THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
Ah, there's more commentary and talk about bullying this episode. As a major social issue, there's no perfect solution to bullying.

I'm not surprised that Rei wants to do anything to help Hina. In ways, he can find bullying as a problem that relates to him too. I'm glad Hina is doing a little bit better. The support she gets from her current friends and family is more than ever.

That's a cute little cat toy Rei received :)

Rei's teacher was about to have an heart attack, when he started talking about bullying. Hayashida is such a great guy and the way he discussed about the problem was probably the best I've seen being done in an anime so far.

That semi-confession/description Rei gave about Hina was so sweet, the teacher couldn't countain his excitement; too bad it got shot down soon after.

This week we got Akari's view about Hina's issue. While it's different from the grandpa's it's still perfectly understandable.
It was good to see Hina smile at the end.

I don't know if the series can reach even higher heights after last week; but this episode was so good too, especially the first half.

The comedy bits at the beginning were a bit too flashy. Felt like some subtleness would have carried it better. The visual execution for the talk on bullying was spot on with the isolated person crumbling, however, as it really conveyed that there's no simple solution and it's up to what the victim wants.
I need sleep.

Beautiful episode again, the imagery for this episode was off the charts though.

Hayashida is truly one of the best characters in this show, I loved the conversation he had with Rei as he discussed the problem of bullying and how the solution to it needs to tailored to fit the needs of the victim. There is a solution but there's no perfect solution.
Loved the part where Rei talked about Hina to Hayashida, them Hayashida reactions had me laughing.

The part in the Shogi club where everyone spies on an angry Rei was hilarious, It might not be for Shogi itself but seeing Rei with so much drive sure has got everyone emotional, hell even I was. XD
Nikaidou reactions were gold.

I like how we got to see Akari's side of things and it really nice how they contrasted it with the grandpa feeling the same thing but coming out with the bold declarations that Akari wasn't able.
The part where Rei says Akari is her savior too was absolutely beautiful, the art in that scene with the twilight through the windows and Akari crying was absolutely mesmerizing.

Hina's smile at the end. <3

The scenes with Rei's teacher was fun to watch. Rei asked him for advice on what's the best way to handle bullying, but there really is no perfect solution. The important thing is to ask Hina about what kind of solution she's hoping for. I love seeing him do his best to help Hina. It's good to see she's doing better now. She had a fun time at the park with her grandpa and Momo. It's interesting to see Akira's side of things. She didn't know what to do to help Hina. The part where Rei says Akari is his savior too was wonderful. Hina have Rei a nice gift.

5/5- Another strong episode after the feels train from last week. This season has been phenomenal thus far. Also seeing this side of Rei has been great! His character isn't as one dimensional as it use to be at the very start of the series so seeing his evolution has been fantastic to watch.

So we get an aftermath of the bullying episode and this one was almost as good in my opinion. We got to see how Hina's problems affect everyone around her. Point in case, Akari felt helpless in trying to help the younger sister she is raising while Rei is desperately wanting to get better at shogi.

And god damn Rei saves the fucking day in making Akari feel better as well! That was a really sweet and helpful thing to say to Akari. Good job Rei! You're a savior yourself! I also found it funny that Akari decided to power walk when she heard how much Rei weighs.

Anyways, I don't read the manga so I'm not sure whats going to happen...but I ship the hell out of Rei x Hina. I'm sure he doesn't see Hina more than just a close friend (for now) but I wouldn't mind seeing them develop into a relationship. I did love that Hina also thought about Rei and got him a present. Hina is too sweet...which makes me want to slap this shit out of those bullies even more.

Just because it touches an important subject doesn't mean it's great, but this episode shows various emotions, including a lot of comedic relieves while solving bullying issue as opposed to the more serious talk. I think I can give it a pass, but beware if it involve in more and more non-shogi theme it'll has identity crisis rather than genre shift.

Honestly, if you think that the show is about shogi you are getting it wrong, man. The show is about the life of Rei and his relations with those around him. Shogi becomes important in the show when it's important to Rei, and as Rei has learned that there are more things to his life than shogi (The study group, the science club and his relation with the Kawamoto family) it's natural that the focus of the show gets away from shogi.

To me, this episode did a lot of things right, and even if the comedy at the beginning seemed out of place to some people, they knew when to deliver the more serious talk, and because of the previous comedy, it hits you a lot harder.

Rei is so clueless that he didn't even realice that his teacher was asking if he liked Hina lol. Also, Rei and Hina are so goddamn cute together. I really, and I mean REALLY hope that they end up together, but I won't be that mad if they don't.

This episode of 3 gatsu (ep 27) didn't need flashy animation to be good. In fact, it could be better than the previous episode. First, let's go in the direction. Things felt very different today. And that can be attributed to the episode director who is known to ED family shows. The first half was a wonderful dialog with Sensei and Rei and in that convo, there were great visual quirks and even auditory. For example, the narration playing with the DBZ "find out next time" towards the end was a really cute touch. The overall nature of the comedy is tightly directed that it doesn't feel out of place. Anyways seeing Sensei parse through Reis confession had me smiling the whole time because it's so relatable. Also seeing Sensei give advice and even bitter truths was a great way to show how adults process things in this world 3 gatsu established. Honestly, it could be Japan as well. After that, the second half was a fun dialog between Akari and Rei. I found it adorable how she got flustered over Rei's weight. And towards the ending, we are left with a touching/heartwarming conclusion. Overall this episode had the best pacing yet. Things flowed organically.

I truly felt that we got a new image of Rei today. Rei continues to grow and develop in such a wonderful progression.

I know people will hate me saying this every week but this season continues to be far better than the first season every episode at a time. I am so glad Okada Kenjirou as a series director it utilizing the talent around him at SHAFT.

Rei is so cute, i really love how he wants to help Hina-chan.

I LOVED, LOVED HOW MUCH EMOTION AND DETERMINATION REI SHOWED IN THIS EPISODE. I LOVED, LOVED, THE REI-NIKAIDOU MOMENT <3

Can't agree enough about Rei.

It's stupid hating someone for stating the obvious. It's not a negative thing at all, if anything, shows how the series is growing and the very same fact that S2 with just 5 episodes is already better than the first one denotes the quality and it's super worth-praising.

Most of the time, when a first season is great, S2 ends up being not as good as the first one, let alone overcome it. So, keep them coming!

P.s. I'm already thinking i'll end up adding this to my favs list.

Many might disagree, but I actually like that the series hasn't turned completely bleak and still maintains the silly comedy it always had. It makes things less depressing and reminds us that even if life is full of hardships, you always have those little moments of light from time to time.

Holy cow, Rei this episode felt like a different character (in a good sense). He was more decided, more motivated in everything (he is even willing to gain money for anything Hina may need) and even more reactive than his usual self. A proof of how much he cares for his saviours. It was cool seeing him with that attitude.

I love the teacher a lot. He is funny, but at the same time down to earth and able to be serious when the situation needs to be serious. Liked a lot his approach to the subject of bullying and how he said that the victim must have the last word, since in some situations, causing a ruckus can turn things worse.
Also, for some people, him becoming that excited for the posibility of Rei having a girl he loves may look silly, but, considering how concerned he is for Rei, it's understandable.

Loved how happy Nikaidou was due Rei's new motivation.

The part of Akari was more heavy on feelings than the first half episode, but was nice to have another point of view on Hina's actions, apart that I liked how the show focused on her doubts and worries after taking the place of her deceased mother, since I think she became a bit sidelined during the previous season. Good thing Rei is the MVP and is here to dispel her darkness a bit.

This show doesn't always get the use of its comedy right, but this was one occasion where it really did, with how it was used and intermixed with Hayashida's talk with Rei about bullying. It also worked well alongside Rei's progression in this scene as, while he has come to an imperfect solution to this bullying issue, he is doing a hell of a lot more than I could have ever imagined from him at the very start of the show; of course, I am concerned about Rei just wanting to play shogi for the money now, and I'm hoping that doesn't come back to bite him later on. That aside, the exchange between Akari and Rei in the house in the second half was powerful and well-executed, although I don't think it quite lived up to the heights of last week (although, in fairness, not much could have lived up to that really).

This was a great follow up to last episode. It really feels like Rei is taking a more active role this season, and that's a nice change in his character. The teacher was the MVP of this episode too, he had me laughing out loud when he was picking Rei's brain to see if he liked Hina. Also, I TOTALLY ship Rei and Hina now. They seem like a really good fit together. Plus it would make Rei an "official" member of the Kawamoto family if he ever got together with Hina, and that would be really nice.

Rei really thinking about how to help Hina is great. Hayashida Sensei is the best. That misunderstanding is funny though.

Just to give a counterpoint, I love the comedy in 3 gatsu.
Despite the criticism and like in the first season, Umino Chica is able to bring us from a serious moment, to a hilarious one and then to a sad and tearful one, all in 2 chapters or 20 minutes. She is a master in this regard and for me it works smoothly and perfectly.

Like in first season, Sensei is best sensei, Nikaido is amazing (I laughed out loud thanks to him today), Akari is wonderful ...

My love for this show is as strong as ever.

Akari is insecure. She has to deal with the parenting of her two little sisters ever since their mom died. She did a great job, yet she hasn't had a problem coming her way that is this severe (bullying).

No one wants to see anyone in the family suffer so i understand her point of why Hina should have run away from the situation, not tackle it head-on. She has no connection to Chiho whatsoever.

She was completely overwhelmed when Hina came in completely mentally destroyed. I'm glad that Rei reassured her that she has been a great ''mom'' for the ''children''. She was the one who picked him up from the streets after all.

Also SHAFT going more SHAFT on the comedy is still top tier.

First half was pretty fun,but the second half made this episode.

Glad that we got more focus on Akari and her concerns about Hina, don't blame her for that. Her narration showed once again one of the countless emotional highs of this show, savored every single second of it and her dialogue with Rei.

Episode was nicely wrapped up with another heartwarming dinner at the Kawamoto residence, although we didn't get to see much of it,but at least there was still the usual Momo fanservice :3

Just like few people, I don't agree with the criticisms regarding on the comedic tone shifts. I thought that it showed more to it that despite whatever happened people can still maintain their happiness, to some extent at least.

And I can agree with Stark's statement that this was more of a social commentary on the topic, which was rather touchy and at the same time it makes me think about the past, which is more personal but... yeah there are a lot of things that I'm thinking about right now. Great episode as usual tbh.

Another great episode. It was nice to see how much determination Rei actually has to repay his debt to Hina. Even though this episode didnt have beautiful animation like last week's episode, it was the small moments that really made it for me, like when Akari was with Rei in the kitchen talking about how worthless she felt when Hina open up about being bullied and not having the right words to say.

Seeing Rei tell Akari that she always has been there for her family and in turn basically saved him for how well she raised Hina was just very sweet.

Looking forward to the next episode.

I was a little worried that after last week's near masterpiece of an episode, this episode would be a bit of a let down. Thankfully, I was stupid to think that, as this episode was also absolutely brilliant. =3

Rei's talk with his club adviser and former homeroom teacher, Hayashida, was very strong and also important. It showcased just how difficult it is to find the right answer to solve the bullying problems that Hina is suffering from. Since there's no perfect solution to this situation, Rei must choose his options carefully as he showed just how much he wants to help out Hina.

Despite vowing to win a lot of Shogi matches from here on out, he ends up losing his next match. His anger at losing did surprise me though.

I really felt a lot of sympathy for Akari too. Shed was feeling down since she didn't have that much confidence in herself to help out and encourage Hina for her actions, like their grandpa did last week. Still, she's done her best and I'm sure that she'll continue to do so for the sake of herself and her family. =)

So Rei decided to come up with anti bullying measures because of what happened to Hina then. A professional at being a loner huh but being alone for 11 years sure is rough. Its sad that Hina's friend were forced to change schools but at least she had a friend like Hina though. Bullying unfortunately is not something that can be solved easily though. If you don't consider the feelings of each party then things will only get worst for all parties no matter the intention. Rei's description of Hina though was pretty detailed. Rei is really determined to pay back the debt to Hina through his victories here then. Nice to see Akari look so happy for the sales though. Akari feels regret that she's unable to help Hina then by saying anything. At 19 Akari really has it tough managing both the household and finances. Rei's words to Akari though really were touching though. This was a cute and a hearwarming episode and one that showed how determined Rei is to repay his debt to Hina and her family.

OMG! another great episode!
especially the first part, while the teacher is being serious about the complicated issues of bullying, the whole first part is so enjoyable to watch and I laughed and giggled so much because of the teacher noticed that Kiriyama inadvertently said so many great things to Hina to the point that it looks like he adores Hina in a very romantic aspect!
Nikaidou is pumped-up with Kiriyama's practise session! what great shogi buddies!
Akari cried because she felt helpless on Hina's situation, good thing Kiriyama told her that she's not on the wrong side.
Hina's so cute and adorable when she gave the cellhone strap plushie to Kiriyama!
SHAFT is really good in directing this whole series!
