jirachi3x said: another amazing episode with two awesome insert songs. The interactions between haruhiro and Mary are flawless as usual. everyone is shipping haruhiro with someone but honestly i dont want to ship him because i dont know if this show is going to focus on romance and i wouldnt want to degrade the show with ship wars like in nisekoi, although that anime is still really funny.
But back to grimgar, i want to tell you my theory on why haruhiro chose the mine. Not sure if he chose it consciously or subconsciously but i think he actually wanted to help Mary move on. After getting close to her he really wanted to help her by killing death spots so he asked the party to go to the mine.
Also loved the insert at the begining where they showed how all the characters spend there day off. You see ranta having fun fishing. You get to see best girl Yume and her adventurous spirit while she is rock climbing.
And that scene with barbara with the insert song that reminds me of the nla theme in xenoblade chronicles x, that was funny. Haruhiro was just getting tortured. She was attacking him and sitting on him. This scene was also the only scene i can think that really implies a romantic direction in this anime. Also interesting to find out more about his new power. Still kinda mysterious.
Overall another fantastic episode of grimgar. It shows why it continues to be the best anime this season and a masterpiece.
11/10
In the Novel Mary actually brings it up, it helped seeing them overcome their issues with Manato's death.
Barbara!! My D-kun wants to be friends! I really want to be in Haru's place. All Dem poses she made :L
Sorry Yume, I love u so much (Kansai-ben girls are almost always my favs) but Mary's just rising up there. In terms of enjoying a character I enjoy seeing Yume more but In terms of character depth and shipping with Haru, Mary wins. Dat night scene was really nice.
LMAO they were saving the budget for Barbara scene!! i was wondering why the animation suddenly turned bad....LOL....the budget went to Barbara scene....XD
Great episode overall. it was a really enjoyable episode with enjoyable insert song, especially the first one :D i really like it a lot.
but this pic tho....
i knew it! i saw that coming! three episode left and all of that is about Marry's problems...i expected that :D
the monster turn into a whole new level....can't wait to see the action.
just can't get enough with Barbara-sensei XD
she is an "S" tho...

It's ok to have own opinion. But repeating it every week is silly. Especially that this is 9th episode, not 1st/2nd/3rd

Because when you have a nice fantasy world like this, you don't want to see how the characters clean their clothes, go for food shopping and talking about useless things for like 7 episodes.

A lot of things are and will be repeated a couple of times. Even positive comments. You made such a comment yourself: "Pacing is fuckin perfect!". You could also ignore such comments since they will always appear (even after the last episode). The comment you made on that particular person seemed a bit outraged and mean, but I get what you're trying to say.

On the novel by that point, even thought she warmed up to the party, she doesn't really shows as much emotion as she did this and end of last episode.

That depends on the person watching the show, really. However I do get what you're trying to say. The thing that is bugging me is the reference they had to "the actual world" by saying "mobile phone" and such modern words. Clearly the characters are from "our world", but none of the questions about how they got in Grimgar and why are answered. The pacing is something I have to deal with myself as well.. but it kind of feels dissapointing not knowing the "back story" of Grimgar and the characters.
So we go through another slow episode and we have 3 more before the series is over to complete a proper ending and all. Pretty sure they all going into the mines and becoming dead motherfuckers or the anime is gonna end with buy the manga TROLOLOLO and a rick rolled ending.
lol this show does know its 12 episodes right? anyway I always enjoy the animation, it's a beautiful show to look at but I cant help feeling this series is just one long advert for inevitable soundtrack album

Yep and it's even all the way until the end of of second volume. after that I don't expect changes either. This is simply the way her character develops.
Still it's better to not think of this anime as an adaptation as too many elements are simply changed, skipped. The anime producers sure are doing whatever they want. They main points that the story needs to include but they are taking different routes to approach it.
Also given the number of episodes left, I think they will probably rush to the ending of the second volume to tie up Mary's storline of her dead party. Skipping things like
the city battle part against orcs with Renji or introduction of who seems to be important character in the future Souma and his party
That's why it's better to think of this as an anime completely separated from LN and if someone wants to read LN they have to start from the very beginning. You have no idea how many steps were skipped. I mean how many chapters there are about only Haruhiro building him up as protagonist. Here we are given the set of six characters from the get go.
Even more chill episode than usual, but enjoyed it nonetheless. They've decided to go to the mines, this will be interesting seeing how they will all cope in this new environment and enemies.
Barbara return this episode... don't know if Haruhiro is lucky or not. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Is this a bad thing? Just think about all the rushed LNs adaptations.

I have no problem with slow shows, and some of my favorite slow shows get shit on for being slow as well. There are lots of reincarnation/sent to new world with RPG element shows and LNs out there and I was interested to see where one would go if it decided to go at a slow pace. Probably the biggest reason for it being slow was to make Manato's death more meaningful, because he dies fairly early on in the 1st book. So when this show stuffed in insert songs and long pauses between every sentence it felt like you could see the writers trying to find ways to draw it out as much as they could. Like with a lot of LN adaptations this one will end before any real goal or plot is established, and with some shows it works, but this one either needed more episodes or a faster pace.
This episode was okay. I liked the taking a break thing and the character interactions. But damn.. The character animation really bothered me this episode. I know it's not that important for an episode like this but it was so distracting.
"Things seem to be going well with Mary. I know! Let's fuck with her by suggesting to go back to the Cyrene mine, because that's the only other place we could go to since we need to change the areas we go to!"
Forced drama is forced. He admits that he knows she wouldn't feel comfortable and wouldn't operate at full capacity, but suggests it anyway?
Error 404 : logic not found.
It's an entirely different kind of flying, altogether! It's an entirely different kind of flying.
Ok I don't want people being like "O you dont like this show because you dont like the pacing much."
1 I do like the show in fact its one of my favorites and 2 it is a bit too slow at times.
I wrote a rant if you care, it contains information about what I think of everything so far but there is a summary at the end where I make my point this is just context.
That said every episode does have a singular purpose. Which is nice, but leaves me woried for the finale like it was said before. There are way too many questions left unaswered and I do get that the source material isn't finished yet but honestly Full Metal Alchemistgave it a shot (It kinda sucked but they tried.) do an original ending. If you dont plan on making more or have any idea if you are just give the people some closure that doesn't say "go read the source material now". I didn't watch Lord of the Rings and at the point Gandalf fell fighting the balrog in moria the movie just ended (Looking at you NoGameNoLife)
Anyway by now this is what happened:
Episode 1
Hey we are doing this!
Everyone is happy ? we see the Pink guy dont remember his name can't be bothered. Never see him again guess he wasn't important, or most of the other characters actualy that hat dude shows up some times in the bar.
Anyway story had an interesting concept I'm like lets see what happens from now on.
Episode 2
We got to kill stuff. (Great seeing them deal with their delilema there shame they threw that out the window imidiatly afterwards. I thought this might be an important part of the show but nope. If you just keep piling them up its fine. Lets just kill the straglers as they desperatly fight for their lives. I must say I have never seen a goblin do anything wrong just people going to their homes and MURDERING THEM.
That could have gone somewhere but I guess not.
Episode 3
They find where the goblins live and start training at murdering poor goblins. Show is preaty happy at this point, except for murdering poor goblins nothing much happens.
There is that thing where Manato buys the Magic Girl. Dont remember her name she basicly doesn't do anything anyway except for being sad this whole show as far as I can tell.
Episode 4 aka The Goblins Strike Back (Would be a nice name for episode 5 but I did it and I wont take it back)
They learn skills get cocky and BUM Manato is dead. And I must say I would have forgoten him if hey shut the hell up about him dieing for 5 minutes this episode was the high point for me I was like "O what will happen now" I mean I could take the 5 minutes of *Insert Music* in this episode he had just died, its ok be sad I thought it was well done.
Episode 5
Not much to say here everybody is sad they deal with it ok. Some interaction between the characters about the issue. It was actually very good take a break from everything deal with the situation it felt natural. Renji showed up did what he could to help I understand why they didn't accept it, he seems like a kewl guy, that we havent seen again.
Episode 6
Mary shows up and she doesnt talk to people and whatnot, understandable sure. But she is dull. Like seriously dull. She has been in multiple parties after the EVENT nobody ever gave a shit about the cleric. No mater that their lives depended on it. No just get a new one. Everyone in Grimgar is a douche but our main party who imidiatly care about her. Sure whatever.
Episode 7
The Mary thing continue they get a bit closer OK. They plan their attack on Goblin Man and palls in the background.
Episode 8
They have their big showdown incredibly nobody gets even majorly injured. Guess they were better than they though. Followed by 5 minutes of people crying over Manato again. I am going to assume at this point Months have passed like come on seriously? I mean they bringing him the tags was a nice touch but it using 5 minutes of the episode on that? Way too much. More taling to Mary.
Episode 9
Todays episode. What did Haru do on his day off other than taking to Mary? Honestly it feels all he ever does in talk to fucking Mary. WHY!? Also I kinda thought Ranta and Yume would talk a bit when Ranta saw her but I guess not Mary and Haru need more screen time. They havent taked for at least 30% of the time since she showed up. She doesn't talk to anyone else.
So 3 episodes left now.
We could have gotten this far with 5 episodes left, episode 2 and 3 can be only 1 episode, no point in having these 2 episodes apart. In fact they could probably be combined with episode 4 I think that would be a bit overkill though.
Episode 6 and 7... way too long there is not point in it being 2 episodes. Some stuff can be cut without anyone caring. Ranta is yealing at Mary in one scene. It did nothing. It was a pointless scene because everyone could tell that Ranta wouldn't deal with it and Mary wouldn't care. It was just dragged out.
Finally we got to episode 8 and I literaly finished watching and considered not watching episode 9. Honestly I am not sure I made the right decision doing it. Again this whole episode was about Mary. Our characters are secondary by now. Haru is basicly a blank slate, so blank he doesnt even do anything on his day off but talk to Mary. I am realy realy realy sick of Mary at this point. Not realy happy about Haru honestly his would work better if we werent locked to Haru all the time and we could see other charcters interact without Haru there.
I am preaty sure Ranta and Mogzo haven't talked a single time one on one. In fact this brings me to another point. Most characters in this show are severely underdeveloped and they are trying to focus on character development?
My opinion of the characters:
Haru is a standard hero character that got the burdon of leading the party. Which we see him do like once and not even particularly well. Mary would do a better job as she is in a better position in combat even to lead the team.
Manato is a dude that is dead and everybody keeps talking about him all the fucking time out of him being the only one who gave a little bit of a shit about them. He was a terrible cleric and a terrible party leader which got him killed.
Mogzo the cook warrior whose only personality traits is being calm at home and scuplting and stuff and saying "Domo" when he slashes people. I want to know more about him but I dont think that's happening is it?
Ranta is a guy who is always on edge that obviously has something more to his character deeper down that will never be explored because no one gives a shit about the guy.
Shihoru who is a mage who is shy and cries and comepletly relies on Yume emotional as a cluch that she obviously needs because a guy who she kewn for like 2 months and she liked died and she cannot get over it.
Yume is best combat budies with Haru I think. I tought they would have a little thing but Mary showed up and cockblocked her. They work well as a duo and she bring the much needed light heartedness to the show from time to time.
And Mary the cleric who lost her party cause she was only slighly better at healing than Manato and wasn't so stupid that she ran in a straight line though a street with buildings everywhere when a guy with a crossbow was shooting at him. She deals with stuff and her character actualy evolves significantly unlike any of the other ones.
Now the ones that we know nothing about.
Renji the Cool dude who we only see twice. He seems cool, smart and skilled. Unlike our heroes here but that is the point so Ill let it pass.
And
Brittany who we see in episode 1 and despite being obviously necessary for various parts of their job we never see again. Brittany looked interesting at least when they bought their tags we could have a scene with brittany but no.
TL;DR
This show almost ended and we dont know:
>The magic glow that Haru sees. We have no idea what it is but maybe we will know about it.
>Where they came from which looked like the main story but no one cares in fact if anything it makes the story worse as the characters have 0 past to deal with or discover we have no idea why Ranta is the way he is or Mogzo is so good at cooking.
>Why are even the other characters there in episode 1 if we were never going to see them again.
>Anything about Grimgar. At all. We have characters which despite some of them being interesting live in "Generic Fantasy World 1564" which happens to have a terrible system of dealing with border threats I might add.
>Why in hell do they have to be volunteer soldiers is there literaly nothing else? Being a baker for Mogzo, mage girl could work at a restaurant or as a maid, Manato could be a healer or learn to make medicine, Ranta could work at the market or something with Haru and I dont know what Yume would do. And just make a show about them living there.
We might even know more about this before the end but lets be honest we wont. They will fight the Death Spot kobold or what not and it will end.
This whole story is about Mary. No one else matters. Manato's death was just a plot point to make our characters care about Mary. Haru is just the voice that Mary hears so she can start to move on. This show to me feels less and less about the team as it was in the start but about Mary.
Lots of people like Mary but Mary is seriously ruining the show for me. And since the next arc is again only about Mary I dont see me being happy with how this all ends. I realy like this show untill episode 8 even if 6 and 7 were not my favorite. But now... I dont see me enjoying the rest.

Yeah pretty much.
But hey, it's pretty much working out for them. People seem to love the music.
Fappa said: This week’s episode is tricky as it depends on what type of consumer you are. As an anime only watcher you’ll like it for what it showed you but as a light novel reader you might have your problems.
So what did the anime adaptation differently? First of all they cut some content, in fact the very first chapter. It’s nothing majorly important but it would have given a nice touch.
So what happens in the first chapter is an invasion. Yeah the town our characters live in gets invaded by Orcs. Panic breaks out, our characters get parted from each other in the commotion and Haruhiro has to face an Orc by himself just to find out that he doesn’t stand a single chance. He tries to flee and runs into the group of Renji which quickly disposes of the Orc by decapitating it. After that we see some badass fight scenes from Renji’s party as well as a duel between him and the Orc’s leader ( who even speaks human language ). This experience is what gives Haruhiro his motivation to keep on going and to not get left behind. You could say because of that all of them evolve some sense of competition. It’s not only about surviving anymore but making yourself a name, improve, raise your living standard.
So you see it’s nothing really important. That’s also why I think it got cut out but it would have been nice to see, I have to admit that. What I like though is how they didn’t just blandly cut it out and leave it like that, no, they replaced it with another anime original scene between Mary and Haru which I can only love to death. They really try to pay focus on the character interactions with this adaptation whether it’s within discretion of the author or not, I don’t know but it’s definitely not a bad decision. Personally I thought they would bait us all with the misleading episode title and preview scenes just to surprise us all with the sudden orc invasion, guess I was completely wrong lol.
They also altered the order in which they acquire their new skills. In the source material our groups went to training after they’ve visited the Siren Mines for the first time, the anime on the other side puts this progress between the battle against the Goblin group and their first visit of the mines. I think that’s actually a good move because it shows you that they now have surpassed the Goblins as enemies once and for all. They’ve advanced to a new height and prepare themselves accordingly to it, I mean there’s nothing wrong with getting some new skills before advancing to a new environment with new enemies.
So all in all I’m a little bit sad that they cut out this awesome chapter but happy with how they managed to make up for it. Before some people come to the conclusion that the anime now goes for an original ending for this season or even a whole story line, that’s not the case at all. We are far far faaar away from being anime original. The anime still follows the LN perfectly, it only cuts out content that doesn’t has any really important meaning and even that happens very rarely.
interesting info you got there, now that you said that i REALLY wish they had added this fight.
Definitely felt a little more slower pace than usual but it was to be expected with this being the start of a new arc and overall it still was a good relaxing episode seeing everyone do their own thing on their day off and omg the Haru x Mary moments were so cute to see! Shipping them so hard now but yea this next arc as Haruhiro says is that they will be going to that mine that Mary lost her friends which I was just thinking really Haruhiro you going to suggest that knowing how she feels about that even if she ends up wanting to so she can overcome it, just bring that up was really stupid in my opinion. The part with Barbara was interesting to say the least with her all over his D...lol but yea overall nice relaxing episode that is a good start for this next arc and I cannot wait to see how Mary will overcome this.
If you want to see my full review on the episode check out the link to my YouTube channel on my profile page where I make review videos on the current anime!
I really like the slow pacing as it is. While it was a breather episode, it also allowed us to see how the girls have changed in a positive way, especially Mary and Shihoru.
And for once, Ranta was not a total douche. The training session was a bonus too.
But the highlight of the episode is gotta be Mary. She in her casual clothing is so damn beautiful. I think she became my second favourite of all the female characters in Winter 2015 when they showed her sitting next to a window looking afar in a previous scene. I still cannot forget that scene.
Stay Home and Wash Your Hands.
Protect Yourself. Protect Your Loved Ones.
Protect Your Community and Help Defeat Coronavirus.
This doesn't seem to be a hugely popular opinion but I think the pacing for this series is perfect and this episode was no different.
It's hard for me to pick a favorite of the season..... This, erased, and Konosuba are to me clearly the 3 best of the season but I can't pick which I like the best!
Haru x Mary ship is sailing strong recently~ Yes! I really don't like this anime until Mary comes and make things more interesting.
Found this on reddit. Even the anteater makes a love sign~ (yes I know it's kind of a stretch)
So far Mary have proper build up, but the rest of the characters are like background characters. I hope they address those characters within the last 3 episodes. Or they could add more Mary x Haru, which is not a problem at all to me.
I'm still curious on why Mary called Haru as "Haru" without the suffix like Haru-kun or Haruhiro as the others called him. I think Mary knows Haru in real life before they got to this world, which is why they're so close.
You know while I don't need action to satisfy my needs it would help if we had some world building like whats Renjis group up to or the current state of the town. Or what kind of other classes exist in this world
Montages! Random insert songs! Yume's ass! Manato mention!
Well it's still enjoyable. But stop with the insert song ==' I think a soothing relaxing instrumental insert song would go better than an Engrish song.
Also Mary x Haru ship is getting more confirmed. Especially since they changed the ED on ep 7 with Haru and Mary together. S.S. Yumetanic have hit a Maryberg!

Its been repeated week after week why the insert songs are there, blame the publisher (TOHO) for forcing in their brand at least A-I handled them as best they could, but can we please just let this go.
took under 10 mins for them to add a random song in, shuld play a drinking game with this

LOL. You can have a good gauge of a person's maturity level based on the posts here. Most who complain seem to want One Punch Man in plate armor SMH
IMO, this anime is very well done, and IDK why some are so fixated on it being just 12 episodes, when it's pretty obvious that they intend to have more after (granted the anime has to be received and sell well first), even if the manga doesn't go that far. It's not the first time an anime is uprooted from a manga to take off on its own.
The anime did step a bit away from the manga, but it's a refreshing take on the whole fantasy genre that's frankly been looking like one is the clone of another, starting from SAO. While all those stand on their own merits, and I did like most of them, when you watch each in succession over the span we had for the past 2-3 years, they all feel somewhat the same, mostly heroes with mid to high level power just going through motions from one fight to another.
No one really tackled the travails of low-level characters and their mundane lives, and I personally was thinking about it when, lo and behold, Grimgar came around. It's been great. The nuances and world-building alone is a treat, and it's easy to see this can be taken far. I play tabletop RPGs and the storyline of the lives of these characters showcase the real fun of role-playing, which is character development, and not super powers and taking down the Demon King after episode 5.
Edit: Oh yeah, I forgot to mention, like I always mention to people, Japanese make their stuff primarily for the consumption of the Japanese audience. After that, they target the Korean and Chinese markets. It rarely goes beyond that, even if it's the United States, since the cultural differences open up works to criticism without context. Case in point: you don't see many works such as Grimgar make it into Adult Swim NA, where action anime dominate their lineup. Why bother, when you won't make back the costs of localizing your content?
We're lucky that their art forms are of such a high level, in this case, entertainment-wise, that people put in the effort to translate works for the rest of the world to enjoy.
But the point is, it's unlikely the disapproval and disappointment uttered on this thread and everywhere else not in Japan matter to the creators, not when you people aren't even part of the intended audience in the first place. I appreciate the fact that I'm someone on the outside looking in, and am grateful for the experiences I would otherwise miss, had there been no avid translators doing what they do.
