Very good start, but I hope it won't get boring in the middle of anime? It was very easy for me to guess that he is going to broadcast this in different regions on different times, but I didn't expect Light will want to kill him so I didn't think that the one on TV is fake L.

I hate it when anime/manga that I enjoyed ends, especially when there could be much longer plot and when I love main heroine :P

I wish I had magic glasses that let me see real world in anime colors ;)

I love seeing Light's morals completely tank after finding the Death Note. It makes him an absolute human and fascinating character.

If Light is smarter he would not kill all the criminal with a heart attack, ofc someone will notice this.

Light lost his calm that's what caused his downfall

L sure is a genius, he find out that Kira was not some kind of god that is omni-knowing and can kill everyone, so he conclude that Kira has some kind of limitations.

And is there really a need to conceal L's face, I mean for us viewers? Cus they showed it in the opening

Ohh, this L is interesting, he got Light.

I think that was the point: from what I took from the first episode, Light wanted all criminals to know there was someone behind them ready to kill them. Light's plan sure backfired though because then his murders are easily recognisable.

Yeah I forgot that was his goal, he's too confident that no one will try to catch him.

I am ready for this game of cat and mouse to begin. Ryuk is the best bystander. He just watches the chaos ensue from the sidelines.

Damn L got him! It seems Light is fully immersed in his new found role as the bringer of "justice." An interesting game of cat and mouse ahead, I would think.

:o now this.. this is what i call a great episode.
literally got no flaw.
except that the trick was a little easy for me to figure out. (not all the details though just the fact that the one who died wasn't L) i don't really mind that though.

5/5 ~

That was a hell of a 2nd episode, I have to say. The opening episode was strong but this definitely one-upped it with ease. Death Note set up two incredibly fascinating rivals of justice, one to remove all evil standing in his way by cleansing the world as its savior while the other is there to stop him from his actions of mass murder, even if it means still having criminals live on the planet. Both haven't revealed their identities or faces, although Light already is behind on this cat and mouse game with each other, as L smartly decipher Light to be in the Kanto region of Japan through using data of Kira's first victim. Very exciting, thrilling and fascinating stuff overall and I have to commend this show for such a strong start, regardless of how it ends in the future.

i feel kinda obligated to write my second post here...
in the fall of 2008 Death Note finally arrived on italian television, as the third and last slot of the MTV Anime Night that was aired every tuesdays since almost a decade, and even if i already read the first number of the manga one year before i was ready to watch the animated series even more because italian dub is nearly always excellent (and in this case there was no exception at all).

Back then, i was working my first job in a bakery so my shifts were almost all night long starting at 2 AM, and because of this i always hit the bed already before 8 PM... but even at the cost of sacrificing one precious hour of sleep, i wanted to watch Full Metal Panic TSR and Death Note at their debut as soon as i could, they had reruns on the next saturday afternoons but i couldn't really wait four more days.

So every tuesday i set the alarm clock at the right time, and this second episode got me hooked on Death Note definitely. Since Lind L Tailor shows up, the final minutes are beyond perfect. Still have all of Light quotes memorized word by word after he is called evil, and his sudden changes of feelings between joy, despair and return to calm accepting the challenge from the real L (plus the final comments from Ryuk) are an amazing buildup to the rest of the series. Every time i rewatch both of them shouting they are justice in the ending scene i'm thrilled just as the first time after almost 13 years.

It's pretty much my all time favorite moment ever seen in any anime i watched, and some months ago i even discovered gladly that a former co-worker at McDonald's that never saw any kind of japanese animation except for Dragon Ball, Saint Seiya and Captain Tsubasa loved Death Note immediately after the first two episodes. At a wonderful con in early 2016 some cosplayers were re-enacting on the stage this first confrontation between Light and L, and i stood up and yelled "JUSTICEEEE" in the audience when it was the right time, in a very out of character moment for myself...

2023 rewatch added detail: even more than ever in this day and age, the speech of Light about the hypocrisy of humans has aged wonderfully. 100% convinced that a lot of the people that is very vocal about disliking him and his mentality would actually secretly use the Death Note itself exactly like he did.

Pretty solid foreshadowing at the beginning in which Light translates the sentence (which is about him, obviously).

I love how Ryuk is just chilling like it's no big deal. His lack of facial expression other than that sinister grimace while he speaks so casually cracks me right up.

Okay Light, but how'd your desk blow up, bro?

So now we have L (prodigy detective trope), yet I'm so fascinated by him already.
I got heavily into this. Brilliant.

Light is killing wanting people to know it's Kira, so that it prevents people from doing bad knowing they could die if they do evil things, not just ego. At least this was the point he claimed when he started.

I really wasn't expecting Light to write the name of the fake L, given how smart he's supposed to be and how obvious the bait was.

The moral ambiguity also falls flat. Light isn't the humanitarian figure he convinced himself he is, he's a criminal who's only fueling his own ego by killing people, and whether or not they're criminals themselves is irrelevant. There's no ethical justification for what he's doing

Episode 2's main goal is setting up L and once again showing off Light's smartness. It isn't some artificial smartness either as mechanically the Death Note's self destruct drawer is quite sound. I don't even need to mention the incredible last 5 minutes with L already deducing the location of Kira, something that dramatically speeds up the pace of the show. It cuts down on unnecessary filler episodes early on, and guarantees the writing team not get lazy and think on their feet for further episodes. However, I'm not too convinced that the people would have already thought it's some "God Among Men" and that people themselves would share in Kira's God complex. The show does at least bring compelling arguments for human values being different in public and in private. I also especially like how Ryuk says "This L guy's good." reinforcing his intention of just coming to earth for "fun".

Holy crap I don't think I've been this excited or giddy about an anime before, so it's quite literally a death race of who can find who first. I was going to binge watch this show but I think I am gonna watch one episode a day or less, give me time to hypothesize and get excited, I can't wait to see what happens by the end of this series!

That L dude is one smart cookie, he already figured out from just a few clues how Light operates. The whole concealment of the notebook thing Light came up with seemed a bit dumb though, how did he make all those modification to his desk without anyone noticing?
