I feel bad for Richard tbh. He just wants to do the best for what's right in his world.

Queen Margaret is no joke to deal with her own ambitions. Personally, I think Richard took a big risk when trying to get everything done himself. I like the tense storytelling this episode as it gives credibility to the overall tone of the anime.

Hope to also see Richard's character develop more too.

Another episode that felt a little fast-paced, but better than the first one. I checked the manga again (I haven't properly read it), and in terms of the adapted material, this was half of chapter 4 to chapter 6's end. Which is indeed better than the first episode almost adapting the entire first volume. Problem is, it didn't revisit the skipped content, on top of the stuff it already skipped THIS episode.

At this rate, it's looking like the anime is aiming to adapt the entire manga, which ended just recently. Which I guess would suck, though I don't know what manga readers think. Still, this is only episode 2. Hopefully it doesn't go that route. It's making people read the manga though, which I guess is a plus.

The story seems really interesting and while this episode wasn't as badly rushed as the first one, it's still too fast for my taste. I'm more inclined to go for the manga now.

I haven't read the manga and at this point I'm completely lost, I have no clue as to what's going on. Also what's with Henry making those weird appearances in front of Richard? I don't get it.

Makoto Furukawa's OP just sounds so average.

Welp, Richard's growing-up years only continue to be more maligned as King Richard only continues to suffer in Lancaster's victory under Queen Margaret of Anjou, treating him like the British noble version of Jesus to his death.

Richard's plight isn't all over, as the Lancastrians have taken over the land of York, and fighting to save his own life after being abandoned by his mother, and witnessing the death of his father. Henry coming to see and save Richard from the heresy of the war between York and Lancastrian, and it's not getting any better as he gets coaxed by Queen Margaret only delighting in the war as he trembles in fear.

I didn't cover this part before, but Episode 1 covered almost the entirety of Volume 1 of the manga, which is a definite no-no. This episode improved on the pacing, but all context of what was not adapted is removed, which is sad. Seems like this 2-cour series will be binging on the recently finished manga from start to finish.

Richard is cool but the animation sucks hard. What’s up with them not animating their faces? It’s all basically moving pictures :P

Maybe I'm a fool for not be able to appreciate this (tho it's a given for some things...) but I'm starting to think that the art style doesn't fit as much as with the story, like the shots with black and magenta colors which felt out of place to me. Story wise yeah, felt rushed. And at the end, did (s)he kissed the chopped head of his (her) father?

NGL I'm really invested in the story, the pacing feels a bit off I can feel it and the manga readers have the same thought but its just 2 ep and MAL has listed 24 so I'm not thinking of this as a bad show till now.
But for the animation why do they have so many stills it looks like a PPT with cheap animations in it a lot of scenes but the few places there is decent animation like the Richard breakdown scene is beautiful (IMO) and they could have done a better job

The "animation" in this anime is reminding me of how JC Staff did the "animation" for Food Wars. Powerpoint slideshows with barely any actual movement. Idk why but it felt way more noticeable to me in this episode.
People on MAL refuse to actually enjoy watching anime.

Your taste in anime isn't a personality trait.

MAL is literally just anime Twitter as its own website lol.

Anyone getting Revolutionary Girl Utena vibes or is it just me lmaooooo?

Anyway, I had this issue with the manga. It's kinda incomprehensible and difficult to follow. But I think that the feelings get across with the music and animation that the plot is kinda irrelevant you know? I've watch avant garde stuff with worse plots, and I've enjoyed those.

Oh, and if you have also seen this 1973 anime movie Kanashimi no Belladonna (aka Belladonna of Sadness), then I think this also has similar vibes.

Anyway, let me know if you agree with those "recommendations".

JC Staff can try sometimes with the animation and production efforts, like in Children of the Whales or even the latest Railgun season as well as the Konosuba movie, but their overall track record over the past few years have been absolutely shocking to say the least and screams soulless. The PowerPoint-level animation in this series 2 episodes in, like with Food Wars with so many stills, and poor drawings from a studio with experience like them in 2022's just so lazy and doesn't look great from an effort perspective. The pacing was better in this episode compared to the premiere but doesn't mean that it's good either even here. Rough start to say the least.

Man, that was one haunting and heartbreaking end to an episode. I'm loving this dark story, the color scheme, and use of silhouettes in the art style, but the lack of animation is really disappointing - wonder if the studio had a low budget or if the mangaka specifically requested this style (similarly to how the Househusband mangaka wanted a PowerPoint style for their anime adaptation).

I also am lost. I feel like I'm watching a recap episode. It just sort of jumps around, without properly introducing characters. I haven't read or even heard of this manga so coming in blind, it's hard to follow. Like why are all these guys in love with Richard? (IE the king and his son?) This character development needs more attention... I'm sure it better in the manga but I am anime only

The still frame animation was definitely noticeable this episode. The story is still quite intriguing so I’m tempted to just pick up the manga instead but I’ll give it a few more episodes to see how the anime fares.

OP is mediocre at best - I hoped for something more dramatic considering the theme and dark atmosphere of the show. Many still frames and lazy animation. Messy pacing and rushed action with many little scenes avoided (that made the events more impactful for the reader) will probably confuse anime-only viewers - so far episode 1 covered almost entirety of Volume 1 (3 chapters) and this one covered chapters 4-6 (so around a half of Volume 2). I'm afraid the anime will want to somehow squeeze the whole 17 volumes in one season.

That's too bad because it was one of my most anticipated shows of this season - and now this being probably the worst out of those I'm watching feels really disappointing. So glad I've decided to start reading the manga just before the release - the show fails completely in keeping me interested to what's going on on the screen, I don't know if I would check the original source if this was my first impression.

Yeah, I'm done with this. Even as an anime-only, it's abundantly clear how poor the pacing is, and on top of that the animation is just outright non-existent and that stands out so much when this should be so action-heavy (that scene where Richard was taking the sword from the soldier was disgustingly poor). All in all, I feel absolutely nothing for anything that's happening except from respect for Sayaka Ohara's great voice acting.

I'll be honest, as a manga reader from the start before this show even aired I think I'll just stick with the manga. The pacing is way too fast and I'm just...really not liking this adaptation, it doesn't have the same feel as the manga, which is such a shame because I really love Requiem of the Rose King, but at this point I think I'll just keep my experience manga-only.

I am enjoying the show for what it is, but there is much to be desired. The animation is pretty lack luster especially during emotional/action segments. Everything just feels censored and washed down compare to the manga. Its a shame because I appreciated how the manga is not afraid to show you uncomfortable things (like Richard kissing his father's head). I still plan to watch it though because I am total sucker for this story.

If you like the story, but not the show as a whole: Just read the manga. Trust me it is a great ride with better pacing and art. Ironically the manga feels more animated than the show lol.

I am confused. It was very hard to follow what was going on. I can't tell what happened between this and the previous episode. I also can't tell what happened in this episode itself.

There is something I have always wondered about archery in fiction: does a projectile shower of arrows actually work? I feel like arrows should be the most powerful when shot directly at the opponent. If you shoot it up, it will only fall down after losing its energy, and only be as strong as the gravity, which should not be strong enough to kill people in armour.

Wasn't the tradition of kissing under the mistletoe fairly recent? Did it even exist back in the medieval times?

I was right about the dad. He dies. Good parents always die! I am sad. I liked how it was shown. Like: even when dead, the dad is a powerful and strong presence in Richard's life.

Did the episode count change? I feel like, last episode, I had said 12 episodes can't be enough to tell a satisfying story of war. Now, MAL is showing 24 episodes.

Honestly, I know this is ridiculous, but I kind of liked the pacing and storytelling at times. It did feel like I might be missing some things, but at the same time, it felt sort of ethereal: it feels like we're seeing things through Richard's point of view, rife with vengeful and confusing hallucinations. That bombshell at the end... Jesus Christ. I simply cannot wait.

The story is not bad but it's kinda fast pacing and why they skip some of the event? I guess they animated it like that because of an art... I don't really mind that.

Aaa, yes... The son and the father taking an interest toward Richard... how will they handle that when the son found out that his dad like Richard too?
Wait... Richard has a female chest... By the guy that almost rape Richard reaction.... Richard has a penis??

Poor Richard... His father's dead...and that last scene ... Kissing your own dad... And a dead one too...

Okay true - the TV channel and production committee are probably the ones to blame for censorship and horrible pacing, but I was mostly referring to the almost non-existent animation on J.C. Staff's part. Incredibly disappointing when the studio has produced some shows with superb animation quality such as Toaru Kagaku no Railgun.

it's the food wars/one punch man s2's staff who is doing it not railgiun /danmachi but i think they're putting priorities on the next episodes rather than the first ones since the second and third episode had it's animation direction outsourced to korean studios probably because of the pandemic.
