2. CGI

Oh well, so the 1st ep is a kinda disappointment similar to Nier.

i don't understand people enjoying this this was a very negative experience for me. I like the manga, its nice, its creepy, its grabbing, this is just none of those things. the rotoscoped cgi doesn't look good in any scene and constantly pulls me out of the experience. why does this even exist? like genuinely what is the point? why does this anime need to exist when the manga is right there? The manga is more detailed, it leaves more up to the imagination, it is more suspenseful because it leaves the viewer in control of how the characters sound, how they move, how the world exists, this is just deciding all of that for me and leaves me bleh. idk man, I just think it's pretty bad.

well, I also felt a sort of "speedrun" on the plot, but let's remember that the first chapter of Uzumaki is literally 40 pages of Saito telling about his father's strange behaviors.

I'm honestly surprised by the dynamic and alternative way of this adaptation, accompanied by excellent direction and excellent rendering of the animations and atmosphere.
Nothing to complain about this adaptation, or rather, nothing to complain about this first episode.

Like with the manga, I honestly dont see whats so scary about this story. To me its just overrated. Its freaking hilariously in its exaggeration, so I guess its true to the source material in how not horrific it is.

Exactly, its pretty funny. Also seeing people get all scared from it makes it even funnier. Like yeah if this happened irl, would have left the town fairly early on, but nah these people stay there even after all the insane stuff happening. Like bruh, at some point its your fault for ignoring basic survival instincts.

People champion this as "one of the greatest horror manga of all time" and I just sit there in bewilderment.

@Jonchat In an anime adaptation, you obviously have to sacrifice certain narrative and suspense devices. The manga is definitely slower, with many pauses and more pathos on certain scenes, but in an anime adaptation, to maintain a certain coherence, certain solutions must be removed.

As for "why does it exist?" that's another matter.
For you, however, why should it NOT exist? It's an adaptation taken from one of the best horror manga ever written, by one of the greatest horror authors currently existing. I don't see the problem of an adaptation of one of his most famous and appreciated works.
If you don't like it, don't watch it.

welp didn't like the manga for this and seems this adaptation isn't gonna be any better but at least the black and white aesthetic looks kinda cool on screen i guess, and there's miki shinichiro as well. surprised they're cutting out stuff but it is junji ito so i don't really mind.

I like the animation style, I believe it is rotoscoped. I also like the way they are adapting several stories in parallel.
The only complaint I have is that instead of revealing the spiral obsession slowly they dump it all in one scene. Other than that I thought it was a really great adaptation.

As a massive Junji Ito fan since years I'd say that yes - it was paced and animation is... Different.
But guys, treat the anime as an hommage to something, that you just can't turn into animation properly. It will never be perfectly the same as manga.

Junji is an extraordinary mangaka and I think we will NEVER see a proper animation for his works, because they are set in very specific manga panels. MANGAKA!!! Not an animation creator, that's why he specialises in "paper" form of communication, where readers' reception is personalized and differs from person to person.

Why force more animations to come, if we can just accept the fact, that the manga form is just perfect for his stories? Well, I guess it's just fun.
Don't take it too serious people, it's just a little, 4-episodes long treat, but not the main meal. Junji's main course will always be what he's created with his very own hands.

Anyway, I enjoyed the first episode very much, because it truly resembles the manga (comparing to the other anime adaptions that came out in the past...), I love how it's black and white, the motion is interesting and THE MUSIC OF ONE OF MY FAVOURITE MUSICIANS, COLIN STETSON, is my cherry on the top here 🖤

Can't wait for the next episode~

I like the animation for this. pretty good start imo, even though the pacing was so fast. Looking forward to more!

@_K3i_ Yeah, I don't disagree that things obviously have to be sacrificed, every medium has its pros and cons and those are adapted when series are adapted into different mediums. But also like, isn't the point of a horror manga to be suspenseful, and those ways of creating suspense, those ways of achieving the core purpose of the series (to be a horror series) are lost in the anime, it means to me that this anime doesn't need to exist because we already have the perfected form of the series, and any anime creation is almost necessarily going to be lesser because it has to sacrifice the suspense that the manga was able to portray to the reader.

I ask why it exists because the creation of this took many many hours, lots and lots of money, and for what? a lesser adaptation of the manga? that doesn't seem worth it. I would rather see those man hours and money dumped into some project that is meaningful to the landscape of anime, that is going to say something and be something. And I get that that is asking a lot from adult swim given just how dogwater so many of their anime projects have been, but this is an obvious miss, failing to capture what is most important about the series, what makes the series compelling, and just watering it down into a different medium for no discernible reason other than meaningless spread. I would rather have 4 24 minute episodes that are just white text that says "go read the manga here is where you can buy it/read it" because it wouldn't be a betrayal of the source material, it wouldn't be a waste of money and time, it would point someone directly towards what needs to happen for them to experience the best version of this story that will ever exist.

Junji Ito is a master in every way. I do appreciate a lot his works, his abilities are marvellous. He is by far the best horror manga creator.

This anime really is like the manga, without any difference. Just 4 episodes aren’t enough, but anyway, the manga is not too long as well (3 volumes).

I really like it because it's supposed to be all these things that happen at the same time or with not alot of time in between them, in the manga it's just different chapter cuz it would be weird if they mixed up things but in the anime they did it and I think it works great!!! the only thing I thought was a bit weird is that the mom died later than that the spiral girl head died because the whole reason shuichi felt like she was a "spiral" ie because both his parents died from the curse. I'm really exited to see the next episodes!!

You're yearning for an incredible horror anime at long last? Junji Ito truly stands as one of the masters of horror. Uzumaki is nothing short of a masterpiece horror manga, crafted by this legendary figure. Each of his works sends exhilarating chills down your spine, leaving you utterly unnerved. He is the japanese Stephen King.

The animation style is so beautifully suited to Uzumaki, and the decision to keep it colorless heightens the eerie atmosphere and tension, perfectly aligning with the dark and suspenseful narrative. It may have taken ages, but the animation quality is astonishing. It feels as though the manga has truly sprung to life, right off the page. This is precisely why it’s far better to delay a product than to hastily meet an original deadline. This is the adaptation that Junji Ito deserves. Thank you, Adult Swim.
And Colin Stetson was simply the perfect choice to compose the soundtrack for this, whoever had the brilliant idea to bring him on deserves a Nobel.

I can't wait for the
, thanks for the meal.
@Yuyuichi u mean Mosquitoes 🦟?

I remember colin stentsion from Hereditary. That was hell of a movie, brilliant. The movie was freakingly odd, but the soundtrack was Heavenly.....similar soundtrack here

Guys, correct me if I'm wrong, because I haven't read the manga but I think this adaptation would've benefited from some creative add-ons to the story so it can build tension and define the characters. At the moment, the world, protagonists and tension and super flat. It feels like I'm watching a youtube compilation of "creepy scenes" from a full season anime, and not one episode that it's supposed to introduce the world.

As most people are saying, the pacing is a bit of an issue, but I do kinda like them covering a couple characters at once. The manga felt a little too linear at times-like here’s character A dealing with some spiral-related thing until it resolves then into character B now dealing with that, etc. If they could’ve done the overlapping arcs but still fleshed things out a bit more it’d be perfect.

Watched this at midnight and I have to say, I'm kind of disappointed with the way this was paced. while the realistic animation and rotoscoping was good to look at, it was rushed to oblivion. Everything just happened without any build-up or fear. I'm just sitting there, like 'Oh, that happened okay.' It's just a bunch of scenes mashed together without any structure. Azami's reveal of what's under the hat is accompanied by complete silence with no audio cue like what. I don't feel the same uneasiness as I do when I read the manga. Sad, I was excited for a true Junji Ito adaptation, but it is what it is. I am going to watch the rest to see how it goes. 7/10
@Park_Pierce I'm glad I wasn't the only one who noticed this! Whoever cuts their trailers needs a promotion- watch the latest official trailer on the AS YouTube channel. The silence that cut to that looping audio track when her eye started spinning sent shivers down my spine. Why that wasn't in the show itself is downright dumbfounding.

the impossible has just been achieved. A faithful Junji Ito adaptation that takes what makes the original so brilliant, but also adds elements that can only be done through this new medium. I was curious how they would do Azami being sucked into the spiral. Reading it, you can kind of get an idea how that would happen. But seeing it here, how her limbs crack and fold into each other before disappearing. That's what making the most of your medium looks like. Absolutely pumped to see the rest of it.

As a person who read the manga and watched every Junji Ito anime adaptations. I have to say that this might be the only CGI anime where CG is improoving the atmosphere of it. I will agree that this episode was kind off rushed and the impact of the scenes was a lot smaller then I expected altough I am interested in how the stories that are now connected are going to play out especially that the episodes are going to be much longer going on(at least from what I've seen)

I didn't read the manga, but I was so chocked, horrified, speechless, and all other words that you guys can think of.

I'm not so certain about the animation itself, and maybe was a little dissapointed, since it took 5 years for them to produce it... But ngl the vibe is definitely there. I could feel the horror in many scenes, and was terrified myself. I'm looking foward to see the rest of the story!
