I'm not sure how the rest of the English dub was, but I rewatched the ending confession with dub because I was curious how they would pull it off (given the nature of it being all Haiku + play on Japanese words (ha = tooth as well as leaf)). But man.

I'd like to say I have high tolerance for sappy, but that was the cheesiest thing I have ever seen, beyond the point of simple tensing up and cringing, but to a point of laughter (whilst still cringing). Given this was my first exposure to a dub, I hope it's not representative of the average dub out there lmao (to be fair, translating that kind of thing without it being sappy is next to impossible). Learn Japanese folks, otherwise many moments like those are prone to sounding forced and unnatural (even through subs), instead of rather sweet and minimal-cringe

I thought the ending was pretty fine in the dub, plus for me the only thing I could watch was the dub. There wasn't anything that was "bad" with the dub in my duration of the film. But yeah dubs can be cringy to people who only watch sub.

Has a 8.60 mean score

Guess there’s not much you can do in this case… except given it’s Netflix global don’t they have subtitles in your native language? Their list of subtitles available is huge

Since it's based on Japanese language haiku, are you saying that the English translations in the dub are weird?? I wouldn't mind checking this anime out especially since it's easily accessible on Netflix. But do we know if the Netflix subtitles are translated from the original Japanese language script, or the English dub script?? I think that matters if we're talking about a cringey dub lmao is a dub of this show even worth watching??

To be honest, subs ending was pretty cringe, i dont want to imagine it in english lmao. But I mean then again, dubs tend to be pretty cringe in general for whatever reason.

The translations are fine, albeit rather unnatural to use that kind of language in English. The dub is a bit different than the English subs used (the subs are more directly translated to the Japanese script). But in any case it's not so much about how well things got translated over, it's just the dub English voice-over and natural language differences make the dub ending particularly cringe (translating the feeling of the historic, poetic Japanese used in the Haikus is practically impossible - much of the art is within the language itself. Going in English, it just feels off base)

I watched the dub with the original subtitles and I thought it actually fit the film pretty well. Cringy, yes - reminded me a bit of the "Jesus died for our CYN-thias" poetry slam in 22 Jump Street. But it's a cringy moment in a pretty gentle movie about teenagers who are insecure about giving their full selves to the world - so sure, be a little cringy.

I can appreciate that this movie was very hard to dub in general, and thought the dub was fine overall. They could have spent more time working on the script to try and make the movie more localized, but eh, it's Netflix. They dont do more than the bare minimum on anything (including the subtitles)

Great movie though tbh. I watched it and a Whisker Away back to back and this movie blows it out of the water.

Why would you even bother with the dub? I don't think I've ever enjoyed anything dub, maybe The Simpsons cause it's funnier in spanish but that's pretty much it

I actually watched half this movie dubbed (I usually watch dubs when available because I have trouble focusing on reading subtitles) but it actually was such a below-average dub I switched to sub a quarter way through. The way you describe the ending in the dub makes me very glad I made this choice haha

It pretty much translated the Japanese, but to express such in English is very unnatural, maybe the voice acting added to the effect idk, but overall it was uber cringe lmao. Give it a watch(:

The English language is cringe. The only English dub anime that is passable is Code Geass.
I watched the movie dubbed in Spanish and the confession felt very romantic and cute.

its as bad as sub, just because its a japanese confession doesn't make it any less cringy. It was more cringy in dub yes, but that was beacuse it was fukin cringy straight out

Maybe if you were watching the sub with english subtitles, in which case the English is still part of it. It's not that it isn't cringe in Japanese, but if you know Japanese it's not too bad. The problem is fitting English into Haikus doesn't work as nice as Japanese to Haikus - the style of the confession was far more natural under the Japanese language than when put into English. The dub only heightens this effect because it's no longer just reading English words on subtitles, but using voice actors behind it to create extra cringey emphasis

I watched the sub as I never watch dubs. But, I didn't find the ending good. It was weird even in Japanese.

I thought the dub was fine. It followed the rules of haiku in English form,it pretty much translate what was in the sub too (maybe a little add on cause there was not enough syllables for English). But in all honesty I don't see the problem here, it felt pretty much the same as other anime dubs.

I think dubs are good (If an anime has a dub, I watch it in dub). They have definitely improved since the late 90s. They aren't perfect but I think they are improving every year. Some shows will always be hard to translate like the monogatari series and other language heavy anime. Sometimes it is difficult to get the subtle nuances of the language across. I'm sure the dub directors do their best to make it sound more natural to english viewers.
