Really enjoyed first episode, the pace is really good and even if everything cant be understood and was confusing me, I really liked this spiral universe and the "horror" in it. However, the next two episodes were really bad : animation, pace, story-telling, scenes, characters developpement, everything was appalling. Finally I was pleasently surprised by the last episode and the end of the series that was pretty good, the city being itself in a spiral of time etc... So great start, good end and horrible developpement.

episode 1 was great, 2 was complete trash (feels like a weird unfunny parody), 3 was good (not always) but not as good as 1, same can be said for 4 but the 'animation' for a specific falling scene was so trash that it ruined the entire episode.

Very low 8/10 or high 7/10. Animation drop after episode 1 isn't that bad people are overly critical. Also what kind of pacing do people expect from what's essentially a movie split in 4 episodes? It's not a long runtime.

The black and white theme somehow saved it. It could have been worse in a colour version with the current adaptation, imo.

After episode 1 the animation drops and if you haven't read the manga you will not be able to understand its story. I mean the story is good but the way this anime presented it is more like a random jump from one story to another

if only going by 1st episode bc the others are so bad I don't even wanna count it, the anime truly is a horror that actually tries to be horror beyond the gore or deep life subliminal meanings that most other horror anime try to be.

I thought the first 3 episodes were goofy but entertaining, and was surprised at how much I liked the fourth episode. The animation was not distractingly bad or anything, and people are significantly exaggerating. Are these criticisms coming from people who have only seen top-studio shows? I liked the black and white art style because it kept everything more eerie, even during the daytime. I think I understand the pacing criticisms of episode 2 because I did vaguely recognize that it was weird that it felt like more plot lines were being incorporated into 1 episode as opposed to the first episode just feeling like 1 plot line, but I didn't think it was a big deal since I also found the first episode goofy.

Overall, fine.

Great first episode. Even if some of the issues with the pacing started to show up here, it felt a LOT more deliberate than in the middle episodes. And, of course, I don’t have to mention the visuals.

Really bad second episode. More than anything, the breakneck pace that events happen at feels like a poor attempt to include every single chapter in some capacity, and it only serves to make everything worse as a result. And, of course, I don’t have to mention the visuals.

Third episode was, relatively, an improvement, though it still wasn’t good. Same bad pacing as before, but the general theme of “hospital” that all the horror elements had helped to make it feel less rushed, if only by a bit. And the scares themselves hit a bit harder, at least for me. Animation was also a bit better.

Final episode is the only one besides the first I can actually say is good, even if it’s nowhere near said first episode. Pacing isn’t anywhere close to as awful as before, and the visuals (minus the falling scene) are also a step up from before.

As for the show as a whole, I think that, even with the messy production it got, Junji Ito’s creativity still shone through. Despite the show’s poor execution of these ideas, I was still in awe at how someone could even come up with half of them, all with the centralizing theme of “spirals”. So, while I can’t in good faith recommend the show, I can say it has further encouraged me to eventually read some of his works.

@Zarutaku But this scene is faithful to the manga. Sure, badly animated to the point of looking kind of hilarious, but it's not that this moment, and many other scenes from ep. 2-4, were significantly and essentially better in the manga. Their only fault in the anime adaptation was how badly they were animated, that's all.

Many anime-only fans I talked to have pointed it out too. That aside from bad animation and wacky direction, the scenario was not as impressive as many nostalgic manga readers and Junji Ito fans wanted it to look like while jumping on the hype train. Sure, Uzumaki is a unique piece of a nice cosmic horror story and specific atmosphere that some might like and some might not, but let's not forget that even with ep. 1's quality, the storytelling's quality would've remained the same.

That's what many anime-only viewers I encountered told me. That bad animation aside, the later half of the show was a mess when it came to characters and the plot itself.

Personally, I didn't mind it while reading the manga or watching the anime, but I know that not everyone will find being caught off-guard fun, with seeing wacky elements appearing outta nowhere in the middle of something uncanny or gruesome happening on the screen.

The premise itself was cool and interesting. A breath of fresh air. At least in my opinion. What are your thoughts about this story's premise, if I may ask? Good concept but badly executed, or perhaps a concept that was bad from the start? Or something different?

I don’t enjoy horror for the sake of horror stories, so I wasn’t particularly interested in the series or expecting much from it.

The concept felt very simple or outright generic to me. Strange things start to happen in a rural/suburban town; one character quickly wants to leave, and others are ignorant and don't do anything about clearly conspicuous/supernatural events that happen in front of their eyes.

"So why did you watch it?" My main reason was that my sister is a fan of Junji Ito's works, so I decided to watch it with her. The fact that it received a lot of hype and was a short series also influenced my decision.

I haven't read the manga so... I went mostly blind.

Uzumaki was a wasted potential, not the worst ever, but definitely needed polishing. Taking away the weak and sometimes laughable animation post-episode 1, it still needed work in some aspects. A 6/10 is what I think of it. The pacing was weird too and the character writing isn't my thing precisely. At least the voice acting was good.

I am surprised they took 5 years.

I watched this a year after finishing reading the manga, the only notable thing about the manga is the art, the "horror" element is not very widespread in the manga, and the characters themselves are uninteresting, as is the story. The only good thing I liked was the art, but this adaptation managed to ruin even that. I hated every second I watched the adaptation of this, not even episode 1 managed to be decent, in my opinion.

That is, if I had watched this without knowing absolutely anything about the manga, I would probably have the same reaction I had, whether I already knew the content or not, I would have the same negative perspective I had watching this, Maybe the only difference would be the lack of seeing that detailed art that I liked from the manga could make me less disappointed, but I would still think it was crap either way.

I know that a lot of people are fans of Junji Ito, but in my opinion he is a terrible author for creating horror manga. The only good thing about Junji Ito is just his detailed art, because both the story and the characters he creates are, most of the time, more "funny" than "terrifying". To tell the truth, to this day I haven't been able to find any good horror manga authors.

In other words, the person watching should expect a messy, generic plot with horrible direction. And I don't recommend the manga, because despite not being "trash", it still manages to be pretty bad as a horror manga.

Not nearly as bad as the 5.96 score might suggest. I know, animation fell apart after ep 1 and writing-wise it isn't anything groundbreaking, but despite that it's still more interesting than the average seasonal slop; I'd put it in my top 10 of the current season.

I only watched the live action film beforehand, but I loved the anime. it was super creepy and produced several nightmares over its broadcast. I thought episode 2 was one of the scariest and enjoyed it more than 3. Could have been longer but for a condensed story it was great.
