Don't really like the Opening song all that much...
The CG effects used is pretty good. The design of the vanship seemed a bit weird to me, it doesn't need wings?
The way the soliders fought was weird to me too, I mean they just stood there and shot at each other? No protection?

But anyway, promising start, looking foward to more.

Old school rifle lines. >.> Weird to see in a modern (futuristic) setting. :D And yeah, the vanships don't need wings, they sort of levitate more than fly. More detail in later episodes.

what an idiotic way to conduct a battle. i can tell that its more of a ritual contest than an actual battle, but thats no excuse for actually standing and firing when you could kneel and fire (which makes you harder to hit and increases your stability for firing as well as allowing people behind you to stand and fire). ofc, if they were really being intelligent then they would have been firing from holes in the side of the ship that would protect 90 something percent of their bodies while giving them full range of fire.

i also have trouble understanding why the didn't start with artillery fire and why they didn't use it at the same time as the muskets. nor do i understand why they didn't make better use of the 3 demensional nature of the battle. not to mention the fact that when someone attacked them from above the first thing they did was to look to the referee and wonder why he hadn't called "foul" instead of taking evasive action.

suffice it to say, i have absolutely no respect for the commander of this fleet :/

Wow, this was much better than I thought it would be. Amazing animation, setting is great, action is great, and it just gives off this feeling while watching it. I think this is well on its way to getting a 9 from me. I can't wait to see how the plot develops later on.

"All's fair in love and war." But if that's true...then why is there such a thing as a "war crime"?

I just finished rewatching this episode just now as part of a re-marathon program of the original Last Exile series. I've probably watched it numerous times already, but this was the first time I understood why Claus and Lavie stopped themselves from grabbing their second sandwich lol.
Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do not be too eager to give out death in judgement. For even the very wise cannot see all ends.

Don't like the OP much.
Don't like the use of the CG much; I think it isn't integrated well.

Besides those complaints, I'm enjoying the show. I'm watching this on my TV with dubs, so I kind of have to listen extra hard to hear what people are saying sometimes. Especially that one soldier chanting.. I'm still not sure exactly on what he was saying xD.

What I LOVE though, is the feel of the show. It just gives off this awesome vibe. The setting's nice too, as well as the art. That usually makes me excited. I haven't really noticed anything spectacular in the BGM, OP, and ED, so I hope that improves.

I think I'll enjoy it. I just hope it picks up the pace soon and explains some things. I have a general idea of what's going on, but I hate when I'm at a loss without a grasp for anything in a show, and I feel like that when I don't know the motives of a group of people fighting. Oh well, hopefully it'll be cleared up soon :)

I have high hopes though, and I hope they'll be fulfilled!

Personally, that's a good start for the series. The animation is great and really impressive, the action is good, tecnology it's a mixure of basilar mechanic and futuristic upgrade but the style it's 'classic', simple and at the same time 'modern', not particular but really interesting and so accurated.
I will watch the entire series! :D

Not a bad start a bit on the slow side but the concept seems to be quite interesting so let's see what the story has to offer!

Well...I guess chivalry's dead. Interesting setting though it was kind of weird seeing the infantry using muskets.

Been meaning to watch this for a while now, already a promising start. I figured with all of their talk about regulations and chivalry, someone would stir the pot. Lavie seems like the more promising of the two protagonists, she's already proving to be a personality to remember. The scene where they see the results of the battle goes to show that in the eyes of outsiders, war is still war. Ironic how they dress up their war as dignified & civil, the state of that sole surviving soldier shows that it's far from a gentleman's game.

War is a totally fun game about honor, and any self-respecting country needs to participate, plus you get to use all those fancy weapons. That's what a lot of people believed before WW1.

I love the color palette, it reminds me of Kino's Journey. It's muted and tilted a bit towards green, but it's broken occasionally so it doesn't get too oppressive. The CG looks nice, and the steampunk tech as well.

I actually chuckled at the sheer absurdity of the infantry soldiers gunning each other down - and I speculate that it was the intended to be at least partially dark humor. Both sides just stood there and took it; it was a damn meat grinder. Of course, it was less funny when I saw the look on Lavie's face.

CGI was dated at times, but apart from those specific times the atmosphere and aesthetic was amazing. Really captivating start to a series, I don't think I looked away once after they took their job. Curious about their choices for partaking in war as others have said in this thread, but I'm sure they can be traced back to tradition. Whether or not this will be believable, I suppose we'll have to continue watching to see. I'm also curious how well the way this world operates will make sense, or more so how much of it is style over substance. Either way, great start. I have few fears, but nothing meaningful to say at the moment.

1 vanship (that red) can solo kill one ship. Why don't they deploy a lot of vanship ? (carrier ?)

Those musket lines remind me of the way the British used to fight in the American Revolution. It seemed like an awkward way to fight, but hey, who can say anything against chivalry?

Also since I'm watching the dub, it's nice to hear Kagami from lucky star again!

Okay so war is usually highly ritualized (to keep the body count down)?. But it sure sucks if you're one of those musketeers. This seems like something one of the countries in Kino's journey would do with their neighbors. Heck i think a much worst version of this is in that show.

Main characters, Claus and Lavie, whilst delivering a letter, find themselves caught up during an unauthorised attack during a chivalry battle between two factions.

This type of setting is pretty neat, and I'm a big fan of it. The chivalry battle makes no sense, but it must be an in-universe tradition to keep the peace or something.

Apart from some dodgy-looking explosion effects and some awkward looking CG at points, it was not bad at all. Looking forward to watching more of it.

So we have a Sochie Heim lookalike who's voiced by Chiwa Saitou, and a super rare steampunk setting? I'm sold on this show.

Disith ships are like bugs. I might've seen that somewhere before.

1 vanship (that red) can solo kill one ship. Why don't they deploy a lot of vanship ? (carrier ?)

It didn't destroy anyone though. Was used for reconnaissance.

Apparently people need to learn how battles looked like a few centuries ago.

It's like Anatoray and Disith are playing war under supervision of the Guild. You may as well compare it with a sports match and the Guild acts as an association and as referee. Minagith seems to be part of Anatoray. They were about to win the battle until the rules got violated.

Then we have the two couriers who ended up in the conflict while being on board of an Anatoray battleship where they were supposed to deliver a letter to the commander. I dunno what to think of this yet. Gotta wait for more deliveries and the unfolding conflict, but the setting has potential.

Oh and the opening is pretty nice. One of the few with a mix of 2D and CGI I liked.

that is the ABSOLUTE WORST OP i have ever had the misfortune of listening to. however, the episode itself was quite interesting. i'm certainly intrigued. reminds me of the british during the revolutionary war, when americans were like "screw lining up and exchanging volleys" and just went mad and did guerilla stuff. this guild thing is interesting, like some kind of overarching power that sets terms of combat? sounds to me like they play both sides and probably benefit from the conflict.

Nothing beats old school animation!

"What has become of Chivalry?!!" He really asked this in the middle of a battle? LOLZ my man, dude Chivalry is dead, haven't you heard?

On a another point, when are they going to stop giving females the voice lead for male characters? It is fine when the male character is 8 to 11, 12 ish. Not when the character is 15 years old. In this case Claus voice should have been voiced by a male teen/early 20 voice actor.

I fondly remember watching a random episode from 2nd season in animax back in 2012, such a beautiful ending song. Although I've the best and favorite picks from the Last Exile OST's in my collection without even watching the entire series.
I've been looking forward to watching this. High hopes!
