THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.

Lute is such a nice kid, always willing to help others, including other kids.

Speaking of kids, not everyone in this series gets suitable living conditions. I guess it's not surprising that orphans exists in the franchise. Those orphans barely have anything to eat..and it's pretty harsh reality.

Another Saturday means more Maine :) I’m glad this show is supposedly finished so we don’t have to worry about any delays

Ok what the fuck. The church really thought locking orphans up and feeding them like animals was a humane and efficient way of dealing with the situation? For an organisation that’s so high and mighty to be having human beings live like that is insane.

Of course no way Maine would be ok with that. The idea to have them all come work for her is great

The high priest is actually a really nice guy it seems he just has to put on certain airs in public. I wouldn’t be surprised if he himself actually wanted to do something about the orphanage, which is why he didn’t have any issue with Maine taking on the responsibility

Their conversation in the private room was a lot more genuine and heartfelt than the one in front of retainers and other blue robes and we saw how he really does care for Maine’s success

Another great episode. Went by fast as usual. One of the biggest testaments to this series is how often you forget it’s even an Isekai. It really breaks most of the common moulds of the genre and succeeds in focusing on its world building, character development and narrative. Everything is so well paced, it almost feels like every episode is a day you’re spending with the cast and seeing them grow.

Really heartfelt episode with Main helping out those orphans. Knew immediately that she would help them once she went down there with Gil. It was pretty traumatic to see children in such a state, I'm not too prone to care about someone else's kids but seeing that one cling to Main blue robe just breaks your heart. It's good that she still hasn't figured out all of noble society yet.

Despite her efforts Main is still not quite a noble woman with those manners and decorum. Sort of barging into see Ferdinand and mouthing off to him despite the other noble and retainers being present. Delicacy isn't one of Main strong suits, she definitely is still that downtown girl. Loved the conversation she had with Ferdinand again in the secret room. Been waiting to see where his place is since the very first episode when we see him look inside Main head with that tiara looking piece.

Anyways, very sweet how Main reasoning is because she can't read with all those orphans suffering. Of course it's much more than that but she's learning subtlety with her emotions like Ferdinand wants. Teared up like Gil did when Main was appointed Orphanage Director. Adding them on as a branch of her studio, this girl is too sweet.

Ohhhh, this was a wholesome episode. It's so great to see Main caring for those orphans. They weren't living at all!
Also Main quickly needs to get some manners and how to act as a noble because that could become her pitfall. Hope we get to see some more conversations between Main and Head Priest as I'm curious what the reasons are he joined the church.

The way the church deals with the orphans is disgusting and I'm glad that Myne is now taking care of them. From this episode, we understand that the Head Priest is actually a nice guy.

Another brilliant end card. I really can't get enough of them.

Something tells me that Maine is going to have an orphan army soon enough. I wonder if she'll have enough shampoo for everyone who works for her. More and more people are showing silky hair as the story moves forward. That's an incredible detail from the animators!

Superb episode! I can sleep easy knowing that Maine has done it for the time being. So wholesome, those last few seconds before the ED...

Seriously, it's horrifying to see the treatment that these poor orphans have to go through in what is supposedly a "sacred" place. No wonder it took a toll on Maine too, it'd scar most people in the first place.

I'm glad that the Head Priest ended up accepting the offer after all. In turn, I'm really curious on his circumstances leading up to being the Head Priest too. I feel like these two together could just make a difference here for the better.

Benno-san and Lutz chipping in with ideas and setting up the platform (realism issues, I suppose) and Delia, on the other hand, keeping this under wraps is really nice to see!

I'm looking forward to what's next and I'm hoping this isn't going to set off some irks to follow through immediately. Maine better get the noble act prepared before it's too late...

Maine saw the hard reality of what the orphanage is like and I am glad to see she has a plan set in motion to better that place!

The head priest has also been a bit of an important role this episode for accepting Maine's request to become the Orphanage Director, I am kinda glad that he and Maine are both on the same wavelength when it comes to the state of the church, but since he was raised as a Noble, he doesn't show his concerns at all. Maine has a lot to learn on that aspect still... I am really curious to hear what the head priest's reasons are for joining the church!

Noticed it straight away that Maine's retainers all have this silky smooth hair now as well, just as you said a lovely touch of detail! They gotta carry this through with the kids in the orphanage as well!

I’m liking how this show makes the characters work to implement changes. In a lot of other shows, the MC would have just gotten angry, thrown open the basement door, and magically had enough money to give them all food and clothes, and everything would have been sunshine and roses. Bookworm actually takes into account all the hierarchy and long-term consequences, and that’s pretty different and cool. Good job!

Hm, compared to the actual horror upon reading the description in the light novel, this episode went fairly light on the portrayal of the orphanage. I suppose it did what it could, with some of the details clearly not suitable for a TV show, but it still felt a bit lackluster.

I think what lessened the impact here was mainly that the room actually looked semi-ordered, and that the orphans were -- though clearly starving -- actually capable of just normally sitting around and walking. In the novel, Myne fainted upon seeing the orphans, who were quite literally too weak to stand, crawl on the ground -- with merely some hay strewn about -- towards her, barely able to speak.

For those interested, here's an excerpt in spoiler tags (though not really a spoiler, since it's the material covered in this episode):

Yeah, the room looked pretty clean compared to how it was described in the novel. But I guess it would have been too gross / repulsing to show it in the anime.

I was also pretty surprised that when Main is talking to the head priest the first time, they added

They really toned this part down and left some important information out.

A lot of the orphans are actually children of the grey-robe priestesses (like Delia) that have offered their "Flowers" to nobles and got "Fat Bellies".

The church have been burying that dirty little secret in the orphanage.

Adaptation is still good but like the previous episode they've glossed things over and made Mynes progression seem a little to contrived.

There's a lot of extra details in the novel, since they can take the time to explain things way more.
I strongly suggest you begin reading from the beginning of the first arc, to get all those extra details, like for example about the economy / merchant transaction, which are pretty nice, or the interactions with the different characters which are much more fleshed out.
Also, please note that the novel is already ahead of what this second season will cover (from the rythm they're taking, they will only cover half of the second arc, and the novel is already released in english for 3/4 of the second arc).

It is definitely worth reading. The anime is nice, but at the same time it kind of is only a summary; the degree to which the world and charcters are fleshed out in the novels is an order of magnitude above that. Not really the fault of the anime, mind you, they are using their runtime in reasonably efficient manner, but much of the intricate worldbuilding, the thoughts of the characters etc. gets lost in the process, and it is a real treat to see how well-thought-out the story is as you slowly uncover more and more of the world.

Yeah I really don't see why that addition was necessary, the subtle threat of non-obvious spies works better in my opinion. At the same time, I recall it being mentioned that such brazen criticism of the High Priest could literally threaten their lives, driving the point home about how tight the rope is that needs to be walked.

I also missed the mention of the rather important fact that the room being restricted to those with a certain amount of mana effectively makes it the private chambers of Ferdinand and Myne because the other blue priests have so little mana (note the mana shortage), tying in to later developments about the politics around the temple.

Mayne at first was reluctant to step up and shoulder the burden of taking care of the entire orphanage and sacrificing her dream of producing her own books.
"I won't have personal funds anymore..."
Helping the orphans meant putting her own dreams on hold indefinitely which weighed heavily on her. It was shown in this episode how much Mayne is also growing as person when she's realizing that there's more to life than just being around books, inventing stuff and accumulating money.
"Manga readers are annoying, all they do is complain or spoil the anime we discuss in an anime forum.
They should really do their whining at manga forums.

yeah, compared to others this episode felt kinda rushed to me, wasn't expecting the orphanage terrible conditions to be in the anime, but a lot of other stuff got skipped over aswell. It also felt like she went from choosing not to help, to help in no time, which felt weird.

The living conditions of the maligned in the Temple just got a lot more worse with the unbaptized children of the orphanage, and for the escaped grey-robes Delia and Gil, it was an experience they don''t want to remember.

To help or not to help, Myne has a troubled heart, because helping is part-self, part-others in situations like these. Such big plans have to be planned well and in accordance, and with the help of Lutz, Fran and Gil with Benno's supervision (with the exception of Delia due to her close contact with the High Priest), the plan is underway to convert her existing studio for the orphanage kids.

As expected, with the High Priest and his heavily guarded followers, the Head Priest has to keep her in check. Aside from getting that position, it seems that there's more to the Head Priest being in the same background as Myne...

And who could forget that Lutz is acting like a husband to weave over Myne hugging him. Still best boy.

Actually, in that world, they don't consider children human until they have had their baptism. Probably because the child death rate is so high (and not just in the church...). And so, the baptism is getting the child to be recognized by the gods and the country as both a human and a citizen. Until then, you're nothing but a burden...
Also, remember the church is seriously lacking ressources. In normal times, the church gets money from the blue robes priests families. But since the number of priests went down a lot, the church is seriously lacking funds at the moment, and therefore cannot feed everyone (since obviously the nobles won't cut on their comfort).

anybody else wanna talk about child labor? how about child prostitution?

you are lucky you have rights. but then again having rights means losing other opportunities like actually having a good guy take care of you in exchange for "services". nope, you're on your own after 18.

women having rights may have been a mistake. repeal the 19th and take women's rights away.

edit: oh some comments seem to confirm my suspicions. the anime definitely left out the child prostitution part even though its kind of obvious given the setting.

it's not that the church is rotten. but just like the head priest said: you can say feed the chillunz but can you provide for them? heck, can you even grow your own food? this is why infrastructure is so important and why the places where there's infrastructure is where most of the people are. this is also why a doctor would never go to the mountains and be a doctor there despite people on the mountains also need doctors just as much they are needed in big cities. groceries are too far, small businesses are too far, leisure places are too far etc.

The Queen of the grey robes so to speak. This position will surely accelerate her and the head priest's progress in climbing the curch hierarchy... not that she intended to do so. I fear next episode will be the harsh reality of having to deal with the insufficent funding.

It felt a bit eerie when Main enthusiastically went onboard the child labor idea. I get that it is necessary in this specific case, but that doesn't mean she needs to cheerfully proclaim that children have a duty to work. It seems like a mismatch in tone and character.

Excellent again. The politicking of the church is fierce, i mentioned if there would be some tensions between the head and high priest and it seems there is, it'd be incredible down the line if they were able to depose the high priest and the head priest takes over. Although a tad bit naive, i still like how Myne always plans for things and doesn't just throw the moral card in any given situation.

Well, child labor is nothing new in that world. Pre-baptism children like Tuuli was in season 1 go to the forest to forage for wood & food. And post-baptism (meaning 7 years old children) go to work 3 times a week.
Even in our world, child labor was widely used in the middle ages, so it is nothing surprising to see it in this isekai.
