Damn... Because the scenes are so light and bright. I can't feel the horrifying atmosphere when Hanzo was beating (torturing) Gon.

I really forgot how impressive this episode actually was, great job Gon.

One Piece episode 914 & 915 & 1027 were a mistake and 957 brought the salvation - FMmatron

Was I suposed to like Gon because of his stupidity? I really hope this show isn't rated that high because of moments like that. 19 episodes and I'm still waiting for something good to happen

iirc the arc starts at around episode 40 and the arc starts at around episode 75 are the reason the show is ranked so high.

This anime is rated high because it's a good battle shounen. It has some great moments.
I think after 80 episodes if you still don't like it, then it's not for you.

Watching Gon get essentially tortured by Hanzo for hours was one of the hardest things me and his friends had to watch through in this series so far and I'm amazed at how drastically he was able to change the atmosphere in the room thanks to his simpleheadedness. While there are a lot of people out there that are better than him at many aspects, his determination is unrivalled!

Netero really put the participants to mind and chose the most sadistic pair-ups so I'm looking forward to the other fights but at the same time, I'm anxious for the characters I adore.

Really stupid episode. Gon's insufferable personality really came through this episode. Nothing is worse than a character who has no chance but will never give up. It's especially brain dead in this case, because if he quits early he has a ton of chances to win another fight. Hanzo should have kept going and broke every bone in that morons body.

This Shinobi dude is no joke, I went along the lines of Gon being a main character, so by Shounen's nature, he's guaranteed a random power upon desperate times, but so far, none of that happened, which I can't praise well enough. I like this Anime's approach to stuff like that.

I'm starting to get a feeling I disliked from Killua when he started seeing himself as left out with everyone's attention was on Gon, that's some Sasuke alerting shit.

What did it for me when it comes to this episode is not that Gon was stubbornly enduring Hanzo's attacks in order to keep from giving up, but that he wanted to work together with Hanzo in order to figure out a solution that would please both parties.

That, to me, makes Gon a one-of-a-kind protagonist. Sure, he's simple at times, but he has proven to be more intelligent or at least more thoughtful than your average shonen child protagonist (Goku in the original Dragon Ball series, Naruto, Luffy, etc). There's just something about Gon's psychology that is so intriguing to me, and it keeps me watching.

Not to mention that this moment lightened up the tension in the room, which adds to Gon's humanity, at least for me.

(Can y'all tell that I love Gon? Gon stan 4eva)

this phase is so dragonball, and yeah i'm talking also about the setting and the hotel itself, it's all so dragonballishi.
killua shows that he really doesn't understand anything else but battle skils, he even didn't understand why gon was the 1st in the list.
i actually thought that the duels settled due the interview, guess i'm wrong, and lol leorio is in the end.
gon so loled me in this one, though he didn't answer him that i'm pretty sure he was ready to die since if he were to die it's mean he couldn't live to his dad expectation, i just pretty sure that he trusted that he finally turn the tables.

Hey, so I'm pretty sure no one goes on these anymore, but I just have a quick question about this episode. Why did Gon refuse to accept his win during the last phase with Hanzo? Even Satoz says that Gon wouldn't accept his win.
Does it have to do with Gon's pride or his selfishness? I just need someone to explain why Gon wasn't satisfied with his win bc I'm really confused.

At least Gon won but that was a weird way to win xD Gon's torture scene was painful to watch, that Ikkaku Madarame guy is absolutely strong but I guess he has not Gon's determination

I gotta say it was a pretty good episode but I also laugh on the scene but I'm guessing that Gon abilities will become stronger and I'm also interested on Gon's Father he seems like an interesting character to me.

So if Leorio had stepped into the fight Gon would've been disqualified? LOL! If I was one of the other participants, I would've just interfered anyway, one of the fighters would've been eliminated (however they decide who) and I wouldn't even need to fight to become a hunter xD

This is easily the worst episode of any TV show I have ever seen. It made me drop HxH and tank its score.

The previous episodes were pretty bad but I at least gave it a km of shonen rope for how stupid they are.

This goes beyond all reason.

Before I start, I want to give props to the interesting Tournament System, Really cool system, I will probably use it one day for hosting events...

Moving on
1 - "If anyone interferes, the person who would be saved is disqualified."
Do you mean both you AND they would be disqualified? Cause you're telling me I can just help the strongest opponents to freely eliminate them?

2 - The match was completely decided within the first blow. Gon had a tremendous concussion, Enough to take him out for a week. It was instantly followed up by a second, then a third concussion. This is a 12 year old boy who just received 3 concussions. There isn't enough shonen rope in the world to let that slide. There is no training you can do to protect yourself from brain injuries.

3 - There is a difference between fierce determination and sheer garbage stupidity. Admitting defeat is a strength, not a weakness. This was not a DO OR DIE situation for Gon. Not only did he have 5 other chances to pass, he could easily just try again the next year.

This is literally Monty Python Black Knight, but in Monty Python they realize how ridiculous the Black Knight is for refusing to surrender.

I'm starting to dislike Gon. His "stubbornness" is nothing short of stupidity. He isn't brave or strong, just mentally deficient.

I'd much rather have a main character who can accept that there are people more capable than him and can admit defeat when necessary.

I love how mad Kurapika and Leorio got. I laughed when Gon started making demands, especially when Hisoka laughed too...

But that fight was so stupid. Gon is stupid and should've lost. Hanzo should've just kept on breaking him, no chance in hell that he won't surrender at some point, no matter how many shonenisms Gon has.

@NRNQx0 His pride and him being selfish yes.
It was shown with Hisoka aswell, it didn't sit right with him that he was just given the badge because he couldn't get it with his own strength but rather relied on someone else.

I think that scene alone was the catalyst for the change in his behaviour honestly.

Even though we see some of the torture on Gon here ... again I think the 1999 version really hit home how much he got tortured by Hanzo, the addition of Gon's loss of vision and hearing really showed the brutal beating he got.

That said the sudden switch from that brutality to everyone laughing at Gon's declaration was great, a reason why Gon was placed so high in the first place, his selfish comment with his presence and aura can change the atmosphere just like that which is impressive on it's own.

Oh my god. Honestly, this episode was really hard and painful to watch, I kept pausing every time Gon was hit hard by Hanzo. I could feel Leorio and Kurapika's anger!!! Even Kurapika's eyes turned red because he was so angry, even though he said it only happens when it comes to the Phantom Troupe or spiders. It's a relief to see that Gon still has a lot of room and opportunity to grow stronger but from this episode we are reaffirmed that Gon is a persistent and determined person, and I think that's what makes him 'superior' to Killua. Killua is cool and strong and even deadly but precisely because he knows he is strong, he takes everything lightly because he knows the instant way to overcome it (read: kill).

It seems that in the next episode it will be Killua and the long hair guy, I want to see how they fight... they are both very tough in their respective (killing) skills...
