THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
Good episode. Despite not meeting entirely up to the expectations of Shinomiya, I like how her dish reminded him a bit of his past. It's the nostalgic taste that matters and I think she nailed it in the end.

A very good effort by Megumi and I think that almost everyone acknowledges her abilities at the school; she needs to build up more confidence though.

Glad to see that she is staying.

Dojima is a crafty guy.....I should have expected nothing less from the all time #1 chef of the school

The character development for Shinoniya as well as finding out about his past was really well done and now I can understand why he acted the way he did all this time but luckily after tasting Megumi's dish he finally realized that his methods were wrong

I'm really happy for Megumi too because I love her character and I'd hate to see her go...The writing in this series is amazing because Megumi is a very kind, caring and understanding person that is just really lovable like a mother and this episode showcased that to a tee

Brilliant episode from beginning to end, the results were expected and didn't take anything away from either participants which I really liked too and the post credit scene made me smile a lot :'')

P.S. I ship Shinoniya and Hinako so hard now lol

The Youkai Loli Megumi's in the judges fantasy-gasms were so cute <3<3

ShinomiyaxHinako OTP <3

Loved the OST during the Shinomiya flashback. Cruel time he's had in France.

Memories of mommy always win :P Didn't expect he'd have an accent ^^;

Megumi's reason wanting to give them a relaxing dish was really nice. Loved how Hinako put a coin from her pocket just to make it a draw :P And her "Ur not honest at all" then getting grabbed from the head was so lol. Gotta love her and Shino's interactions :3

And I just friggin love Souma's frustration at losing. His character is so cool :D It was nice to see Gin watching :P

The OST was on-point for every scene that really mattered in this episode. Absolutely top!

I got teary-eyed for a few scenes cause they were heartfelt and the music added to that especially in this.

The so-called secondary characters in this anime are worth everything. Dojima, Shinomiya and Hinako are the winners of the last two episodes IMO.

Didn't doubt for a second they would actually get expelled. Though that would make the show a bit more interesting but still wouldn't want that.

Moe moe kyun! Chibi Megumis are adorable.

Younger Shinomiya reminds me so much of Soma

Knowing how a fandom works, I bet some people now ship Shinomiya and Megumi.

The Youkai Tadokoro-chan(s) were so cute~!

Seeing Megumi like that was always heartbreaking, thankfully it all turned out well at the end.

This episode was also very good, despite not as tense as the previous one.

And with this, we are halfway through the season. More epicness to come!

The result was predictable but it was nice to see the effect that Megumi's dish had on Shinomiya. We got to see why he's so strict about not changing the recette. Good episode, and Hinako continues to crack me up lol
People on MAL refuse to actually enjoy watching anime.

Great adaptation of this battle and really nice to see Souma punching that wall because he lost for the first time here and if Gin wasn't there Souma and Megumi would have been fired.I need the OST of this anime when it is release and next episode will be good with some new character to appear.

This episode made me realize how much Shinomiya and Soma are alike. Only Shinomiya went down a darker path.

Also, everytime they mention France I think of Ratatouille XD Speaking of Ratatoullie, Shinomiya cries for the same reason Anton Ego cries.. because the food reminded them of their mother's cooking/warmth. I can't help but think the mangaka was inspired by this when he wrote this arc.

Good solid episode, they did a good job adapting this battle between Shinomiya and Tadokoro. I think that the scene with Souma mad at himself for losing was a bit cooler in the manga, but they still did a solid job.

Doujima-senpai ended up as a really cool guy. Tadokoro isn't expelled, Shinomiya got back on track and Souma tasted defeat. He is a genius, but that is all more reason for him to evolve even more.

I was disappointed by this episode.
It felt really off.
Lot of scenes lacked impact, especially the one with souma when he hit the wall.
The music was horribly place, the ending too and
there was an overuse of flashback and simple background.

Hell even the flashback lacked impact and emotion and actually meaning.

Yokai Chibi Megumi were too friggin' cute! I'd buy a full collection of them plushies!

Shinomiya's backstory (somewhat) justified his arrogant attitude. Quite the hard time he went through in France. But what Dojima said about him hitting a wall was also true.

Hinako meddling with Shinomiya and getting beat every time was hilarious! They're totally OTP. :3

Decent episode. Souma admitting defeat in frustration was kind of cool, since he also hit a wall of sort. I expect some character development for him soon.

Great, emotional episode! Perfect conclusion for both Megumi and Shinomiya - they both got something out of this experience. Doujima is a great mentor!

The only one who was left unsatisfied was Souma, who only competed to win. That was even better since it perfectly illustrates his character as someone determined to reach the top and who cannot stomach defeat. It's scary how similar he is to Shinomiya in his younger days. Hopefully his companions will help him stray from this darker path.

Youkai Megumis were cuteness overload :D

I agree, but in rereading it I can't think why. When I read it I had the clear feeling that what Souma said he lost it wasn't they lost to Shimomiya, but rather he lost (as Megumi did not) the same way that Shinomiya lost. That in only thinking of the competition instead of the judges, they lost, while Megumi, while not being able to touch them on taste, was the true winner.

The adaption did every scene and had ever single line from the manga, they didn't leave anything out, but the feeling wasn't the same there. The only thing I can think of is that the manga had more impact because the static frames focuses attention slowing the mind down so there is time to think that thought, an effect that animation with its fluid vividness cannot duplicate.

I will have to mull that one over, but thanks, your point got me thinking about it.

Megumi is saved, partly through Dojima's pointing out Shinomiya's insecurity. And it was surprising how Souma took that loss as his own, although it wasn't unexpected. Decent episode. Seems like next time will be interesting.

Kojirou as a magician and Megumi as some cute yokai lol.

Maybe it's just your imagination of the scene that is too great XD
I've felt the same too when I read some manga or novel and compare it to its anime or movie.

Surely producers imagination and ours may have some differences, especially the feels. Let us just say we imagine because we love it, otherwise in many case they imagine because they must.

Really appreciated this episode. Now I understand how Shinomiya scored his own spin-off series. He's a pretty interesting character.

What I'm looking forward to now, is how Yukimura deals with his first defeat. I'm guessing up until now, he's thought himself unbeatable, even against his dad, which is why he's so reckless. I'll be looking forward to some more amazing battles from this series!

Thanks for responding you make an excellent point. There is also the case that people imagine a scene from a movie that they "remember" for years, only to find out later that it didn't happen they way they "remembered" it. (and yes, I have had that happen to me).

But in this particular case I do think that the writer meant that scene because later we discover:

Well, is it me or Souma seems kinda megalomaniac as in obsessed with winning? I mean you would expect protagonists to be more mature and here he shows some villain characteristics. Odd. I recall back when he said he'd be the top chef at the Academy in front of all students. Here's wondering how he would act if he lost to Megumi or one of his friends.

Btw assuming this is the end of the first cour there's one or two weeks break?
