Better than Mahoutsukai no Yome, would say. I can already feel more action/life and emotions on the screen.

So, I didn't quite understand something: Violet is a human that only lost her arms or she's been a robot/doll all the time?
Generally I'm not fond of the idea of a robot trying to figure out love, less feel it. It's such a fake feeling to me. I've seen decent amount of stories of that type that no matter how much they tried they could never convince in that. Machines can never reach that level of a human, what makes him as such, with all the qualities that define him. If Violet's primarily been a human then I could handle this story positively, if it's the latter then I'm not sure.
Would stay a bit longer to see whether the series would manage to change a little bit of my attitude.

However, quite a solid first episode. Not very much to like for a start, but nothing really to hate about. It's in the middle, it's just ok.

Bit of a slow start and while the animation was good I wasn't blown away as I was expecting.

I was hoping it will be about Postgirl: the anime because it's an unique thing. But we get The letter writing job instead. Both are unique either way.
Dear God they overused the Bloom. Really love the Linearts done the the characters and the color scheme. Let's hope the story is good, animation and pretty pictures can't carry the show alone.

So i tried to go in without any hype but i was kind of left unimpressed with anything.

It was definitely good but nothing amazing, even with the animation quality. There's some weird filtering going on that really looks bad.

Characters are okay.

Really have to say that the first episode was indeed worth watching. I have been hyped for this since the moment I came to know about it. I also read the first chapter of the novel and it was really Interesting.
It's sad to know that such a young lady has spent her entire life in the army. But it also saves the fact that she has been protected by some good as Gilbert. The President looks like a fine man. It's hard to believe that he is Colonel.
I am really happy that Violet got her surname from the Evergarden family. She got herself gloves that really suits her along with a family that can take care of her. The job she took that is to Write Letters for people is an incredible idea. I never thought that something was like this. It really brought joy to my heart.

The thing I didn't understand was the hand. Was it a robotic arm or something else? I doubt there was something like that at that time. But it's a story after all and I don't have any doubts.
Hyped for looking for more Violet Evergarden-chan's moments.

I didn't expect it to be this great!!! The art is undoubtedly beautiful, but the music is even more beautiful and really fit with each scene. Hope that they will keep going with this marvellous quality till the end.

The animations were amazing just as expected from the previews etc. :D
OST ist pretty nice as well, i think this was a good first episode and i can't wait to see more of it!

What exactly happened so that she lost both of her arms? and how can the technology be so advanced that she has those robotics, but the normal world technology seems not ahead of time? (pls no spoiler, just what popped up in my mind while watching)

btw i think it's sad that animes that haven't even started to air, are so overhyped. that's why people always say 'not what i expected because of the hype' when it finally starts -.-

If the series will end up as good the art, this will easily be a 11/10. But even though the art was astounding, the episode itself was like a 5- or 6/10 so it didn't hold up as well. I will continue watching and hope it will be better but I generally don't hold love for Kyoani shows (Maid dragon is nice though) I'm not too overhyped about the series.

Seems pretty promising so far, but it's definitely hard to judge when the whole episode was essentially set-up. There's definitely some very interesting potential here, so I'm gonna stick with it and see where it goes: if this episode is any indication, this could be really good.

wow!! the animation was superb. this show should be watched in nothing less than 720p(that's the highest quality i'm able to watch without buffering XD) and also is there a 1080p version of this series or 720p is the highest they've got?

a nice opening for the series.hope it keeps on becoming better.

Beautiful first episode. I think they did a decent job on Violet's characterization and laid the foundation for her development. In that sense, a good setup episode.

Really curious to see how KyoAni will handle this. Hoping for something great, because I absolutely loved the novel.

Also, the music is top-notch.

Great start.

The visuals certainly look fantastic but there's quite a huge amount of blur effects that I didn't expect. It's certainly not distracting but it's very noticeable. Not entirely sure why they thought they needed this much Depth of Field to draw focus but I'm cool with it.

The characters are quite likable and Violet is so pretty. It does seem to look like Violet is human and not an android or something as I seem to have thought. However, if that's true then the scene with Hodgins looking at Violet from what seemed to be some kind of gallery seems off somehow. Anyway, I'm looking forward to knowing more about Violet and Gilbert's past.

I really liked that one shot from inside the street lamp with the flames covering half the screen while Hodgins was telling Velvet about the burns in her heart. That was a really nice touch.

From what I took away from the second half and the end of this episode, if this story is gonna be about Violet discovering love and all the other little things that make life beautiful then I'm gonna like this a lot.

Lots of blur/filer effects, doesn't harm the experience too much but yeah it's noticeable indeed. Think it's obvious how the story will revolve around Violet experiencing and developing emotions for herself, but hope I am not too bored with the SOL setting. Overall good start, hope Kyoani doesn't disappoint me like its last few series.

Don't know if it's overhyped or not, but for the start it is pretty good. Obv beatiful what you expect from KyoAni, liked the music, not much for the story cause it's only the beginning but definitely interesting. Kinda strange that people just with 1 episode writing it off, well if you don't like it you simply don't ... Was waiting for quite some time to watch and for the opening it was very good!

Outstanding OST! Truly Superb!
KyoAni does justice! just look at all that key frame, very detailed, and all visuals are exemplar!
5/5!

BUT...aside from those things, I think this anime would be pretty generic.
Robot trying to learn what emotions are? Done to death, and I'm sick of.
The pacing, while comprehensible, is too fast. Shots and scenes last too shortly for any of them to have a meaningful impact on me.

@nekkoMaster

I don't understand the anime community's argument of, "It makes sense in the story", as though that's the point. It's fiction. Not a documentary.
You could replace Violet with literally any other typical robot-with-no-emotions, and I wouldn't be able to tell the difference.
That's why it's a good thing I'm not hyped for this anime because of the characters.
-->
.

i didn't get what are you trying to say . Why are you comparing anime to documentary ? .
Well , i would say , it's not so typical , because everything ( every attribute ) multiplies with each other to give the experience we want .
and clearly she is one of the most beautiful characters i have seen , she can't be replaced so easily LOL XD

What I was trying to say was that I've noticed that people get so emotional over fiction, that any criticism towards it, they defend with, "It makes sense", as though that's the point of the criticism.
You can literally make anything make sense.

Okay. Aside from Violet being pretty, what makes her different than literally ever robot character that tries to learn about emotions?

Unless you're twisting "masturbatory" as a word in a different way then I'm sorry I don't get you.

Also environment she lives in meaning things around here. aka settings.

And no. You weren't probably paying attention regarding Hyouka's early episode reception when it aired. People said it was boring. Characterization was straightforward and was devoid of any promise. People were already crucifying it. They also were criticizing it for the lame mysteries.

So I strongly disagree when you say the reception from the community was great when it started.

Thank you for your response.

Well I guess you don't have an explanation for "your" term since you don't use or reference the word "Masturbatory" in any kind of proper way so I guess that's that. Quality post by the way.

Wow, that was, something. The art was as good as I expected it to be. Like, how can an anime be this pretty? There were a few moments where it looked like they over stylized the background but that's fine in my opinion.

Man, some scenes gave me the feels, like when Violet talked about not needing parents. It seems like she was raised as a child soldier. That's sad.

Could you elaborate? I'm curious to know what you mean.

Late response here.

You meant warped characters? I did mean the characters that have their own set of thoughts apparently detached from what you could consider common sense. Most of the psychopathic characters would fall in this category, as well as characters from a rather dystopian setting. Characters from Shinsekai yori, Makishima Shougo from Psycho Pass, Esdeath from Akame ga Kill would be examples. They are not necessarily manic with their acts, but their purely isolated views leads to something entirely different from the norms.
Of course, not all of these characters end up being charming necessarily. It's just a way in which a character piques my interest initially.

Violet in this first episode sort of gave me a similar vibe. Whether her "broken" state will be interesting to unravel or not, that I don't know yet.

It feels like I'm watching a sequel, after being exposed to all the unbelievable amount of anticipation. Surreal feeling this, feeling that this would probably be the prettiest looking(*not necessarily best looking) 20 minutes of anime I will see in years, and that this is Kyoto's (*intended) magnum opus they've relished for years.

Not liking Koyasu's acting.

About the EP, it was v good, was on the fence in the first half but grew into it in the second. Not the most interesting premise but I still got to care about her I think. Bound to be some cheap contrarian haters and fanboys, make their minds up before watching a second of it don't they

Someone already said this but it's definitely better than Magus' bride.

So many people say that Violet is just the typical kuudere and that they don't care about her character. I don't understand this. Even though she doesn't understand her emotions, this episode constantly showed us her emotions from the very first scene and after that through her actions, facial expressions and body language. Gilbert also talks about how he saw those emotions in her. And that scene where the girl from the Auto Memoir Doll service talks about the emotions of the customer but through the flashbacks we see it's actually about Violet's emotions and then her facial expression at the end! That scene was powerful.

And ofcourse as others have stated the animation was beautiful and it had a good soundtrack.

Sorry I ended up writing so much, but I really enjoyed this first episode and was annoyed by people just saying: "Violet is boring, overhyped, NEXT".

Rest of the episodes better not end with her typing on a typewriter.

I still don't understand why people rate a show after watching just 1 episode. See this one Mahoutsukai no Yome too. Already on top 100 list (also the popularity number).

Better watch 3 episodes before rating.

Though the 1st episode is really well animated. OST is good. Overall OK, can carry on with it.

Its better from what I really expected, the emotion from the characters with its superb animation, voice acting, and sounds, hook me even at the very first minute. Its too painful too watch Violet, she still don't what happened to her Major after the war, then comes flashbacks, feels :'(

Interesting premise, what happens to a person who survive in a war, and coping up with the post-war daily life. Looking forward for further episodes.

I admit very frankly that I found strange what I saw with what was told in the synopsis, however, it was a good start, given the dark tone and dramatic situations. I hope that the direction is this and does not fall into trivial situations sweetened or out of place comedy; I want to cry so much with this anime series and torment myself for the events that will be told. Really fascinating graphics, as well as the soundtrack. Very good animations like quality, a pleasure for the eyes.

I've got to say, as someone who went into this without watching PVs or anything and completely avoiding the hype train, this is probably the best first episode of any show this season, and I am SO EXCITED to continue watching. The way they're doling out the backstory in pieces and flashbacks and such is addictive as hell, I love the character interactions, and even though Violet is pretty emotionless overall, the moments where the sun shines through the clouds are very well done and you can see the fire inside her. I'm really looking forward to seeing her grow as a character, and I hope the lieutenant gets some part of his redemption, as he does seem to be legitimately trying to help her. The scene with the stuffed animals and his bloodshot eyes was a very powerful one in my mind. Thank you based KyoAni, you are truly godly.
