Mari's sunburn! and mom and sis reaction to it!! I'm surprised that Megumi didn't accompany mom and sis to have a chat with Mari, but perhaps the rift between them is still too deep.

that's the different between megumi and hinata "friends". i think megumi didnt come because she think she didnt deserve to come, after all she done. meanwhile hinata friend are the opposite.

This is the first episode where I have truly enjoyed this show. I have been sticking through it since I'm so close to finishing, but this episode really made me feel the love that everyone else seems to have for it. Really good episode.

PS Did anyone else notice how the opening has Kimari's face like that in a bunch of the scenes lol.

As soon as Kimari took off her mask, I knew that was going to be referenced. There's actually a lot of scenes in the opening that would have 'happened' in the show proper, like Kimari's face and the jump-roping competition. I'm still wondering if they'll have an 'onsen scene' or something in the remaining episodes.

So, I've just realized what was it that I was missing in these past two episodes: It's the sense of progression. In each episode from 1 to 9, they were closer to their goal while developing on the characters. Now that has stopped to focus just on the girls, and while I like their development I also miss that sense of excitement from the previous episodes. That's why I think this Antarctica arc feels somehow weaker compared to the journey itself. Hope that will improve on the last two episodes.

I understand what you're saying, but personally I've felt a sense of anticipation for eventually reaching the place where Shirase's mother died. They refer to it every episode recently. I think of the recent episodes as the group becoming strong enough to eventually deal with it, when they get there.
...but then again, I unironically like Warau Salesman.

Hinata & Shirase's outbursts were so powerful. Might not agree with Shirase's bluntness but being honest with herself is quite something.
It's like most of them have lots of issues including the girl waiting on 'Yu kun'. Lol dat mahjong.

I freaking love this series, omg.

Zero regrets scoring this a 10/10, zero regrets putting it in my fave list.

Hinata's background was basically Hibike Euphonium, but they took things to the next level with Shirase's speech/rant which was incredible.

This was honestly the weakest episode in the whole show. The drama was extremely predictable the second "friends from the track team" was brought up, there were no twists or turns, it was the same story you'll find in countless other shows and it just made me want to skip past it.

It makes me cringe a bit, you have these fantastic girls and all these great episodes, but this is the best Hinata gets? That's a real shame.

The moment you focus on the trope itself and not how it supported the episode, you lose. Pls don't be that kind of speedwatcher.

Being a speedwatcher sounds dull, but I can't really choose what I do and don't focus on. After 10 stellar episodes, this one just didn't appeal to me in the slightest.

Such strong words, yeah let them live along with their guilt. Friends who call themselves friends just for self satisfaction are just mere hypocrites.

These four girls are now finally fleshed out. So time to focus now on the expedition, and the reminiscing on the events about the previous expedition, it seems that the book at the end signals it.

Character development in this show destroys most other SoL stuff I've seen by a very, very long shot.

That's not to say, something like Yuru Camp isn't good. It is great, but it simply cannot be better than this.

In almost any other season, Yuru Camp would've run away with AoTS easily; it gives us such comfiness and happiness whenever it's on.

Then we have this show. Masters of emotional manipulation, to say the least. Whole gamut of emotions within one episode alone; and they've managed to do that for 11 straight episodes.

The rewatchability value of this series is through the roof. I've already gone through all prior episodes multiple times, and almost each time I pick up something new. Yuzu's "friendship" comment is part of it, but then when you go back and watch the Singapore episode (where Shirase and Hinata were going at it at the airport counter about the ticket changes), you suddenly have a better appreciation of their dynamics; and Hinata's arc this episode just feels all the more powerful.

The only way this series doesn't go to the top of my all time favourites list, is if Takako comes back as a zombie.

These girls are definitely coming back only because Hinata now is on TV and stuff. They could have said sorry while she was still working in the store. And also, they called themselves her friends instead of (ex)teammates. Anyway, Shirase continues being best girl. But I love all four of them. <3

As someone who was a big track runner in high school, I totally understood Hinata's situation and the context. I can only think of one guy on my team that was mad about one underclassman doing better than him, but he was more mad at himself, but it did complicate their relationship a little bit (but he got over it). Luckily on my team though, we didn't discriminate against the underclassmen in this way and I was never discriminated against when I was a freshman and sophomore. I've been in both positions as the upcoming underclassman that has a lot of potential and promise, and as the veteran senior competing against the new underclassman that had a lot of potential. But at the end of the day, my team's philosophy is that we wanted the team to do great and we had to encourage everyone to do their best, there was no "I deserve to win this because I'm older!", we wanted the best people for the job to be on the team.

Sure there's some frustration with a new star rising up, but I always took it as that when I'm gone, the team is going to be thriving and we're going to continue to win when I'm gone, which made me feel good. Also I never got frustrated with the underclassmen getting better because they needed me to relay my experience and knowledge to them, it felt good to help them and work hard together throughout the season. The only times it ever got testy is when we were picking captains....

But it's terrible what happened to Hinata as those upperclassmen were total pricks and just wanted their fame on the team despite not being the best and her "friends" didn't stand up to her and completely threw her under the bus and left her out to dry when she needed it most. Then coming back for a half-assed apology doesn't make it any better. They should have been begging for forgiveness and acknowledging what they did was wrong, but to think they thought everything was just going to be normal after what happened and what they did is just naive and stupid, they deserved to get shit on by Shirase and hopefully that'd make them think twice before trying to do something like that again.

hithummah said:
this why this anime is the best CGDCT of the seasons. The girls don't follow down into archetypes, the chemistry between them is realistic and genuine. Every girl gets to shine with both strength and weakness. Friend ship of the youth and no force romance and yuri bait, for I really hate anime with yaoi/yuri overtones.

Shirase is best girl, not only in this anime but of the season

I 100% agree with this. The characters and interactions between them feel genuine and I too dislike yuri bait when its obvious that there's going to be no yuri. Some shows do it worse than others, but at least in this show, I haven't really seen any bait and I appreciate that.

Alright, mahjong analysis time! I'd love to see Shirase up against the Saki girls. If she has a power, it might be the same power as Nanpo Kazue, or she might have an affinity for souths.

I appreciate the amount of detail put into this. They even have the rinshanpai dropped, although it should be the other side of the wall.

Also, I'm pretty sure "Not against the daughter of Gin and Takako..." should have been translated as "Not against Gin and the daughter of Takako...". I can see how the translators would interpret it as they did, though, because the Japanese is "Gin to Takako no musume ..."—you'd either group it as "(Gin to Takako) no musume" ("the daughter of Gin and Takako") or "Gin to (Takako no musume)" ("Gin and the daughter of Takako"). I'm inclined to say the second is more correct.

Yes, it's most likely a translation error. In the Spanish subs it says indeed "Gin and the daughter of Takako". Even if I'm on the side of those who'd want to ship them, but in absence of any explicit proof it's only theory.

Well, it could actually be understood both ways, but since their relationship is just a theory, it makes more sense to translate it that way. Besides, in episode 9 Gin says she has no children, so Shirase is just Takako's daughter anyway.

In the beginning I think the show really pulled it off. But at this stage. I wish it would slow down and take a deep breath. You don't need to try and have an emotional, bawl your eyes out scene every episode. I also get they're trying to fit a lot of story into 13 episodes. But I digress.

I did still really like this episode though. Shirase telling off the bullies at the end. Was the slightest bit cringe and overdone for me. But I've really enjoyed her and Hinata is burgeoning friendship. And how I feel it's deepened the latter character. I also have to give the show props. For masterfully including a bit of levity whenever things get a little too heart on sleeve. Yuzuki getting excited over the display of friendship was hella cute and broke the tension in the scene.

If things follow like normal I guess next episode will focus on Kimari. And her development now that they're in Antarctica. And then we'll finally see Shirase deal with her mom's death in full. (Other people have commented on this. But God I hope she's not still alive somehow. That'd be too cheesy). Looking forward to seeing this show stick the landing.

great emotional ep. and while the episode was a little light on the comedy we got some different things out of it. We got learn a lot more about hinata and why she really wasn't in school. We got to see the girls doing field work. We also know that the crew leaders are focused on going back to shirase's mothers disappearance site. we also got to see shirase overcome her camera-phobia to tell them thots off. a lot of stuff crammed into one ep. really, really enjoyed it.

Only thing more i could have wanted was a little comedy, and more of that camping scene.

-so i was taking a break from the whole watching anime thing to play ace attorney but people told me to start watching yorimoi again right this moment so here i am
-FeelsMariMan
-FeelsHinataMan
-oh man that scene where hinata threw a tantrum outside was super FeelsHinataMan
-even more so that they don't outright explain it
-and once again even more so with all of shirase's efforts to try and pry for information and hinata deflecting
-the new tournament arc of saki is looking great
-also this episode seems super heavy compared to the previous episodes
-FeelsHinataMan
-the next season of yuru camp looks pretty good
-yeah the landscape does look pretty deserted desserty
-mari posing for the satellite photo and very obviously missing shirase luring hinata out was pretty funny
-the scene at the water hole was pretty poignant as it is, they didn't need to put in a piano version of the OP which is the type of thing i'm a huge sucker for
-man everyone was getting into that roast session at the end
-also "fuck you" mode shirase is always great
-i think i love this show

Now that they're in Antarctica it seems like the whole expedition stuff is taking the back seat to just straight up character development. That's not necessarily a bad thing per se, but it just wasn't what I expected the Antarctic portion of the show to be like. I thought from an execution standpoint that this episode was pretty much on the same level as the last one. If there's one thing I love, it's hiding key details from the viewers, doing a bunch of things that don't make immediate sense, and then doing a big reveal in a sort of eureka moment that makes everything seem a whole lot clearer. In particular, the entire scene where Hinata was smacking around a pile of snow was just super heartbreaking, even without the context behind it.

It stood out to me for a couple reasons, one of them being Yuka Iguchi's voice acting and the other one being Hinata's and Shirase's facial expressions. Yuka Iguchi just absolutely nailed the voice acting in that scene, particularly the initial scream and the heavy breathing when she calms down after throwing the bucket. Those two sounds alone just ripped my heart out and stomped on it because of all of the raw emotion put into them, even during the first time I saw the scene. The scream, in particular, seemed like it started out as anger and changed into a mix of sadness and frustration, and I happened to think that was pretty impressive given the time frame. The scream alone got me to feel bad for her, but the breathing at the end of her little outburst just pretty much destroyed me. That's mostly because her last two exhalations were super shaky, and I interpreted that as actively trying to hold back tears. I actually really liked that because the breaths themselves gave off some pretty significant information without any words being said, and that's a pretty clear indication of the VA's skill. The only other time I have ever taken notice of any voice acting in a positive light during an emotional scene was Marina Inoue during Owarimonogatari.

The facial expressions of both Hinata and Shirase during the scene were also super expressive, with Hinata looking like she was on the verge of crying the entire time, and Shirase looking pretty concerned for her. Not much to say about these, but they complemented the voice work pretty well. I don't think it's a stretch to say that this scene is easily my favorite in the show so far. While it pretty much stomped on my heart, Shirase's unyielding efforts to try and get to the bottom of everything was super heartwarming, and while Shirase was arguably my least favorite main girl prior to this episode, her actions made that distinction really hard to make.

Not much to say about the rest of the episode other than how I also happened to like the broadcast near the end because of the whole message behind it was wholly contained within the spirit of the series thus far. Hinata also ended up finding the strength to actually cry it out, not out of grief, but out of either happiness or thankfulness, and that was just pretty cathartic given the stuff that happened in the rest of the episode.

I really don't know how they managed to pull it off, but they managed to top episode 10 so I have pretty high hopes for the rest of the show.

There's the Yoriime style that I always complained about in past ED threads, at this point I'm just rolling with it

It was all about Hinata's character study this time. I could relate to what she was going through if I was in her boots. But Shirase explained the feelings perfectly.

I'm so jealous of their friendship. Shirase is wonderful. And Hinata <3
