@LostSpectre Any theme can easily fit into any demographic, because the demographic is the target segmentation for the anime, it don't have anything to do with the theme. My point is that "girls being elegant & academic", suits a shoujo demographic, rather than 18+ men, you feel me?

The anime's okay for now, nothing particularly good. Had a few funny moments, and Lilisa's little sister might actually hate her. Her backstory about her father and whatever happened that made her mother remarry is pretty intriguing.

The CGI hair sucked.

I've read that Otoha's tirade at the end is her kind of complaining about Lilisa's performance as if it were another sort of performance entirely!


It's mocapped from actual performances by members of Band-Maid so blame them, not the CGI. Yeah, it's not perfect by any means, especially the drills, but to see drumming and guitar playing done to exactly match the sounds goes a long way with me.

The subs really do suck, though - guitar guy says something like "you're my daughter alright", subs say "apple doesn't fall far from the tree". Although I have a feeling they may have used dialog from the manga instead of the anime in some places.

Strawberry Panic meets GBC and Kaguya-sama - first episode was absolutely hilarious to me personally, like I haven't been entertained like this by a show in ages.

@ArtemisSato The original manga, like Strawberry Panic, is a parody of MariMite. I don't quite understand what Kaguya has to do with it, both shows are much older than her and already included the oujo-sama trope.

@Sardinecow Well, in this case I'm not sure if it won't become yuri in the future, which I've said more than once in the discussion of this title, but yeah, even things like yuri subtext have lost their meaning these days, because as soon as people see something homoerotic they immediately scream that it's a full blown yuri. They don't care that even completely straight shows like Naruto or JJK are homoerotic at their core.

Strawberry Panic is a much more visible and popular yuri work in the anglophone fandom. We can attribute it to a number of features, including early On Demand streaming and the degree of homoeroticism (whereas MariMite takes the blunt of widespread criticism as yuri bait, discouraging new viewers). And yes, this is despite the cultural boom that MariMite spawned in Japan. For context, MariMite has sold more copies than Oreimo, Spice and Wolf, and Toradora, and much of ojousama aesthetics have some point of contact with MariMite. In fact, if you revisit the second episode of Strawberry Panic, 5 minutes in, it takes a direct reference to the iconic MariMite line "Your tie is bent": https://youtu.be/s77iyMivgQU

But to clarify, I do not think that MariMite is a bundle of "yuri subtext." It is entirely explicit about the relationships it handles, and its themes of sisterhood. As a friend of mine commented, "watching marimite has also made me notice how i'm much more accepting of relationships that are inbetween friendship and romance between females... in that i'm much slower to try and "define" said relationship as either/or," an approach similar to what Bloom Into You does in the manga. As such, my take is that a work can already be yuri even without homoeroticism.
