Really loving this show.
I was wondering if this series was set in just our time (2016), but the flip-phones give it away: this is set in the early 2000's, about a decade ago.
This is important because they are still working with the words on the cards (anybody know the proper english word for those?).
I kept thinking during this episode: "That would be way easier if they just digitized their database of cards, it would also future proof it and save them tons of money in the long run."
The setting of the early 2000's then makes sense. Digitization was not really something most companies were thinking of, especially considering the conservative nature of many Japanese companies. (I heard that some companies still stay true to their fax machines even to this day.)

They all shipping too fast except Majime himself & he barely talked.
If those cards/example sentences are subbed it'd help a lot, feel im missing a chunk of subtext.

Aah, it's certain that Maaya Sakamoto Kaguya is real yamato nadeshiko.. I'm really looking forward to how their living with each other evolves. Let's hope there is some developement and MC opens himself too.

Guess he's prototype of many japanese men in these days. Uncertain, shy and totally dedicated to their work.

Whoa. I saw "You're a virgin?!" and then suddenly I saw "Teach me!" and I was so tired that I just straight up saw this anime in a whole other light/genre and was like, "Yooo it begins".

Apparently im not into verbal sexual intercourses.
Hence, couldn't get past this episode, that bored i was.
Dropped.

I skip on rating however, as it appears to be a fine material.
Simply not my taste.

This anime is beginning to grow on me. Nishioka and Majime's characters are so opposite, yet complimentary. The entry of a possible love interest adds a bit of spice to the episode.

Go Majime!!

Kaguya's cute! My kind of girl :D

Oh no hope the dictionary cancellation is just a rumour as they said!
I'm Bruneian and I like anime. And Manchester United. And fat cats.

Well this is quite nice development I must say. Even though the pacing is still quite slow, the overall development is getting there!

I think Kaguya is the kind of girl I could easily fall in love with. Go get her Majime!

And of course they are going to cancel the dictionary, because we need some drama.

This show just keeps getting better and better.

I really like Kaguya, even though there's still so little of her here. She seems passionate, mature, and kindhearted. I feel second-hand awkwardness from watching their interactions though, and I think in their first conversation all he said was "yes" lol.

I also love how supportive all of Majime's co-workers are! They've just heard of her and they're already shipping him with her. Matsumoto-sensei seems really wise and experienced and hearing him tell Majime about how she was a great woman and somebody that Majime can lean on was really heartwarming for me.

Opening song's growing on me, though I still feel it's out of place. But the ED song is AMAZING. It's in my playlist now.

Here's hoping for more dictionary-making and Kaguya-Majime interaction!

The Great Passage has a penchant toward over-romanticizing dictionary making, but I suppose it's needed for an anime on an otherwise dull subject matter.

On narrowing hundreds of thousands of words into approximately 250,000, therein lies a sense of bias toward words that the editors deem important enough for the current time and place. There's also the idea of an expanding vocabulary, based on current trends or words absorbed from other cultures. It reminds me of searching through dictionaries and encyclopedias for the word "anime" while in college, if just to see if they exist and how they're defined through American and British academia. Of course, either "anime" is not recognized, or if it is, it's defined erroneously or in broad strokes. In some ways, the inclusion of "anime" is a form of validation, for "anime" now exists within the western vocabulary according to these books. However, it also lends to the limited knowledge editors may have, choosing to include words only because they're in popular use, rather than because they personally understand their value. There would be more nuanced definitions for words that are recognized and studied in academia, but foreign, niche, and transient words may see less attention.

There are also words deemed too specialized, such as words from various sciences, engineering, or law that would only be useful for specific lines of work. In those cases, specialized dictionaries would be necessary, at times unnecessarily raising the level of access to various disciplines. As a result, you'd need some manner of interpreter or consultant to properly understand these specialized words. This gets even worse when comparing different languages of different bases, as well as languages like Japanese where word and character etymologies can get extremely complex.

But, I digress. Now The Great Passage is transitioning from romanticizing languages to having a romance subplot. Once again, it's understandable to make the story palatable for ordinary viewers, but I hope the anime doesn't over do it.
