Rest assured people .. The ending dude was Thoma << still insist they ended up together lmao sorry a bit obsessed <3

It could be that both souls went to his body << yeah right
Or as someone here said that he simply didnt forget

And
1 - we never saw Thoma's arm in the anime he always wore long
2 - Soran looked EXACTLY like Thoma when he was young , and the guy Helga met in the end is Exactly like Soran + the fact that its the same skin and eyes and hair color as Thoma I mean come on isnt there any other face characteristics other than those in the anime ? Nope
3 - Thoma never appeared as a grown up , he is as important as Helga if not more so he would have appeared for sure , so judging from all aspects , it is Thoma.

And even if its not we would all love it to be like that << dont decide on their behalf ...

This series captivated from the get go with it's intriguing mystery that slowly unfolded. Moreover, I'm also surprised how well the tone shift was handled once the biggest question got answered.

And the finale was simply spectacular and bittersweet.

I also think/hope that the guy at the end was indeed Thoma.

Great watch overall

Easy 8 maybe even 8,5/10

Well, to be fair, I'm not sure how I feel about the ending. Overall, I must say that Fantastic Children is indeed a hidden gem. Had me hooked since episode one, as it touched quite a few amusing topics. The setting was dreamy as well as mysterious and that was just what I was looking for.

The first half definitely dragged on longer than I wanted but overall the whole story was quite interesting.

I've just finished re-watching the entire series after many many years, and I've got mixed feelings to be honest. My young, naive and inexperienced self had rated it a solid 9 back then, but now I'm more hesitating between 7 and 9. The series started off great, full of intrigue with a compelling narrative. Then alas it started going downhill a few episodes into the second half. Aliens? Sure, why not. Then comes the Greecia arc. Giant aliens with vastly superior technology allowing for intergalactic travel and playing God, yet fighting with swords? Freaking swords vs guns?? WTF, did not compute. Also bearing a strikingly similar culture to Earthlings; weren't the two planets supposed to be far apart by some 200 000 light years, in separate galaxies? And some truly petty drama to boost, you would expect such an advanced civilization to have at least reached some level of wisdom. Besides, if the series made an actual effort to stay true to its whole scientific premise, Greecia and its inhabitants would have likely been biologically, and most of all CULTURALLY very different from Earth, on top of being simply gigantic human rip-offs which I found to be a really lazy move from the writers to come up with an "exotic" life form for the sake of it. But hey, it's anime! We wouldn't want our viewers to think a bit too hard, would we? I guess it played safe towards its target demography, i.e. teenagers most likely.

Don't get me wrong, as stated above I loved the first half of the story. But the second half and the (fairly rushed) ending kind of all threw all of that away into the dumpster. So much wasted potential here, it could have been a fantastic tale of reincarnation, spirituality, philosophy and science-fiction if it really wanted to be, in the same vein as Shinsekai Yori for instance. And don't even get me started on some of the characters. So much cringe.

I'm dropping my rating from 9 to 8 for these reasons. And that's being generous, as MAL does not allow for 7.5 which would be more appropriate in my book. 9 for the first half, 6-7 from the revelations till the end. OP/ED were great, especially the ending by Origa (RIP) showing the paintings, my favorite one being Seraphine's. It would make for a wonderful piece of art in real life!

It's not unusual for sci-fi series back then (Or even now) to a have a mix of alien technology and medieval stuff - Legend of Galactic Heroes' characters at one point use axes lol. Terra E features characters having psychic powers, but they still fight with swords at one point! This is actually not even unique to anime - I can think of several sci-fi videogames were the characters employ outdated technology to fight.

I actually struggle to think of a sci-fi series were the characters don't engage is some outdate nonsense or the aliens are actually truly /alien/. (I wouldn't be surprised if the giants were meant to be a reference to macros anyway)

especially the ending by Origa (RIP) showing the paintings, my favorite one being Seraphine's. It would make for a wonderful piece of art in real life!

Loooved those paintings, I had one as my desktop/phone wallpaper for a long time. They are incredibly visually striking.

They lost their memories of their former selves(Seth/Tina) not of their current selves which know each other. Besides even if they did, Chitto never lost any memories and probably would have kept them connected in some way, they wouldn't be complete strangers like they were in the end.

Awesome anime even though this was not my ideal ending, I am still giving it a 9/10.

I would have preferred an ending where Helga built a life with Thoma after forgetting their memories.
Seth truly was in love with Tina much more than Soran, he was willing to sacrifice his love.
I do like Soran but unfortunately, he was not really present in the anime and I feel like he was more of a supporting character. So I really could not bond with him and always felt myself supporting Seth, even during the destruction of their home planet Greecia.

Finally, after 10 years I would have wanted to know what happened to Chitto, grown-up Soran, Gherta, and the rest. of the children. I definitely feel like an extra episode was needed.
All in all, I am happy to have watched this anime a true hidden gem.

No ending for Gherta/Mel :( She just died a lone scientist woman I guess. Honestly, I imagined a more tragic ending for the series overall. Just was having that kind of mood. Oh well, Dumas decided to kill himself or something? Stopping his heart forever. And Tina in the garden...I didn't see any preserving liquid, will she just rot? :0 And he got the scientists' bodies just in case. They decided against living on their planet just for 2 months though.

I have mixed feelings after watching this. Really liked the mystery in the first half and the revelations in the second half. I didn't really like most of the characters though. Thoma was a fine character overall (though his outbursts were rather childish imo), but Dumas was always bitter and arrogant, Helga was passive and boring, Soran was hard to empathize with since we don't get to know him well and the children were looking angry over and over again for no reason. Still, the story felt unique and made me want to continue watching, it's just that I feel some potential to make it better was wasted.

Finished rewatching this, probably 14 years since the first time, and it was still as awesome as ever. I can admit that the 2nd half isn't quite as good as the 1st since all the big mysteries are gone, but I enjoyed it just as much. And even though I already remembered the major twists and plot points, those scenes still had a lot of emotional impact (especially Tina's and Seth's memories/awakenings).

I feel Detective Cooks should've had a little more resolution, he did all that chasing around and only got confirmation that the kids were indeed the same in his grandfather's photo. It doesn't seem like he ever learned their true nature/mission, and he probably didn't even get credit for finding them since they all went back home on their own in the extra ending. I could've sworn he and Alice had hooked up in the end but I guess that was my imagination fooling me all this time.

This is still up there as one of my all-time fave series and maybe in another 12 years I'll watch it again. 10/10

Seems most people are in agreement about the first half being superior with all the mystery elements involved, which then spirals into more of a character drama. Still a great watch with a very emotional and memorable soundtrack. 8/10.

This was pretty good anime.
Only thing, since I'm stubborn, a sucker for romance, i would be much happier to see Soran and Tina fighting for their reunion and love, not that much of his best friend's regrets. For that to happen i would put Soran's soul into Thoma and Seth's soul into Chitto.

That said but i pretty much enjoyed every second

go watch Sailor Moon if you want a by the numbers reincarnation romance. I applaud how subversive this anime attempted to be.
