THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
This show has a cartoony look and honestly, I'm not sold on it yet.

We got the main guy Hiiro showing up with his phone (tagged Shadowverse). He seems like a cherry guy with a friendly personality. As this deals with card game elements, we do get some gameplay. Seems the players have to use their phones to engage in battle.

Kinda gimmicky for the battle but I can get used to this.

Related to the franchise/game itself:

I'll get this out here; I can sympathize Shadowverse fans if this is not the "Shadowverse anime" they wanted and they're free to express their disappointment for that. (I would be angry too if a series I really love suddenly did something like this.) I heavily respect the original source media and its fans in that regards.

However, as someone who happen to be a fan of typical kids anime (more commonly called "hobby anime" in Japan), I really do want to enjoy this as its own thing, and not as "how it faithfully portrays Shadowverse".

That said... it's cool that Cygames is trying out different genres on their IPs--but this anime made me wonder why they wanted Shadowverse itself to tap into the younger audience market instead creating a new IP for that... Honestly I would definitely play a Cygames mobage with the same TCG-esque characters and plot even without the Shadowverse brand.

Maybe I'll eventually understand it, but for now, again, I want to enjoy this as what it is.

Now back to the episode itself:

I know that Takuma guy use soldier deck theme, but I can't help noticing so many bara monsters he summoned, perhaps he's into bara? LOL

Anyway, the animation quality is good both 2D and 3D. Remind me of Monster Strike. And the monster is mostly in human form/adult/muscular so it is a plus for me.

I have high hope for this show, despite the plot is basically normal toy-selling kids anime... wait... I love it because it is a normal toy-selling kids anime, I don't want to watch any violence in the show anymore! Real world is messed up enough!

As somebody that decided to pick up Shadowverse due to the downgrade of Yugioh Sevens what i have to say is im shocked. This art isnt the best but it did better than sevens. In conclusion I think this looks better art wise. I wiuls like to know more about thw guy at the end

As someone who used to play the game I just laugh at how both of them just throws a lone low cost card on endgame. That should only happen with very specific decks, and it's even rarer for it to happen on both sides lmao

Ignis Dragon is also an Anime-only card, and it's easy to tell since it has so many
good abilities with respectable stats (No-EP evolution even if it's hard to activate, AOE, and +5 attack).

I also wonder why anyone would think betting phones is acceptable. Do they not have rules for this?

Despite it I still really enjoyed this episode, definitely a lot more compared to Princess Connect's first showing. Ignis Dragon is the only thing I have against this show right now, and probably will stay that way. I also wonder why it's "Luca" instead of "Lucia" like another poster has said.

Looks like a lot of fun honestly, and interested to see where the plot goes. I can already see this being compared to Sevens just because of both being card games, but both look good in their own right.

Ok, but he really be using a duel disk for a phone. Also, everyone's deck is so bad, its like gen 1 yugioh with the worst cards imaginable. Also, the ignis dragon isn't even a card, that was just actual bs topdeck.

Wait? Shadowverse has 1587 cards.... What, it's NOT ENOUGH?!

You need to creat some shitty OP card with X effects on it...
Holy shit I don't see future for this. There were So many strategies and stuff which was ACTUALLY used irl game. Just use them in anime, don't create some bullshit stuff like this -_-

As a guy who has 900+ hours on shadowverse im really dissapointed by this show. I mean its cool to see all these cards getting cool animations and all but thats it. The plot itself doesnt even look interesting i might finish this anime just to see more of battles but thats all. I know cygames is trying to promote the game and not just make a good anime from the game story but man is it disappointing

As hardcore Yu-Gi-Oh fan disenfranchised by the newest Yu-Gi-Oh Anime series(Yu-Gi-Oh Sevens) this is right up my alley.

It's pretty generic but it's exactly what I loved about YGO.

I might even check out the actual game because of it.

From my understanding he went from finding a phone to dueling someone for a second time that day, who I expected to be way better than him via experience of playing. Followed by the revelation the other dude probably wasn't that good either. See what happens next week I guess but nothing to write home about so far.

the fact that guy lost to a 1st time player (even if he used an op deck), while showing off and bullying people in school ... whatever, not even worth saying anything :v

Looks more YGO than YGO Sevens which is quite hilarious and the production values are quite good. I'll excuse them for showing a half-assed shadowverse battle in this episode because they were setting up the world and introducing characters but I hope they show more of the rules and strategies in these battles.

This is an extremely dry cut of Zexal's first episode but just levitate some bad points that Yuma got.
Being gated from the game by family (check),
Some people getting bullied and having their deck taken (smartphone in this case, checked)
Main character got a deck made of crap but an actual good boss handed (check)

Yeah, like this, the same flow of Zexal's first episode. Doesn't help that it has the same character designer and some old staffs, but directed by someone who has never done a card game anime before.

It is a worse intro episode but bigger budget than YGO Sevens, because Konami and their production board are being dirt cheap this time and don't seem to trust their products.

On to the game itself, it's a boring game not designed with anime battle in mind, resulting that they have to skip turns a lot so as to not wear actual players out. This somehow gatekeeps newcomers. It doesn't help that they actually choose to copy from Yu-Gi-Oh! which has a really different gameplay. If anything, they should have chosen Battle Spirits or Duel Masters, but seem like they go for Yu-Gi-Oh! since this franchise has Western presence.

I don't like this kind of main character at all. And why they don't explain rules? It's not look like a show for fans, but for the one who doesn't familiar with the game it's hard to understand what happened in the battle. +It seems kinda rushed (he never played the game but already have an account in game and a deck?)

After reading this thread, it just hit my mind WHY would they make the protag a newbie if they're skimming through the rules like that. I swear 99% of TCG makes the protag a novice just so the viewers can learn the rules alongside him. They could make him a hobbyist who found the phone in the past and I think the plot wouldn't differ much anyway aside from...Kazuma's shame of being beaten by a newbie lol.

(Then again, eh, I probably shouldn't think too much because not that this matters as much when the game is more prominent in later episodes.)

I person can´t even say it´s an ad for the game because if someone decided to play it, it would probably be because of those cards that seem to be the main characters trump cards... that don´t exist in the actual game.

It's the level of bad it makes it good, the whole plot is ridiculous and it barely even follows the game rules and some of the cards doesn't exist. Everything in this anime feels wrong and I wanna see more for my amusement.

Honestly, it's exactly what I expected from it. These kinds of animes are meant to popularize the game they were based on, and they usually do a darn good job. I wasn't expecting it to blow the world up with just how great it is. it's basically a Card Game anime, and as one it's really good for a start. Cliché main character, cliché rival, and cliche 3d projected play but still more or less representing what the game looks like in fact? Check. Anything else is just extra. Not nearly as good as Cardfight Vanguard, true, but for what it is, it's promising. I think the 5.53 rating is unjust.

Lol, i'm glad i'm not the only one who has cracked up at them being so overly excited about low cost cards. IVORY DRAGON ATTACKKKK. And i'm like, bruh, you are losing the board and the dragon only does 1 attack...

I actually didn't know that Ignis dragon is anime only, no wonder i was confused, failing to recollect it from my memory.

True, how come betting phone is fine, when Japan is one of those places that i know of, that doesn't allow monetary gain from playing games. As far as i remember you can't have money as a prize in like an esports game, but you can give out some silly prize like handwashers.

That has nothing to do with this show being good or bad though, it's just how the anime community is. From when this anime was announced I KNEW from the very beginning, long before the show was even released, that the whole anime community would dismiss it because it's a kiddy show that's supposed to be about fun. The anime community just doesn't care much for fun shows and maturity is a desired trait in society to the point people strive for all stereotypes of a mature person and watching a kiddy show goes against that.

The reason I'm watching Shadowverse despite the anime community is because I don't care about such a dumb umbrella of connotations like "maturity" and also because I like fun shows. Card game anime of course have potential when it comes to tactics of the game but even more than that, from experience, they tend to be really fun when it comes to character interactions. Most card game anime I've seen have been the "come for the card games, stay for the lovable characters" kind and so far, Shadowverse had been fun in that area too.

I have been playing Shadowverse by a long time too. Few times getting Grandmaster, but back to topic...
The story in game is so good. I cried on Luna x Nicola arc. And what we're getting? Random C3 kids playing Shadowverse with cards that doesn't even exist and are op af. Sad. Basically spin off Yu-Gi-Oh!. They had one job and they instead did anime for kids when Shadowverse isn't even for kids. I know that playerbase avarge is young man after teen or adult, but come on, not waste such potential on advertising. Bcs the aniem isn't for anime watcher nor for Shadowverse players... just for kids.

Thanks for sharing your experience, i've been a solo player and never knew anyone who also played the game, so hearing someone's experience is heartwarming and i didn't know it can touch someone as hard as it touched you. I personally wasn't really much into story so i didn't get involved into it after i got my cards.

That being said, I think we can approach this from different perspective. Given that they do adapt the actual story, do you really think the adaptation would be deserving of the game story? How often do you watch visual novel's adaptation and see it skip majority of the story which leaves you in despair as you can't do anything but watch everything get ruined.

So it might be better that they didn't adapt the story if you look at it that way, now we can laugh and have fun over some of the silliness of the card game, rather than silliness of the adaptation of the story and your warm memories of the story won't get trampled on.

Quite interesting that it's got an anime now. (tho like 5 other mobile games also got a TV anime this and past year...)

Has a crazy hair, lives with his grandfather, plays card games... Yugi, is that you?!

Now I still only watched a single episode from Yu-Gi-Oh Sevens so I can't tell if Shadowverse is a better Yu-Gi-Oh anime than Sevens is. And I don't know anything about the source material, so the anime couldn't offend me in that regard. From the cover I expected a cheap Yu-Gi-Oh ripoff, and what I've got in the first 2 episodes was a fairly entertaining Yu-Gi-Oh ripoff.

I discovered the game on Nintendo Switch before knowing it’s a mobile game and the existence of the anime, so I gave it a try since I liked the first season of Yu Gì Oh! as a kid very much. I may have gotten older, but I didn’t enjoyed this one as I thought I would and the overall ratings are concerning.
I’ll keep watching a couple more tho.
