Nice, we're getting some focus on the Monkey Zodiac, aka Ritsu Sohma.

I actually find Ritsu's apologetic personality almost amusing at time, even more apologetic than Tohru! A bit too much if you ask me. The VA did a decent job at protraying the character though. Interesting to also see some parts of their past. Speaking of the past, the show still remembers the importance of Tohru and her mother's relationship.

Well that was a nice surprise. This is first episode that was pretty heavily changed from the manga, but I still really enjoyed it. The overall important notes of the story were still there, & I liked that we got to see more interaction with Ritchan & Mitchan. They’re adorable.

So we have the monkey zodiac in this episode, Ritsu. She's an amusing character if you ask me. I feel bad for the editor and Shigure was enjoying himself throughout the episode. At least the editor and Ritsu became friends.

Great episode again.

I think Ritsu's apologetic tope kinda got a little too tiring at points. His voice gave away the fact that he was a cross-dresser way too early in the episode.

I don't know how she does it but Tohru always knows what to say, it's amazing that she's so mature, in the sense that she knows what's truly important in life. My beliefs are inclined with her as well, I believe that no one is born with a destiny, pre-determined fate or a reason. We go through our lives and try to find our own reason, it's something we decide for ourselves. As long as we're alive, we constantly search and live for our own reasons. Perhaps, one of the most beautiful reasons a person can attain is to be able to live for the sake of someone else.

The ending with Ritchan and Mitchan becoming friends was sweet.

Great episode, like the usual!

Some gold comedy starring Ritchan and Mitchan this episode, my favourite of the lot being the fruits guide book bit book rofl! And Shigure pulling the strings, who else for the job, xD! Anyway, Ritchan is seriously too apologetic and the brief backstory was really sad too but it's very reassuring to know that he's finally got a friend now after those really touching final moments of the episode. I don't know about being as confident as Ayumi though lmao. About his gender though, I felt something was wrong with the voice acting and sure enough there was a reason. Poor Tohru couldn't handle the truth there, lol. Tohru with some more touching and amazingly appropriate quotes, I'm sure she'll be remembered by aplenty with the way things are progressing now.

Sad to know that we'll finally be into the 20s mark (possibly 1/3rd of the franchise) and are only 6 episodes away from the finale of the first season now but here's to hoping the remaining 2 and a half hours of content will be just as great, if not better which is always welcome!

On another note, have we finally reached the Kyo arc now?

Another beautiful episode from Fruits Basket. Tohru is amazing at saying the correct thing to someone in the situation, and I love that the show knows how to keep the focus between Tohru and the Souma's pasts balanced throughout the show. Tohru's relationship with her mother was truly beautiful, and seeing that beauty this episode was golden. Her words really resonated with me. The goal of life is to find your reason. One of my main goals in life is to be able to live for someone else's sake, I already do this for my friend's and family, but finding my person and living for them is something I hope to do. I'll have the nerve and audacity to live because someday, there might be someone who needs me :)

The comedy that came from Mitchan and Ritchan was hilarious, I was actually enjoying myself and laughing but also felt awful because I knew Ritchan only apologized so much because of what happened to him in the past. Great job from the VA, I almost felt my throat hurting from all the screaming XD

A great episode, I have a feeling we're meeting the twins next episode. Is that correct? I haven't read the manga in ages.

Ritsu's introduction is certainly... Memorable. I felt kind of annoyed with all the panic at first, but it's just depressing when you stop to think how he got like that, feeling as if he were a burden even to his parents. And thanks to it I could laugh, if only a bit, too. And I loved that Tooru took him seriously, I have no doubt the others are already "tired" of his apologetic way of life, but it doesn't mean he can just "get over it" while being ignored, the indifference was almost sad.

Tooru truly is an angel, and her words are really powerful. It's okay to have the "nerve" of staying alive, even without a 'reason' because as long as you are alive you might find one. As long as you don't give up the sun may rise for you as well. I don't like the way Shigure bullies his poor editor by the way, making a fool of her. And she was really extra with the rope and the will too, but I can't really get mad with either. I wonder if I will ever not feel sad each time Tooru thinks of her mother.

If so, they’re actually a year apart.

Anyways, to answer your actual question, assuming that’s who you meant, no they won’t be in the next episode. They’ve changed the order around a bit. Idk if we’ll see them this season or not. Probably early next season.

Ritsu finally makes his appearance and just like his mother, he has a massive habit of apologising and overreacting over every little thing. He's a bit similar to Demon Slayer's Zenitsu in a way. ^^;

But under that panicking personality of his is someone who wants to try his best, so Tohru's words of encouragement to him on the rooftop worked on him like a charm. He also sued Tohru's words on Mitsuru as they walked back together from collecting Octopus dumplings for Shigure, which made her feel a lot happier, too. =)

This was a nice episode, full of funny moments, hilarious facial expression close-ups and some memorable words from Tohru again. I'm looking forward to seeing the next person from the Zodiac next week.

Yeah, they really changed things up with Ritsu's episode here as it took me almost as long as when I did Hatori's episode from a while back to put together a comparison.

Anyway, this episode adapts the final pages of Chapter 43, Chapter 44, and segments of Chapter 45 to focus on Ritsu. Quite a bit was added, changed around, or removed for this episode; perhaps most notable of which being the expanded screentime of Mitsuru who only got a small appearance near the end of Chapter 45 in another of her moments where she is being tormented by Shigure. This might actually be of Natsuki Takaya's choosing as she did express regret about not focusing enough on Ritsu and Mitsuru's relationship in the manga years ago and having the Fruits Basket reboot gives her the opportunity to give the two some more presence here. It looks like the next episode will be on the Hiro Sohma-focused chapters judging from the episode title and his voiceover in the next episode preview. But anyway, here is the rather lengthy list of differences I spotted with this episode:

-The women’s kimono worn by Ritsu throughout this episode had a more elaborate obi design in the manga.
-Tohru’s recollection of her encounter with the Sohma hot springs resort hostess was added for the anime.
-Shigure coming outside to notice Ritsu’s arrival and Ritsu’s panic to this were added for the anime.
-The later part of Ritsu and Shigure’s table conversation got quite a number of changes for it:

  • Some of Shigure and Ritsu’s banter was moved to a later point in the episode. This showed Shigure chastising Ritsu for his panicing and reminding him he will be an adult in the working world soon. Ritsu apologizes for this. Part of this bit was removed where Tohru was thinking internally that Ritsu’s overreactions were how she could identify him.
  • Some of Hatori and Shigure’s conversation points with Ritsu from Chapter 45 were moved to this point in which Shigure tells Ritsu he has to learn not to overreact and Ritsu acknowledging he wants to be confident like Ayame, before being chastised for it by Shigure.
  • The point where Shigure tells Ritsu he’s barred from panicing while at his house was added for the anime.
  • The later part of this scene was quite different in the manga. Following the point where Tohru remarked on Ritsu’s smile, Tohru was thinking that she still had two more cursed Sohma members to meet (Hiro’s introduction in the manga took place earlier than Ritsu). Shigure told Tohru she could go ahead and change out of her school clothes. Being alone together, Shigure asked Ritsu if he was going to continue wearing women’s clothes into college, with Ritsu saying probably yes and apologizing for it.

-Because the anime chose to deviate from the manga in its focus on Ritsu striking up conversation with Yuki and Kyo while trying not to panic, this results in a good part of the middle section of Chapter 44’s events being changed or removed. Differences to note from this point:

  • Kyo did not appear at all throughout Chapter 44’s events.
  • Tohru was not present since Shigure excused her to change out of her school clothes at this point.
  • Yuki did not have a backpack on his back when arriving home in the manga.
  • While Yuki’s conversation with Ritsu included the part where Ritsu commented Yuki was looking more like Ayame and a disgusted Yuki leaves the scene, this was expanded a bit more in the manga as Yuki remarked that Ritsu hadn’t changed a bit. As Ritsu panicked from this and was going to strip out of his women’s kimono, Shigure poked him in the armpit with his fan to calm Ritsu down.
  • The circumstances that lead Ritsu to transform are also different in the manga. After Tohru changes her clothes and sees Yuki, they talk about events at the school from Chapter 43 (which I won’t spoil for now). Ritsu sees them and says he is going to leave as he doesn’t want to further inconvenience them. While preparing to give them a plate as a gift, he accidentally drops it and starts to panic again. This leads him to slip and as Tohru catches him from falling, he transforms into a monkey. One of Tohru’s hands wind up getting cut from the broken glass as she fell to the floor and the sight of blood coming from the cut causes Ritsu to panic again.

-Tohru is wearing a more simpler shirt and a shorter skirt for casual clothes in the manga.
-In the manga, Yuki and Shigure told Tohru about Ritsu’s situation while Yuki bandaged up Tohru’s hand. While Shigure still provides some explanation for the anime, Ritsu goes into greater detail on why he cross-dresses than what the manga covers. The table conversation about Ritsu’s cross-dressing was added for the anime. The flashback showing a younger Ritsu trying on a dress at Kagura’s house was actually shown in Chapter 45.
-Mitsuru has a more larger presence during Ritsu’s visit at Shigure’s house for the anime compared to the manga and appears a bit earlier as well. This leads to a decent amount of anime-only content being added in an expanded side plot where Shigure tries to deter Mitsuru and uses Ritsu at one point to try getting her to leave. In the manga, she appears close to the end of Chapter 45 as she is writing up a suicide note to her parents due to Shigure continuing to torment her before Tohru, Shigure, and Ritsu arrive home to see her.
-While trying to commit suicide on Shigure’s rooftop, Ritsu was shown being in a dress shirt and pants in the manga instead of still being in his women’s kimono. Also his reasons for committing the act are different as well between the anime and manga, resulting in a decent number of dialogue changes between the mediums to show this.
-A good chunk of the dialogue expressed by Tohru and Ritsu during Ritsu’s suicide attempt came from Chapter 45 while they were walking together. This includes Ritsu explaining the problems he has caused for his parents and Tohru trying to express to him that he does have worth to himself and others. In addition, Tohru was not up on the roof of Shigure’s house while trying to reason with Ritsu in the manga.
-Instead of Tohru, Ritsu was shown to have a close call falling from the roof in the manga before he pulled himself back up, only to sprain his ankle.
-The final part of the episode depicting Shigure reworking on his manuscript and Ritsu and Mitsuru getting him takoyaki were anime additions.
-Instead of Mitsuru accompanying Ritsu to get takoyaki in the anime, Ritsu was getting it himself in the manga before Tohru encountered him on her way home from school and accompanied him back to Shigure’s house. This point was where more details on Ritsu’s personal issues and Tohru’s counseling to him was shown in the manga instead of during Ritsu’s suicide attempt in the anime.
-Because of how Ritsu’s character focus was depicted for this episode, a number of scenes from Chapter 45 are removed. Notable ones not covered up above include:

  • Hatori would come to Shigure’s house later in Chapter 44 to check on Ritsu’s ankle sprain when he was originally called by Shigure to check on Tohru’s cut. In the following chapter, he is there for breakfast and samples some of the food Tohru is preparing. Shigure jokes about Tohru being his wife and trying to annoy Hatori with the teasing before an annoyed Kyo arrives on the scene, threatening to pummel him.
  • Following his venting at Shigure, Kyo wonders why there is no milk. This leads a panicing Ritsu to arrive on scene and apologize for using the milk for his cereal, with the resulting outburst waking Yuki up and causing Ritsu to get further worked up before Shigure subdues him.
  • Hatori and Shigure have a conversation with Ritsu about learning to develop greater self-confidence following his outbursts. As mentioned from earlier, parts of the conversation were used for Shigure and Ritsu’s conversation about his faults in the anime.
  • Tohru, Yuki, and Momiji have lunch on the school rooftop where they talk about Ritsu and Haru’s involvement with events from Chapter 43 (which I again won’t be spoiling for now).

Does Ritchan share same Seiyuu with Zenitsu from Kimetsu no Yaiba? They sounded alike and they're pretty much loud and apologetic lmao.

Quite the fun episode, until the feels struck. Poor Ritchan. Tohru's character has been improving a lot in this second half, she's not just adorable, but acts like a bridge to the Soma Family, slowly helping them as she knows more about them while she also seeks her own reason. This might be one of the best Shoujo of the decade.

So here's a question for the manga readers. In the first adaptation there was an episode (no. 18) dedicated to the best girl, Hanajima. Was this anime only filler or is it yet to come? I mean Uotani has had 2 episodes dedicated to her in this adaptation and whilst I agree she probably has the more compelling story it's only right that Hanajima gets at least one episode, right!

Kind of an awkward dissonance this episode with how comedic and goofy it was in the first half to suddenly transform into super serious and dramatic. Especially when there were so many "Editor is gonna kill herself" gags leading into an actual serious suicide scenario. I liked the comedy and first half, but this caused me to not really care about the drama.

Excellent episode, this remake is a masterpiece, it's pretty much like Full Metal Alchemist Brotherwood, everything is so good, suprising and better than the previous version, much better especially when it comes to the characters and the plot.

Hum, this Ritsu is the Monkey representative... I would not have guessed, like he is a bit clumsy and loudy, but not so close the his zodiac animal. Actually, many other characters don't have much in common with their relative signs, except for Kagura who should be the most "impregnated" by her spirit animal.

Anyway, this episode was great, with another character discovered & who has a certain style.

As Kisa1208 mentioned, the episode's plot in question is adapted from the manga, Chapter 29 to be precise. However, they expanded the story a good amount so it would be able to fill a full TV episode.

So they wedged in the Monkey panic Ritsu now. This Shigure who always likes to make fun of people...to Ritsu who's kinda like Demon Slayer's Zenitsu in a way, who can't get things right.

So a tomboy huh...wearing girls' clothing is his comfort zone.

And expanding upon the manga with Tohru's usual touche of life to Ritsu seems self-explanatory, to finding a purpose in life. The useless, low self-esteem Monkey is now no longer the coward he is. All he needs is someone to confide with. He still looks like a girl though whew.

The change was adding Shigure's editor into the picture while grazing upon the manga, and aside from how it was displayed, I'd guess this is fine too since the manga really just touch upon him in the slightest way possible, but this episode gave him such juxtaposition that really made him such an entertaining character. Good job.

I liked how the show leans towards motivating viewers with each episode and character. This time around it encouraged against people who can't go on and feel needless to live. Ritsu was an alright character though, I hope him and Mitsuru can become closer- which I know won't be televized.

This show always gives me the feels - I love it so much! I was chuckling at Shigure being kind of a little shit, tricking Ritsu into trying to get rid of the editor, and then laughing at Ritsu’s fruit books and innocent words to Yuki and Kyou that really DID irritate them. But then when he messed up the manuscript and was so depressed, standing on the roof wondering why he was alive or even born, here is our best girl Tohru with the most beautiful words again that really just hit home, leaving everyone’s eyes wide and mouths hanging open with awe. The friendship between Ritsu and Mitsuru was very sweet, too. I hope they both find that person who needs them - maybe even each other!

Stop. Introducing. Annoying. Characters.

Seriously, why are 80% of the characters in this show so over-the-top and annoying? That nonsense was way, way too much for before the OP. And then it continued throughout. I'm honestly kind of impressed this show can constantly one-up itself on how annoying it can make characters. And I've never known a show to have so many annoying characters to work with.

It's honestly frustrating cos this show has a really good handle on its dramatic side (as was again on show in the second half of this episode), but the comedy and over-the-top characters doesn't work at all and makes it really hard to enjoy the rest sometimes.

Wow hold on, that editor and the rope caught me off-guard, what the hell?
Actually, scratch that, then Ritsu on the roof, what's with the episode being so heavy on suicide? :/

Either way, when Tohru got onto the roof, she gave quite the powerfull speech, but damn did my heart drop when Tohru fell due to that roof tile.

Kinda glad Ritsu & Mitsuru became friends at the end.

Shigure's SO freaking mean....downright evil, really...but I can't stop laughing at his evilness at the same time. xD

THE COFFEE ON THE MANUSCRIPT NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO XD things like that make me cringe so hard...just the thought of losing all that work.... GUYS, GUYS......this is why you should use a computer to write. BACK-UP FILES!!!

.....but as you can see, Furuba doesn't rely on electronics much, since it takes place in the 90s. Refreshing for this day and age, especially compared to other 'new' anime...but at times of crisis like coffee spills, you can't help but think,

man, how inconvenient. OTL

@Atavistic

Kagura's the only one I find truly annoying (seriously want to punch her in the face) but if drama is what you want, you're in for a major treat for season one's finale....

Oh cool, we cannot have an anime without a trap and this time, it's Ritsu the monkey! Poor Mitchan; she's actually one of my favorite characters tbh

Man, this episode is surprisingly annoying, especially the loud ones (Ritsu and Mitchan) =_= but I made it... *sigh*

I was surprised to see a combo of Bifauxen and Otokonoko here. Nice!

ehhhh this is the first episode so far where I didn't get emotional like it was intended.. Can't take Ritchan seriously, then you have Tohru getting all sensitive and crying.. lol

The end was so cure and pure <3

Can't deny it, I ship Ritchan and Mitchan so hard that my ancestors can feel it.

Tbh, there were times when Ritchan's over-the-top apologies made my eyes roll but he's cute and looks cute when he's together's with Mitchan. Guessing Mitchan is older since she's already working and Ritchan is just about to enter the workforce.
