Do not microwave whole cartons of milk.

I enjoyed the episode, but I am starting to deeply crave more character development for Osanai. I hope that comes next episode.

Despite their skillful staging of this episode about hot cocoa, it doesn't change the fact that we watched a dull mystery about making hot cocoa. I hope there's a plot twist soon and that they don't drag on with these Detective Conan style episodes about trivial cases.

How is this shit even more pretentious and more boring than Hyouka? I know it's from the same author but wow, this was absolutely about nothing. How did he make the cocoa... Truly peak KINO.

Thought the episode about going to be about the robbery but ended up being about cocoa. Visuals were nice but was kinda boring. Sherlock holmes for mundane things but overall I am liking it

I very much enjoyed this episode. The whole "mystery of the hot chocolate" was an intentionally laid out mental challenge by Kengo to push the MC towards investigating things again, instead of "becoming ordinary". Kengo seems like he's just acting like a jerk to get a reaction out of the MC. I really like how they were showing him just "minding his own business" in the next room while the sister and MCs were trying to figure out the mystery. He totally knew what was going on and was completely trolling the other characters, but smart enough not to directly confront them with the mystery. This speaks to how smart Kengo is also, even though he he acts like a jerk. The chocolate "smile" on his face after the mystery is solved was the best. I personally like to think this was intentional.

Just a really interesting mix of characters and interactions, even if nothing seems to be going on right now.

Once again the only part of the show I liked was the “Sherlock Holmes” style investigation, the rest of the show is still pretty strange.

And what is with these background changes in the middle of the scene?
Can someone tell me if that is an artistic choice?
Note: I don’t lazily watch 3-5 episodes, biasedly compare to other anime, or unfairly judge by surface level similarities. With every anime I start, I watch the entire series, both Japanese Sub & English Dub, then judge each anime based on what they present, to give an honest and fair rating.

seems very lackluster so far? despite having read the synopsis i still have no clue what the show is even about or what's happening. the visuals are great but that doesn't mean much if they don't have a good story to back them up

I like the direction, characters and voice acting, but animation is really hard on my eyes. Too much of traced/rotoscoped 3DCG. It looks just bad. Some shots are just plain awful and makes me remember flash animation.
Characters facial expressions have super soulless robotic look in many scenes.
I really can’t believe that many people are unironically praising the visual part. Or say something like „one of the best looking anime in this season”, I mean you can't be serious.
Even most of background art looks like soulless 3D renders (with few exceptions).
You literally can’t compare it to something like Atri, Oshi no Ko, Tokidoki Bosotto Russia-go de Dereru Tonari no Alya-san, Gimai Seikatsu, Make Heroine ga Oosugiru! or Mayonaka Punch or other series of this season that have actual great visuals and animation.

I can't get past how dumb and boring everything brought up is. Which is killing me because this anime is gorgeous and cinematicly beautiful but my god. Wasting 20 minutes of my life on a hot cocoa episode made me just about lose my mind. Was waiting for the punchline that they are actually aliens or SOMETHING. 1 more episode otherwise I'm dropping out of this mundane travesty.

"They criticized me for letting my bike get stolen." is WILD. WTF Japan?

Ain't no way i just watch a mystery solving of how to make a good cocoa without getting the sink wet. LMAO
Also fcking psychopath Kengo putting the entire carton of milk into microwave and then put it back into a fridge?
Put this dude in a jail right now.

Animation and directing?

I shouldn't have watched this epsiode right after completing a rewatch of The Apothecary Diaries.

Due to the nature of the mystery presented here, I can't help but agreeing with some folks who feel like this episode was watching a bunch of eccentrics making a giant mountain out of a molehill.

@Atavistic Oreki and Chitanda would have made a mystery like this far more engaging than what we actually got in the end.

Interesting that some people say it was boring while others are loving it. Personally I'm in the second group.

I think it's in the direction. Despite it being an ordinary topic the way it was presented had me fully immersed in the "mystery." Sure, they could have asked Kengo, but that's less fun, and since his sister presented it as a "challenge," then asking would have been admitting defeat.

It's interesting to hear a little bit more about what Kobato was like before, I imagine we'll get the same for Osanai later.
@SawronZXZ You are right.

The issue I have with both mysteries so far is they require the culprit to be a psychopath. Microwaving a milk carton and sticking it back in the fridge is harder to swallow than most fantasy settings. And how am I supposed to appreciate the oddness of the main pair if everyone around them is bizarre too? I do really appreciate the little unnecessary details in the animation. Having the door open a bit again cause it was slammed is one of those very real things so few animators would bother with. I think I'll give this one more.

20 minutes of Osanai, Jogorou, and Chisato investigating on how Kengo make good hot cocoas. LMFAOOOOOOOOOOOOO and after Episode 1 really doing a great job of hooking me in.
My patience felt like it was being tested just having to sit thru all dat mane on the 2nd episode. It better have some focus on the romance aspects later in the episodes. Ima just wait till the later episodes come out for me to judge this fairly.

It's Not much but I like the characterisation for Jougorou in this episode, he has this outer persona of being as normal as possible and I can see a three dimensional character with compelling inner conflict and potential for some good change/development. Interested to to see more of his backstory and relationships with the other characters as well.

Also interesting plot with all of the cocoa shenanigans going on, never expected the suspense and surprises of this episode to be about that.

Really nice episode, I don't know what is it about these type of shows that really captivates me, you might think the premise is quite absurd and kind of stupid, but it isn't blatantly trying to be an absurd show, it somehow feels cozy in a way. And I guess their secret is just that they're trying to be normal people? I still don't quite get that, maybe they ponder over absurd stuff like that and they're trying to be normal and avoid overthinking stuff. Well whatever it might be I'm really enjoying this show.

Nice head cannon buddy, wish this was true, but no matter how many times I watch that scenes I don't think this is true.
Despite being only some 5 meter away from them, despite the door being only half closed, despite his sister almost shouting sometimes, he didn't reacted like the payed any attention at all.
On the contrary, the episode and this mystery points to Kengo being a simpleton unable to complex thoughts and plots.

I only watched the scene once, but for exactly the reasons you point out, it is highly unlikely he's just an unaware simpleton completely oblivious to the discussion behind him. He is within listening distance, with the door half open and his sister clearly agitated and almost shouting at him because they can't figure out "how" he made the hot chocolate.

To top it off if he's really just a totally simpleton unable to come up with complex thoughts and plots, I don't think he would "by chance" make the hot chocolate in such an unusual way, then specifically mention the method of making good hot chocolate to the MC. I may be wrong, but I still think he is intentionally trolling them. I guess we'll see as the series plays out.

All the small details are amazing. Like 5:42 immediately gave me more insight into Kengo as a character or how he licks the chocolate at 20:23. It's crazy how fast time past. 20 minutes barely felt like 5 or 10. I just watched an episode of them figuring out how he made hot chocolate. Still my man really so lazy he microwaved the whole milk carton wtf and told a way to make delicious hot chocolate but it was just instructions on the packet lol.

I had so much fun just following the simple mystery of them figuring out how he made some hot chocolate lol.

I also just realized he ate the cake center to outside wtf. WHO DOES THAT! Kengo might be a psychopath. Seriously who does that?

Maybe he actually is the joker?

I have another theory of how to make the hot cocoa with just 3 cups and 1 spoon:
1. Put the cocoa powder in each of the three cups
2. Add a little of milk (as kengo said) in each cup, and make the paste
3. Add more milk
4. Put the cups in the microvawe

Tadaa! Three good cups of hot cocoa.

I have a question: did they really made the cups of hot cocoa and wasted that much of milk and cocoa powder or it was just the visual representation of what they were assuming?

If is the first one, why didn’t they noticed the milk was hot since the beginning?

This anime confuse me

Why would the school administration blame Yuki for her bike getting stolen? What, she purposely left it there with cakes in the basket so the delinquent would purposely throw her cakes on the floor and steal the bike? Do they think she wanted her bike to get stolen?

Why didn't they just ask the guy how he made the hot chocolate? But the fact that he heated up the milk in the milk carton was diabolic.

Is Yuki the reason why Kobato changed? It seems like he's trying to be not as outgoing or normal which is pretty lame. Interesting episode though. Kinda boring though, I ended up falling asleep. Buuut the animation is beautiful. I love the scenery and sunsets. I just don't get the premise of the anime. Are Yuki and Kobato dating?
