THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.

Well this was quite something...

OP song is kinda catchy althoughd didn't impress me. They really made Yuzu's personality stand out quite a bit from this show so far. Might have to get used to the character expressions in this show as it goes over sometimes.

Mei is such a tease with her antics lul . It also didn't take long for Yuzu to witness Mei making out with a boy before running off. Got what I had expected from the first episode.

Oh, I hope that the adaptation will not be extremely melodramatic, because the adaptations of this genre usually have big problems with this.

That was some intense kissing at the end. Yuzu really should've done some research about the school beforehand, but it's hilarious to see her as the nail that sticks out.

I can already see it going the route of melodrama.

Well, if these are common romantic drama tropes, then I do not mind. I'm more afraid to see something of the times of Maria-sama, because I'm already tired of yuri of such a tone.

Not the best quality but good enough, op is cheery unlike how the anime will be like.
That teacher forced kiss is godawful, they should have cutted it out since it contributes nothing to yuri.
The yuri scenes ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) were alright.

Damn the op and ending are good, especially the ending since it seems like it's drawn by SU herself which is amazing.
It summarised the first chapter pretty good and damn the kisses seem more intense than in the manga (WHICH IS NOT BAD AT ALL LIKE LOOK AT THAT YUZUMEI KISS IN THE MANGA AND THEN IN THE ANIME)

It was a pretty good start for reasons. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Yuzu sticking out in the school was hilarious to watch. xD

The whole teacher thing pretty much ensures that there's gonna be some intense melodrama down the line but let's see.
Liking Yuzu so far and Harumin is fun too, neutral towards Mei.

The kissing at the end was pretty intense and good. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Good development overall, not sure why I didn't expect Mei to be her step sister. xD

Pretty much all of this is how I feel too ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

I'm loving the detail on the main character designs and their features too ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) and man dem kissing scenes and dat cleavage scene (I've seen so many girls do that with their phones IRL lol)

From what I hear, this manga is one of the best of it's genre so I'm expecting this to be one of the best yuri series I've ever seen (Hopefully it stays faithful to the manga)

The OP and ED are pretty good too =o

I was a bit afraid it might not be as good as manga. I'm glad I was mistaken!
Animation is beautiful, voice actors fit perfectly (although I expected Mei's voice to be a bit deeper, but I'll get used to it eventually), characters look very good (besides Himeko, what did they do to her, where are her eyebrows, where is her face's chubbiness?).
OP and ED aren't the best I've heard but I like them, they're catchy, especially ED.
I'm looking forward to see more.

That was compelling, i guess that's the strength that people mentioned from the manga.

Liking Yuzu and her character a lot, not sure yet about Mei.

To me, it looks like she's lacking self-worth, therefore she's doing it with the teacher to feel wanted, same reason probably why she kissed Yuzu.

Character interaction is something i value high so this could be very good.

Do not confuse "drama" and "melodrama". These are close terms, but their use is different.

I surprisingly really like Yuzu. Watching her struggle to fit in and make friends while also being submerged into a new culture where she is seen as a trouble maker.

I feel bad for Mei...being married off to some older guy at such a young age. Can't wait for that to fall apart and she can be with Yuzu.

Perfect adaptation. I've been waiting years for this to get animated! So happy with what I got. I thought I'd have trouble with the art at the beginning, but that became a non-issue, since I got used to it pretty fast, and was just busy being engrossed in the episode.

OP visuals were great.

Can't wait for next ep.

This is nothing like Sakura Trick. That didn't even have a story. Not every chapter in the manga (Citrus) has kissing/making out. So I doubt every episode will have it.

@RobertBobert
The only proper melodrama yuri out there is Oniisama e, which is one of the best yuri anime out there, because it is a good melodrama. When a melodrama is done right, it's really good.

Melodrama is a constant switch between light and heavy moments, they're quite instable in tone, and thus call for powerful emotions if done right. Or:
Melodrama consistently displays "key constitutive factors": pathos, overwrought or heightened emotion, moral polarization (good vs. evil), non-classical narrative structure (e.g., use of extreme coincidence and deus ex machine), and sensationalism (emphasis on action, violence, and thrills).

Quoting wikipedia for a proper definition.

Nevertheless, most reviewers criticize it for being too melodramatic. Not to mention the fact that in our time many casual people think that this is a finely thought-out parody of shoujo yuri. But in any case, Maria-sama has always been a special work for me, considering that there are almost no canonical lesbians there.

Truly the new savior of anime. Alright maybe not, but the art is pretty great and it looks like it's going to be a faithful adaption of a good manga. It's definitely going to be very melodramatic but the manga was as well so if that's not your thing then abandon ship now.

Just a small warning but you've both pegged down Mei's character wrong. She isn't really thinking clearly right now and it's not her fault. They'll clear up the thing with the teacher in the next episode and I think you'll start to sympathize with her a bit.

If you don't mind being spoiled a bit for what's likely to happen next episode:

Well, for me it's Citrus the "parody" of a shōjo yuri, it checks all clichés of a smutty shōjo. This first episode it really symptomatic, with Yuzu (blonde-haired girl) falling in love after a forceful kiss by a mean-and-cold black-haired and beautiful bishōnen girl. It becomes borderline rapey a little while after if I remember the manga well.

Maria-sama is more a tribute to pre-war shōjo literature. In that way it is indeed quite "classic". You can see that for a parody I guess.

Yes it was rape as well. I never denied that. And no I'm not justifying it on either end. Mei in response to being sexually abused started sexually abusing someone else. It's extremely messed up. Like I said earlier, she isn't really well in the head; although it's worth noting that it's a fairly realistic response. People in real life sometimes take out sexual frustration on others after being abused themselves.
