That was amazing. The first episode already had a solid start, but it's like the quality and immersion jumped an entire level once the battle started. The idea of a trap was coming from a mile away, but the manner in which it was carried out was absolutely brutal. The moment they fell into that pit and I saw oil I felt a bit sick to my stomach. I've noticed this isn't extremely graphic in terms of blood and gore, but it knows how to paint out the grotesque reality of bloodshed and war.

I wonder if Arlan is a bastard son. But then again, the Queen kind of ignores him as well?

ED is still better than the OP. This episode was brilliant animated. Daryun is beautiful.

I think that Arslan it's not king's son, he might be related to Lusitania...
I was sure they guy that said to the king that he could go on with the soldiers was a betrayer!
Daryun I am in love, if Arslan it's a good Griffith, you are my badass Guts!

Andragoras is a fool. His pride overrides his reason, and he treats his men with no respect. A person like that in a position of authority is disgusting, a shame to his whole country. I do acknowledge that he had little reason to believe his scouter was lying to him, but that doesn't change the foolishness he displayed in his interaction with Daryun. Arslan's "timidity" in this case is more akin to wisdom. Even as a child he seems like a much more fit ruler thanks to his humility and willingness to consider other viewpoints.

I find it interesting that Vahiriz would have his nephew, Daryun, pledge loyalty to Arslan specifically. I've also taken interest in Arslan's mother now that Daryun has supposed he takes after her more. It seems like an indirect way to show us, the viewers, that they might consider Arslan to be greater than Andragoras.

Even if we didn't already know what would happen from the ending of the last episode, I think the current progression of events makes it pretty clear how this battle will proceed.

Arslan killed someone for the first time. Between that and losing all of his men, he's holding up pretty well.

The presentation of this show is unmatched. It's awesome.

I agree. The scene composition along with the OST helps make the atmosphere and mood much more defined.

OMG, this second episode was brilliant. It gave me the chills ^$^
The song at the end was awesome yet again, I think I may have fallen in love.
And the close-up on Daryun at the end of the episode was spectacular, I'm hyped.

this show is going full akatsuki no yona. not sure if that's a good or bad thing..

I was thinking there were similarities. I don't think this series will be as idealistic though. Seems more like one of the ones where they put the pure and innocent character through hell.

When the old man asked Daryun if Arslan resembled either his father or mother more and afterwards said he didn't resemble the King. I got the hint that the Queen might have slept with another man which is not difficult to see why.

This is why royalty should stay the fuck off the battlefield. The king is a brain dead moron with zero sensee for strategy. Probably got complacent because he thought no one could match his army of 100k+ people.
Matsuoka Yoshitsugu has hardly any range as a voice actor, and is grossly over-cast.

Yeah. I said it.

The king should have listened towhat Daryun was saying , he warned him about that but the king instead demoted him, smh

on another note, it looks like Arslan has improved his sword skills, still want to see him improve. He killed his first person today, he's learing about war firsthand

Ah yeah It makes sense now how they missed that giant fucking fissure in the land. The killing didn't last long so it didn't seem like they lost many men, but they sure got wrecked.

For someone that never lost a battle he sure is stupid.

It was because he never lost that wasn't careful enough. When things go bad you are usually scared of your own shadow and think everything that can go bad but this man had no reason to think of all the worse scenarios coming into reality.

Also all people saying his complete idiot are saying it because they are the idiots. The show made a very good job of showing he was a capable man that simply misjudged a situation.
He never seemed stupid at all. He had great numbers with strong men and his cavalry was his army strong point and the flat open land favored his cavalry.
Strategically things looked good for him so i see no stupidity in his belief that he could win.
Even before he gave the command for the charge he asked again if the land was thoroughly checked for traps etc so it's not like he gave no thought to it. Unfortunately for him the traitor was in charge of confirming this.

Without a traitor the enemies strategy wouldn't have worked because the king would have learned the truth about the traps and avoided charging. He wasn't some fool that didn't put men to scan the land or consider the strategic situation of the two armies. His ability for warfare was decent. He was just too prideful to believe that one of his men could betray him like that.

But when the people you trust backstab you is extremely hard for you not fall for it and fail.

Well said. It's interesting that even with all that pride and confidence he was still at least cautious enough to check on how suitable the terrain was. There was no reason for him to doubt his trusted comrade's word and even if they did retreat they still wouldn't know that Kharlan is a traitor.

That was exactly what I was thinking: Lu Bu to the rescue.

While it was entirely predictable they'd get slaughtered I figured they had underestimated their enemy, didn't expect that betrayal.

Predictable, because he synopsis has already told us what'll happen early on. Arslan had sensed that something was wrong, and the fog was a great disadvantage. Daryun already advised the king. But the king was a fool. They were overconfident and underestimated the enemy. Add to that there's a betrayal that Daryun had though. The king and his men were so full of themselves. Lacking in strategy is their downfall.

Arslan's first maiden battle got very intense. Oh boi. This is getting good.

The most stupid battle I have ever seen really with the sneaky ambush tactics shown maybe the first few dozens of lines would get ambushed and killed like that: realistic
BUT
as it was mentioned earlyer the Persian army had 120k cavalry which means the few dozens of lines who got killed were like 10k cavalry AT MOST as soon as the enemy ignited the oil pit the back of the army should have known what was going on and regrouped and they would have easily outnumbered them still... But hey plotarmor

There was a trap. There was a traitor from Pars. Fighting in the fog was a bad idea. SHOCKER. Daryun was right.

And it looks like only he and Arslan survive, out of the previously important Parts military characters.

Oh, and that temporary slave kid from the first episode comes back at some point, yes? I'm assuming Narsus shows up soon.

And the Kings complacency and arrogance has led them to disaster.

Very nasty trap, that must have took them a lot of time to excavate it that deep

I wonder is Arslan is a bastard..... and not actually the Kings son... based on the talk that was had about his looking like the Queen

The first episode set everything up. The parents being cold and kinda jerks. The three boys who were destined to die. And it seems like the enemy that believes in their God are crusaders going off their armor.

Daryun looking like a dynasty warriors character too and is very cool looking lol

Sick OP

In Prince Arslan's first battle, the kids who kept their loyalty to him all those years ago were killed.
Daryun knew something was up but the King puts honor before strategy.
Kharlan gave the King bad intel, what was his motivation? Was he frustrated with the King's backwards thinking (as shown by how he treated Daryun's advice) and sought to topple the inept ruler? Was he convinced by the Lusitanians to follow Yaldabaoth?

Vahriz must see the KIng's waning ability too but prefers to be more discrete, telling Daryun to swear loyalty to Arslan, specifically.

Novels I have read/am reading pending approval: since November 10 2022

Daryun is a very cool character.
I don't know how this kingdom can function with such a stupid king.
