I rate series after the first episode and you can't do nothing about it. If its turning good then the rating will raise and vice versa, there is no reason why you can't rate after the first episode. You can hold your rating all you want but saying that people who rate early is stupid is retarded.

Ratings can change, what a concept!@!*(^

I rate after the first episode because it captures my first impression, which is reflected in a drop after several episodes or a complete and final score. haters gonna hate

As for the episode, I like explanations, it helps me get into the story and connect the dots of what happens in the Anime (ala Heavy Object). BY the time the episode ended, i was thinking "wtf did I just watch?". Who are these people, what are they doing and why, and what is the lore behind the crystals or whatever the hell they are and everything else that is going on.. ill keep watching since its only the first episode, but would really like to know wtf is going on...

I really don't get this sort of animosity towards people who rate based on 1 episode. I mean, what's the problem?

I rate a show based on what I have seen, I check the rating I gave it after every single episode. Is it consistent, is it getting better or worse?

I rarely drop anything so it's not like I'm being unfair. When I drop something after a first episode because it's just not my cup of tea, I don't even add it to my list because I don't feel I can rate it properly. But, a first impression IS an opinion, and an opinion can be expressed with a rating.

I'm curious how this became lower rated than for example Asterisk and Cavalry after the first episode aired, what do you think?

7="good" in general is nice for an original, with no major hype (kyoani, nasu, uro etc).
Guy mysteriously gets crystal, girl & mech, no questions asked. It's trite mech tropes. Show feels like fast paced comedy/sol action, & 12 episodes to rush thru, so I wasn't bothered much. Yes Asterisk/Cavalry have a larger truckload of cliches (only ep1), but both are adaptations with hype from LN fans. Adaptations of good sources tend to start higher rated, nothing unusual.

I don't rate early on. It's fine to rate whatever. But if a good show had a rough misunderstood start, people who use rating thresholds for choosing new shows would filter this out. A bit unfortunate to miss out, but just learn to trust your own preference instead of public opinion.

Is poll#3 "I got no patience, gotta drop in first 5 minutes", or "dislike cliffhangers"?

Poll#2: Almost every thread on mech shows, there are comments like "I don't watch/like mechs... but I might try 3 episodes... / instant drop". Especially when a mech appears, and MAL hasn't added the Mech genre (like Lucifer), people feel tricked.
Even if it's already Mech labeled, and those Heavy Objects (ball fortresses) are hardly mechs, there's anti-mech as much as anti-BL comments in other shows. Probably certain genres/tags just have more trope baggage that rubs them the wrong way.

I usually don't rate until the 5th ep, but it's kinda sad to see such a low score for such a promising series. This is my biggest hope in this kinda harem-heavy season

That's pretty much true. The typical pattern in the first week of any new season is that the sequels are the highest-rated shows, the next-highest are the LN/VN/manga adaptations that some people have already read, below that are the original shows and franchises that are totally unknown to westerners, and at the bottom are the shorts and the kids shows. Fortunately, it does start shaking itself out over the course of the season, with the cream tending to rise to the top.

As for Lucifer itself, I liked the first episode a lot, but I totally get why some people were turned off by it. There were a ton of things going on, a lot of unanswered questions, and no clear sense of how the three initial plot threads (the mysterious stone, the betrothal, and whoever's operating those mining mechs) are all supposed to fit together yet. I had to watch it twice to start untangling some of that stuff.

Falling down is winning the poll? Something so common in fantasy fiction irks so many people here? REALLY?
I guess MFK is completely right. This or autism.

My opinion on other anwers: (1 skipped because 0 votes)
2. I hate that there is so many people that hate all mecha because they were disappointed with recent popular and completely disappointing in the end series like Valvrave or A/zzz.
3. Nothing is original. Embrace clichés or stop watching anime.
4. Many people here lack attention span and need constant stimulation with "epik plotwists" and "habbening".
5. This actually isn't fitting to MAL since most of people know overall shit about people in industry. They mostly consider animation studio as most important, this explains huge boner on Madhouse productions and both huge popularity and hate towards Kyoani. On the other hand Rokka no Yuusha had shitty studio Passione and still menaged to be good in the end and it was very popular here during airing.

I'm gonna try to list some pros and cons so far in the first episode:

Pros:
• No lazy infodumping. We learn about the world/city and how people live in through a simple scene where the protagonist goes around on his "Quicker Board".
• Same goes for the current antagonists. We're learning about them through their actions instead of 5 minute dialogues about what their goals are.

Cons:
• The characters have no will and stuff happens because the plot said so.
1. A crystal falls from the sky directly on the protagonists' palm and he just goes back without questioning it.
2. While riding his board thingy he suddenly gets catapulted because that's what the crystal wanted and he just had to land on his friend.
3. Some pipe explodes and they fall into a cave right next to where some mecha spawning chick lies that the antagonists are searching for.
• We know little to nothing about the characters. Proper introduction is needed or otherwise it's hard to like a show.

Also let's not forget that the soldier just decided to charge at them instead of questioning what they're doing there or ask them to hand over the girl.

While your points are definitely not wrong, I will go over my thoughts on them. As for the characters having no will, I disagree on that. They all have some pretty obvious personality, and while they are going with the flow, I think that seems pretty normal given the everyday life we saw prior to the plot devices, they seems to be pretty carefree and live happy lives. The main character is also all doing this because it has clues that lead up to what his mother said before that he mentioned, thus giving him motive.

1. Given all the talk about the heavens, and her feathers, she obviously came down from there, as for why, probably escaping it because she looked at humans from below and heaven is probably a messed up place, thats why moura went with her to protect her, and I'm looking forward to seeing into how this progresses into a battle vs the heavens.

2. Given how the crystal is from the heavens, it is safe to assume it had some will and foresight, and perhaps did all that specifically to bring him to her, granted this could just be plot bs, it's completely plausible and we can't call it bull till we find out more.

3. The pipe didn't explode, I think it was just routinely letting out steam? We do have some introductions about the characters, primarily that the main characters mother is a researcher that seems to have either died or gone missing

There is the marriage relationship for the prosperity of their families, which means they are rather high up in this world and have a fair amount of power. I imagine we'll get a lot more detail given the studios approach to pacing and story telling, we are only two episodes in after all.

Personally I loved both the two episodes and I can't wait to see how this anime progresses, because I honestly have no idea what path they can do or how the characters will move on from here, and how active a role the heavens will play in this

My points are only regarding the first episode while most of the stuff that you've mentioned seems to be from the second one which I didn't bother to watch yet.

Also it doesn't make a good impression from the characters if everything that happens in the episode is because the plot said so and not because the characters wanted to do it. Furthermore there is no "flow" whatsoever because the events are random as fuck and the characters are forced to just deal with it.

I don't rate series at all. It's a useless thing to do. If you want to express your opinion,do so with words, not an arbitrary number.

In this site often votes are given before the first episode ... that says a lot on the final value of that.

The Real reason is because this is an original series with no content known ahead....the ratings are higher from the other series cause a percentage of those viewers already know what to expect from the anime so they have basis how good it will be...but this does not...

if u look at the score between original series and adaptions airing in the fall u can see a lot of them are in the lower ranks for now...give it some more time to develop into the better bits and i will guarantee this will get better reception later.

This poll assumes the anime is good, though.

Nope. This anime is 12 eps long, so 3 eps is enough to exceed 1/5 of the anime (it's 1/4 of it, actually).

Because people don't Sentai or original anime on this site for whatever asinine reason, when compared to ln/Manga adaptations. Isn't everything over an 8 also a sequel to, with the next original anime to come close to an 8 is Gundam, an established franchise.
