Great series overall 8/10

I really want to go and buy the manga now, I'm sure this series was just a small taste of what it can offer.

7/10 A fair collection of stories. a fair watch that shined in places and weak in others. Glad I watched it, not a rewatch though.

This was a pretty bad adaptation of the manga. The stories were super-condensed and they made the character designs generic. On top of that, they took out my favorite part from Future the segment with the slug-people.

Awful compared to the manga. The message wasn't even the same. I guess the original was too critical for them so they went with something nicer. Bleh.

That was weird. I like his manga but this adaption didn't feel right. For a one cour, why did they have so many arcs? It felt so disconnected and the male characters were always so similar and generic.

I wish Masato could have created life during his six millions years, that would have been more science-fictiony, instead of ending on a buddhist inspired cycle. Especially since it's humankind again, I'm not feeling the mighty creativity of the universe, I would have prefer things that evolved from human-moopie hybrids.

Anyway, very good series: every arc was original and well paced, nice ost. Gonna try and watch the 4 movies now (I didn't read the manga).

This adaption pretty much removes a bunch of the bad writing that unfortunately plagued the original manga. The Chihiro chapter was so bad the anime couldn't even fix it, though.

The Strange Creatures chapter was greatly improved by not spelling everything out for the reading and overall being more subtle.

The final two episodes removed the pointless dozen or so pages involving a race of snails and made for a less campy experience.

The chapters involving the wolf man were improved by removing the future parts. Many pointless characters from the manga were given more roles and the spirits weren't suddenly shafted away until the end mid-way through the story. Also, the love interest is actually combat capable. The story is also far better paced. It is sad they didn't tie the story in with the Strange Creatures chapter and the Phoenix taking the humanoid form from the Uchuu chapter, but then again the anime didn't cover that chapter, which imo, was far better than everything else in the manga.
The legal age of consent in Japan is 13, so shota is totally legal in Japan. In some western countries shota might be considered child porn.

Hmm I guess this adaptation wasn't that good based on the comments here. I have to read the manga eventually. I enjoyed the anime nonetheless. I didn't want to read the manga because of the incomplete story but I guess I'll have to.
9/10 anyway.

Not really that great collection of stories but i liked the sound direction and the author's philosophies of each story anyway. Pretty decent watch.

I felt that Masato, the hero of this arc, was too emotional and stressed out by comparison with Inu-gami from the previous arc. But if I think about it, during this series, the heroes of the past were always more composed than the heroes of the future. I tend to believe it was done on purpose. I also tend to believe that this last arc was a little bit rushed and I'm not sure I grabbed correctly the message. Those that have commented that this series doesn't cover the complexity of the manga may be right.

Anyway, even if the stories of this series are not related, I feel that there is one single message transmitted through them and I feel that there is something common between them. Sometimes I felt like in a loop with the same characters and the same challenges. I think someone else have also commented something similar. But even if this stereotipy may not be found in the manga, I find it a good way to express a common aspect and a single idea through different stories.

After I finish the OVAs too I'm really curious to read the manga. At this point I feel that I'm close to understanding what Osamu Tezuka meant, but I'm still not there yet. There's something very deep to his philosophy as depicted in Hi no tori.

This message is most strongly conveyed in the manga's Inugami arc.

Thank you for letting me know! I have started reading the manga only recently, so I had no idea. Yet, I've heard that the manga's Inugami arc is more complex than the anime one.

Wow that quite a special end for this anime but I liked it, sure that it was really original overall, some stories were quite boring but most of them were good!

Haven't read the manga and probably never will (maybe I will)

But that was something special tha only a special artist could have cooked up. I did NOT foresee Masato's arc being that long and that fascinating, THAT powerful! Wow. This was a masterpiece of a show.

I was never bored throughout the series. I was enthralled the entire time. I never binge watch shows but I did so for Phoenix.

damn, they didn't adapt the entire Phoenix message in the future. i loved that part.

overall this series is okay, it had its moments where its shows that cramming material is harder than it looks.

Man this shit was depressing and cynical, pacing for most stories was way too fast to feel any development, the story overall was awkward, characters felt incredibly flat, and everything was too rushed for a 13 episode anime. An interesting concept but way too condensed.

Animation was great though.

Well I see why this anime barely has 10K members.
