multiple girls in love with you, a harem? Is that truly the ideal desired romance for the modern man?

It's very noticeable over the past few years that a lot of works have involved the MC ending up with a harem or picking up a million girls. They are all just fantasies of course, just fictional animations and stories. But the large support and interest from men have made them more and more popular over the years, and bolstered this trend that is not coming to a halt anytime soon with shows like this.

What happened to having a single true love, love at first sight, the romance your own parents once experienced ?

Although it (harem) is a common trope now in romance comedies animes, I wonder why the industry can't innovate in this genre (romance) and make something that really stands out. Because nowadays the only difference among most of these works is the situation (Futaro from Gotoubon is a tutor of the harem, Kanojo mo kanojo MC is dating all of them at the same time, Rudeus Greyrat is also another example).

Is it really just what men in the modern era want? To have multiple lovers and options. And live out this desire vicariously through mediums like anime? Because nowadays they have none/few ?

I agree, a monogamous romance is much better than a harem. Harem just means less character development for the fmcs (unless they want to stretch the story for multiple seasons). Plus they love inserting every type of girl into a harem, and having to deal with girls like Saki or Eris would just be a massive headache for me lol. Like especially for this anime, the MCs life would be so much easier with only Nagisa than having to deal with the others too.

"Is this what men want?"
In anime it usually is. Most anime fans are lonely men and want both love and friendship. And harem anime accomplishes both.

But as far as real life is concerned, there's probably no relevance in this debate. Like sure most men want harems of hot girls, but in real life most men can't even get one hot girl. And men realize this. They won't be looking to get a harem unless they're really just that powerful in real life, which is a very small minority of men. Instead they'll just be asking for one girl who's cute enough, has a good enough personality, and has enough shared values. As they always do.

Can't blame people for having dreams.

Yeah and Isekai fans want to be killed and reincarnate into another universe, Shounen fans want to have superpowers and beat everyone they see, Slice of Life fans want a real life, and CGDGT fans want to become a Cute Anime Girl

Don't worry bro, you don't need to take the genre and the people who like and watch too serious, it has nothing to do with it.

Maintaining 1 healthy relationship is a tough ask already. that said I love this show, mainly because it's just so funny. After taking a break in between seasons ive realized how refreshing it is to have a MC that just says everything straight up, plus if anyone has the energy to pull off a harem ending it's naoya, the guy has way too much energy and needs an outlet.

you can't compare GOAT masterpiece shows like "domestic gf" "redo of healer" to a trashy harem show 😏

Yes.

You may not like it, but this is what peak male performance looks like.

After watching that human trash, most simp of all males, Kazuya in Rental Girlfriend last season, this show feels like taking the most refreshing shower in my life.

Pretty sure spreading one seed as far as possible is the male dream. If you ask me, it would be to be catered to like gilgamesh also. The law irl heavily restricts such ideals since child support break most middle class and low income guys. Likely why baby daddys got to flee when a kid might come. Rich guys normally bang tons of girls. Men and women cheat all the time on the top of the social hierarchy. Age depleats looks, and bad genetics can turn some into sub five wizards. Only a fraction of men will ever reproduce dna estimates 30% of males. The rest never reproduce so it is a pipe dream for most to get a single gf let alone a harem.

not sure if this is bait, but the harem genre is an anime staple and has existed for a very long time, therefore i think it's pretty wrong to call it a trend or say that it reflects anything about modern fans.

if anything, i'd say that it isn't that liked among most anime fans nowadays and is somewhat niche, for instance the first season of the show you're talking about is like the 7th most popular of its season (with a pretty bad score in MAL terms), and that wasn't exactly a season packed with massive shows either.

i would also argue that the harem componenet in a show like mushoku tensei is secondary and can just be a part of the overall appeal of the isekai genre and not a necessary one at that, but maybe within the isekai context it's more appropriate to call that a trend.

having said all that, i personally don't find the concept that appealling and do find one on one romance more enticing and there are shows that depict that and many fans like that just as well. but in general, i feel like anime that is predominantly about romance of any kind, without much in the way of action or something like it become hits kind of rarely.

Typical harem scenario usually never happens in real life and it are guys who are simping over girls, not the other way around.
Harem is so popular because it is a perfect escapism material.

I'm a woman. I watch harem because they're funny, and most guys I know watch them because they're funny, not because they want multiple girlfriends. Girls watch reverse harems a lot, doesn't mean they want 10 boyfriends, and even though the toxic males in reverse harem usually are the most popular, its usually not the guys people go for in real life. What we like in ficton isn't necessarily what we like in real life, fiction is specifically an escape from reality. You might love lord of the rings, but few people would want to swap places with frodo baggins just cause its their favorite character. You don't necessarily want what the fictional characters you watch have, its just a source of entertainment.

Also there are people who live in polyamorous relationships, it probably doesn't work the same way as in harem anime. Cause it's fiction. It doesn't try to depict real life accurately.

Sure, some dudes who have never dealt with a woman before might feel like that. Especially when they're going through puberty and the hormones are kicking in. But rarely do guys want a harem in a regular setting. In these otaku circles though, you can find them as you can see some people here. The same can be said for women though, they do watch reverse harems too, it's not reserved to men only.

But that aside, the harem genre is really looked down upon in general even by the otaku community, they're usually called "guilty pleasure" shows because they're just there to kill time and provide cheap entertainment. If you want a different analogy, consider it the fast food of the anime industry. People eat it up but they don't think anything of it. The only harem I genuinely like is Date A Live and it's because it has more going for it than just typical tropes.

Anyhow, so to answer your question, it'd be no. No regular grown man wants a harem, in fact I'd say nowadays men enjoy their solitude more than before as relationships are plummeting lately. Boys whose hormones are just kicking in and might have a thought or two about wanting to meet women, maybe but that's because they haven't dealt with all the aspects of dealing with one. By their late teens, early twenties, men either want to be alone or might want to start a relationship with a woman but definitely not a harem.

It is ridiculous to think that all people want a single relationship and reject the idea of harems and polygamy, as if the absolute truth in the universe is that polygamy is impossible and wrong, and you ignore all the facts of relationships that existed in the past. And in the present

Harems and polygamy were and still exist, despite being fought in many works that address them, and attempts to make them something harmful and impossible.

Yes. I definitely want to live out a cross of Aho Girl and The Quintessential Quintuplets. I want slapstick stupidity to reign in all areas of my life and drown in four relationships at once.

It's comedy. It's really just comedy. This show and many others simply play on the ridiculous situations you could think up with this relationship dynamic. some other harem shows are really serious about it, but not the majority of them. And do you not have any fantasies that you want to keep as a fantasy because they only work in imagination? It's fun to imagine a bunch of girls going for me at once. In reality, it sounds like emotional overload and a lot of heartbreak and no real pleasure for anyone involved.

I can tell you right now that nothing you see in a rom com anime about school children dating is real in anyway. I like to watch anime as an escape from my bland and boring world. And grouping men as the subject for this question is completely redundant. This question could go for anyone. Short answer: not what I want ( seems like to much effort)

Looking at this from a more realistic viewpoint, I would say neither men or women believe in monogamy. Men with high smv almost always bang loads of women. The virgin men like myself fall for the facade of monogamy thinking having only 1 partner will make you loved more by said chic when reality is nothing like that. Women would gladly leave rich old guys for young studs with better genetics too. Monogamy is likely a religiously formed construct to raise a kid ideally and not put too much financial burden on the state/gov. That is my general interpretation.

That or the draw is being wanted by a lot of women, hard to say what it is that draws men to the anime. Might just be the fan service for that matter. I don't feel like harem anime have become more common though, there have been so many harem anime since at least the 90s. I have watched some, like Nisekoi, and some of Rent a Girlfriend (not the recent season though, as feel like it got even creepier). For Nisekoi I found the humor funny at the time, for Rent a Girlfriend, I was invested in the female leads' character development.

The thing that always bewilders me with all harem anime is just how bland and annoying the male lead is, like I suppose it is so any guy could reflect himself onto the lead, or just not think about it, idk, but it's so annoying to watch XD

one would be lucky to find a girl in real life who genuinely loves them for who they are, cares for them, respects with and treats them with kindness. one such woman is more than enough for any man in real life. in fiction however it is nice to watch harems especially in kanojo mo kanojo- the idea of two-timing and potentially four-timing is hilarious and lovely at the same time, love to see it. i just keep wondering how they gonna decide who gets his dick first, i mean however gets it first has got be a favourite or something which can lead to unnecessary drama. if only my man had 4 cocks.

Historically kings and emperors have had harems. Obviously if you're the leader of a country it's your choice how you want to live. I'm sure they had one woman who was their favorite but let's be real, everyone wants multiple options. If you had your favorite food every day, it would be boring. People want variety.

No? I think as the rule men do not want this.

It's comedic, that's all I can say. I don't think anime is a good reflection on the serious viewpoints people have about the real world

it's, to an extent, also saying that people who go around killing people on GTA want to be mass murderers in real life. It's not real reflection on an individual

It's not a "nowadays" thing. Harem has always been popular.

Harem manga or anime is less about actually wanting to have a harem and more about providing variety so more people have a character that appeals to them. Find me someone that likes every heroine in a harem anime. You won't. Because that's not the point.

It's also a comedy show. More characters = more different jokes. Don't overthink this.
