THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
It's too cool to see how this is perfectly tieing into 0079 with every little detail being touched upon

First off, I felt nothing but pity for those people on that colony that literally got gassed out and dropped onto earth....For a second I thought that the couple that got a bit of focus there was some kind of easter egg for another Gundam series but boy was I wrong :(

Secondly, this episode pretty much showcased the atrocities committed by Zeon (Mainly the oldest son) and I must say that it's really sad to see how many lives have been lost over it....Half the earth's population and tons of colonies which totaled to billions of lives >.< But I also liked that we got to see more than one idealogy in Zeon come to a head in this from Ral and Dozle most of all

Thirdly, it's odd seeing how we barely had a lot of screen time for Char lol but I sure as hell loved the screen time for Sayla and Amuro....It's nice to see them before we get the events of 0079 and how they got to where they are in the original series (And I like how this pretty much tied up all of the Texas loose ends too lol)

Overall, this was another great OVA and even though I was salty that the episode ended right when Char was about to go HAM, I'll live because there's at least one more OVA left and I know that it'll be filled with dat Char Aznable greatness (And maybe even some Gundam greatness too since we are pretty much right at the start of the original series now)

9/10 for this one

Really great episode, all that Sayla action was very cool to see, the scene between Dozle and Mineva was really heartwarming. Really excited for the next OVA, how the battle of Loum unfolds will be interesting.
9.5/10 (I thought that the couple's story was unnecessary and forced)

In the final minutes of the episode I was wondering, why did a more dynamic version of the main theme suddenly start playing. Then I realised. As Char removed the limiters of his Zaku II and became the Red Comet, I got goosebumps, the attack sequence was utterly thrilling. A legend was born.

"Bow down before me, God!"

Quite a bit of time was spend creating strong WWII parallels. The atrocities committed by Zeon dwarfed the deeds of their real life counterparts, though. The juxtaposition of the horrific events and the inherent warmth of some of the parties involved (namely Dozle Zabi) was enthralling. That along with the heroic actions of individual people like Sayla in the midst of the chaos of war. The portrayal of that particular couple made the gassing along with the following colony drop even more depressing.

Ramba Ral proved his worth as a true man. Nothing less from a man who managed to win the affection of a woman like Crowley Hamon.

I really like how they continued the character development of Dolze. We always knew he was a lumbering oaf, but also wanting to be a gentle giant. After operation Britain he realized he killed millions of Mineva's & the realization of it all looked like it wanted to break him, but self-deception & twisting of reality makes him more of a Zabi. They are not strong or worthy of protecting their Mineva's so their death is justified, Even asking his wife to give him more kids to protect. I guess in him mind it would reinforce his resolve.

Dolze logic is really F*ck up so what your going to kill a bunch of other Minevas as well and killing their own fellow spacenoid these guys are super space nazis theyre turning colonies into space gas chambers only Side 3 colonies are left almost unscathed after the war also good episode

Tri-Stars Zaku best Zaku colors. That musical number was unnecessarily long. But I'll allow it, because Hamon is fine and Miyuki is Sawashiro (even if she didn't sing), and Ral'ssexy as fuck on that couch.

Aw yeah Sayla kicking ass, as she should.

One word : masterpiece

It's unbelievable how they can make a character so realistic, every scene are so well done, they're all so moving, the animation is over the top, soundtrack and insert songs always strike right into my heart, this anime about how the war started feel so real, because it's so nicely done I can't even imagine the amount of work they put in, and I don't have enough words to describe how great this anime is.

I really like the way this series has handled Sayla, turning her from a mostly weak character in 0079 to a fully realized tragic hero. The Colony Gas attack was a really missed opportunity to show Shiro Amada from 08th MS Team's POV since he was was canonically there.

Pretty good, thanks to the manga. I love those Dozle moments (this "they couldn't protect their Mineva" twisted delusion included) and it's nice to see Dewin's aura preserved by the anime transition.
Sayla's and the elder Zabi brother's voices are hard to get used to.

4/5 After rewatching most of the OAVs, I wonder if those episodes do not lack any directing flair. They seem rather flat, compared to the books.

Yes, the original missed several opportunities to play her as important as she was supposed to be. Yasuhiko "fixed" that by "promoting" the character to the heroin rank, this change reaching its peak in the later A Baoa Qu battle when her status is determining in the resolution of the war.

PS: Yasuhiko was only ordered a manga based on the original Gundam.

So much this!

Aside from 08th MS, I don't really like neither of the Gundam titles, but this prequel is just that well-written.

damn that cliffhanger is frustrating lol i want to see Char badass mode already

and lol at Dozle at first his guilty that he killed a lot of cute babies among their opponents and later he changed his mind that their opponents are just weaklings and to be blamed for failing to protect their own cute babies so he is not guilty at all afterwards

You should've appeared more~

My fangirling aside, this episode is really enjoyable, gotta love that this prequel shows things from all sides. I really hope after this prequel they would remake the One Year War series aka original Gundam with this kind of artwork and animation.

Heheh Dozle was really "aggressive" back then, he wanted more kids.

This episode was so awesome.

When I read the manga I hated the part where they kill all the people in the colony and then all thise people on Earth, by throwing the colony at them. I'm still horrified but it was greatly animated.

I love Hamon and Ramba. Can't help but feel sad when I think about what happens to them after.

Poor Sayla, she doesn't deserve all this sh*t. Also, she's badass af.

"Bow down before me, God" stole the show.

Holy fuck that ending... It's going to be a long wait till May. May then we'll see Amuro jump into the gundam.

Wasn't my favourite movie but the chapter with Artesia killed me @1.05.35, that soundtrack is indescribable. I think she's confirmed at that point what Casval did to Char.

Strangely enough, the civilian side story preceding the colony drop didn't make me cry. It was undeniably tragic but the weakest point of the film; I was expecting them to expand much more on the aftermath on Earth.

What did make me tear up was Dozle's interaction with Minerva; he has such a soft heart locked inside his Zabi upbringing :-( Poor Minerva must have had a tough upbringing.

Terrific episode!

This and episode 4 are the best The Origin has to offer by far. Episodes 1-3 were too slow a burn and could've been condensed into 1 episode. I also like how Char wasn't the focus in this episode. The early Origin episodes have indulged in serious Char wank and making him a bigger player in the story than he is.

I do miss Kycilia though. She hasn't had much to do in this series. While Ghiren, Dozle and Garma have all had moments to shine.

Also, another incredible song from Hamon. Ramba Ral also maintained his honor as a knight under the Zeon banner; by not participating in Operation Britain.

Nothing wrong with giving props to this episode in particular.

As for the Origin (manga and show), I agree that it does come off as high priced fanfiction at times. The Origin (manga) was written using the original anime, notes from Tomino (of things that he never included in the shows and movies) and the author's own creative liberty/interpretation of how the OYW started. The latter accounting for much of the Char wank and Zeon worship.

Agreed. Cima Garahau (from Stardust Memory) was also at the colony gassing and still has nightmares about it. With all the "blink and you miss them" cameos The Origin has put in so far. Not including Shiro and Cima was a big missed opportunity.

I'm still in love with this OVA, but this was the first episode that wasn't a perfect 10 for me. It really felt like there were several scenes that could have been cut or shortened, which made the run time bloated. Every other episode I've been intently glued to the screen, but this time I found myself anxiously checking my phone or trying to do something to stimulate myself during the slow parts.

For example, the young couple in the colony drop. Obviously they showed them to illustrate the tragedy of the human lives lost in this operation, but then we spent even more time reflecting on the same tragedy when Dozle is crying to his wife about all the other children he's killed. These two scenes in particular could have been tied together, showing people in the colony succumbing to gas, cutting to Dozle looking indignant, then to his wife holding Mineva, and finally back to a similar mother and child passing away inside the colony. That would have more quickly illustrated how the lives of people inside were being tragically extinguished while setting up for the later scene where Dozle reflects on it. But that's just an idea :p I just can't help but feel like if they had spent some more time tightening up every scene possible we could have taken off a good 15 or 20 minutes from the movie and been fine.

What I never understood is why people would join a military that goes and destroys their own homes. Casval's classmates at the academy came from Laum, yet the same military that they joined attacked Laum. Probably other classmates came from the colonies that were destroyed where the citizens were mass murdered. Would those soldiers obediently carry out orders to kill their own families?

But really, the point of this series of OVAs so far, there are dickheads everywhere, madness.
You cant side with Casval, just appreciate his badass show, outside that, fuck him.
He killed Char earlier on and now killed his parents.
There is nothing he won't do to achieve his revenge...

That was quite sad too, in the end, this is a hymn to war.

Two sides fighting for absolute control and people that just wanted to live their lives and be happy, getting caught it all that political BS and getting their lives destroyed...

The Zabis were merciless enough to bring down a whole colony on Earth, fucked up man.

The Hatte incident was very scary, Zeon is doing everything possible to win the war, even killing innocent civilians.

I think that this part is my favourite since it shows a bit of everything, Amuro, Artesia, Char and his relationship with other soldiers even secondary characters have their moment. I love
the spectacular space battles.

Firstly, Hamon great song, it was really enjoyable

I felt nothing but pity for those people on that colony that literally got gassed out and dropped onto earth....For a second I thought that the couple that got a bit of focus there would somehow survive and spawn to a gundam series but nope :(

Seeing Char,Artesia &amuro was all interesting as well, their relationships, occupations, behavior ,their drives and how their paths are gonna cross. At this point in time i just pity Sayla/Artesia because she's been all alone

it was interesting seeing how all these events tie up and it all takes off from MSG. really interesting
and Dozle (how old is ur wife) (why is Mineva's hair orange)

No wonder Char always seemed incredibly (that was a nice protrayal of how fast he was moving) and he really is digging that red color (and his outfit just works somehow)

Ending was hype because Char was there duh!

I'm really enjoying this OVA (which 1 hr per episode)

They really flesh out a lot of stuff here compared to MSG79. The colony drop was absolutely brutal. We really got to see the consequences in all its devastation.
Was a bit weird seeing Sayla/Artesia be such a badass though. She was much more subdued in the original series and Z.

So this is where that iconic scene from Gundam is from!

This is one of the best war terrors depictions I've ever seen, so many atrocities... I was truly sad watching this.
And after watching all that, I just can't really enjoy any Zeon win anymore, even with cool effects and Char being a badass.
I think the Japanese authors/directors have a specific way of dealing with wars cuz of what happened in WW2, I've noticed that in the Kurosawa movies as well.

In most cases, the MAL Average Scores don't mean anything, here is a question: were the works made before 2000 all shit?
Why are they so damn scarce in the Top 50? Think about how MAL is quite literally a filtered amount of the Anime fanbase.

Here's a timeline of the Top 15 in which you can check that, almost always, the scores are affected by the freshness, popularity and other factors that have nothing to do with quality.

Okay, i only made an account here to reply to someonebin a different subforum, but now that i have one i might as well comment as igo through my Gundam journey.

Never saw any Gundam excepg the first 3 eps of Gwitch, and nowvive decided to go through the entire thing. Im doingbit chronologically, as thats almost always the best way to experience a franchise, despite popular opinion to the contrary.

So far this is very well made, really interesting and im looking forward to seeing more. The Zabis are good villains, Casvall is a good anti-hero for this part, and i am looking forward to the conclusion.
