget, are painted in.

The main character, Yuzu, is super cheerful and likable. I'm looking forward to seeing how she tries to fit in at such a regimental all-girls school, and how the tension between her and the student council president, Mei, plays out. About a third of the way through, I stopped comparing Citrus to Aoi Hana, and started appreciating it for what it was.

A couple of minor things that baffled me: When Yuzu saw Mei making out with the teacher, why did she have to run away in the loudest way possible? >_< And, of all the girls at the school, Mei ends up living with her? That's kinda crazy, but I'll play along.

First things first, the comedic sound effects are annoying as hell. The comedy feels more forced than in the manga.

The OP's okay. It conveys the general feel of the story and characters. I have a few reservations about the singing though.

Pretty overt with the sexualness of its gayness though. As a typical fucking male degenerate, I'm totally into this, but I don't know how anyone else would react to this.

The main character's more annoying than in the manga, probably because of how they exaggerate everything about her, her voice-acting and animation. Sure, she manages to empathize with people despite her hard-headedness and that she takes on the responsibility of being an older sibling determinedly if not effectively, but her gags just aren't funny to me with all the exaggeration and it just makes it harder for me to take her seriously. I got to like her in the manga, but that was sans the voice-acting, sound effects, and character animation.

For now, I withhold my opinion on how well the show adapts the manga. It's still only the first episode.

Tbh this anime is probably going be mainly why the fuck did you do that for. I'm getting some real rapey vibes from Mei. She's going to probably rape Yuzu's feelings too.

I wonder how bad it gets?
