So just a heads up, what do you think is the best anime for the season? This? Or something else.

Seems like one of the best so far but we'll have to see. Hopefully it doesn't become a trainwreck by the end =/

It's definitely my favorite. From the first ep onward, this anime has really grabbed my attention.

Judging so far it seem to be the best, though I haven't seen the new FMA due to not having finished the old one.

At least it's way better than the hyped K-ON (which I more or less like nevertheless).

Oh, totally the best anime this season.

Merits:

+ incredible art
+ absorbing characters
+ interesting, different storyline
+ actual love from the creators and effort on their parts

Downsides:

- not enough episodes

Amidst all the crappy crap this season presented, this is hands-down the best anime right now.

The only competitor is K-ON! and NOT for its story or originality, but K-ON! wins for being the best entertainment out this season, and fans have grabbed on to it fast and hard. Higashi no Eden? Long time since a new anime has impressed me this much.

Well, I'm after first episode but I can definitely tell that this anime art wise is pretty bad. Lame shoujo-like character design and CG rubbed in your face. Hope plot can compensate for it.

Bad? How so? Have you looked at the backgrounds for this anime? The scene with them in the airport alone, if you look at one of the reflective surfaces on the wall while they were on the escalator, there was a mirror image of a sign from across the room.

That's attention to detail if I ever saw it. The colours are amazing, and the character design is simplistic, not "lame".

Well, you can always argue about chara design. That's always a matter of personal taste. Personally I like it, because it's not your everyday generic stuff.
Backgrounds, animation and details are amazing and the CG is subtle.

Seriously, if you think this is "pretty bad" then you really have no idea.

Yes. Best of the season. Though I haven't seen much. Cross Game is a close second, based on the first two episodes (entertainment wise, that is). Higepiyo is also up there.

All that needs to be said. ^^

The art IS awesome. I especially like the OP and the ED! Too bad it's only 11 episodes though.

Well, we'll just have to wait and see, plotwise at least. But it's interesting to see different people's opinions on why this anime was great, with good reasoning behind it.

I personally thought the animation was rather good, things were well drawn. Graphically, this anime is quite a spectacle. Yeah, I liked Cross Game too, and the new FMA I suppose does deserve its popularity, although the whole FMA franchise was one large disappointment for me. K-ON's good as well but that's just my brainless side talking.

so far....easily
but I haven't followed Phantom Requiem as closely as I had planned too
so unless that bests it, my vote goes to Higashi no Eden

GREAT series! Best of the year, no competion! And also probably one of the most unique anime I've seen, along with Ergo Proxy. Awesomeness incarnated. I'm a big, big fan of this show! :)

Best of this year (so far)? Maybe... but no competition? No, just no. Eden has been great and is my favorite from this season but on the year, there are other things like Clannad - After Story (which ended this year), Zoku Natsume Yuujinchou, Hajime no Ippo 2, and Toradora that atleast make this arguable.

But I think it's still too early to pass judgement. This story could still be a train wreck and with 4 episodes + a movie left, the characters could really leave a lot to be desired (and probably will -- especially the supporting cast). Based on animation alone, this series isn't even the best this season. Basquash crushes this show based on only animation.

And again, I'm not bashing this show. I'm just saying this topic was a bit prematurely made.

Started out as the best this season for me, but lost most of its appeal after 3 or so eps. Still in my top 5 this season though, and still way better then FMA2 and K-On, which don't even make my top 15 this season, out of the 20 I watch...

Definitely better than FMA if it was longer IMO.

Even if all unrealistic shite breaks loose I still love it.

Unless if it's incredibly, beyond-belief, border-lining insulting unbelievable shite then I'll still love it

Hmmm just have to wait and see how it all ends I suppose. I do hope it doesn't become a major disaster at the end of the series, but so far I enjoy this series. The new FMA isn't really my thing, I think its a bit too repetitive.

Wow... marathoned from start to caught-up today.

If this is the best of the year, 2009's a shitty year. Don't get me wrong. The premise is fantastic and the art's gorgeous... but the execution is complete and utter shit. This is one indulgant mindfuck that will most likely have no resolution, especially considering how the series loves to rush important plot points while dragging out menial ones.

Right now, it's an 8 at best from me. If it ends like I think it will, it will get a 7.

WTF is going on with anime these days ><

Yep, I think so too. This is the best anime not only for the season, but and for the year.
The story is interesting /it somehow resembles me of Death Note, maybe cuz of the "fatal game" element/, the op and the music too and the animation and the characters are unique!!!

10/10

You know, while I found myself enjoying Higashi no Eden enough to marathon it all in one shot last night, by the time it was over I wasn't too sure of what I had just watched. As ambitious a tale it seemed to be, there were far too many plotholes and heavily relied upon yet weak plot devices for such a worldly thriller. From beginning to end, there are big gaping questions with no answers. For example, if Selecao is a group of selected individuals whose purpose is to save Japan, what reason did Akira have to find himself naked and waving a gun in front of the White House? How did that have anything to do with him wiping his memory, or the events that lead him to that conclusion? This isn't even addressed through the course of the show, and its only purpose seemed to be to both introduce him to Saki and set the Bourne Identity-esque tone. Thinking on it more, there were constantly ridiculous things happening just in that first episode: English-speaking Americans somehow understanding things spoken in Japanese, a man on the street giving Akira his pants (and Akira had not yet figured out how to make requests with his phone), and a large black woman blushing at the size of a slender Japanese boy's penis.

Okay, sort of joking about that last one. But everything else...!

Then of course there are the godlike powers of the phones and Juiz, and such a lack of clarity about the nature of such a powerful device and how such extraordinary and clandestine things are made to happen is pushed so far by the end of the show that I can't help but be reminded of Elfen Lied, where all these big ideas suddenly felt completely hollow. Still, there were interesting things about it, most importantly in what it had to say about society, both post-WW2 and post-9/11, not to mention this whole 'NEET' thing. And, of course, being riddled with references to films like Dawn of the Dead was quite endearing to me... but ultimately I find myself left with a feeling that certain significant aspects of this show were barely thought out.

In any case, I will be watching the upcoming movies. More than anything, I'd like to see more of our Ms. Johnny Hunter. But really...? If this is the best that anime has to offer in 2009, I will be spending a lot of time catching up on older shows.
