Anime as a side-effect of learning Japanese. Anime no longer mere "side-effect". Pog
My rating system goes mostly based off enjoyment for high scores, but molds it's way into "'objective' critique outside enjoyment" for lower scores. This is because if there is something that is clearly a strong production (directed well/great art/etcetc), I feel it's unfair to rate it a 3 just because it's not my cup of tea and I found it boring. You can hate a Mozart symphony because it doesn't interest you, but you can't deny the art behind it, so I try to be conscious of the impact and effort that went behind a work. If I don't enjoy something and there's no "intellectually redeeming qualities", then I'll drop the mercy hat and rate 1-4. On the other hand, if my enjoyment of an anime is ridiculously high, I have no problem giving it an 8 or 9, even in spite of clear flaws and/or mediocre production. I probably won't enjoy an anime enough to give it a 10/10 if such is the case though, because 10/10 level enjoyment basically requires something that isn't hindered by noticeable flaws.
