Still on the fence on this one, but I'll stick for a while and hope for the best to watch it all the way. Afterall, I'm a huge sucker for old school "makeover" stories. As many have mentioned, Tomozaki does feel like a discount Hachiman, but lucky for me, I never really cared for Hachiman. But Tomozaki's edgy and downer monologues does feel a bit tedious (although I get it, it's also part of his initial character, so I'll just tolerate with him for now). I like the idea of how Aoi has many faces towards her close friends but also can be more mean towards someone like Tomozaki that has so little value for life and self steem (though love works pretty well in these scenarios). But the thing I really don't buy out of her background story is that she's already a top athlete at her school, a perfect student in her class, has a surplus of time to hang out with the popular guys and still has time left to grind the leaderboard in a very competitive game that guys like Tomozaki with no self care for their appearance or social life can only achieve to be at the top? It's impossible for someone like her to have that much time to excel on all those fields at once. |

People need to quit comparing this guy to Hachiman, I watched and loved oregairu, Hachiman was a big reason cause he had smarts, common sense and knowledge of how the world really works. And his character was awesome......but this guy is fucking retarded! I mean come on, I know some dudes that have given up but even they COMB THERE HAIR.....this is like someone took a bunch of "normies" and said tell me what a fucking failure would look and act like...it's just so cringe, I'll keep watching for now but this show is just weird. Also this is coming from a guy who was a for real NEET loser who had no joke ZERO friends, was major over weight, no fashion sense and never even really talked to a girl till 24. But man I was never as oblivious as this guy, he is acting like he's on the spectrum! No joke he has some form of Asperger's! PS now I'm a pretty normal dude who keeps in shape, can piece together an outfit for any occasion and even had a girlfriend/fiance....until recently. (Still an anime freak) But that's cause I changed myself using my own willpower and knowledge I got off of any television show or the internet. This guy and show tho is just........ maddening. |

I hope he changes more and more so he can find a girlfriend in the future. But I have a hunch who his girlfriend is gonna be. Nope, Aoi is not gonna be his girlfriend........for now, that is. |

I thought it would be a good idea to look through the comments to see if anyone had a similar opinion to mine and darn was I wrong, what's with you people? Let me be straight, the female lead is not some amazing "angel" who knows no wrong. While I don't think she is a devil either she literally is a complete ass who is driven by her own desire. While I do think Tomozaki should try to look at life a bit different I think shoving unrealistic goals down his throat and forcing him to completely change himself is ridiculous. All these people saying the MC is garbage, I can't understand? While yes his attitude and thoughts on life are a bit extreme at times the female lead literally met with this man, ridiculed him and persecuted him for his looks and attitude, and than without question or self regarding starting forcing unrealistic views and social goals down his throat. If here goals were something a bit more realistic like "Make a couple of friends" it wouldn't be an issue. He has obviously shown that he can talk to people just fine, while obviously a bit under his breath he is still capable of holding social interactions, he'll he even went and met with a random ass player (at the time) in public. All I'm saying is Tomozaki is definitely be treated in an unfair manner. |

Honestly, this show had me hooked before the 1st episode was even half over... If they keep the momentum up, this is going to be a top show for sure. The main characters inner dialog alone is awesome, but the potential shown now that he is interacting with a peer is great. Let's hope they don't screw this up. |

It is pretty cool to see an anime that has some sort of message. You may agree or disagree with it (I am not sure myself how much I agree and with which part), but it is certainly thought-provoking. I don't think they intended the MC as a self-insert character (at least I refuse to :D), rather than the "absolute worst", so if he can improve his situation (and not just magically, but with a lot of effort), most likely you, who is at a much better starting point initially, can too. The anime is not afraid to say it out loud: if you are this much of a hardcore addict to something it is NOT GOOD. It is a pretty brave thing to criticize your potential audience. (and I am not above all this, to a certain extent I am affected too) I hate all these self-comforting anime, like I don't remember the name, where the dude was in a pretty horrible life situation, no social interactions, always overworked, and the message of the anime was: It is PERFECTLY NORMAL, no need to worry, no need to change anything, here molest some fox lolies. So the anime has a pretty interesting starting idea, we'll see the execution, hopefully it will not go down some generic harem path. |

Urgh never thought I would ever hate everything in an anime episode😅😅 This was hella cliché and annoying actually. Like the dude really changes his way of living just because some random chick tells him that he's a loser. Cringeee |

I'm a big Oregairu fan so I can't help but compare this series to that one. I like the message they are trying to portray (even though its been done a bunch of times). But the way things are just happening, its not even a bit realistic. I don't hate the main character but I just can't get myself to empathize with his behavior and outlook in life. But maybe my opinion will change if his past will be explored more in the future episodes. Let's see. |

I was hoping for a little more focus on the gaming aspect; seeing some information about technicals and coming up the ranks. I'm a little disappointed the focus seems like it'll be integrating a gamer into real-life and making them conform to other's standards. Either way, guess I'll give it at least another episode or two and see what happens. Good gaming anime is pretty scarce. |

It's more about how Tomozaki will handle various social situation (like making friends), how he handles the quest Hinami gave to him, and what he thinks about people around him. Volume 8 LN is probably the most atafami heavy volume, since in that volume Tomozaki and Hinami went to a local atafami gathering, meeting with other people in the community like a famous Atafami youtuber, etc. He will aso meet a pro Atafami player and his meeting with him will help him to make his own resolve to be a pro player |

I'm assuming unless this gets renewed for multiple seasons we won't get that far. Considering the content of this show, I would be very surprised to wake up in a couple of years and see a season 3 or 4. So, my best bet of seeing that particular storyline would be to pick up the light novel I suppose. |

Yeah, like I highly doubt they will mention in this show any mental illness or trauma, just "Are you depressed? Just Don't be" approach. As someone who was bullied I hope to see some trauma. But they definitely trying to make something that at least will try to help. Like surprisingly from what I read dating games can help with dating in real life. |

AgehaYoru said: RayReynolds said: There is a lot to take in with this show, and virtually all of it is a ugly and horrifying. Mostly, it's the long speech towards the end about how life and society are fair for everybody, and nobody is born with anything more than superficial advantages or disadvantages that can be overcome with a little effort. I don't even know where to begin with that one. Whether you want to take it on from a wealth angle, a racial angle, or any of a dozen others, it's… uh, certainly one hell of a central thesis to lay down. Which such impeccable timing to real world incidents too! It's pretty difficult to try to see it in the more charitable light of "we can all change and be better people for ourselves and others" when every single character is a massive asshole. This includes the manic pixie girl. She acted friendly in school, then upon running into him later, starts endlessly rattling off that she thinks he's actually a loser that she actually has nothing but disgust for and her previous friendliness was just an act. And all of them have Marty McFly brain rot because everything hinges on being called a chicken (facepalm). The lesson from learning that the person you were worshipping as a god thirty seconds ago is also secretly a massive jackass, but also well-liked, should probably not be... "teach me to fake it like you." I mean, it certainly could be, if the show gave any indication that it understood these were all horrible people, but it most certainly does not. She's great and totally right in every way. We should all be more like her, looking down on those we think are dregs. They deserve their suffering for not trying hard enough. Calm down, lol. It always made me chuckle when someone's ranting angrily about Hinami, about her faking it, she's a manic pixie dream girl (not true) and so on, but it's exactly the point that the author made and probably you'd feel like a dumb person after the story getting to "that point" in the climax (of volume 3). ==== Anyway, I'm really looking forward to see haters/anime only watcher reaction to the climax, which is a turning point for the series. I expect they will adapt the first three books, which is a perfect place for the ending for the anime. Ok, now you are giving me some hopes for this series. But also you need to take into account that for many people this is touchy subject especially in otaku community. Like I got a few times triggered by what Hinami said. Talking to girls? I would start to profusely sweat and got shivers by just thinking about this. xD And that "Are you depressed? Just Don't be" approach, I really hate it. |

Wow, so is this another variant of Pygmalion or more like animated guide for nolifers? Either way, count me in! Have to say I hated MC's geek attitude in the first half of episode as it seemed like usual anime trope (and it reminded me of Oregairu a lot) but hey, "hate the character not writer", and it seems there was actually a reason for it and he'll go out of his shell eventually. Now, I'm not completely sold on his instant 180 change from calling the life kamige instead of kusoge after just one her sentence (felt too fast) and I don't really see her motivation to lose time with him but if it works as the premise, well, I can turn a blind eye on it for now. Also, let's pretend they also didn't use another overused anime trope when two random players of one online game actually know each other and live in the same area, right? What I really hope though is that this premise doesn't lead us to your usual harem rabukome or at least not so obviously. I'm acutally more interested in his progress here and what goals Aoi gives him to reach his goal (and I hope he won't turn into selfish jerk along the way). Obviously... it's actually obvious who the ending girl here is so the relation of two would be also intersting to watch. Anyway, Kanemoto Hisako's (Erina) voice acting was on spot (again). Not sure about Satou Gen as he is rather unexperienced still and hope he would be able to mimic some Tomozaki's progress. Kayanon is voicing Fuuka - that white-haired shy girl sitting in the back of the class so would be also nice to hear. |

The word incel is getting thrown around waaay too much. What makes this MC an incel? Seriously, tell me because because last time I checked being a loner doesn't make you an incel. Do people know what the actual definition of the word is? The MC has his ways but he's not hurting anybody. The FMC on the other hand came across very stuck-up and judgemental because of her own preconceived notions. How about liking somebody for who they are and not forcing them to pretend to be somebody they're not? I never got the whole hype around being 'popular'anyway. P.S. Why do characters like the MC always have to have the popular yet bitchy little sister character? Those types always annoy the shit out of me. |

Don't worry, it's not turning into harem and it's not as predictable as people claimed it to be. I have yet to see anyone guessed it right. If you want to hear what Sato Gen's voice for Chad Tomozaki sounds like, I recommend you listening to the drama CD here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLsy3Nc9XN2VlhahUEf5tUeNkAqJ0fl0r9 In the radio drama, Sato Gen said that it was difficult to portray Tomozaki's voice in the beginning (pre-training) because at the time he's already used with Tomozaki's voice/tone in the drama CD. But I think he does a great job at portraying how Tomozaki sounds like at the beginning. Also can't wait to hear how his voice changes as Tomozaki trains himself. skysurf said: AgehaYoru said: tried to guess the story just from the first episode, I haven't seen any of them got it right. Tomozaki's focus in the beginning isn't even about romance, it's about finding his new self, how he feels happy with his progress, finding new friends, have something to talk about with other people. It's a story about his personal growth. And later he will learn that Hinami, the unrealistic top-at-everything girl, isn't always right. The author does a great job at riling you and all other haters up. I think it's a shame that some people have serious ADHD problem that they drop series within a single episode just because her, even though the author's point is to make her look bad, she's not always right and has her own flaw. Tomozaki is one of hidden gems of this season, and I think you'll be surprised at how you find the story isn't as bad as you think years later when you properly touch the series. Feel free to drop it, but since your assessment is already proven wrong in so many level, I think it's better just to shut up and talking like you know about the series and making fool of yourself. |

Yeah it is pretty cool that an anime is kind of trying to inspire people to better themselves (and not just the usual like: uh,,, so,,, be a good person cuz being good is good and being bad is bad). Of course not everybody will like it and find it inspiring, I for sure will not follow these "steps of self-improvement", but some others might, and there is a chance they will improve their life. Anyway, I just like the general idea, we'll see if they execute it to my liking. Macducci said: MC: Life sucks. you have to be a fake person to succeed. Girl #1: No, you're wrong, life is amazing and excting. I'll teach you how to enjoy it. MC: Ok then, teach me. Girl #1: First Lesson: Be a fake person to succeed. But you do have to be a "fake person" to succeed. Looking at it this way everybody is a fake person, everybody has a lot of different faces, you treat family members, friends, classmates, colleagues, total strangers all differently. You need to learn how to act in each environment, if you act the same at work as at home, you'll be having problems. The two of them has a very different viewpoint. To put it simply MC is "losing", Girl #1 is "winning" at the game of life. I myself if I keep losing in a videogame, I'll inevitably think it is a bad game and quit, but someone who is good at it and is winning will think it is a great game. The only problem is you can't quit the game of life (I mean you can, but please don't), so you need to keep playing it anyway. If all you do is constantly complain that the game is unfair certainly won't help "winning" it. Of course, life is unfair. There are plenty of people saying even if I tried I would fail because life is unfair, without actually trying. And the only sure way of losing is never even trying to win. I don't address any of this personally to you, I am just trying to explain what I think the idea behind the anime could be. |

I think a good contrast shown here in this episode that's not being mentioned much is between Tomozaki's game with Nakamura at the start & the later conversation with Hinami. In the former, Tomozaki is clearly angry at Nakamura insulting his favourite game just because he's losing at it, but then the #2 player of that same game & the only one he respects as an opponent, makes him realise the hypocrisy he has by holding the exact same attitude towards life. That's what makes him want to learn better social skills from her and find out if life still seems like a terrible game even when you're "good at it". Also not sure why people don't understand why Hinami decides to help him improve. She says it very clearly in the episode, the one person she found who was better than her at something is Nanashi, no matter how much effort she put into the game. But then he turned out to not even be trying in life, which she considers to be equally as good. That makes her feel worthless. She's helping him because that's also the best thing for her, essentially she decides to help her rival Nanashi, not her classmate Tomozaki. I don't think I'll ever understand the perspective of life = a game though, it still feels cringey to me but hey, it works for the characters and lets them visualize things in a way that works for them as hardcore gamers so it's fine. |

megalionv said: it's shit lol They took the average incel redemption story and shoved "gamer" words everywhere. The MC says shit like "my gamer blood is restless" and "this is the worst offence for a gamer" like fuck off. The chick takes off her makeup and looks literally the same and that's supposed to convince him. the only people who defend this shit is kids and NEETs because "iz relatebel" Sorry, it's a story for chads who are not afraid to take a step forward & improve their life :) https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/interest/2020-09-11/bottom-tier-character-tomozaki-fan-is-inspired-to-get-buff/.163845 A fan who does Tomozaki-kun Challenge also gets a girlfriend thanks to the motivation from this series https://twitter.com/Yaku_yuki/status/1288437984103030785 |

As friends, I would like this boy and girl being disheveled and in torn jeans (I like that style) but if they were working in a coffee shop I would prefer them to be nicely dressed and clean. |

Oh god, this girl is so annoying and rude. At least she doesn't have long black hair, a small blessing. |

This was so embarrassingly cringeworthy that I can only conclude it was written by a 12 year old who unironically believes that "real life is a shitty game". Having a protagonist who unironically does the whole "while I may be the loser in the real world, in the game world you are the loser" and tries to frame him as right is absolutely pathetic. Awful anime, but I can see the appeal for people who find Tomozaki relatable. |

It was alright but doesn't make justice of Fly's art. PA Works did it vastly better. Also soon people will be buttblasted when they learn that Aoi had boyfriend. |

Proj9 really likes making game shows. Well that's quite mean just looks down & assume he's a loser. Nice designs reminding of the Irozuku frog faces. One looks like modernized Mikuru. She made insanely hard shortterm goals for poor Tomozaki wth. If he really bottom tiered then should start small steps. Overly long monologues drag pacing, hopefully gets more interesting & less asshole characters. |
