It's not a beach episode but we still got swimsuits because of the pool. It was inevitable this anime would have one of these with fan service although they kept it moody as usual.

The fact is, we learned that Saki even has her own favorite pool! Still, this episode was a decent chance for Saki and Yuuta to spend more time together, outside of their home.

So both of the realise they have feelings for each other and both realise this can't continue.
And now Saki decided to put some distance between them by referring to Yuuta as nii san wanting to make it clear they are siblings.
Now the question is how will this turn out will they live on as siblings or will they end up as a couple.

The trip to the pool, after some egging from Yuta, Saki caves in after begrudgingly have an emotional battle against her own self, with Yomiuri presenting her biggest challenge if Yuta one day learns of her affection towards him. And even so, Saki's always been about her family and work, work, work, forgetting the fun that she once had.

Even as a child, the memories of Saki being with her mother are so livid as a girl who has fun either by going to the pool or the zoo, now it's different with Yuta around, and at least she can find solace around him being the one who's always at the center, and find the lost element of fun that she had once again. And with the little bit of semblance, Yuta uttuers that he actually likes Saki. Switch the POV over to Yuta, and his view of romance, while definitely moulded by the failure of his family's marriage, he also begins seeing Saki as more than just a stepsister.

Saki praising Yuta all the more only solidifies how much she sees him the same way she does, though she was THIS close to a confession, but decided to hold back not just as stepsiblings, but even more for their newfound family's happiness. And of course, Saki deciding to cut her hair for character growth, it's the most clichéd thing ever, but her truly wanting to progress her relationship with him through the daily entries of her diary, she has truly come a long way.

Honestly, I applaud Saki for making her stance, but how much of the relationship between her and Yuta will be affected, only time will tell.

Sister-zoned, ooph.

Glad that he realised that he has feelings for her and for a little moment I thought we were gonna get a love confession, but it's anime after all. Still we saw Saki being more expressive today and her smiling was a beautiful thing.

I think they are both just boring, not special.
But they try their best to make this story interesting, so it is okay.

Well that was painful.

After both realised they like eachother.
Can't blame Yuuta Saki was looking so pretty. Both tried to confess but got blueballed by fireworks this time.
Saki then decided to lock her feelings and throw the keys away and decided to not bare her thoughts open about Yuuta anymore. She also cut her hair to try move on.
Yuuta looked so shattered when Saki called her Neesan. After finally falling first time he have to endure this pain.
This was inevitable but still it's sad.
Idc I need WINCEST ending.
Excellent episode best so far.

As a watcher, it was painful but it had to be done on her part (or at least that's what she believes to be right)

Im really gonna miss long hair Saki. =((((

ayo holdup.....
She initially decided to throw the keys of the drawer (containing her diary) in the river (where water flows straight, away from us)
but she threw it in the seas, where things when thrown comes back to us due to the waves....Is it symbolizing something? Or am I scrutinizing too deep?

You know, people have complained about Gimai Seikatsu being slow or the build up taking too long and I’ll never understand it. It’s this methodical pace that separates it from every other generic incest bait romance. These are actual people coming together for the first time and slowly moving past prior trauma, falling in love and not knowing how to handle that and no episode has done a better job than this one. Absolute masterclass from start to finish and so much I loved about it

For starters, the diary entry sequence was just amazing. We truly saw the most intimate and vulnerable thing imaginable, Saki’s deepest and most sincere thoughts laid bare. Her insecurities about Shiori, her conflicted emotions about falling for Yuta, her appreciation for how he notices the smallest of details and treats her so well, etc. Saw some people say the diary stuff is boring before, but this is lowkey the best part of the series! Characterises Saki so well.

That’s contrasted with Yuta realising his feelings for Saki which while a shorter scene, is just as sweet. I don’t blame him either. The way Saki was looking so radiant at that swim park.. I’d have folded as well. Too bad Saki went and literally sis zoned herself by calling him Niisan for the first time lmao. It also hurt hearing Yuta talk about his parents situation as one of the main reasons he hasn’t fallen in love before, very valid 💔

Saki cutting her hair at the end of the episode symbolises a couple of things. Obviously the whole usual trope about girls cutting their hair to start a new phase in their life and moving on from a breakup or rejection, but also going back to her routes like the short hair pic her mom showed Yuta.. as well as letting go of the insecurity she feels towards Shiori which is great for her tbh. I can’t wait to see how their relationship continues to develop

Episode 9, so far this has gone in a repeated cycle.

They get closer, one starts to like the other, then they stop and distance themselves.

First, it was her liking him and expressing her feelings to him, but he put the breaks on it, because they are "family".

Now it is him finally starting to open up and to have feelings for a girl, but she puts the breaks on it, because they are "family".

And the cycle starts again, they distance themselves from each other, but who is going to go back on their decision this time?

Perhaps both of them? Alone one night together and they give in.

Or maybe one of them starts dating and the other lets jealousy slip out?

I am not a reader of the written material, so just guesses.

It seams like one of those "are they or aren't they" types of scenarios that lasts the entire anime.

Also, she purposely cut her hair because she assumes he likes long hair, and she comes home while he is looking at a photo of her as a little girl with short hair, what is that supposed to coney, he is going to think of her as his little sister now?

This rocking of the boat on the waves is making me dizzy.
Note: I don’t lazily watch 3-5 episodes, biasedly compare to other anime, or unfairly judge by surface level similarities. With every anime I start, I watch the entire series, both Japanese Sub & English Dub, then judge each anime based on what they present, to give an honest and fair rating.

FUCK, I LOVE THIS SHOW! That was definitely cinema.

Saki's diary is definitely one of my favorite parts of this show, the way they show her perspective on things is so good and I like how we saw the pool outing mostly from her perspective too.

Honestly, I think this is a natural progression for their relationship, it's not gonna be that easy, they have to go through this. Though, I don't see this brother-sister facade lasting long, sooner or later, they really won't be able to contain their feelings any longer.

Personally, short-haired Saki is peak, ponytail Saki is the peakest though. Speaking about the act of cutting her hair, I think it means a lot of things, such as throwing away her feelings. She also thinks that Yuta is attracted to girls with long hair, by cutting it, she's saying don't be attracted to me. But, basically it also means starting over, we see her hug or I guess accept her past self, I see it as her going back to her roots, she's probably going to be more outgoing from now on, all the while locking away her feelings.

Anyway, cinema, peak, can't wait for the next episode.

Things happen so fast and the story gets stronger as time goes on.

Yuuta deserves this outcome after what he did before. It's good that Saki can enjoy this, it makes Saki admire Yuuta even more now. And from now on Saki will change and try to be a better little sister.

This is the most impressive episode for me.

Not a manga reader, but I figure this is what's going to happen next.

He's going to start dating bookstore girl so he can move in another direction. Bookstore girl unleashes her bookstore charms and nature takes its course. Nine months later, the baby is born.

Saki converts to Catholicism and enters a convent. But there aren't many convents in Japan, so she will have to move far away.

It's a happy ending for both of them. You are laughing at me right now, but when I am proven right, I will be vindicated.

End of story. 10/10

Then the bookstore girl gets sick. Actually, she has cancer. She dies leaving Yuta and her child. Yuta becomes depressed and neglects his child. After 5 years the child says to Yuta "Sanae-san told me, places that I can cry are in bathroom or in daddy's arms".

The direction has been SUPERB this whole series even with the Low budget/mid studio. This is a slow pace show, so I get why people would drop it early but the payoffs are almost always worth it for this type of slow building series.

I like that the pool episode wasn't fanservicey like what other anime execute. It is presented as fleeting moments of happiness with its use of film grain.

Also, Yuta has finally admitted to liking Saki, but Saki unexpectedly pulls the Nii-san card, a form of defence mechanism from what she truly wants. There seems to be a conflict in that Ayase has progressed in some aspects but regressed in others.

She is trying to repress her feelings for Yuuta whilst at the same time, she has embraced back her happy, childlike self. The scene where she embraced her younger self is pretty much symbolic of integrating (psychic) parts of herself that she had neglected.

The ending song played in the middle of the episode so it's just ending credits. It's now pretty much unpredictable when the op/ed will be play if they are jumbling it around, or if they will play the standard clip or to include some narration.

If Saki will no longer maintain a physical diary, and this is roughly the end of LN vol 3, I wonder what will be the epilogue of vol 4? Are we going to see Yuuta's diary?

Anyway, the only imperfection is the cg fireworks as they don't blend that much with the colour grading of the drawings.

With all the beautiful direction I am seeing, I can only laugh with disdain at the people with poor taste, who are shitting on this anime.

ETA: I almost forgot. Saki's ending monologue recited the title:
Gimai Seikatsu [義妹生活].

seikatsu(生活) is a word usually translated as livelihood or life as in 'daily life.'

As someone mentioned in this thread, this show appears to be a 'documentary' of their daily lives, hence the title. Perhaps it's not entirely realistic but there is an attempt at realism that sets this apart from other shows. It is refreshing.

For those people who dropped this show earlier, THE JOKE IS ON YOU.

Just as things were getting better Saki decides to take a step back, and also after Yuta began having feelings for her. If Yuta ends up going out with Shiori it will be partly Saki's fault for her indecisiveness and she will most likely have regret about that which is part of the title of the next episode (to be clear the regret may end up being something else as I'm speculating).

Side note, I thought Saki with long hair and her pony tail look better than short hair but she still looks good/cute.

Every episode the retrospection widens. Really unique. This Anime is pure Art! I really like how deep every scene is. And, I'm not buying this! It's a question of time, when their forced casted feelings will explode in front of their eyes. I bet the last episode will be THE ONE.

So in the same episode they pretty much confirmed to themselves they fall in love, but also Saki decide to force a character development to herself and just forget about it? i am not sure what to think about it.

RIP Ponytail Saki

Also have no idea where the series will go from here, maybe Saki will just lie to herself again, because Yuta might go for attack(?)

Again. Spending half the episode talking to the 35mm diary was a choice. At least it seems that part is over now. Hopefully the VA got compensated well since it sure seems the anime is mostly her talking lately. Congrats on doing an obligatory beach/pool episode without actually doing it too. Also, it sure looks like this is turning into a red string of fate story by having them all have met before as kids, which honestly feels a little cheap at this point.

This episode was the epitome of aesthetic, the starting diary entry bit and then the pool sequence, and man that last scene of the episode as Saki hugged her younger self in that watery background, this is art right here lol. And I’m ngl I am kinda sad we didn’t get to witness the pool goodness in its full glory, but what we did get was nice, I really loved the pattern on Saki’s swimsuit, as well how Saki herself looked in it. But really tho, the important part of the pool scene was Yuuta realizing he likes Saki, loved the “uh oh” lol, but in that moment I can’t say I blame him, Saki was looking truly beautiful and after she complimented him like that, if it wasn’t for the sister thing I’m sure he would have bought a ring to put on her right after that lol.

And just when the two of them confirmed their feelings for the other, the fireworks scene happened, what’s usually a climax moment in a lot of romance shows, and Saki backpedaled and sister zoned herself, and in turn this makes Yuuta realize he can’t be feeling this way about his sister, and thus the relationship halts for now, I could even see things ending here for good with the romance between the two of them but you know that ain’t happening lol, this is merely a bump in the road on a highway full of bumps. And at the end Saki went and gave herself the character development cut which does look really good, but at the same time I will miss long haired Saki, as well as ponytail Saki which we only just recently got, and then she even went as far as to throw away the key to her diary to further show how she’s trying to change herself for the better (depending on how you look at it), but if you ask me, if she REALLY wanted to move on she should have thrown the diary in too lol, but I get why she’d keep it around.

But despite how things seemingly ended between the two of them in this episode, now I’m really interested in how things will go with their romance, they can run but they cannot hide from those feelings lol.

I know I’ve said this before but I truly struggle with their actions vs age… I love the show. The subtle things in this one are what truly make it shine. The dots of light for example. Seeing them on her hand and how it triggered a memory of happy times or the distortion of light in the mirror behind saki’s mom. Those are just a couple of examples. Another thing I love about this show is how it’s always fragmenting scenes as if they’re the fleeting thoughts in their minds jumping from one to the next as their thoughts race. The overall presentation is just gorgeous. I just wish they were older..
