This was a fantastic episode that not only built the world but also did wonders for Akane's characterization. If the first episode was a harsh introduction to the ugly side of this world, this episode fleshes it out a lot more.

From the very start this episode gives a bit of insight into Akane. She's confused about her role in this world but she has a strong will. In a world where people's mental states can be altered by any kind of problem, her psycho-pass remains stable despite her confusion. It seems to me that Akane is something of an anachronism in this world. Someone that actually struggles with their role instead of just accepting the role society has chosen for them. Everyone's aptitude is pretty much decided from their early developmental stages and their lives are dictated from there. Akane is a bit different because her talents gave her a choice, but she is still struggling with even more basic issues that the people in this future just push to the side for the most part. Kogami is the only one that even tries to understand what she is going through, probably because he seems to have his own purpose beyond what the system has designated for him.

Thinking of Akane as an anachronism in the world makes her a great stand in for the audience. She's someone that struggles with the status quo of the society and watching her struggle gives a good amount of insight into the society. I definitely liked her much more after this episode. She's flawed and human which make her a great character even if that bowl cut look awful.

While developing Akane this episode also develops the world a bit. We get a peek at the fancy tech of this world and there is some really cool stuff there. Being able to change her simple apartment in to anything she chooses is interesting and would give even the simplest dwellings a face lift.

So Sybil in the name of the AI that controls this world. It determines everyone's day to day like from their earliest stages. Obviously in this world having a clear psycho-pass is the key to everything. Akane's friends are jealous of how clear her reading is, even calling her mentally beautiful in a jealous tone. In this society it looks like there is a new standard for beauty as it's not just your physical appearance but your psycho-pass rating as well. It's interesting to see how this new technology alters how people see each other and effects they everyday reactions with each other to such a great extent.

I think this episode was necessary after the really ugly, albeit good first episode. See what everyday life is like through the eyes of the protagonist is important. Judging by the last episode the future is a bleak world, with a really skewed sense of morals and it lead to the question why would anyone want to live this way? This episode actually showed that the society isn't a miserable existence, but has it's own value and the needs of the people are being met. At least for now. Things could go all wrong later and the system is definitely still flawed but this episode does something to balance out the mostly negative impression the last episode left behind. I'm not saying the society is perfect or even acceptable and there is much more to be revealed but it's own the second episode.

So Akane is the answer to the question who watches the Watchmen. Her job isn't to stop crime or even catch criminal. She is there to look after that wolves that protect the flock. Latent criminals themselves, they have some insight into the mind of other latent criminals giving them sharper instincts. But for obvious reasons they can't be left to run on their own. These people that Sibyl has decided are beyond rehabilitation have no choice but to serve this function or go to jail. They've already been discarded by society so the guy's jealously and frustration over Akane at the cafeteria made sense. She had all the options, but he's been written off as a latent criminal since he was five years old.

I'm pretty happy with where this is going so far.

Lots of moe.... and fanservice... mostly exposition and world building this ep. *yawn*
Atleast the op and ed were nice. Maybe I just miss the people exploding... can we have more of that? Also what happened to no moe? If that jellyfish and police uniform thingies weren't moe idk what is.

Are you kidding me, Ayane isn't cute, she looks dub?!

Holy shit, the end of the hospital scene felt so off, way too dramatic, neither did I like the transition to the office.

Shion is hot, don't kill her off, I like Kagari and Masaoka a lot but the latter one is probably going to die.

It felt like the producers were trying a tiny bit hard to set up or "develop" the storyline, and it's a downside because the episode lacks action, but we can tell that it won't be like this the whole time...if it does....it will be plain boring!

I hope it gets better !

So I've watched the OP about a hundred times now. I'm calling right now that Akane will kill Shinya in the end. It's what I think the OP is implying, anyways, with all the Akane gun pointing. Though I'd actually like it more if Shinya killed Akane. Oh, it'd be better if there was romance between them too, but one of them had to kill the other. Either way I'm excited to see how it plays out.

Great OP. ED oddly seemed much better than the first episode...do not know why...

Animation is fantastic. Concept of changing the style of your apartment is pretty awesome.

At first I thought Shinya was just lying to give her some reassurance. Give her confidence and establish trust to avoid getting shot at. She's naive enough to believe him. Or he could be an honest guy. I'm not sure until his past is revealed.

Great episode, loads of character development for Akane. Lmao I like how Akane and Tomomi wore those holo-suits. They look and sound so cute. xD Shuusei playing PSP in the office ftw. I was surprised to see him act so aggressive though damn.

Shinya and Akane moment near the end was very nice. Hearing the ED properly, I have to say I fucking love it. Man, the beginning of it got me so pumped for some reason hehe. EGOIST ftw! And of course the OP is equally as awesome. Abnormalize is such a good song and that animation style is well-suited. :D

Also seeing Akane change clothes via a handheld make-up looking device was pretty cool.

It seems to me that half (eh more than a half probably, I'm trying to be optimistic) of the people who are watching this don't understand what they're watching. Not in a sense that it is complicates, cause it isn't and everything was presented clearly so far. "That system makes no sense; Akane is irritating; nothing happened; blah blah blah."

1, that system makes sense, in theory...Akane said she trusted Sybil system. For now, I dare to say. Well, I definitely don't trust it. It's scary to imagine living in such a word, but this subject isn't new (living under surveillance and such), and comparing this to other dystopias this isn't even thaaaat insane...It's a good thing that we have this kind of setting. I find it very interesting and promising. And ofc morally challenging.
2, I don't have any problem with the girl. I do not understand the hate this early in the show. It usually takes me a while to judge on characters..and on everything else. Plus, Akane has a lot of room to grow, I can see that happening, I'll be waiting for it. Some people who accuse the characters of being flat, dumb, weak, etc, are being more shallow than the damn characters. There, I said it.
3, Ok there was almost no action, but it's not like nothing happened. If the previous episode was a demonstrative introduction to the setting, this one was more character oriented. And it was really good, imo.

Oh and I loooove the OP. *cough*Sigure is one of my favourite bands ever and I admire them a lot *cough* It was different, idk, I wasn't expecting something like that.

Agreed. I guess after having tons of stuff people are complaining about in other animes from the last few seasons, it doesn't surprise me that more then half of audience for this show so far to have such .......complaints (?) about it >__>;;
After so many years finally this kind of dark anime returns and moewashed anime fans can't receive it so well anymore, I guess? xD

Honestly I don't get all Akane- hate going around either. After only first episode moreover! xD she's not even close to those "useless" pushover characters everyone are comparing her too. And I haven't seen anything "moe" beside that penis-like jellyfish thing at Akane's place. I guess you can count as fanservice those few seconds we got close up on that blonde doctors chest too >,> If it doesn't bounce over screen for more then 10 minutes per episode you can barely call it fanservice, geez <___<

Kougami gave off impression like he would be another aloof/glomy/douchey character, but after this episode I think he's really a nice guy :D

This thing is perfect so far, OP and ED are LOVE! >u<

This episode broached out one of the reasons why most citicens seem to be putting up with this system with flaws they are even aware of themselves: Convenience.

Sybil makes the decisions for them and takes away the burden of thinking for oneself. Those who get the short end of the stick are in no position to change anything and the one who got lucky keep quiet.
Akane received the previlege of choice as she was enabled to choose where she could work, a fact that seems to provocate redhead Shuusei upon hearing it. He continiously taunts her during her second day at work though his attacks are hidden and are not severe enough to be recognized as such at first sight.

So, Akane basically wants to be special by doing things that presumably only she can do well? No doubts that Urobochi will let her aspirations fall to pieces.

great episode for me, really enjoying it so far.

Fan service? meh hardly, about 2 seconds of cleavage and a little part with akane which i dont really even call fanservice cus all you really see is her back anyway. i really dont see what the big deal is to be honest, i thnk the "fanservice" with the other woman was to show that shes a slutty character or something along those lines xD

Its not like theres an over abundance of fanservice an un naturally large tits, its more to make the series feel more mature/adult in a way i guess. its not like a show that people can watch because they love fanservice, if they watched it for that they would be disappointed >.< its also not like it draws its viewers in because of boobs xD

THAT ED!!! SUPER HYPER MEGA ULTRA AWESOME!!! This series has hands down the best OP-ED!!!

Loving the series.

And no, the jellyfish or droids are not moe but nothing is stopping you from "feeling" moe towards them.

Those elements are most likely what they come up with to please women, remember that polemic statement before and how moe was banned but they also needed elements for women? Since well, you know, noitamina is mostly targeted to women.... Those are likely the answer, merely cute elements for them, if you ask any girl she will definitely tell you those are cute (not moe), of course if you ask otaku men and how perceptive they are after some declarations they will quickly say oh! its moe....

As fanservice/bath scene...they are not grotesquely there for the purpose of fanservice, those scenes have been there since the beginning of anime, Ive see them time and time again since the 60s, well, maybe since the 70s and till now, again, we are all too perceptive nowadays.

I agree I would want this as dark as possible but again, I take some of the "light" "cute" elements we see are there to please women, otherwise this series would be totally out of place here in the noitamina timeslot and should have targeted a instead timelost for men and seinen. Too much dark elements would alienate women surely.

That said, loving the series, its only competence for best series of the season its most likely only Shinsekia Yori.

Ever since that old guy was cut off mid sentence in the elevator on the first episode, I've had a sneaking suspicion that he used to be an observer like Akane before his sense of justice and what he was willing to do to uphold it got "warped" according to Sybil.

Maybe some of the other enforcers were on the official side of things as well before they got demoted.

This anime is blowing everything else this season out of the water. I just love how much detail and attention went into creating the setting, from the machinery, to the fashion, to the implications that the Sybil technology had. While this episode had some 'cute' elements included to soften the anime for the 'moe' demographic, these elements still remain grounded and set aside when sh*t hits the fan, thus not distracting us from what I think will be a very good story.

Really hope they can keep this level of quality throughout.

Anyone considering that the creators of this system are probably all latent criminals?

After all, to be able to design such a system means that you would probably be labeled as a potential threat in the system you created yourself.

That's why all the enforcers are latent criminals, which is in itself a total irony. Just the fact of executing other living beings will negatively impact your Psycho-Pass, unless you are a latent criminal already.

So, the system itself is essentially supported by special type of latent criminals (the rational but brutal kind).
