I think the art has been especially good recently, this always happens in bunches so I think we should appreciate it while we have it. And before getting into the more detailed parts of the episode, I’ll bring up the samurai because there isn’t much to add. Kin'emon and Kanjuro created a cat to climb the elephant and it was hit with the rain-ruption, but on that cat was the monkey who attacked them earlier! It seems they have become friends or at least made an agreement which I adore. Seeing the samurai boys alongside a monkey and a poorly drawn cat made for an interesting scene. I hope they end up having a bigger role this arc than they did in Dressrosa, and I presume that monkey will become a major player at some point down the line too.
We learned more about minks. Firstly, life at Zou is sustained through the rain-ruptions and a filtration system. The water flows and brings with it food. This happens often though and it makes Water 7’s aqua laguna’s yearly visit seem far more tame. Further, Mink’s actually seem to admire humans. This is not the same situation as with fishmen and their tension with humans. There will likely be exceptions, but the mink tribe holds the sentiment Luffy did against Arlong. As Luffy responded to the question of the difference between Arlong and him by stating: “Noses, chins, … oh the webs!” Wanda described the difference of minks and humans as nothing but a lack of the exterior. They are one in the same, they are both people. This goes so far that Carrot looked like was blushing a little just helping Luffy and, while also being due to saving the minks from how it seems, the other Straw Hats were treated as near royalty. If only Sanji was around, he’d be doing naughty things with many animal-girls. Beyond this in regards to Zou culture, we learned Bepo couldn’t leave the forest because, as a pirate, he is under “Master Cat Viper”’s care. Another named mink that I don’t think we’ve met yet.
Inside the flooded city was the first glimpse I had of the character interactions I adore and intrigue into a villain of this arc. Firstly, Robin imagining a cute elephant happily spreading water onto itself was a great look into her head. I love how cute post time skip Robin has been, with her drawings and more explicit looks into her mind. Then we had Usopp scoping out Luffy, only to misunderstand the scenario and think he was being eaten alive, which progressed the cannibal joke to a new level. Robin’s speculation now seeped into everyone’s head. Having moments later like Usopp hiding behind Zoro and trying to scare the minks away by roleplaying as him were phenomenal too. However, as suggested, as it cut to Luffy passing through the city we got a greater look into what happened before Luffy arrived. Those torture devices Zoro found, whether they were implanted by Jack’s men or not, were used on the minks while looking for someone but they refused to speak. Blood is still on the devices and it seemed horrific. We also got the characterization of Jack through Wanda. As much as he seems ruthless as all hell, torturing and causing so much destruction, he’s also insane, attacking Doflamingo’s transport which had Fujitora and Sengoku on it. He seems to be a guy that will do what he wants to do and no moral or logical implications would stop him. A real scary foe.
So yeah, it ended with Nami apologizing that they couldn’t keep Sanji safe. Without knowledge of Brook, Momonosuke or Caesar either, we have to wonder if they were abducted since obviously they couldn’t have been killed. It makes the start of this arc interesting as Sanji and the crew have already become saviors to Zou. The Straw Hats had their welcoming party akin to what we’d expect the finale of the arc to be, like with Fishman island. And it seems to be starting with the crew in danger, Luffy is probably going to have to commit some big feats and attack some big names. All that while building up Zou culture and giving us some great group interactions. Good stuff!!! |
