THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE. ---------------------------------------- First episode premiered today from Crunchyroll's virutal expoo. Memenpu seems like the type of character who have sight on a goal, they don't give up. Plus, she seems to have a temper problem, especially with Gaganba. She seems to really want to prove herself to others. I think Gaganba is a good person at heart and he seems to geninuely care about Memenpu's well-being as as father. It's a fun lighthearted sci-fi anime imo with decent amount of personality and humor. Might have to get used to the CGI a little though. The Father-Daughter adventure begins! |

I might've already had contact with this kind of plot and ambience in many other irl/animations works, but the family vibes of it and the way it's been built so far- with a light comedy to sugarcoat it a bit- seems promising enough to keep me entertained. |

I like the concept of a father and daughter as the protagonist duo, but all they did was fight and scream at each other for most of the episode, It just got annoying after a while. Also the kid's age is messed up, she should've been 14 maybe 12. |

eibonslam said: Damn you're right. The sinopsis reads like the plot to Deca-Dence lol But in hindsight, I was looking a lot forward to this because of the Deca-Dence vibes, and I already love Memenpu and Gaganba's relationship, like an actual father-daughter duo. Pornstar-turned-VA Kanon Amane's debut as Memenpu brought me a more perky version of Deca-Dence's Natsume. Father Gaganba knows how to work his way around Memenpu and also like Kaburagi, is a loving father figure. Also, Satelight's visuals which hearken those of 2018's Juushinki Pandora with the Chinese themed setting is a plus. Nevertheless, if this is the 2nd coming of Deca-Dence, then I'll all ready for it! |

Even tho I haven't watched Deca-dance past episode 1 for some reason. I can tell how similar this all looks like Deca-dance. But, hey your boy is a sucker for Mecha shit... so, I'm looking forward to it. I'm enjoying the characters so far. A father-daughter story is always great to see. I don't mind CGI if it's done well or if it's not unbearable. Btw, I need to complete Deca-Dance ASAP. LOL |

Oh he did the thing, jumping off the building casually. I guess this is one of those "humanity is living under/above/somewhere because of aliens/monsters/something while they also dig/search stuff". I mean it in a positive way tho. And the father - daughter dynamics are really on full speed in this one aren't they lol. Tho its all adventures and games until shit hits the fan and you realize, that you're just a kid unable to help. So you team up with your dad who owns a personal Gundam, and go kick some real ass. |

A Father-Daughter duo, we don't get to see something like this pretty often. Daughter wants to explore the world but father doesn't want her to do so, she's being a kid been the prime reason obviously but nevertheless I liked the chemistry between these two. Start's been good so looking forward for what they have in for us. |

Rewatching this a 2nd time, and I can say that now I'm definitely more hyped for this show. The names of the "Markers" father-daughter duo that is Memempu and Gagumber, I pretty much preferred the Japanese translated names. But the core basis of an Underground city where people called Workers divulge the Kaiju-ridden Labyrinth with "Mark Bot" mechs in Pinyin Colony (which the Chinese setting is similar to Juushinki Pandora a.k.a Last Hope, another Satelight show), this is a pretty fun start. Memempu is a more ridiculous but adventurous person that's just like Natsume, and Gagumber is a more loose and carefree, father figure version of Kaburagi. The first hints of this Urorop place, and the dynamics of Memempu and Lynda is a relationship like no other. With Junichi Wada directing and composing this with a few scriptwriters, I'm looking forward to the potential of Sacks & Guns a.k.a Sakugan. This is as heart-warming as Deca-Dence and as heart-breaking as Made In Abyss, that's for sure. |

God damn, that was great. The world building in episode 1 is well done. It's no surprise, since it's done by the director who did SukaSuka and it really reminded me of episode 1 of SukaSuka. The attention to details in the background just sets the atmosphere of the world that this story takes place in. The story was nice too, with a focus on daughter/father relationship. The shocking development at the end and then the dialogue between Memenpuu and Gagumber was beautiful. The episode really flew by so fast. Really looking forward to this. Definitely a candidate to be anime of the season. |

This was amazing, I've been waiting for this show to air all year ever since the PVs dropped and was constantly concerned that it wouldn't fulfilled my expectations and this episode alleviated those thoughts. This has that feeling you get when you watch a show that's considered a classic, except it's happening in real time. If this show doesn't become a cult classic I'll be really surprised. |

That was great! It was like Made in Abyss but with responsible parents. Love the daddy daughter duo, and so many genuine feels just in the first episode, I will be bawling by the end of this if that was any indication of what's to come. |

The setting of the show is quite intriguing and I liked the character interactions. Specially Memempu and Lynda's, they are both quite amusing. Also Lynda sure was wearing an interesting dress. I liked how things were progressing and was getting hopeful but alas the end of this episode was meh. Both Lynda and her dad were killed to show the reality of things and Memempu's resolve but it failed to achieve either of that as things were rushed and their deaths weren't impactful at all. Allright premise, thou still looking forward to seeing how things will go. |

This was a great first episode. Seriously love the father-daughter relationship and their names are funny as hell. Seems like it's a mix of Deca-Dense and Made in Abyss. You can become a ''marker'' and explore the hidden labryinth. That is what she wants to become and what she strives for. But that second half of the episode. A Kaiju appeared and killed Lynda and her father. That was just out of nowhere. A wholesome moment dropped instantly to an emotional and shocking one. But they made up their mind and it's time to explore. The OST was just epic, great personalities, characters and the animation is fairly good. Same goes for the CGI. |

First episode for this series had its issues (particularly in the second half where events felt a tad too rushed and sudden) but at least it didn't leave me bored which I'll take for a first impressions. It's the kind of series though that makes me wish that a better studio like Trigger would have handled it instead for the animation to spice up the series. Hopefully the story kicks in and maintains a fun feel, and the father-daughter dynamic remains fresh too, there is a fine line between charming and annoying between the two of them and their 'conflicts' despite caring for each other as family. I've seen a lot of bad premieres this season so far, this one's not quite one of them. |

The animation is great but the story... up until the monsters attack is shit. I mean it promotes the worst feminist propaganda ever, From the child abusing the father just because she wants to go somewhere to everyone supporting a 9 years child in attemoting a life threatening journing, to everyone telling Gagaumber he lost when his daughter tells him that because he is the sole money winner he isn't allow to keep most of the money he earns for himself. The ungratitude is huge. If she were my kid I would have made her arse red. Also her dream is dumb... there was a reason humans left the surface, going back without first establishing a safe route from kaijuu is suicide. And how about the idea of a genius child at 9... really now? That is total bs. |

Deca-dance but they're in underground like Gurren Lagann. I'm wondering if there'll be an equal big twist, like when they emerge to the surface and it's actually real world in present day. But yes, this anime could be a DILF heaven, even if one was already killed in this episode, too bad. |

Such a great start. Reminds me a lot of Gurren Lagann. Quirky charas, mecha, working underground and the whole style of the rustic futuristic setting. Like the City has also something of Kamina City One of the highly anticipated title this Fall and this episode definitely left a strong impression. I might have to get used with the CGI, but so far soo good Im loving this show. Gagamuba and his daughter are really likable characters. I dont have a problem with the CGI but I dont know about the pacing I think it's going a little bit too fast? I want to feel more of what they felt during the deaths of their closed ones, It did give me shock seeing it but they recovered out of it like its nothing. Hope this anime get better overtime I really have high expectations for this |

This is more close to Gurren Lagann with Made in Abyss. Various ecosystems underground, dangerous creatures, exploration. And I wouldn't be surprise if Uroroq is Memenpu's mother, i mean a parent pointing a place of extreme danger to the child go, is Anime Parenting 101. |

Well, I've been looking forward to this one since the first PV dropped a while ago, and I'm glad to say that at least this first episode has lived up to the imaginary hype I had for it in my mind. The CGI was the only thing that was a bit disappointing so far, but it wasn't so bad to ruin it for me. There's definitely some parallels between episode 1 of this and episode 1 of Gurren Lagann, but I can't imagine those similarities will continue beyond the basic "young person and their familial mentor traveling in a mech together" theme in future episodes. |

Nice father/daughter relationship. Heh... when that other girl told Memenpu not to go with her, I sensed this would end badly (death flag) lol, and it did. Probably the best, most promising show this season for me. Can't wait to see what's the deal with the tower in the picture/her dream. |

1st episode: 8/10 So, the anime seems pretty good. This anime can get really good with good world building. The 2D animation looks really good, and the choreography looks really nice in the beginning scene. I love the art style as well. The backgrounds look well drawn and you can tell a lot about the colony they’re in by looking at the backgrounds. Everything is mostly metal, cramped and uses ideas from the surface (relating to actual structures), telling us about the lifestyle of the residents there. There is also a short shot of Memenpu’s computer showing the map of a certain area of the labyrinth. It’s looks very nice and once again, tells a lot about the environment. My main problem is the CGI: there is little contrast. You can easily tell that it is 3D animation and not 2D. I understand that there are A LOT, and I mean A LOT of scenes where it is hard to animate, but I wish they could work on the contrast more. I personally do not REALLY mind, but it can ruin the sort of “life” in the scene. There was also something I noticed with the “mech looking upon the city after they evacuated from it” shot: it has great backgrounds, but the mech is a bit blurry/badly contrasted. The dust effects when the big boi fell were also didn’t really exist. It didn’t look like something BIG just fell (and in comparison to people, them big bois are massive!) Story wise: it’s action packed, the way it’s heading is interesting and the father-daughter relationship will fit well. So far as I know, they will be journeying out into the rest of the Labyrinth and the environment reminds me a lot of Made in Abyss: “this place has this, while this place has that.” Character design: the characters look really cool, and GAGAMBER(ER not A), seriously looks like a dad. He has the form of that type of person and a sort of BEARD. A BEARD! I’ve never properly seen beards before in anime and it fits him well. He also wears stuff that would fit his character and has the thoughts of a father: he does not want his daughter in danger. Memenpu, on the other hand, has a cool “costume” and has the emotions and thoughts a girl her age would have. She’s a bit naive and adventurous. I’d like to see her character develop a lot including GAGAMBER’s and if done well, this anime will be very good! |

Satelight having it good this month. Could Urorop be the mom that left? (this gave me Made in Abyss vibes even before the wham moment). Having a picture of the place she has to find also reminds me of Patema Inverted. RIP Walsh and Lynda Big Tony looks rather unique, let's see how this father-daughter pair works it. I haven't seen much Brunet Stanislas's mechanical designs outside of Macross and M3. |

Well, it looks great, and it built a good foundation for the plot. Let's see where it goes from here. I wonder if this'll be the type of show that would go full circle. Like in the last episode, Memenpu and Gaganba will be the father and daughter in the robot, and he would finally tell her she's grown up before they die or something. Maybe I'm grasping at straws, but the similar dynamics between the two families are very sus. |

other than the meh CGI this episode was actually pretty good. the show has a good premise and overall seems really interesting. I like the idea of the farther daughter duo and they both seem like interesting characters. I just hope their relationship progresses past them just yelling at each other, although it almost certainly will judging by the end of this episode looking forward to see where this show goes as I tend to really like shows based around exploring cool and unknown worlds. Overall looking forward to next episode. |

Iwahara Yuji's original character designs are good, especially Memenpu that has a nice and big forehead. The town also looked colorful and alive but I assume from the next episode the setting will change to the wild Labyrinth. |

Damn that was a good first episode. The setting felt like a bit of mix between Made in Abyss and Gurren Lagann. The father/daughter pair were instantly likeable. The ending especially was great. Everything from the mech getting shot down onward was pure kino. I love the premise too. There are tons of anime kids who want to go on dangerous life threatening adventures, but there are very few anime dads who want to follow along to keep them safe. |

Yeah, now this is how you start off a promising anime, right off the bat you have the basic elements of the story, personal motives of the characters, the world they live in and add a good animation, and you got this hell of a good show. Some already said it, this looks like the mix of Gurren Lagann and Made in Abyss, but here the protagonists are no other than a little girl and his father, that's not something you see this days. Like almost every anime, I didn't know anything about this but now I'm fking hyped for Sakugan. |

Pretty good epsode overall. To me it looks like Gurren Lagan and Decadence child, thet was raised by made in abyss, 3 great animes! The only thing I'm worried about (besides the cgi) is the tone, it is kinda of over the place. That death scene... was it really necessary? If death doesn't become a regular occurrence they better have some flash backs or something so those don't feel like wasted characters, and if it is how will they make sure it won't clash with the goofy daughter and father dynamic they already have going on? |

this irritates me in so many ways first of all why have her be 9 years old? not only does it stretch believability that a 9 year old graduated college, invents things, and behaves like a grown adult, but there would be absolutely no loss to her character if she was 12 or 13. I don't think you'd have to change the character design whatsoever. But as it stands, no 9 year old would ever act like this. Do the writers just have no experience writing children whatsoever? that aside the world building here feels rushed and uninteresting. What helped Made in Abyss' world building was how the characters treated the abyss with such awe and reverence, and them talking about it and finding out new information was always delivered at an appropriate time in the story. The pacing here was frenetic and wild. And the dad's character seems a little messy atm. So he's incompetent and unambitious, but his friend said in a passing line that he had this big reputation and that he gave it all up for his daughter. However his character is delivered in such a way that I can't see him ever having been some big deal hot shot. It seems more like he's set up for a "rags to riches" type story where he grows as a person through this trip with his daughter Also the death of both the dad and daughter's friends at the end felt like a very generic and stupid decision. Not only do we lose two important characters that took half the screentime of this first episode, but the result of their deaths could have been accomplished easily without any of this. The traumatised reaction of the daughter would be perfectly realistic if she witnessed anyone dying, or literally just from being confronted by the big monster. In fact if that was the case, it would have worked better since it's a character flaw to overcome (being afraid of monsters). My reaction was frustration. We've only been introduced to 4 characters, and now 2 are dead right off the bat. Which means next episode we'll need to be introduced to even more characters. It's just uneconomical writing for no good reason. this is not good storytelling folks. This is rushed, tonally inconsistent, and incredibly messy. If you wanna see good storytelling from this season, check out Heike Monogatari or Takt Op. Destiny. Both have far better written introductions. DoubleBox said: It was very good first episode, we were introduced the main goal, characters, story, and sudden twists. The only real similarities between Made in Abyss/Gurren Lagaan to this show are the premise, and particularly the sory of fast pace and high energy (I'm thinking more TTGL for that of course.) The visual flair, color pallete, and art style also feels like something Studio Trigger would make. Other than that, this feels comfortably like it's own thing, and THAT is why I'm so excited about it. It has lots of panache and detail. I loved the emotional little violin song at the end of the episode, because so many other anime would stick with the violin and keyboard. But the track felt so layered and full, with the addition of the saxophone to kind of carry emotion in a way that made that track feel soooo unique. That little attention to detail is in everything from the background art (you can learn so much about our characters dynamic just by pausing at the beginning while our characters eat, and looking at their house) to the music. Sakugan really looks like it will be the highlight of the season. (FUCK 86. And even FUCK Platinum End). |
