It may be too early to make any kind of verdict and this anime will develop its slightly too standard premise in an interesting way but still, after the first episode...

The only thing I don't like about this anime so far is the slightly too standard motif of the loser who runs after the most beautiful and popular girl in school, and I thought there was room in this story for something more unique, instead of making the main girl someone beyond the MC's reach, they could have made her someone equal to him, a girl who plays basketball could have problems with being too tall for guys and too "masculine"(things like that happen), which would give her various complexes, here comes our MC who is a loser or just an ordinary guy and sees something special in her (just like he would be impressed by her hard work now), instead of just trying to impress someone out of his league, the MC could have just tried to make the girl realize that she deserves love (or something like that) xD

What do you think about this? Would this theme be better? Or not and will there still be something better with what we have?

If anything I still like this anime and I don't want to complain too much, I just thought about it.

Man, I don't know what vibes Taiki gave you, but in his setting he's not a loser or treated as such, nor is he an outcast or a loner. Hell, it's debatable to even call him ordinary, at least when it comes to sports skills. Maybe personality wise, but he defo ain't an underdog.
Now, IIRC the show does try to portray Chinatsu as being out of Taiki's league a bit, but mostly from Taiki's own perspective.

What I can see may cause a bit of beef in some people going forward, is that the anime (well, the manga) is very light on drama and most of it gets resolved very quickly and nonchalantly. But then again, maybe some other people will love it for that. Let's wait and see.

you’re jumping the gun. the mc is absolutely not a loser and the fmc is not out of his reach. if you like sweet romance, just let it play out.

This is like the MOST average plotlinr ever, but it's 25 episodes long
I don't really see too many romance anime past 12-13 episodes, so I'm still kinda curious about it

@nathh ok...loser is too big a word, but I also mentioned that he is an average guy who is clumsy in contacts with girls, he ends up the same as every MC of this type, he tries to get with the most beautiful and popular girl in school and he succeeds because "something" xD I'm not saying that it's bad in itself but it's definitely repetitive

@Menternor the anime doesn't try to present it only from the MC's perspective, others also notice that the most popular girl in school is out of his league, besides, it's probably logical, an average, a bit clumsy in "picking up girls" boy vs a beautiful, talented and popular girl. "Loser" is a bit too big a word but it still comes out the same.

If it's written well, I don't care (and it's even better for me) that there won't be any "big dramas" I like such cute anime, even such a standard premise can be presented in an interesting way. I liked the first episode, it was cute, I just hope that sports won't be so much on the sidelines of all this, imo romances that rely only on romance and don't have something to "diversify" them and let the viewer "breathe" are boring.

I feel like you're making way too many preliminary assumptions and going "hurr hurr I've heard of a setup like this before and I bet this and this will happen" in which case good for you I guess?

Also, reinventing the wheel for the sake of reinventing the wheel just feels kinda pretentious? Just because the setup is similar to others you've read/watched, does not automatically mean the execution will be the same

Not to mention exaggerating "average" into "loser", maybe I smell an inherent disdain of classic romance tropes and generally romance as a genre, not everything has to be an action shonen you know

@Ba-Cii10 It's a sports shounen, of course it's gonna involve the main character having to improve himself. Would it be less boring if he was perfect from the start? Sounds like you just replaced common shounen tropes with equally common shoujo/yuri tropes.

@nathh You know that not being your typical average MC =\= being perfect? In my example of a "more unique premise" they are both "average" I'm no expert on romance but it seems to me that the most common theme in this genre is "popular girl x average boy" and vice versa "giga chad who hits on this shy girl" so when I see something like that I automatically roll my eyes and it takes something away from this anime in my eyes, but I know that it's not bad in itself and this anime has 25 episodes to show something interesting, so far I like it and I hope it will continue to be good.

You guys already started talking shit about it just after watching one episode. I've read the manga and trust me, it will be one of the best anime of this year.
The romance alone isn’t that good and that's where the sports part comes in. This story equally emphasizes on sports and romance and that's what I like about it the most. Like you're working hard towards the game, and there's your love to motivate you, you need to at least win for her. That's what takes the romance aspect to another level. And the matches are so intense like, some might even make you sweat. And that's why it’s so peak🔥

@Rom-Com_lover I'm just asking if people like the somewhat standard theme of this anime, this is not hate, it's just the first episode and it could be developed interestingly, if it's true that romance and sports will be equal, then for me it's a plus, "pure romances" are usually boring to me.

@Ba-Cii10 Not exactly equal. There is more focus on the romance, but the sports do play a large part in their character development, both for them as individuals and for their feelings towards each other.

Also, the side characters are also pretty fun to follow, though unfortunately, I don't think we'll get to see much development for those until a potential season 2. Well, unless I'm remembering things wrong.

You understood the plot and the characters wrong. I don't want to spoil, so keep watching and maybe you'll get it. I would say this, the two main characters are very well defined in how they are for the rest of the story in the very first episode.

Blue Box is a pretty generic romance plot wise, where it shines is in character interaction and the way it builds relationships between the characters, which I'd argue is the most important thing when it comes to romance/sol anime. It's very much worth the watch/read imo but if you are in it for uniqueness then the only unique thing you'll get is a romance that actually knows how to build relationships and give characters realistic thought processes and goals instead of just shoving two characters together and having them having them fall in love at the drop of a hat.

I get what you're saying but I have to disagree with you in some cases -
1. Chinatsu will show some weakness and vulnerability, showing more human and down to earth characterization.
2. Taiki is not a bad badminton player and he will improve after certain chapters in manga, although the improvements aren't like some typical shounen sudden power ups.
3. Taiki likes her not because she is one of the most popular or pretty girl in the school.

Taiki is pretty popular though, not really a spoil but he is like beloved by his classmate.
And is over average at sports too. So he is not a loser, but also not a random.

The point is still working though, I guess Chinatsu is out of his range mostly because she is an older classmate and it's pretty important in Japan (even more when the girl is older)

@Menternor the manga being light on the clichè drama is literally its strongest point, we're tired of 100+ chapters of misunderstandings that would literally be resolved within a couple seconds if both parties had above 15 iq

Why don't you give the manga a try? It's faster to binge-read rather than to wait each episode weekly, and I think you might find out the answer sooner than you thought.
