I finally got time (and remembered) to go and see the OVA.
Non-spoiler thoughts:
I didn't keep check on how long all the trailers were, but minus those, the whole thing from start to finish was probably 50-55 minutes.
When I first saw the redesigns I really didn't know what to think of them, but they looked great on screen. Fit in with Namori's style, and especially the backgrounds were stunning! Early on, I couldn't help but wondering if the club house and the garden outside had ever looked so pretty, and it only got better once they get out in nature.
All eight main characters have pretty much the same amount of screen time (slightly more to the amusement club), and there's no specific focus on one or two characters. Virtually all minor supporting cast make cameos with one or two lines each.
Basically, it's what you'd expect from Yuru Yuri. Comedy, slice of life, light yuri. The story is original, but also includes a couple of manga chapters adapted and slightly changed so as to fit into the story.
Detailed (as far as I remember) summary:
It starts out with showing snow falling on the club house, and in enters Akari. Well... It turns out to be a partial adaptation of the manga chapter Special 10 (the Season 2 announcement chapter), more specifically the "seinen" part of it, except that everyone is speaking English! Presumably at least some phonetic reading going on, but still. I don't remember the 100% exact lines, but it's pretty fun hearing things like "We almost riddled you with bullets" :D So, seinen!Akari avoids getting shot, and Kyouko announces that "Since this is a new episode, let's decide what to do". She holds out four Mirakurun cards, and Akari picks one, which turns out to be "Go camping". Chinatsu: "Fortune does not favour you, Akari" Akari: "Yeah, who goes camping in this cold? That's nonsense!"
Kyouko admits that her suggestions might've been a bit out there, and shows the other three cards, which include "Exploring space". An alarm then sounds out, and Akari's odangos then start blinking red. They all get ready (Chinatsu holding a Mirakurun wand, and Yui wearing a red cape) and as they are about to attack something or whatever, the whole screen falls over to reveal the opening credits.
The opening credits are the usual, simple shots of each character and so. Nothing really noteworthy.
The actual episode then begins during the summer. First comes a pretty straight-forward adaptation of chapter 62 (Chinatsu spilling tea on herself), but continues on. After Akari also has to change (borrowing Kyouko's gym uniform) they look through the closet of the club room and eventually find a tent, which leads Kyouko into suggesting they should go camping. Ayano shows up to (I think) remind them of summer homework. Yui giggles over Ayano's puns, and then when she leaves, Kyouko says the same kind of pun. Yui: (-_-)
Then there's an adaptation of chapter 72 (Akari and Sakurako trying to look adult as they're drinking tea), but with some changes (Himawari is there with them the whole time, and they also talk about the camping plans). Kyouko then shows up at the student council: Kyouko: *pulls open the door* "Sugiura Ayano!!" Ayano: "Toshino Kyouko?"
Basically, Kyouko gets the student council to join in on the trip.
During these parts, pretty much all of the supporting cast show up for a line or two here and there. For example: Tomoko: "Will Akari be going camping with you?" Chinatsu: "Yes, and Yui-sempai" Tomoko: "Oh, her sister will probably be lonely... Maybe I should give her a call" Chinatsu: ?
The amusement club meet up at the train station, and Chinatsu gives Yui some kind of amulet she made (not pixellated), and I liked the part where Yui read "Made in China" (Chee-na) on it. It turns out that Kyouko picked that particular train line because they operate a Mirakurun-themed train (so Ayana Taketatsu's voice is heard in the speaker). She puts a Mirakurun hat on Chinatsu in front of the train and takes a bunch of pictures.
On the train they start to get hungry, and Akari's chocolate bar has already started to melt. Chinatsu: "Oh, that reminds me! I made sandwiches!" The others: o.O Chinatsu: *pulls out box* "Do you want some?" The others: o.O
She opens the box and... it turns out that they look like perfectly normal sandwiches! And (when they eventually get the courage to try them) they taste great too.
They get off the train and walk for a while to the camping site. Once again, really beautifully painted backgrounds. There they meet up with the student council who were driven there by Nishigaki-sensei. She and the student council president then drive off to what's apparently their own camping site (nothing is shown of that other than - at a later point - a big explosion far away).
After setting up the two tents, they go exploring and find a see-saw, which leads to a discussion of what word they use to refer to it "Gittan Bakkon"? "Gittan Battan"? "Gikkon Battan"? (Kyouko: "Eh, see-saw is fine")
It's then time to make food, but as Sakurako didn't bring the curry and meat she was responsible for (she did bring a regular boil-in-bag though), Ayano (I think) tells her, Kyouko and Chinatsu to go to the nearest store and buy it. Yui suspects where this will go and tells Chinatsu to make sure they buy what they're supposed to, and she's not wrong: Kyouko: "Let's buy these chips!" Chinatsu: "No." Sakurako: "I'm sure Funami-sempai would like them..." Chinatsu: "No."
and when deciding on spicy or mild curry: Sakurako: "Mirakurun would probably choose these" Chinatsu: "That has nothing to do with this." Kyouko: "And the chips too!" Chinatsu: "That has even less to do with this!"
While they are gone Yui and Himawari have a small conversation, and we have a chapter 75 (Akari asking Chitose about what she fantasizes about, with the fantasy taking place in the woods), while Ayano is cooking something with eggs by herself. After the others return, they eat, and afterwards it turns out that Ayano made caramel pudding for them, which was something that had been brought up earlier when they decided to go on the trip.
Then they go on a kimodameshi (I think it was Chitose's suggestion), and draw lots for the pair ups: Akari & Chinatsu, Yui & Chitose, Sakurako & Himawari, and Kyouko & Ayano. While they go two at the time, it shows short scenes of what the other characters are doing back home.
Akari & Chinatsu are both terrified, and when they return to the camp: Chinatsu: "Yui-sempai! It was so scary!" *hugs Yui* Yui: *sees a shell-shocked Akari walk out from the forest with Chinatsu-hand-size bruises on her arm* "Ah..."
Yui & Chitose has a nice conversation, which has the only appearance of Chizuru ("Dabaa~")
Sakurako teases Himawari for being scared of the dark, until a caterpillar falls down on her. Sakurako: "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!" *runs away with the flashlight*
cut to: Hanako: "It's so silent when Sakurako isn't around..."
cut to: Sakurako: AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!"
It's then Kyouko & Ayano's turn, and Chitose excuses herself to go to the bathroom. They talk for quite a while, including about scary stuff like vampires and monsters. And then, BLORT! They look up and then run away screaming, as they're being followed by something horrifying back to the camp site. Turns out it was an almost completely blood-soaked Chitose.
They then go to a nearby bath house (also so that Chitose can wash up), which was a bit of an odd scene. It was quite short, and other than Chitose's clothes, it doesn't have anything to do with the "plot", but there's not particularly much fan service either (don't think that half of them are even showed). It's like the studio felt they had to had a scene like that, but didn't want to do anything more than "necessary".
Before they go to bed, Kyouko gives out pyjamas to the student council, which I guess is the anime introduction of those four (sheep, raccoon, rabbit, chicken). The next morning Nishigaki-sensei returns to take their bags, and they all take the bus home, discussing what they should do next during the summer.
The end credits show (mostly) still shots of other things they did while camping. I can't recall ever having gone to see a feature in the cinemas with only 90 seconds credits...
I didn't think of it until I was writing this down, but I can't recall there being a single "Akkarin" or joke about her lack or presence. Really, if someone saw this without knowing anything about Yuru Yuri, they wouldn't get any impression of that particular part.
I was confused from seeing these comments, but finally I figured out that this
thing first came out in theaters on November 29, 2014 and then was released
on Blu-ray and DVD today (Tokyo time), February 18th, 2015.
I have always been a huge fan of Yuru Yuri all along. So I was extremely
surprised to see all of the experimentation that went on. Normally, an OVA
just gets put together as a routine project. If anything, the animation will be
worse that the TV series. In this case, they attempted some fascinating things
with the lighting, trying to capture the feeling of a hot summer day. I am not
saying that the result was flawless. But they demonstrated to me that
impressionistic effects of lighting and camera angle could work for Cute Girls
Doing Cute Things. I am guessing that it costs a lot more to do it this way.
Also, this was supposedly a cinematic release. So people who physically travel
to a movie theater probably hope for something a bit extra special.
It was so funny that they had that part in the very beginning where they were
all speaking English wish subtitles in Japanese. Let's hope for the subs (in
English) soon.
@Sparvid: Thank you very much for posting that detailed summary.
The phrase "light Yuri" is a perfectly good way of describing this. However, there
is a phrase "Secondary-element Yuri" which is a category of the Yuri genre of
broadcast TV anime series, OVAs, manga and novels. The other kind of Yuri is
called "Central-element Yuri". Here is a Wikipedia article that explains it well:
This is also an excellent example of "Cute Girls Doing Cute Thing". This is a
specific and well-defined genre. In Yuru Yuri, all of the girls are cute and all
of the things that they do are cute. In fact, Yuru Yuri could be argued to be
the first historical example of a CGDCT broadcast TV series which was truly
100% CGDCT. In older CGDCT, there was usually a male character or two,
or a non-cute female character, or some mixture of non-cute activity. Then,
subsequent to Yuru Yuri, there was quite a spate of 100% CGDCT series
such as Joshiraku, Yuyushiki, Kitakubu, Tesagure Bukatsumono, Sakura Trick
and more recently Girl Friend Beta. Prior to Yuru Yuri, I think that people
who produced anime series expected that a series would not be interesting
enough without having a male character around to mess things up.
With the ova, we review all the things about the series,
Dat beginning...what's the point to make those style parody!?
Some secondary characters don't get so much screen time, but everyone do show up...
Could you share a link, please?
Edit: Never mind, I've found it. Just google for "Lazy Lily" and then go to their new website. Not completely translated (Ayano's puns are left in japanese), but good enough.
The first two seasons contained stuff from Volume 1-8. The OVA also contained some Chapters. The Manga is now at Volume 12 or 13 so it´s just enough for another season. If the OVA sells well it might not that unlikely.
In the very beginning, after alarm went off and Yui says "We've got to go!", Chinatsu says something I can't understand no matter how many times I've listened to this fragment. The LL subs have only romaji translation for this line (Sekai no tame ni!). Could someone help me understand what does she says?

I assume you're asking what "Sekai no Tame ni" means. It means "For the world".
DAT start! I'm laughing too hard xD Good Engrish, here!
I missed them so much, hoping that there'll be more. Need Season 3!!!
Ayano x Kyoko moments :3 They were holding hands also :3
Love the opening!
sakurako was really funny the whole time. plus, that face.
loving the kyoko-sakurako team too.
WE CAN FIT MORE. wow.
awesome all around.
1 hour long!
First half was a little slow, but the latter one with them camping was hilarious. Shame that the the other members of the family didn't go, that would be even more fun.
Totally worth the wait, great comedy as ever! Akari is so adorable!!
The studio change wasn't as bad as I was expecting which is nice, although comparing it to the blu-ray's of the TV series the OVA looks a little darker which hurts the "brighter" feel of the show IMO.
When is my season 3 coming!! I've just recently re-watched season 1 and 2 so it didn't feel like it was a long time ago but watching this OVA makes me want to watch them again every week.
Dem Engrish though.. it was more than enough to make up for the lack of usual "Akariiin" title-call.
So good! Kyouko/Ayano and Sakurako/Himawari moments were so cute, also it was really cute to see them all dressed with those cute pajamas!
I hope we get a 3rd season soon! 8/10
It was so cute, warm and summery... if it was released like one month earlier, when it was still winter here, it would've been perfect.
All the girl looked (that might just be my imagination) and sounded quite older, but they were all so pretty.
Dat engrish though, with the Japanese pronunciation, I heard "We almost riddled you with breads", which made for a hilarious image :D
Had a whole feature movie vibe to it, a little less wacky (a little) but had some feels going on. Just the whole thing was ace, I had to stop every 3 minutes to make a note so I go back and make a gif out of something lovable <3
I ended up biting the bullet and just used the Lazy Lilly subs which were great.
