HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Konnichiwa

I watched your video on After the Rain. I do agree with the majority of what you said, but I want to highlight some very important details. I can see you gave this show a 9/10 while I gave it a 7.7/10

What made me watch this show was exactly the fact that this was supposed to be a romance between a middle aged man & a highschool girl. Unlike many others who were reluctant to watch it because of that. I found it interesting & I was looking forward to see how things would play out. I came for a romance. By Ep 7, I wasn't so sure anymore but I had hope he would develop romantic feelings & they would get together, watching more I knew deep down it wasn't going to happen but I wanted it to. In the end, it didn't.

The show had three options:

1) He would confess his feelings for her & they would get together
2) That would not happen but instead Tachibana would acknowledge that her love for him wasn't genuine, it isn't possible for them to date because Kondou's life would be negatively effected & accept that she was glad to meet him since they helped each other grow- she would end up doing her rehab & getting back to track and he would start writing again.
3) The same as option two, except she wouldn't go back to track but instead find a new passion for books & writing.

The show chose to go with a version of option 2). Of course I was disappointed & a little mad. But in the end I chose to judge the anime for what it is. In truth, the change of the story direction was natural & didn't feel forced or messed up. However, since the creators chose option 2) they at the very least owe us good execution, but it wasn't good enough. Reasons:

- When they both came to their final decisions to get back into their passions of writing & running, it happened at the very end & was quite rushed. ESPECIALLY for Tachibana, through the whole show she acted so indifferent towards the issue (including her conflict with Haruka) & was hardly giving it any of her attention, she always had a poker face, she hardly showed emotion towards the issue. She only decided to do rehabilitation & go back to track in the second half of the last episode for god's sake!

And for Kondou, we needed to see more of his writing/literature works & dive deeper into it, but again the show didn't do that.

- We didn't get to see her do rehabilitation/her journey towards recovery & run again, not even an epilogue!

- Kondou's family issues weren't explored, except for a five minute explanation at some point. It would have been much better if they gave his son & ex-wife more screen time.

- There is no good reason for them not to get together. It wasn't convincing enough. The reason for this is because, we could kind of see that Kondou had feelings for her & she NEVER acknowledged in WHY she shouldn't be in a relationship with him/ it was just a crush she had. Or, that she won't try to pursue him anymore. NONE of that happened.

- Option 1) would have been much more fitting as we know that her feelings for him can't just be reduced to a crush. Not only that, but the fact that she would have been the best person for Kondou to be in a relationship with. The reason why he got divorced was because he was neglecting his family as a result of his passion for writing. But he failed to realize that Tachibana was the perfect match for him because she IS THE ONE who made him go back to writing & she would be more than glad to read his work & support him (as she told him). Moreover, this could have been further development for Kondou, for him to acknowledge that his age shouldn't stop him from getting into a relationship with her. This was a great opportunity which the creators missed.

Also, I really hate how the show decide to go the safe way instead of the bold way & clearly for no convincing reasons.
People have said that they are glad the show became more than just romance, something deeper, which I assume you also believe. But why couldn't be both romance AND discovering themselves? why one or the other?

- Option 3) would have been a good idea along with option 1). Because as I mentioned above, she hardly showed concern for the whole track & field dilemma, so it seemed more like she didn't care. Including being indifferent toward Haruka's breakdown. We could see she started to have an interest in literature but again it wasn't explored. It would have made her more of an interesting character & added more to her.

Other issues with the show:
- Tachibana is a decent character & I like her straightforwardness, it's very refreshing. However, she didn't have much to her character or life. Her dilemma regarding the track & filed is also really cliché & overdone.

There are other flaws, but they are more specific so I don't feel the need to mention them here & also since I don't want to make this too long.

Yep, it was a long time. I saw it while looking for explanations of the ending but thank you again! I see, hope you see it again, I like how real it can become unlike some animes where student and adult end up together. Well just wanted to thank you again and looking forward to more of your analysis!(=´∇`=)

Hi! Just finished reading your After the Rain analysis (I just finished the anime just now and skipped to the end of the manga)
I like how you explained that not all endings can be like a fairytale and some can be vague. I really like how the manga ended. :)
Keep up the good work!

I just had the chance to travel, i saw it in theater. Unfortunately the bluray version is still without release date, same for the online release. Just wait, it'll show up practically everywhere in a few months eventually.
