Guess I was too optimistic about this anime, so far just mediocre war drama imo. This episode has some cool animation in the second half though.

I especially didn't like how it frames the German officers as plain villains, this's as simplistic as you can get for this type of story.

its only the start of the anime, this episodes purpose was to show Izetta's power and resolve, we will probably see something else with the villiains later

So far this show is pretty solid. Characters are decent, the show surprisingly has some good action, ost is good and nice art style. While I'm not expecting some huge conflict to completely stop the Germanians, I do expect their country to be saved at the very least which is fine with me. Overall good episode. Pacing is solid.

It's not about historical depiction. As someone else said, it shows lack of effort in the narrative. For a story to be good in a series like this, you shouldn't go for a black-and-white depiction. And the incompetency of a commander cliche is a very bad cliche because it gives no suspense.
Same reason why people here fear Izetta is too strong. There won't be suspense.

I don't see the obvious black and white depiction on who the good and bad guys are as a lack of effort nor does it affect how good a story can be.

Izetta was badass. The action was pretty good and I hope it stays that way for the rest of its run.

I lol'd when the soldier told Izetta not to take the rifle but she flies off with it anyways.

Contrary to everyone, the first half was less entertaining to me... Felt too much like a cheesy war drama. The 2nd half was more action packed not without flaws but it does what this anime advertise itself as. Except the tree crashing scene which felt a bit too cheerful in the middle of a fight.

I really though the tank throwing was pretty cool.
The only major issue was how they depicted the Germanian high command as your typical villain but make the good guys all heroic and willing to sacrifice. As some one said it felt like a newsreel. In terms of accuracy, and way the angles are shot... No not at all. What does feel like a newsreel is the depiction of the two sides. Black and white just like the films back in the day. It is nice to know and like both sides and gives more depth

I see it that way.
It doesn't give the villains any depth. For me I would like to know them more than just the other side. Since WW2 was brought up prior, similar thing applies. The Nazis are bad, however there are also many officers and soldiers that aren't.
We all know the history and but doesn't mean we just say everyone in that country is bad.
The same thing here. They are bad, we get that. But you don't need to make their troops all snobby incompetent arses.
This is where Valkyria chronicles succeeded. The Imperial Alliance did some bad things and have reasons that can't justify it. That's how we know they are bad. But their commanders aren't your typical pure evil villain that does it for lulz.
Some are but most are not.

That makes the series stand out more. Both follow a very similar premise. The difference is how it is executed. One is a simple black-and-white which can still be good. But the other takes a step further.
And even for one-time villains, changing their personality can make a huge difference. it is the little things that matter.
You combine the little things and it can make or break the series. It is like camera angles. Why certain fights are less intense than others even with the same budget.

Izetta is one man army lol no need for other soldiers just send her.... Nice episode
Everyone speaking about how she is op maybe there will be a downside or a limit to her power, last fight she lost it in the middle of the battle, the enemy captured her befour so they may do it again.

And what fanservice!!! They are not showing her panty to be a fan service.

Pros:
Music was on point
Drama and Realism was great
Action was amazing

Cons:
Izetta fanservice (seriously, the amount of ass shots in this episode was just blatantly unnecessary)

Oh man, I loved this episode! First the harsh reality of war, death, hopelessness and then Izetta comes and BAAAMMM! Her battle against the German... nians was epic! I liked how she wasn't slaughtering the enemy unnecessarily. She could have killed all the footsoldiers with those swords, but she focused on the tanks instead, disabling them.

Also...

YURI! Damn, the way Fine embraces Izetta screams "I LOVE YOU, PLEASE STAY BY MY SIDE FOREVER". I hope Izetta realizes her true feelings too and gets rid of the her low self-esteem. Please make it happen soon, pleeeaaaseee!

Ah I see what you mean. I probably should have referenced that when I mean to say that Germania is the bad guys it's in reference to the countries political leadership and not necessarily to the average civilian or soldier. But I disagree in that I don't think the show has portrayed all their troops as snobby incompetent arses, the discourse between fatso and the air commander is definitely portrays them as snobbish but not incompetent.

It does seem that seem that the Germanian commanders we've met so far 'Gold lugar guy, fatso, air commander etc' come off as stereotypical tropey but I believe this is merely because their a one episode deal and we won't see them again. Germanians such as the pilot that survived the encounter with Izetta is one such character that doesn't really follow the same character type and im sure we'll see more of him in the future that doesn't seemingly present him in a way that's black and white.

Yuri goggles on.

Izetta sees Fine be really sad about not being able to save the soldiers. So she goes to fight the Germans for Fine's sake, even though Fine told her not to do it.

When Izetta returns, it seems like, more than because they won, Fine is happy that Izetta is safe.

And of course, a hug is a hug.

Eh, I don't know. I'll admit Izetta looked pretty badass. I don't know what was the point of the fan service when they were attempting to show how gruesome the war is, made it feel kind of ridiculous.

I'm not a fan of Izetta being a trump card when everything doesn't go well. I was hopping for a stronger overall narrative, but I can't take this story seriously. I guess I'll stick around for the pretty colors...

I did like some of the first half though, it was fairly typical. I mean I would've cared more if I already hadn't predicted that Izetta would OP the fuck out of everyone later on when everything got bad.

I thought this was very well done. The bloodshed and massacre was great. Having that one random soldier showing death flags all over the place. Fine and the soldiers that are with her are in despair as Izetta watches on, wanting to do something.

Izetta finally decided to take matters into her own hands.

And it was glorious.

Though I agree with the tank flipping being an eye roll and the fight animation isn't the greatest, it was still great to watch. This is how you want good vs evil to go down. Good is being pummeled by Evil until someone changes the tide of war with Good overcoming an uphill battle.

In terms of simple story telling, this episode did it right. Fine's soldier is getting dominated through out the episode, building up to us wondering if Izetta will attack or not. When hope is at an all time low, Izetta makes the save in the final moments of the episode. Though it's nothing that will stand out in the minds of everyone, it does set the mood for the rest of the series for the soldiers and adds more storylines.

Will Fine put faith in Izetta and have her fight? Or will she refuse to put her good friend in the line of fire? How will she feel if Izetta does fight for her?
Will Izetta survive in a full scale war?
How will the Germanians counter Izetta? It's possible since they had her in their grasps before.

4/5- Simple storytelling that delivered in spades. Izetta is so fucking adorable. Though I wish the fight animation was more vibrant coming from a witch. It could be the setting since it's day time so I'm hoping in a battle at night will make her abilities look more colorful and beautiful.

It was so great to see Izetta in action, she is so badass and cute at the same time :3
But it's also sad to see the war happening and watching the soldiers without hope, just dying to win some time... :( But it's the sad reality of war.
I put high hopes in this anime, hope it will be as great as this episode was.

This was a really good episode, but I feel like this anime shot itself in the foot. Izetta is just too powerful. Nothing on the battlefield could come close to hurting her. I thought the tanks would prove a challenge and she would have to get inventive and use the help of the regular soldiers, but she could throw them around like rag-dolls so it didn't matter. This becomes a problem because the story has left itself no more room to grow as things stand now. No battle will be able to match how tense this one was in the beginning, because we know Izetta can single handedly defeat the Germanians. The only way there will be any tension in the future is if the bad guys find a way to counter a witch.

I also found it jarring to see such effort to show the military equipment and tactics as historically accurately as possible, but then to show the Germanian officers as lazy and far from the battle. The German military was great because the had a great officer corps that could use their equipment to achieve the best possible effects. German Commanders were close to the front so they could make critical decisions to maintain the tempo. Blitzkrieg worked because the German military wouldn't stop once it made a breakthrough, and it requires generals near the battle to make the necessary decisions to keep the army moving forward.

the animation is pretty fluid tho, the appearance of Izzeta was so badass

I may understand the people who don't like this setting, they might be wanting a realistic war story... but they should already knew this was far from that by the very first lenght of the first episode tho

Good episode, though it makes me wish there was more historically accurate trench warfare type anime without any sort of magic. I know that's not what anime is for though, but it'd still be cool to see.

But the victory scene is just sick! (even if the German... is half-arsed.)

I wonder where they will take this.
Will they go far enough to induce reality that witch or something of the sort is usually got rid off by human governmental system once their usefulness runs out?

She's OP. 1 man army trope confirmed. Besides powerful telekinesis, it seems she's able to cast protective auras around the things and objects she enchants. Imbued bullets also seem very destructive (able to blow up a tank in 1 shot).

What I wonder is how long she can last while engaged in combat. In EP 1, it's shown she can run out of juice. Whatever that juice is, whether simple physical stamina and mental fatigue, or the more rudimentary "magical energy" (mana), is yet to be shown.

Evidently, she has enough power to not only wipe out a squadron of planes, but to also toss around freaking tanks like they were toys.

I think she's an asset best used as strategically as possible, because she would be overwhelmed if sent out alone. Send her in to throw the enemy ranks into chaos, while the main units back her up and kill off the confused soldiers.

Oh, pretty music too. This anime's gotten a whole lot more promising!

Honestly, I don't think you can really call Izetta "OP".
I mean, yeah she is, but they showed in the episode that she had to put quite a fight. She mostly used the advantage of surprise on the Germanian soldiers, and had to be very careful of her next move the whole time (you can see how she's looking everywhere to see what she could miss). She predicted the soldiers actions each time, and moved accordingly.

It's more of her using smartly her power and using the surprise than anything else, really.
And in the end she came back exhausted with tattered clothes. She only fought a dozen of Stukas and 16 tanks.
In facts she is probably way more dangerous to planes than to foot soldiers and tanks. Planes have no way to shot her down accurately given she is a very agile and small target, as fast as a fighter.

But imagine now what could happen if the soldiers were expecting her and had soldiers on the watch, or even worse : an AA gun ready to shot her down. They just have to bring a 88cm Flak and be ready.
In facts the best way to uses her power would be guerilla warfare tactics and ambush. She's clearly not suited for open field battles.

On the other hand, I found the war drama kinda overdone... but I loved how accurate the studio was in the tank, armament and Stukas modelling. Tanks are real panzers, Stukas are real Stukas, guns are WW2 guns, and the fact that Eylstadt is using FT-17 is really believable, given France sold them everywhere and most countries used them at the start of WW2.

Though I don't really see the Germanians as very evil in this episode. They are more like very confident generals, happily waiting for the victory against an annoying enemy. They appears as evil in our eyes because we see them driking Champagne while soldiers are fighting and dying. It's the contrast that brand them as evil in our eyes.

Have you served in the army before? Having served in the army, I really appreciated the first part. How the glasses mc fell asleep with the heavy helmet on his head. How the enemy advanced in squads of threes (with covering fire from a machine gunner squad). How the trenchlines were dug in a winding manner to route away bomb blasts.

As for the second part, Izetta is too OP. She needs some opposition else every battle will be one sided. Maybe the Germania officers will turn out to be vampires or something.

The war was pretty cool. The Elystadt forces were waiting for ground forces to come at them and then they get carpet bombed from the sky lol. And then the German tanks come and start nekoing them. A lot of lives are lost until the magical girl shows up and starts bringing down planes with lances and starts attacking tanks with swords lol. The swords just bounced back from the tanks and then she got pissed and flipped it over lol (at least it looked like that). The war was pretty cool before Izetta showed up to neko everyone. And she borrowed some random gun to ride it lol. The Germans were taking this so lightly that they had bets at whether the air attack will be enough or if tanks would be needed to kill them all. I liked how the soldiers with Finè wanted to do something and not sit around. And Finè was telling them that there's no point in going out and dying. And I liked how much everyone respects her.

Finally the kind of episode I've been waiting for since the first one. There's just one thing that bothers me a little bit. How come Izetta's mana drained really fast in the first couple of episodes and not in this one? Doing what she did requires a lot of power and mana, this doesn't make sense to me. This episode is our introduction to actual ground war eh

The calm before the storm is always hard
Alcohol always works right

Now that sergeant was wise
Too bad he didn't make it

Its nice that Fine is trying to stop Izetta from entering the war to
protect her from its horrors

But it looks like Izetta is dead set on entering it anyway

Love how the episode is showing how ground battles are being fought though

Buying time for the people with their lives
now thats bravery

If only they had more AT guns to knock those tanks out
then things will be less dire

Fine's speech to the soldiers was a good as ever
Reasoning and logic is her forte
And she is right in that sacrificing yourself now will not do anything
Its no wonder why she is so popular and beloved by her people

And wow Izetta's entrance into the battle was devastating for the germanians
Wow she alone wiped out those dive bombers before destroying the tanks
by flipping them

My Izetta can give life to inanimate objects like swords eh

Now with Izetta on the field halting and destroying the enemy and Fine
coordinating the soldiers actions
Thats the best paring ever

Its time to show the Germanians that they will have their way no longer

And thanks to all that fought and supported
They have managed to score the first victory against the Germanians

Damm that was a excellent episode
that had great animation, combat scenes and character development
It also introduced some good characters

The song in the end though
that was beautiful and haunting

Though i have a feeling that the king just died

I don't think her mana drains. I think her power is dependant on the location. She seems to take power from the land, and there are locations when there is more power than others. When she fought the fighter planes in episode 2 she said "I can fight here" and after crossing the mountain, she suddenly lost power. So it really seems it depends on the location.
