I see why Band-Maid was selected as Op artist for this show, lol. Pretty cool premiere episode and looks like we’ll be getting our weekly fill of badass music from our ojou-samatachi. Not complaining.

Really thought it was gonna be a CGDCT anime, but out of curiosity in the midseason I watched that 1st episode. The last scene, and only the last scene has me doubting now... thus continuing to the 2nd episode... Please don't disappoint🤘

@LostSpectre Any theme can easily fit into any demographic, because the demographic is the target segmentation for the anime, it don't have anything to do with the theme. My point is that "girls being elegant & academic", suits a shoujo demographic, rather than 18+ men, you feel me?
@Skuvan You're contradicting yourself. Regardless, the demographic just comes down to the source publication, that's it.
If you reply back to me and I never respond, I lost interest and don't care. Sorry about that.

The anime's okay for now, nothing particularly good. Had a few funny moments, and Lilisa's little sister might actually hate her. Her backstory about her father and whatever happened that made her mother remarry is pretty intriguing.

The CGI hair sucked.

Nah, Otoha definitely had a personality change at the ending for sure. 😆

Amen, to that. CGI is super obvious and distracting.

Other than that, this anime seems to be interesting enough. A more "hardcore" Bocchi the Rock.

Girls Band Try...
The only reason I wish "Rock is a Lady's Hobby" to be successful is because that could make Girls Band Cry become more popular retro-actively. Anyhow, Iseri Nina would eat both of these oujosama for breakfast while making undecipherable gremlin noises!

I've read that Otoha's tirade at the end is her kind of complaining about Lilisa's performance as if it were another sort of performance entirely!

I am not sold on the CGI, it feels stiff. It's not the worst I've seen but they look plasticky and the actual movement seems pretty limited. They look like action figures, especially with Lilisa's playing.

It's mocapped from actual performances by members of Band-Maid so blame them, not the CGI. Yeah, it's not perfect by any means, especially the drills, but to see drumming and guitar playing done to exactly match the sounds goes a long way with me.

As I said above, I can live with the CGI. The censorship is a shame and will probably get worse. The subs really do suck, though - guitar guy says something like "you're my daughter alright", subs say "apple doesn't fall far from the tree". Although I have a feeling they may have used dialog from the manga instead of the anime in some places.

@Thoguht Honestly, in my own personal opinion the "Apple doesn't fall far from the tree" line might not be as accurate to what's exactly being said but I do think it's the better subtitle. It gets across the same sentiment as the accurate translation and I also feel that it just flows better from a dialogue perspective.

And in terms of the censorship, I personally think that's better as well. It might not be as explicit as what's shown in the manga but the visuals in my mind are superior. Seeing the vines wrapping around Lilisa as she loses control of the song before biting through them as she powers through in spite of Otoha is a great visual moment. The manga scene felt more generic in comparison.

Also very excited to see BAND-MAID's OP, its been a while since I last heard a song from them (I think Log Horizon 3 was the last time)~!^^3

I do watch a lot of anime but completely overlooked this one. As fate would have it, I am a big fan of Band-Maid who wrote the OP, Ready to Rock, and Ghost Dance that the two played in their duel.

Band-Maid is one of the best rock bands on the planet. The anime used mocap technology. If the animators made a crude representation of the band from that data, I blame the studio.
So give the princesses a try.

That was fucking awesome! Love the Marimite vibes leading into what Lilisa and Otoha were hiding underneath. I did not expect the psycho rant at the end, lol. It was jarring in a good way. The facial expressions were fantastically exaggerated with very nice art. Animation was pretty hit or miss, but it was good enough. That hairdo on Lilisa though, lol. She would fit in well with the Shiki cast. I'm glad this show isn't a Marimite clone because no way I could take that hair seriously, lol. Very fun and yuriful. I was already hyped for this one, but now even more so. Good stuff.

What a kickass first episode!! I love the clash of the ojousama aesthetic present in the first part of the episode clashing with the rock performance in the later half. The lead characters seem really interesting right off the bat, Otoha insulting Lilisa in such a vulgar way at the end was so good haha. The way Lilisa stood silent for a couple moments at the end there was amazing. The animation was surprisingly good too, some of the cgi felt a bit tacky but for the most part it was well animated. Can't wait to see where they go with this.

I can tolerate the hair and the CG, but the rest of the episode was well done. The rock duel was excellent, not only because of the motion capture of Akane and Kanami, but BAND-MAID also contributed the song "Ghost Dance". It make me suspect that we'll see more contributions from the band in upcoming episodes. Which is fine by me. :D

Also poor Lilisa has no idea she's being played.

A solid start to a show where I'm happy to say I have no idea what its going to do next. That ending with the school idol flipping our main MC off and saying she's shit at guitar was hilarious. From what I've seen with this show's humor and the way it paces itself I believe were here for a good time.

Wow yeah, strong start.
Some worries that the pleasant whiplash of ojousama and rock is going to wear thin...
but hopefully they add some emotive twists.

@RobertBobert
Also... I love Maria-sama Ga Miteru.
I wish people would stop using terms like yuribaiting and realize that yuri used to be intertwined closely with sisterhood as much as, if not more than, romance. And to understand this, it's notable to aknowledge the influence of MariMite the novel & anime. It might as well be credited with inventing contemporary yuri as we know it, by exploding a sufficient audience to start magazines that "defined" the yuri genre.

Yuri Shimai and later Yuri Hime chief editor Nakamura Seitarou comments that the advent of the magazines came at the hopes of capturing the Shōjo (Shōsetsu) readership, with the Maria-sama ga Miteru illustrator Hibiki Reine hired for the first issue. “The mook called Yuri shimai is now commonly referred to as the first specialized yuri manga magazine (e.g. Sugino 2008, 78)”(Maser 2015).

It upsets me sometimes when audiences valuate sexuality and romance above all else, and has no room for nuance.

Here's to the hope that it'll further the genre pipeline: Bocchi, MyGo and Girls Band Cry!

@ArtemisSato The original manga, like Strawberry Panic, is a parody of MariMite. I don't quite understand what Kaguya has to do with it, both shows are much older than her and already included the oujo-sama trope.

@Sardinecow Well, in this case I'm not sure if it won't become yuri in the future, which I've said more than once in the discussion of this title, but yeah, even things like yuri subtext have lost their meaning these days, because as soon as people see something homoerotic they immediately scream that it's a full blown yuri. They don't care that even completely straight shows like Naruto or JJK are homoerotic at their core.

Strawberry Panic is a much more visible and popular yuri work in the anglophone fandom. We can attribute it to a number of features, including early On Demand streaming and the degree of homoeroticism (whereas MariMite takes the blunt of widespread criticism as yuri bait, discouraging new viewers). And yes, this is despite the cultural boom that MariMite spawned in Japan. For context, MariMite has sold more copies than Oreimo, Spice and Wolf, and Toradora, and much of ojousama aesthetics have some point of contact with MariMite. In fact, if you revisit the second episode of Strawberry Panic, 5 minutes in, it takes a direct reference to the iconic MariMite line "Your tie is bent": https://youtu.be/s77iyMivgQU

But to clarify, I do not think that MariMite is a bundle of "yuri subtext." It is entirely explicit about the relationships it handles, and its themes of sisterhood. As a friend of mine commented, "watching marimite has also made me notice how i'm much more accepting of relationships that are inbetween friendship and romance between females... in that i'm much slower to try and "define" said relationship as either/or," an approach similar to what Bloom Into You does in the manga. As such, my take is that a work can already be yuri even without homoeroticism.

@Sardinecow I didn't say MariMite was a "yuri subtext". That show literally invented yuri and came before yuri and its subtext even existed, lmao. I talked about yuri subtext in the context of homoeroticism, because people today don't know how homoerotic subtext works, either immediately grasping it as an implication, or reading any moment of friendship as homoerotic subtext. Simply because in their eyes any intimacy between people of the same sex = gay. Calling MariMite yuri bait is silly, because as I said, yuri didn't even exist at that time.

I don't know about the fandom, from what I've seen, a lot of people don't even realize that Panic is a very straight-up parody of yuri tropes and never really takes itself seriously. It's still a good work within the genre, but people seem to think it's a completely serious romantic drama rather than an attempt to stuff as many yuri tropes into a yuri story as the author could. It's as if someone was trying to sell you "The Eminence in Shadow" as a completely serious thriller.

Let's see how it goes
I need somebody who can love me at my worst
No, I'm not perfect, but I hope you see my worth
'Cause it's only you, nobody new, I put you first
And for you, girl, I swear I'll do the worst

If you stay forever, let me hold your hand
I can fill those places in your heart no else can
Let me show you love, oh, I don't pretend, yeah
I'll be right here, baby, you know I'll sink or swim

Dunno what I expected Otoha's true nature to be, but I sure as hell wasn't expecting that 😳 The way she ripped Lilisa to shreds over her guitar skills was borederline evil!
