I still like how the explosions look, even better in motion. It's a shame the aliens did that to Earth but rather impressed how Earth managed to cope and still have some defense forces. Wouldn't aliens with interstellar travel have more advanced planes that cant be taken down with fighter jets?

The drama and intensity is high. I was wrong on where I though Kodai would be in terms of positions
, but all the crew and relations are pretty nice. I hope their interactions and development is really focused upon. That R2-D2 knockoff?

I don't understand why the Yamato looks like a last gen American naval ship. It seems awkward for space travel and fighting. Also some of the minor details regarding it and its development was odd
.

The music makes the anime so retro feeling, like its from the shows of the 1970s and before, wayyy before my time. But it kind of fits oddly. Ep3 hurry.

They're not really fighter jets, even if they look like it. It's nothing unusual for scifi space fighters resemble more than little modern jet fighters (cough Valkyries in Macross cough)

"R2-D2" knockoff is true to the original design from the 1973 anime. It's older than R2-D2 so you can't really call it a knockoff!

Saying Yamato looks like a last gen American naval ship is pretty funny because it's modeled after the original battleship Yamato (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_battleship_Yamato)

I guess someone might find it downright offensive to say it resembles American naval vessels :P :P :P

*****************

Another good episode I really enjoyed. I'm also happy to see this retelling gets rid off the jingoistic, right wing subtext present in original. UN and other countries having a larger, positive role is a tell tale sign as is removal of the historical flashback to sinking of the real Yamato in WWII

all in all, looking good looking good. Xebec's CG isn't really Satelight or Sunrise level but it gets the job done at least.

No complaints from me :)

>Wouldn't aliens with interstellar travel have more advanced planes that cant be taken down with fighter jets?

Apparently, the explanation (from the original series) is that the Wave Motion Engine also allowed humans to develop new weapons that could fight Gamilas.

>I hope their interactions and development is really focused upon.

Most likely not. In the original, the emphasis was on the struggle of the crew as a single unit. It's kinda hard to explain, really. It's more about the whole than the individual parts, although some crew members get background stories and whatnot.

>Im also curious if they have beam shields and other barriers.

Well, not exactly. The Yamato only has armor, but in the end of the original they have this "dimensional reflective magnetic coating" which was basically just an asspull by the writers so they could hurry up and finish the series. The aliens don't have shield either, IIRC.

>The music makes the anime so retro feeling, like its from the shows of the 1970s and before, wayyy before my time. But it kind of fits oddly.

Funny you mention that, because the soundtrack is the exact same one used in the original 1974 series. Personally, I love that.

>Xebec's CG isn't really Satelight or Sunrise level but it gets the job done at least.

The CG is done by Sunrise, or at least one of its branches.

http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=13765

I'm guessing it's a branch, however. Similar name, and 90% of the work done by Sunrise D.I.D. was for Sunrise Animation Studio.

----------------------------------------------------------------

This is a remake, and there are quite a few differences between this series and the original, so most of what I said could turn out to be wrong (Yamato 2199 could out to be like Rebuild of Evangelion, which I wouldn't mind...)

EDIT: Also, yeah, the explosions look way better than the ones in the trailer. I was kinda reluctant to see this, since the CG in the trailer looked like crap. These first two episodes were much better than I expected.

Good luck, Yamato.

I loved this episode and I'm totally satisfied. So we get to know that beauty from outer space was the queen's sister. I lol'd that pilot from the air enforcement had to beat Kodai and Shima up till he got his hand injured, later he is under Kodai's orders. I wonder, but I always seemed to like Shima's position more than Kodai's on the Yamato. Whole earth including ME helped the Yamato to set sail to space by supplying full energy, I'm touched this Yamato is the only hope.

The first episode was very close to the first episode of the original series. The animation is of course 40 years more advanced. I'm trying to track down a source to watch the original to compare versions as it goes along. Thus far it seems to be following a very similar trajectory, but if there were some weak patches in the first series they might be able to make some improvements.

I'm hoping we start getting a quicker turnaround on the subs, although this may just be the spur I need to get serious about Nihongo.

Update: I just burned off two bucks on itunes to buy the first five episodes of Star Blazers, the original English dub (complete with cheesy lyrics in the theme song) so I can now comment on some of the changes. They have dealt with several continuity problems and plot holes in the updated version, so I think overall this will be a much better show. For example: in the original Kodai, Shima and Captain Okita (with Nova (Yuki) lounging around as eye-candy) destroy the Gamilon carrier by themselves--the captain using what suspiciously looks like an early joystick to shoot the missles/shells himself. In the updated version the two main characters watch as the Yamato comes to life and destroys the carrier creating the logical assumption that it is already crewed by an appropriate number of trained personnel. When they do launch, it is with a full complement on the bridge and Kodai serves as a tactical officer while the captain behaves appropriately. The second episode in 2012 also appears to have incorporated both episode 2 and episode 3. I got the feeling that since the English version of episode 2 was short about five minutes of material, they had cut the footage of the American sinking of the original Yamato during WW II. (Note that this was in both the itunes and Hulu streamed versions of episode 2, so I think all Star Blazers versions are likely to have inappropriate (by American TV standards) content cut.

All in all I think this will be a greatly improved version. Since I find dubbed versions to be generally a little cheesy anyway, it's tough to tell, (Real friends don't let friends do dubs.) but it certainly looks that way.

More on differences. I've watched episode 1 in both subbed and dubbed versions, and it looks like Star Blazers was somewhat edited for the North American audience. It might not be possible to judge changes from Star Blazers so I'll keep looking for an online source of a subbed version of the original cut. Of course if someone wanted to pm me with a url, it would cut my search time...
Update: Although it is early on, and I'm still waiting for a sub on elpisode 2, I think there are some changes becoming clear. The 2012 version has updated the crew by adding more female characters, and based on the way they were showing interaction between the female and male characters it looks like we might have a little more romance added to the mix. While the doctor continues to be comic relief, it looks like he might be a bit more restrained. The robot is introduced in this episode and seems to be played more straight up (we haven't seen any skirt flipping antics yet--but it is still early). While the base of the story remains the same, it looks like an improved, more mature, and realistic version. A classic anime refurbished, updated, and much more in tune with the current state of the art.

It's not a subs related issue, thing is this is being premiered in cinemas and then released as OVAS a month later, eps 3 to 6 will be shown on cinemas on june 30th, so the 4 next OVAS will be released in July I guess (and the same will happen with the rest of the episodes).

Btw, great series so far, I'm trying to resist the temptation to watch the original series :P

If you do want to watch the original series, make sure you get an original Japanese version subbed, rather than the heavily edited and reworked Star Blazers. I had to resort to French subtitles but it was a much more enjoyable experience. Plus the Star Blazers version cut out significant fan service, the historical recap of the sinking of the Yamato, and small scenes that helped with the continuity and flow of episode 2. It also looked like the animation was much better, but that was probably an artifact of a European as opposed to North American TV scan rate or possibly because it was a Div-x taken off a high quality reproduction.

Is the edited reworked version the same from this site (http://www.starblazers.com/)? If yes is there anywhere I can find the original Japanese version subbed, not a bootleg please because I have that minus the 1st volume which I couldn't find online. I also do not want to resort to downloading.

I'm glad people are enjoying this remake. For those that haven't seen the original, if you've seen the original Mobile Suit Gundam and liked it, then I would suggest checking out the original Space Battleship Yamato as well. I mention Gundam, because the animation is of similar quality, although Yamato was a few years earlier. Yamato is probably a little bit more ambiguous than Gundam about its war message, though. Aside from that, they're different.

EDIT: I haven't watched the first season nor the second movie's English dub. The second season's English dub, though, is pretty good. Also I can't wait to see Desllock/Desler in this remake. >_< Favorite character.

Oh yeah, and here's a PV for part 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=or09dSlxltM

I'm very impressed with the attention to detail in pretty much every scene of this OVA. So far 2199 is very faithful to the original while introducing a lot of originality that in no way feels out of place. Its good to see a lot more women on the Yamato this time, and even some new characters that look to be part of the main cast. I have to say the biggest difference is that of Mori Yuki. A lot has been done to add depth to her character and bring her away from her origins as a glorified wallflower.

As far as remakes go this could very well shape up to be the shining example of how its done right. Nothing I've seen so far was in any way a detraction from the source material. I can only imagine Leiji-san would be very proud.

As far as I know, you're gonna have to resort to downloading fansubs. I know www.starblazers.com would love to release the original Japanese with English subs, but, alas, licensing issues.

From what I know, though, the subs for the original series are great.

exactly! i love the fact that they paid attention to the small details from the original series, but, at the same time, introduced new situations/characters in a way that makes sense - Yamamoto's sister for example.

ah, and the fact that they're using the original soundtrack makes the whole thing more special ahah

(also i didn't pay attention but they didn't mention that the ship was actually a remodeled version of the original Yamato? i guess they did that in the original, i don't remember)

It looks pretty good, but the show lacks atmosphere and the characters haven't had a chance to settle in at all for me to care for them. The consistent high-pace also didn't make the start that interesting with random action just taking place, leading immediately to bunched up interactions and characters who I barely know the names of. The singing ship flying heroically into a bunch of enemy vessels shooting off a shot or two before being obliterated was pretty hilarious to be frank. Not a fan of this type of direction though, and I personally have a distaste for shows with constant orchestrations that barely fit room for atmosphere. Might try the original sometime

The first two episodes have been fantastic! Didn't expect this to start like this.

And holy moly, the soundtrack is amazing. When Okita told Kodai that he led Kodai's brother to death I was like, "why the hell am I feeling like tearing up? I don't even know the characters yet.". Then I realised it was the music. Damn.

Was Akira doing "accounting" a joke by Kato? Her brother looks like Mamoru a lot.

I just noticed that the UN Cosmo Force insignia isn't just the actual UN logo but also has an extra ring outside the circular map with a moon.

I like how they kept the Gamilas language in the dub, did they have a language before 2199 came out?

A very interesting episode due to the many facets that it presents, this time it is not only reduced to showing the bitter struggle between good and evil, but also tells stories of ordinary life and the contradiction inherent in mankind. Some points in the narrative are not revealed specifically, while others are shrouded in mystery, all this makes the vision of the anime series more intriguing. The CG sometimes is not very beautiful, but not enough, drawings and animations, excellent. The narrative hides many small details that make interesting and enjoyable the vision of interpersonal relationships between the various characters. Someone said that Yamato is very similar to a ship that sails the seas, but the affinity with the land machines does not stop only to this, we could say the same for the engine designed by the aliens and donated to the Earth that in their advanced technology resembles however, to an engine very similar to the conventional ones we use every day, and the similarities do not stop at these, but this is not a problem, because in some ways, this aspect is captivating.

The Gamillas' jets looked like American reconnaissance airplanes lol. I can't remember the exact model, but the design looked similar to modern ones. I thought that there were some nationalistic vibes in destriying them since I've heard of this aspect in Yamato (the main ship itself is based on the real-world Yamato, u know).
The battles look pretty good though. I'm looking forward to learning more about the aliens (their language sounds badass lol) and some info on the crew since the guys and the white-haired girl that were briefly shown are pretty much nobodies as far as the viewer is concerned. They still got some shots here and there, although it's unclear what's the significance of those characters. There were also lots of these cliche "I'll definitely be back from this journey" scenes, I guess they are early death flags for some of the characters.
By the way, I expected a bit more hyped Yamato launch, especially in terms of music. It was good, but still. I got some Evangelion vibes btw, with all this "we need to use all energy on earth to launch this thing!" stuff. And the engine somehow reminded me of Nautilus from Nadia. Well, given that the original is older than both Nadia and Eva, and that it presumably had all the same elements I'm describing here, than it's no wonder they appeared in Eva and Nadia - in the end, Hideaki Anno is a huge fan of Yamato.

One little criticism I have though is the lack of proper ED, both in terms of actual animation (they just use rehashed scenes from the show, and not even fullscreen), and in terms of music - the melancholic young girl singing a song is just...not fitting for a military space show. If I were to compare this Yamato with my other favourite space show, LOGH, than the latter clearly has the upper hand in terms of the EDs.
