I wish those four can live together happily forever :(

Also, I don't think you can't die that easily... Especially falling from 2nd or 3rd balcony
I mean it's not that much of height, from the looks of it that is

Good god Kiku, keep that tongue in your mouth!!

Well we all knew it was gonna happen, it was just a matter of when.
I really did love that parallel between Sukeroku's story and his relationship with Miyokichi. The way he called out her real name there really got me...it's weird that Miyokichi was so obsessively in love with Kiku and yet they never told each other their real names- only Sukeroku. Makes me think Miyokichi never loved Kiku in the first place. More like a twisted obsession with what he represented to her.

All this time, it's been Sukeroku who's portrayed as the selfish, irresponsible one but this episode showed that he's changed in his own way. It seems like out of the three, he's actually the most selfless...he did for Miyokichi what Kiku would never do, and that's giving up Rakugo for her. Despite being a crappy dad, unlike Miyokichi, Sukeroku never abandons Konatsu.
Anyways, this episode was beautiful and I'm really gonna miss Sukeroku.

I'll be honest, this episode came off as strangely manipulative and... I'm just very disappointed with the way Miyokichi's character was handled. Since this was her last appearance, it was most obvious here. I really, really hope it was an adaption flaw, because otherwise this could be a great series. But as it stands, the weakness of the character becomes a weakness in the series. And that's a right shame, especially since Konatsu is so enjoyable...

It's a very Rakugo-esque ending, wouldn't you say? Art is a mirror to our souls and so it goes with life as well.

Bad execution I agree. But it did not come out of the blue, everything hinted down to the condition of the house was provided to the viewer. The story of the woman who tries to pull off a dual suicide was constantly referenced. The moment she said she will have her vengeance was a dead ringer. As I said the beginning of the tale and the shock ending is rakugo.

Shit felt like I was watching a play at the theatre. Intense as fuck, my man.

However, I have to wonder how true this version of Sukeroku and Miyo's death actually is, since it contradicts Konatsu's own version of the events on top of being far too "dramatic" to seem all that plausible.

That being said I adored Sukeroku's performance: funny how a man who supposedly stopped practising for so many years just managed to give the best performance in his entire career.

I just wanna clarify something.

Did Miyokichi come to love Shin as well? Or was she just relieved that someone was willing to die with her in the end?

Sekuroku's life seemed like it would turn into the story of Shibahama. Everything was looking so good for those two, but then their pasts caught up to them.

I knew I'd have to get to this scene eventually, but I was never ready for it.

Komatsu was asleep on her dad's chest so soundly after what might've been the happiest day of her life. But when she wakes up she'll find out that she's become an orphan. I don't want to watch the next episode ๐Ÿ˜”

Damn.... damn damn damn damn damn!!! What an episode!! Sukeroku's performance, the confessions, the double suicide(?).... all of it. The story progression was so damn good. I just feel bad for Konatsu. I mean c'mon, although the pair of them aren't exactly the best of adults, as a parent they should've at least considered the repercussions on their daughter for what they decided to do. Also that height didn't even seem so bad!!! They should've gotten away from death with a few broken bones and a concussion or something. Bahhh!! Dx My ranting aside, this episode was great and really gripping!

I think my favorite rakugo story we've heard is still the one with the robber and the man who couldn't pay, but the one in this episode with the purse on the beach was definitely up there. Shin is a really good storyteller who deserves to be the 8th Generation.

And yet, he's not, and IT'S ALL THIS CRAZY GEISHA BITCH'S FAULT. I was literally just moaning "Shiiiiit. Fuuuuck. Noooo." at my screen for the last couple of minutes of the episode. I knew it was coming, but it was still powerful/hard to watch.

Before I let out my emotions over this fucking episode, let me say that I really enjoyed Shin's performance. My face was lit up while watching and listening to his rakugo. Ohmygod. Honestly, great job to Shin and Bon's seiyuu. Gaaaaah! ;-;

Now, moving on...

DON'T TELL ME THAT'S HOW SHIN DIED? AND HE DIED ALONG WITH MIYOKOCHI? WHAT. HOW ABOUT THE FLASHBACKS WITH BON ON TOP OF SHIN WITH BLOOD ALL OVER HIS HANDS AND ON THE FLOOR THEN KONATSU SAW HIM, SO SHE THOUGHT THAT IT WAS BON WHO KILLED HER FATHER. OHMYGOD WHAT. NOOOO. I'M SO LOST. HAHAHAHA.

So, Bon still have feelings for Miyokochi after the fucked ups she did? Or it was all just a pity? Jesus. Idk how to feel about this. She's gone in the head, Bon. What the fuck are you doing? Why did you lick her dirty tears, though I find it hot (I was jealous for a sec), but dang whhhhhy!?!?!? RED ALERT!

I feel so bad for Shin if this is how he really died. He was so blinded by his love for Miyokochi (or Yurie). This episode fucked me up, maaan. Nope. Nope. Nope.

This ending annoys me a lot. Why didn't Kiku scream for help? Why didn't Sukeroku try using the eaves that's clearly within his reach? Whoever wrote/storyboarded this scene clearly didn't care the details.

I would rather like to see a real double suicide than some manipulative accidental death.

You're two people grabbing onto each other 3 stories up, surely you can swing yourselves to a window ledge or something. I didn't buy that death at all. It just felt too immediate and we got rid of two important characters.

Tear licking was something. I guess he did want her...but then he wanted his art...and then it turns out his art is worth nothing. Very confusing show, not sure what the message is.

The whole convoluted scene where all three meet up again is messed up. None of it made a lot of sense, but the show has always been kooky like that I guess.

I once again find myself at a loss for words. How this show was able to take something that I completely expected and leave me at the edge of my seat up until the climactic moment was truly impressive. This episode was flawless. We got to see Sukeroku do a wonderful, full, and beautiful rakugo performance, one last time. We got to see Yakumo gain motivation for his future coldness, as I'm sure he will blame himself for the death of Miyokichi and Sukeroku. And while I'm sad that Sukeroku died, I'm just as excited to see the conclusion of this excellent show.

Wow this is just of one of the most anti-climatic ep I have ever watched , it was just terrible konatsu was supposed to be here when they died but she was not and kiku did not have blood on his hand like the image in another ep . Miyo was always a terrible person and she showed once again how horrible she was , how can anybody like her I wonder , she was needy , dependent , selfish and the worst in this episode is not even her , kiku licking her tears and kissing her ? wtf ? Hatsu pleading her back even if he had to lose rakugo ? Nothing made sense everyone was acting out of character but Miyo .

Accurate description - It was like we were in an audience watching a stage play. Which is why I don't feel it's too dramatic because most theater is intense. As someone mentioned in an earlier post about it, meaning the incident, being believable. I felt the same about Shakespeare's "Romeo & Juliet"; although I can't imagine someone actually going through that in a real-life version of that tale; however, it's a classic.

Konatsu was a child and I wonder how much Kiku, at that time, could have revealed or kept from her. As mentioned in an earlier episode, she stated angrily that Kiku had killed her father. I didn't understand it at the time, but now I get it. Kiku was affected by both Miyo & Suke's death also, therefore although he was starting to come around, he probably reverted to his old self while raising Konatsu. He more likely kept everything to himself and never shared the truth - until now.

Suke aced his last performance and I do believe it was influenced by his life with Miyo, no matter how messed up it was. Before, Suke lived only for Rakugo and was cavalier and carefree. Now, there was a different passion. The love a woman and his child. The reason he was able to give such a performance was that he had experienced life's hardships.

In Miyo's case, I feel she was obsessed with the unattainable (Kiku). He injured what little pride she had as a woman because he rejected her and she could not let it go. Not even after getting involved with Suke and having a child with him. "Hell hath no fury...", but I digress.

Rating 10 - in a big way, for this anime. One of the best series I've seen this year.

Shin's last performance was also his best one, not just how he performed, or due to the story itself but also because of the parallels to his own life. Beautiful.

What came afterwards was dramatic and equally twisted, shocking and simply heartbreaking.

Bon's moment of weakness, the extent of Yurie's shattered soul and Shin's willingness to give up Rakugo. It was so intense.

The simplistic imagery during their fall and the line "I can't let her go alone" elevated the whole scene and brought me to tears. What a bittersweet and beautiful ending to this episode.

Great episode, but I can't help but think I would have found it more impactful if I actually cared about Sukeroku. To me, he's always seemed like a bit of a parasite, reliant on the generosity and protection of other's to continue living his carefree life. Think about the number of times Kikuhiko had to lend him money to fund his drinking habits and cover for his fuck-ups to the masters.

When he lost rakugo and then Miyokichi, though, it seemed like things got even worse - I can't help but dislike a guy who lazes around drinking and refusing to work while his kid daughter earns the money to keep them afloat. Eventually, it seemed like he was going to try and turn over a new leaf, but, naturally, events conspired to prevent him for ever having a chance.

This episode had both the highs and lows, Sukeroku being able to perform again after many years with his own daughter who is a rakugo fanatic finally able to see her father showcase his rakugo to the public and seeing him absolutely blow away the crowd, as well as the lows in Shin and Miyokichi falling off a balcony together while holding each other tightly as their hearts were closest together while dying compared to how disconnected they were previous to that. Tragic yet poetic at the same time. Miyokichi always disregarded Shin and you could tell from the start that them getting together, having a kid together, living together, all felt like mistakes made out of desperation. Especially considering how both were lost due to Kikuhiko, who couldn't communicate his feelings that well either until now. Poor Konatsu must have it so bad for losing both her parents together, especially her father who she idolized despite the bad habits.

I do feel like Miyokichi's character could have been better handled and everything felt a bit sudden with Sukeroku just randomly confessing his real love for her while stating to sacrifice rakugo for her, although you could say that by getting to perform one last time in front of his daughter, he was ready to move on for her sake. Still feel like the pacing for that particular aspect could have been better handled for sure. But regardless, still an excellent episode overall with both content to celebrate and despair over.

Well, the episode definitely raises more than a few eyebrows,.
But I thought I would check out this particular episode forum on POVs of Miyokichi since I know she will create a lot of discussion points. I skimmed through all the posts, and seems like none of the ones on Miyokichi were views in the same light as me.

I don't particularly hate her, and I can't really "defend" her with the "she's a woman who have been let down too many times" point. I mean, I have a totally different take on the one defining action she took,

The scene where Kikuhiko officially broke up with Miyokichi, Miyokichi sworn revenge, she said she will haunt him in death too. She said a few vengeful statements, and I thought that just expresses how much she wanted to make him suffer too, and she did not said those in a literal sense.
So when she coincidentally met Sukeroku along the river, and intentionally seek out his comfort, I thought that was how she was going to carry out her revenge. (There's no way she was seeking out another chance at love when the breakup happened on the same night)

She was going to destroy or take away that one other person that Kikuhiko adores. She did show and admitted to being jealous of the relationship and bond they both shared in an earlier episode too.

Which is why I thought her claiming that she knew Kikuhiko would come for her and that she was waiting, was her being desperate to the point of delusional in that she knew deep down that Kikuhiko would seek out Sukeroku, and evidently find her too. She intentionally removed Sukeroku from Kikuhiko's beloved Rakugo world, and bet that eventually Kikuhiko would come to them and see how much she had removed Sukeroku from Rakugo.

I thought her revenge plot was something like this. To break Kikuhiko's heart through Sukeroku~ hahaha~

And then after all those years she waited, along with being fed up with Sukeroku, she decided to just leave, then she accidentally caught wind that the BOTH of them will be performing Rakugo, in a seemingly high profile reception (relative to the small country side they were at, and with flyers going everywhere).

She then only watched Kikuhiko's performance, because she still love him, and probably only him. Her feelings of love and revenge and all that bitterness were reignited. With all that hurricane of emotions, (several people mentioned this, and I agree) she lost her composure and became psychotic.

When they first reunited, she begged for the lost love (with her acting like nothing changed, and that they only had a lover's quarrel), but that's not the only thing she was seeking, she was bitter, she wanted revenge, probably more bitter than before because she wasted her life on a man and a child she couldn't love, then while she was gone, Kikuhiko managed to dragged Sukeroku into their beloved Rakugo world again. And being more bitter than ever, she wants Kikuhiko dead, which is a far more faster "revenge", but she wants to be with him too (without interference from Sukeroku or Rakugo). Thus, the "double suicide" thing~

Hahahha~ I just thought that her character was more complex and more intricate than it is explicitly shown. Well, still not the kind of person you see in a positive light, but intriguing somehow~

Sukeroku's first rakugo performance after several years was phenomenal. But unfortunately, it was also his last.

That moment where Miyokichi and Sukeroku fell down from the balcony felt like a dream. The rakugo story really reflects on Shin and Miyokichi's relationship. Does Yurie go after Kikuhiko just because of her pride as he rejected her?

They rushed the episode a bit at the end. Miyokichi's decision to commit suicide felt a little sudden.
